cinema technology
James Cameron chose Christie projectors to demonstrate
the next generation cinema experience
At CinemaCon 2011 — the cinema industry’s largest trade show — Hollywood film makers along
with movie industry giants James Cameron, George Lucas and Jeffrey Katzenberg, got together
to discuss the evolution of cinema, going forward. Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron
demonstrated ground-breaking ideas using Christie digital projectors, to visually explain
concepts to tradeshow attendees. Cameron believes that this change will revolutionize the way
movies are normally shot. Story continues on page 8

“As exhibitors across Europe enthusiastically
embraced D-Cinema over the past year at an
accelerated pace, demand outstripped supply
towards the latter part of 2010, creating
a temporary shortage. However, Christie's
China last summer has helped Christie EMEA
meet the overwhelming demand for our digital
Vice President, Dale Miller.
Success on this scale has not come easily
or without the support of the larger cinema
community. “Our integration partners, resellers
and most importantly the exhibition community
have been both patient and supportive as we
have looked to maintain our product leadership
Record 3D growth in France
Christie Solaria Series has been central to the
massive growth of digital cinema around the world
and especially in France, where the projectors
have garnered wide acclaim, specifically from
independent operators.
Christie has played a major role in the
inevitable move to digital cinema. The installed
base of digital equipment more than doubled
in one year. With over 2,350 digital screens
in France today — an increase of 135% over
the previous year — the majority are Christie
digital projectors.
Squarely in the center of 3D technology,
Christie continues to lead the great success
of 3D digital cinema, which has spread across
France. Today, there are over 1,700 active 3D
screens in French cinemas, versus just 750 at
Christie projectors deliver vivid images
on the largest of screens.
NOE Cinémas says ‘yes’
to Christie Solaria Series
projectors
Nord Ouest Exploitation Cinémas’ (NOE
Cinémas), headquartered in Elbeuf, France,
was founded in 1987. Their recent decision to
go digital has been both a model and a strong
signal about the direction of exhibition to the
entire community of movie theater operators.
The plan for going digital was developed
by Richard Patry, CEO and founder of NOE
Cinémas, and Alain Surmulet, the company’s
technical director, who drafted the technical
specifications for the digital conversion.
Patry’s technical expertise was honed in his
earlier role as technical director for the National
Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF), and he
notes that fully digital cinema had become
a technological and economic reality for the
5,470 active screens in France.
After an extensive selection process,
Richard Patry and Alain Surmulet decided
on Christie Solaria Series projectors for 17
movie theaters, located in western France.
The conversion process was made possible
by investor Ymagis, a European digital
cinema integrator and deployment entity.
The projectors and Doremi servers were
supplied and installed by Ciné Digital Services,
who provides NOE Cinémas with technical
assistance that allows the company to operate
its new projection equipment under ideal
conditions, flexibly and efficiently.
NOE specifications were
rigorous and demanding
“Alain Surmulet and I wanted complete consistency
across our range of projectors, throughout our
entire chain of theater operations, and that’s what
Christie offered us. So we chose the new DLP
Cinema Christie Solaria Series 4K-ready projectors.
For quality and uniformity, the Christie CP2220s
and CP2230s were installed in each of our theaters.
These units meet all of our expectations in terms
of reliability and brightness for 3D projection, and
are equipped with the 1.2" DLP Cinema chips
from Texas Instruments — the only chip that can
be easily upgraded to 4K technology in just 15
minutes,” stated Patry.
The projectors also had to meet requirements for
easy maintenance, handover and everyday use with
an easy-to-use interface suitable for NOE Cinémas
staff whose roles are not limited to projectionist.
Since all NOE Cinémas are now equipped for 3D
projection, the nod went to the Xpand active
glasses system leased from the 3Delux company.
“With more light output than any mid power
projectors on the market, Christie also offers
the lowest cost of operation. The fact that they
chose Christie confirms our belief that our Solaria
Series projectors meet the needs of the digital
cinema market better than any other product out
there,” stressed Pascal Gervais, regional director,
Christie France. “NOE Cinémas’ choice confirms
Christie’s leadership in the digital cinema market,
as well as a firm 100% DCI-quality commitment
to both the creativity of the movie industry and
the theater operators who deliver dreams and
emotion to the public.”
