Cowboys calling...
The Information Commissioner has launched
an investigation after hundreds of residents in
Leicestershire were woken by illegal
automated cold calls in the dead of night,
warning them that their homes were
vulnerable to burglars
T
he
calls were understood to have been made by a marketing
firm on behalf of an, as yet, unnamed security company,
targeting homes in the Market Harborough area in the early
hours of the morning on Monday 24th August using illegal
automated calls which, according to reports, left some elderly
residents in a frightened state. It has been reported that residents
were told that they could no longer rely on the police for their
security. Callers were told to follow instructions and use an
automated service to arrange an appointment with the alarm
company, whose representatives were in the area.
Automated calls to households for direct marketing purposes are
illegal under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC
Directive) Regulations 2003 and face fines of up to £500,000.
This is not the first time that dodgy methods have been used to
sell alarms to the public as telephone scams in Herefordshire in
2013, Essex in 2012 and others have been reported over the years.
The use of automated calling is fairly new as previously this had
been done by salesmen using pressure techniques or scare tactics to
get the public to sign up. Often these calls involved the homeowners
agreeing to an overly expensive contract while being told they were
getting the equipment and installation for free. The BBC programme
Watchdog has also uncovered shady alarm selling techniques in the
past.
We reported in the July edition of PSI that the domestic alarm
market in the UK was a potential growth area for installers with only
28% of homes having an alarm fitted (according to data from
Vanderbilt’s Security Barometer 2015) and last month our Panel of
experts gave their tips on how to gain business in the market. Not
one of them suggested using pressure techniques or automated cold
calling.
If we are not careful such illegal tactics could seriously harm the
domestic market for those searching for new business. If the sale of
burglar alarms becomes linked with the “used car salesman”
syndrome or “dodgy geezer” tag it will be made very difficult for the
trade to gain the trust of new customers.
Many of you will be accredited in some way with the bodies that
exist in the UK to identify the best companies in the installation
sector, so this type of thing must annoy the hell out of you. Obviously
there will always be cowboys and there will always be businesses
looking at the quick-buck, but in the long term it is damaging the
market and tarnishing the work of those that seek to raise standards
– especially with the widespread media coverage such incidents
provoke.
We await the finding of the ICO in the Market Harborough case
with a keen hope of a serious fine.
Abel Alarm celebrates 50th
anniversary
Abel Alarm is celebrating its 50th anniversary in
2015. To mark the achievement the company
has held a number of events throughout the
year culminating with a recent party at Leicester
Rugby Club.
Since installing the first Abel alarm system in
1965, Abel has seen many changes and great
development in the business. From a small
office in Leicester, it has grown to become
reportedly the largest privately owned electronic
security company throughout the United
Kingdom from its branch network
“While enjoying this celebration the
management of Abel would like to thank all the
people that have made it possible,” says Pat
Allen, Director at Abel Alarm. “To the countless
customers, suppliers, employees and
communities that have helped, and supported
the company, over the years, we very much
appreciate your loyal support.”
Pointer presented with IIYP
employment award
Pointer has been recognised for its commitment
to employing young people with the
presentation of the Investors in Young People
(IIYP) Gold award by Minister for Youth and
Women's Employment, Annabelle Ewing MSP.
Speaking at the presentation, the Minister
said: “I am delighted that Pointer has been
recognised for its commitment to employing
and investing in young people. Over the last few
years Pointer has introduced a number of youth
employment programmes for staff who want to
pursue a career in the risk and security
management sector.
“This is the perfect example of what
companies in the risk sector can do. It offers
recruitment and training opportunities to
provide good development opportunities for
young people so they can plan ahead and
develop long term plans and ambitions. This
accreditation is a very significant achievement
and is indicative of the culture that they have
created that puts young people at the heart of
how they achieve their results."
INDUSTRY NEWS
Travel time ruling could hit security
installers and employers
The European Court of Justice has ruled that time spent
travelling to and from first and last appointments by workers
without a fixed office should be regarded as working time. This
time has not previously been considered as work by many
employers.
This means that employers of security installers as well as
other trades could be in breach of EU working time regulations.
According to the BBC the court said its judgement was about
protecting the "health and safety" of workers as set out in the
European Union's working time directive. The directive is
designed to protect workers from exploitation by employers, and
it lays down regulations on matters such as how long employees
work, how many breaks they have, and how much holiday they
are entitled to.
One of its main goals is to ensure that no employee in the EU
is obliged to work more than an average of 48 hours a week.
The ruling apparently came about because of an ongoing
legal case in Spain involving security company Tyco which closed
its regional offices in 2011, resulting in employees travelling
varying distances before arriving at their first appointment.