Europe's demand for digital cinema
Capturing attention before
and during premiere of 3D
Disney TRON:LEGACY in
Moscow
The premiere showing of Tron:Legacy — the
continuation of the original sci-fi film of the 80’s
about cyberspace — was held in one of the most
successful Russian multiplex cinema theaters,
utilizing two Christie CP2230 Solaria Series
projectors. The projectors, known for their vivid
3D presentations, in-theater reliability and lowest
cost of ownership, made them the ideal choice
to project the eagerly awaited film.
To create the appropriate atmosphere at the
premiere of one of the most awaited and spectacular
films of the year, the new 3D Disney blockbuster
TRON:Legacy, Christie ® MicroTiles displays were
installed in the lobby of the KARO FILM Oktyabr
theater. It was the first time Christie MicroTiles had
been used for the promotion of a film in Russia.
High tech and futuristic design
“The central MicroTiles display with its exclusive
shape was appealing to many film stars that were
photographed and interviewed in front of it. This
‘digital canvas’ substituted as a traditional ‘guest
walk’ background,” said Natalia Valieva, general
director of Smart Look. Specializing in new media
and, in particular, digital technology and digital
out-of-home (DOOH), the advertising agency,
Smart Look, was the project manager for the
premiere. “The audience clearly appreciated the
high technology and futuristic design that is part
and parcel of the film, and Christie MicroTiles
successfully matched the atmosphere.”
Smart Look was responsible for the Oktyabr
lobby design that employed digital media.
Big Screen Service supplied the MicroTiles
and ETC Russia created the content. Valieva
added, “For this film premiere, The Walt Disney
Company wanted to use the most advanced
and technological features to create the feeling
of immersion into the virtual world. Christie
MicroTiles were the right tool for the solution —
fantastically bright and next to “live” images,
made the viewers notice them. The ability to
configure the screen into any shape allowed the
implementation of many creative ideas.”
Technical Director Andrey Efarov of ETC Russia
noted: “The obvious advantage of the new
display technology is its outstanding features
both in color rendition and resolution, and the
structure appears to be practically seamless. One
more factor of high importance is a wide viewing
angle which is a very valuable feature in places
where many people get together.” ETC Russia
specialists prepared special structures to install
the Christie MicroTiles. Efarov added that the
weight of the module displays made it possible
to make the structures fairly light and the
delivery and installation was easier for them.
Anastasia Kuznetsova, art director of KARO
FILM, said: “Relying on our experience with
the TRON:Legacy premiere, we can affirm
that the video walls made up of Christie
MicroTiles display modules open up new
marketing opportunities for cinema theaters.
This technology is extraordinarily flexible in
terms of choosing the shape of display which
can be customized for each particular premiere,
each time offering new surprises to regular
guests and new visitors.”
Christie Regional Director in Eastern Europe and
Russia, Adil Zerouali, pointed out that “MicroTiles
today are the most advanced solution for tasks
of this kind — they enable creative staff to avoid
standard solutions of rectangular screens, making
unique frameworks for each new project.”
Christie MicroTiles modular displays
attracted guests who arrived for the
3D premiere of TRON:LEGACY.
Fine tuning in post
production at NHB Studios
in Germany
Hamburg-based NHB Studios has been working
in post production for 23 years and has been
located in Berlin for the past nine years. With
65 specialists, they primarily work on getting
both TV spots and cinema commercials ready
for screening.
NHB head Michael Vitzthum and his technical
teams have the most demanding clientele. They
are creative heads from the advertising industry;
their clients are marketing and product specialists,
to whom it is key that every product is promoted
with absolute perfection.
The studio is often provided with two and a
half hours of film for an average spot of just 20
seconds. If the material is not already available in
digital form, it is scanned and colors are matched
to the video color space. Subsequently, ‘offline
editing’ takes place where it is processed with
the appropriate sound that is not yet ready for
transmission. NHB handles the recording and
can also compose suitable music or background
sound. The edited data — known as finishing or
online — is then assembled, and the visual effects
and titles are also added.
Ensuring products look really
good in TV spots
One of the most important steps in production
is color correction, which defines the final look
of the film, and that takes place in NHB’s own
small cinema, known as the ‘GradingSuite.’
NHB’s Chief Technical Officer Philipp Grossmann
recently purchased the Christie CP2000-ZX
digital projector for the GradingSuite.
Grossmann explains, “In this room, every TV
spot and every film that we produce is given its
finishing touch and this can only be performed
with display equipment that provides 100%
faithful reproduction.”
According to Grossmann, there was only one
projector that filled the bill: one that works with
a DCI-compatible chipset and is effectively a
digital cinema projector, because the spots are
also screened in cinemas. There was also a range
of features that played a role in Grossmann’s final
decision in selecting the CP2000-ZX, Christie's 2K
DLP Cinema ® projector.
“I was most impressed by the way in which
the projector could be calibrated. It does it
largely independently and with magnificent
results. What was also very important to us
was the facility of arranging different settings
for each channel, from input through color
room to brightness.” Grossmann explained.
The latter is of particular importance for NHB
because a different light density is required for
HD video than for digital cinema or the current
3D cinema.
Vitzthum added, “Now and again, we also
produce complete cinema films and then
nothing could be done without the Christie
digital projector.”
When the question arose as to whether 3D
projectors would be required in the foreseeable
future, Grossmann admitted, “we really weren’t
sure at the time. But the fact that an upgrade
would be so simple was a great plus point. More
recently, when our Xpand system was delivered, it
took less than two hours before we could see the
first three-dimensional images with our Christie
projector. And, what was also critical, was the
magnificent support provided by Christie, that we
still appreciate today.”
Europe's demand for digital cinema
The Kremlin’s first digital
cinema screening experience
The Grand Hall of the State Kremlin Palace
(GKD), Russia’s major auditorium, was built in
1961 mainly for large-scale political events.
It hosted congresses and assemblies of great
historical importance
for the whole country.
The Kremlin Palace
also serves as a key
venue for concerts
and theater performances.
Since its first
days of operation, the
GKD has been used as
the second stage of
the Bolshoi Theatre.
It is a venue for performances
by famous
artists as well as for
the Kremlin’s famous
New Year parties.
In 2007 it became
evident that the GKD
had become both
obsolete and outdated
from an engineering point of view. The
management of the Kremlin Palace wanted
to restore motion picture exhibition facilities, to
install state-of-the-art equipment, and to use
it extensively for special events.
Alexander Rubin, general director of Kinoproekt
Company, who had a long-standing relationship
with the GKD, was responsible for the major
installation. Rubin proudly noted, “The Grand Hall
of the State Kremlin Palace is surely the largest,
the most beautiful and the most prestigious
auditorium in Russia. Words cannot really describe
it: There are few halls like this in the world. We
are proud of being called to work here.”
Reliability was a key issue
One of Kinoproekt’s technical design assignments
was to combine the traditional film projection
equipment with digital equipment. Kinoproekt’s
engineers chose Christie digital projectors due
to their global record of success and reputation.
Based on the 6,200-seat auditorium with a
projection distance of over 70m (230ft), several
upper circle tiers, and a 30m (98ft)-wide screen,
the engineers made the required complicated
calculations for both the projectors and the
audio equipment.
Rubin explains the choice of the Christie
digital projectors saying that they have “chosen
themselves” due to their excellent features. “The
Kremlin can not afford either event cancellation
or any faults in the staged programs because of
equipment breakdown. Therefore, the highest
quality products as well as 100% system
backup and redundancy
was a must,” said Rubin.
“To provide maximum
brightness we stacked two
paired Christie CP2000-XB
projectors (now part of the
Christie Solaria Series)
to allow for simultaneous
projection on one screen.
The projectors provide
brightness of 60,000 ANSI
lumens — plenty for the
auditorium in complete
darkness.” However, for
system redundancy, four
projectors were installed.
Adil Zerouali, Christie’s regional director,
Eastern Europe, commented: “Dynamic
development of the digital movie industry is
characteristic of the Russian market. This is
why this region is one of the most promising
for Christie. The digital movie exhibition
system in the Kremlin is surely a landmark
project for our company.”
“Kinoproekt, together with its long-standing
partner Christie, have accumulated great
experience in cinema installations all over
Russia. This project is very special,” concluded
Rubin. “Looking forward I believe that one day
this enormous hall will be equipped with a 3D
system. Fortunately, the latest Christie CP2000
family of projectors are primed to implement
the idea.”
“The projectors
provide brightness
of 60,000 ANSI
lumens — plenty
for the auditorium
in complete
darkness.”
Story continues from front cover, page 1
“We know Christie
for its mission critical
reliability, brightness
capabilities, superior
performance and
support worldwide.”
James Cameron
Chairman and CEO
Lightstorm Entertainment Inc.
Kathryn Cress, George Scheckel and
Craig Sholder from Christie, with
James Cameron, at CinemaCon 2011.