The court ruling said: "The fact that the workers begin and
finish the journeys at their homes stems directly from the
decision of their employer to abolish the regional offices and not
from the desire of the workers themselves. Requiring them to
bear the burden of their employer's choice would be contrary to
the objective of protecting the safety and health of workers
pursued by the directive, which includes the necessity of
guaranteeing workers a minimum rest period."
Suzanne Horne, Partner and Employment Lawyer at Paul
Hastings LLP said: “The ruling from the European Court of Justice
that for those employees without a fixed place of work, travel
time between their first and last appointments should be
regarded as ‘working time’ is another blow to UK employers
which impacts the bottom line.
“The decision has immediate application and employers have
no choice but to comply. This will create a serious burden for
companies at a time when there is already pressure to foot the
increasing salary bill resulting from case law on holiday pay,
increased National Minimum Wage and next year’s new National
Living Wage.
“Aside from the salary costs, there are additional questions
about how this impacts an employee’s entitlement to daily rest
breaks and the 48 hour maximum working week, as well as other
employer liabilities, such as travel expenses.
“While employers work out the finer detail, it is obvious that
this decision will add fuel to the Brexit debate.”
A Government spokesperson for the Department of Business,
Innovation and Skills told PSI: “We are carefully considering the
implications of this judgement.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL DUALCOM
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon
Banks talks to Georgia
Riley, New Business
Manager of Ambush
Security Systems Ltd one of the
leading providers of security
solutions in Greater London, serving
commercial and domestic customers throughout
the wider London area.
Ambush Security Systems has flourished as a result of
acquisitions. What’s the strategy behind this?
It all began with the purchase of Jaguar Alarm Company which
immediately tripled our contracts. Growing by acquisition is a quick
way to take a business to the next level. In order to have success,
the transition must remain seamless for the end-user. It’s also worth
noting that you inherit everything from the business you acquire,
good and bad! Often the lucrative contracts go hand-in-hand with
outdated equipment so it’s important to have an upgrade plan. Our
latest acquisition increased our reach in Hertfordshire and
Buckinghamshire in addition to adding to the base.
Does the majority of your business come from the Domestic or
Commercial market?
We offer installations of all sizes, from small domestic wireless
systems to large, complex commercial systems. We have some very
high profile customers including a well known football club, and
companies with high security needs who require protection for high
cash value sites. These commercial clients have smart water and
smoke cloak systems connected to their monitored alarm and a
complex biometrics package together with airlock vaults and
monitored CCTV to name but a few. We also have a number of
customers with systems installed in both their London and country
homes by us.
Have you noticed significant growth in any particular area
recently?
We have seen a definite increase in the number of domestic
properties requesting CCTV installations in both London and the
Home Counties. 95% of the jobs we have completed recently have
opted for a connection for remote viewing via an App. End-users are
less daunted by technology now and it’s much more cost effective
than it once was. Interestingly all of our CCTV installations are wired
as our engineers find the wireless options unreliable. We’ve also
found that once a system goes in on a street, it triggers lots of
copycat purchases from neighbours who want their properties
equally protected.
What have you found to be the most effective way of getting
new business?
The key to our business is our staff and standards. We are extremely
fortunate to have such an excellent team. Our customers recognise
this and spread the word. Our engineers have a great work ethic and
in the last 14 months alone they’ve completed a signalling swap out
of over 300 signalling systems to DualCom. A large commercial client
was recently so impressed with one of our engineers that he was
mentioned in an internal presentation about the success of the
project. We favour the Apprenticeship route at Ambush and believe
it’s the main reason we have such high calibre engineers. Every
Apprentice we have trained has stayed with the company and
progressed through the ranks.
NEWS EXTRA
The Door & Hardware
Federation is advising
security professionals
that householders are
becoming increasingly
aware of cylinder
snapping
“The effectiveness
and reliability of an
access control
security system can
be seriously
compromised by the
incorrect use of door
hardware, including
the choice of locks
and cylinders”
Lock security warning
K police are continuing to warn about the
Uvulnerability of domestic entrance door
locks which burglars can defeat in
seconds in order to break in. They are advising
householders to have their locks inspected
professionally, especially those found on front
and back doors made from PVC-u and composite
materials, which form a high proportion of
domestic entrance doors in the UK.
Michael Skelding, general manager and
secretary of the Door & Hardware Federation,
said: “According to West Yorkshire police,
cylinder snapping is used in 20 to 25% of all
burglaries in their region. Police forces in other
areas of the country are warning householders
that their homes could be at risk from this form
of attack. It is estimated there are 45 million
residential entrance doors in the UK. Almost 70
per cent of these have a Eurocylinder at the
heart of the lock and so are vulnerable to
snapping and other methods of lock attack
which have been revealed extensively on the
internet.