Pushing the bounds of technology
Cameron showcased the first “mass audience”
demonstration of cinema projection that
illustrated the higher frame-rate delivery
necessary for the next phase of 3D films.
Cameron used Christie Solaria Series
projectors to project 3D content at up to
60 frames per second (FPS). According to
Cameron, “3D shows you a window into
reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass
out of the window. In fact, it is just reality.
It is really stunning.”
“Our collective vision at Lightstorm is to
continually push the bounds of technology to
deliver a movie environment that makes cinema
patrons feel that they are completely immersed
in the locales, sight, sounds and world that the
movie is conveying,” said Cameron. “We chose
the leader in digital cinema projection technology
to assist us in demonstrating our ground-breaking
vision. We know Christie for its mission critical
reliability, brightness capabilities, and superior
performance and support worldwide.”
Christie at innovation forefront
Unlike other solutions, the Christie Solaria
Series projectors are capable of delivering over
30,000 lumens on the largest screens, while
delivering breathtaking 3D images, which,
combined with higher frame rates, will speed
the evolution of the cinema experience.
Movies can currently be produced to
incorporate panoramic, fast-paced action
sequences but once the final digital content
reaches the editing room, and then the theaters,
the results hit a roadblock. “Our cameras can
capture scenes from 48 FPS to 60
FPS but end up being projected
at the industry-standard 24 FPS,
resulting in blurring — what
the industry refers to as ‘judder’
— which is disappointing,”
said Cameron. “Both the
post-production and projection/
display phases of the moviemaking
process need to advance
to accommodate higher frame
rates and deliver the thrills that
these rates can deliver.”
As the leader in digital cinema projection
technologies, Christie’s next generation of digital
cinema solutions are already here, and are capable
of projecting movies at the frame rates that
Cameron desires. The Christie Solaria Series of 4K
digital cinema projectors features Texas Instruments’
DLP Cinema ® technology and can display 4096
x 2160 pixels of resolution. Among the brightest
in the world, all next-generation Christie digital
cinema projectors utilize Christie Brilliant 3D
technology providing the ultimate 3D experience
with the lowest cost of operation.
Upgrade path to
higher frame rates
Christie will also be the first to offer firmware
upgrades in the near future to support the higher
frame rates demanded by Hollywood’s leading
film producers. “It’s a boon to the industry to
have advanced, upgradeable projector technology
from Christie to solve part of the frame-rate
puzzle,” said Cameron, “but the entire industry
needs to step up and realize the benefits.
“We understand how important it is for
exhibitors to safeguard their long-term technology
investment. With Christie, exhibitors are assured
they have a future-proof solution that can meet
their needs both today and tomorrow,“ remarked
Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment
Solutions at Christie. ”The Solaria Series projectors
are designed to meet Digital Cinema Initiatives
(DCI) specifications, and feature a new modular
architecture for improved serviceability and ease
of maintenance, delivering up to 25 percent lower
cost of operation than competing technologies,”
Sholder added.
Museum of the Moving Image
in NY selects Christie to create
a unique viewing experience
Originally part of a studio complex built by
Paramount Pictures in 1920 in Astoria, New York,
the Museum of the Moving Image opened in one
of the buildings in 1988. The recent three-year,
$67 million renovation and expansion — doubling
the size of the Museum — completed its
transformation in January of 2011.
According to The New York Times, the
architect Thomas Leeser “effectively blurs the
boundaries among architecture, film and viewer.”
Leeser invoked the unbounded possibilities of
screens and projectors, especially in the 267-seat
main theater, which presents newly restored
film classics to contemporary movies in formats
ranging from 16mm to 70mm film as well as
digital 2D and 3D.
Sweep and scope of
theater is spectacular
According to Leeser, “film going is an imaginary
voyage; entering the theater is not unlike
entering an alien’s spaceship.” Twin entry ramps
encased in blue felt and blue lights invite the
visitor into a space that feels like a suspended,
weightless pod. Upon entering, one encounters
an explosion of colors on the custom designed
stage curtain by textile designer Cindy Sirko, and
is surrounded by deep blue fabric triangles in a
pattern inspired by digital wireframe drawings.
“Our use of the Christie Digital Cinema projector
supports the core mission of the theater which
is the presentation of the highest quality cinema
Film and digital cinema installer for the
Museum, Gregg Paliotta, president and owner
of Digital Media Systems, selected the Christie
CP2230 DLP Cinema ® 4K-ready Solaria Series
digital projector for the main theater. “As the
company responsible for cinema installation, I
felt that ‘it had to be a Christie’ for the most
important theater in the Museum. The need for
the brightest image on the screen, day-in-andday-out
reliability, and full DCI compliance were
important factors in my choice,” said Paliotta.
“Plus, Christie Brilliant 3D technology and
the projector’s powerful output of 32,000 ANSI
lumens were critical for 3D presentations, which
require the brightest image possible.”
Chief projectionist Richard Aidala's response
to the installation of the Christie digital projector
was summed up in just two words, “Love it!” He
explained that it exceeded all of his expectations.
“The projector is exceptionally user-friendly —
the lens shift and zoom are right there. The
touch panel control is so easy to navigate. I am
amazed by how intuitive the projector is.”
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Christie projectors selected for
Disney’s first 3D outdoor world
premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean:
On Stranger Tides”
With permission from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
“The World Premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean:
On Stranger Tides” — the largest outdoor 3D
movie premiere ever — took place at Disneyland on
May 7th, and captured all of the fun, fantasy, and
adventure that the “Pirates” franchise represents.
The Walt Disney Studios selected Christie Solaria
Series projectors to show the film on a giant screen
built right on the Rivers of America, directly across
from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The
movie, directed by Rob Marshall and produced by
Jerry Bruckheimer, roared to the screen in brilliant
Disney Digital 3D to an exceptionally responsive
crowd which included the film’s stars and many
Hollywood celebrities.
“We worked with Christie
for Pirates 1,2 and 3, so when
it came time to do 'Pirates of
the Caribbean: On Stranger
Tides,' Christie was our first
call, because their systems
are dependable and reliable.
Christie is a forward thinking
and innovative company,
so it was natural for us to
work with them on such an
important and high profile
event,” said Michael J. Kern,
vice president, Special Events
Production and Technical
Services for Walt Disney
Studios Motion Pictures.
Christie lights up the show
"Christie has been involved in many of
our premiere events," said Lylle Breier, SVP
Worldwide Special Events, Walt Disney Studios
Motion Pictures. “When we want to wow our
World Premiere audiences with a blockbuster
feature presentation, we know we can count on
Christie to deliver the best and brightest digital
cinema viewing experience available today.”
Heralded by elite filmmakers and supported by
major Hollywood studios, Christie Solaria Series
projectors were selected for their treasure trove of
features such as Christie Brilliant 3D technology
and the highest brightness levels. Designed to
meet the demands of the largest screens, indoor
and out, six powerful Christie CP2230 projectors,
paired with Christie Xenolite ® lamps, illuminated
the 86.5 ft by 35 ft (26.4m x 10.7m) screen, from
a distance of approx. 190 ft (57.9 m). Unmatched
contrast and stunning colors delivered a
razor-sharp Disney Digital 3D viewing experience
for Disney’s first outdoor premiere and the first
Pirates movie in the franchise to be shot in 3D.
“We designed a custom projection booth out
of a 20ft (6.1m) sea container which was very
portable. Inside we had lighting, power, and air
conditioning, pretty much all of the amenities
With permission from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
you’d expect of
a booth. All six
Christie projectors
were mounted on
a framework so
that they’d be very stable and rigid,” explained
Kern. “By stacking three projectors per column,
Christie technicians were able to assure triple
redundancy, so that if any lamp burned out
during the presentation, any one of the projectors
would be able to pick up the slack without loss
of brightness in the 3D presentation.”
The projection system
consisted of three
major parts: Dolby
servers, XPAND 3D
Cinema System and
Christie digital projectors. Kern added, “They all
integrated wonderfully. We’re very fortunate to
have a system that we could count on for this
event. What most people don't realize is that
we're starting the movie right when the sun goes
down, so we're actually testing 48 hours before
the show. We are very pleased that the systems
have been so stable that we know, when we hit
the screen, we're going to be ready to go the first
time. The projectors have just been really a dream
to work with.”
“Christie is proud to play an integral role in
many exciting Disney premieres,” said Craig
Sholder, Vice President of Christie Entertainment
Solutions. “Just as the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
series has become the standard for action-packed
family entertainment, the Christie Solaria Series
projectors have raised the bar on image quality
and reliability, while delivering the lowest cost
of operation. Captain Jack Sparrow (played by
Johnny Depp) has never looked sharper and
more colorful than on a Christie digital cinema