“In response, the DHF, on behalf of the UK
lock industry, has worked with BSI, Secured by
Design and other industry organisations to
develop standards for uprated lock cylinders
and door handles and to ensure there is ready
availability of these products.”
Locksmiths and security professionals
should look for either the TS 007 Kitemark or
the PAS 3621 Kitemark specification to ensure
resistance against lock snapping. If the
complete door assembly has been certified to
PAS 24 specification, then the cylinder will
already be secure against snapping and other
forms of lock attack and the cylinder will not
need changing.
The TS 007 standard uses star ratings and is
subject to certification by the BSI Kitemark. TS
007 is a three star solution. Security to the TS
007 standard can be achieved by either a
combination of a cylinder
(marked with one star)
and security door
furniture such as a
strengthened door handle
(marked with two stars); or
a “super cylinder” (marked
with three stars) that successfully resists snap
attack without the need to fit a strengthened
door handle. In both cases, the same degree of
resistance against attack is provided.
DHF member Duncan Crawley, group
managing director of Securefast plc: "Without
doubt the introduction of the Technical Standard
TS007 for cylinder security, with its defined star
rating system for cylinders and their protective
furniture, has clearly transformed the
uncertainty in the security industry by providing
clearly defined levels of specification, which is
applicable to new developments and all
replacement security cylinders and protective
door furniture.
"With the options to offer a 3 star cylinder or
a 1 star cylinder with 2 star protective
escutcheons or door furniture, many installers
and fitters of mechanical security products are
aware of the importance to fit these type of
products on external doors or internal security
doors.
"However, this can in turn raise questions for
the installer of access control systems when it
comes to correctly selecting the appropriate star
rated cylinder and ascertaining its suitability.
This situation particularly applies with
electronic locks, electrical releases, door entry
systems, key switches and the operation of
shutter locks. In short the effectiveness and
reliability of an access control security system
can be seriously compromised by the incorrect
use of door hardware, including the choice of
locks and cylinders.
"It is therefore vitally important that the
appropriate star rating of cylinder to be installed
fully complies with the equivalent level of
security stipulated by the access control
supplier. In the majority installations the 3 star
rated security cylinder is predominantly the
recommended standard cylinder for high
security access control equipment. Nevertheless
in many cases a 1 star rated cylinder can be
upgraded to comply with the 3 star rating with
the addition of 2 star reinforced door hardware
or with the addition of a 2 star rated security
cylinder escutcheon."
in the near future, it's
clear we need an
alternative approach
A new chapter
he introduction of the Trailblazer
Tapprenticeships was one of the
cornerstones of the Coalition's
apprenticeship reforms. This policy enabled
employers to take the lead the on
apprenticeship development, putting the
responsibility for developing standards for a
variety of industries in the hands of groups
consisting of employers, and, later on in the
process, industry stakeholders.
And this was an opportunity which our
industry seized upon. A group of employers, led
by Pat Allen of Abel Alarms, came together and
put a submission into the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). This
submission was approved in August, giving our
industry an apprenticeship that is designed and
developed around the needs of employers and
is recognised by the entire industry.
It also means we will be able to offer
someone seeking a career in our industry a
structured apprenticeship that will help them
take the first step towards becoming a qualified
fire, security and emergency systems installer,
something we have needed for a long time.
Our industry's previous approach to training
at entry level has been to either train newly
qualified electricians in the skills needed to
work with emergency systems or carry out inhouse
training with existing staff. This may have
worked in the past, but it's a very short-sighted
and somewhat risky approach that makes us
dependent on the success of other industries'
apprenticeship and adult vocational progammes
to fill vacancies for key roles in ours.
Given that a high proportion of electrical
contracting businesses expect to face a skills
shortage in the near future, it's clear we need an
alternative approach. Four years of low
apprentice starts, brought on by the
worst recession in living memory,
means that there will be less
and less electricians
qualifying who
might be
tempted to
move into
our
industry,
and, as a result, we will need to look for other
means of recruiting new entrants.
Sadly, very few young people are aware of
our industry and the tremendous potential it
offers for long and fulfilling careers - despite the
efforts of those in the industry to promote the
fact. And this is something that needs to be
addressed to ensure that we have sufficient
numbers coming in at entry-level. Initiatives like
the “Inspiring the Future” campaign, which
involves professionals going into schools to talk
about their careers in their respective
industries, and the "100 in 100 campaign" will
help to promote our industry to a wider
audience and showcase the variety and diversity
of our businesses. But it’s only really a start. We
need to work harder to raise our profile in order
to compete for good people’s attention at this
critical time.
The irony is that the security systems sector
would appeal greatly to tech-savvy young
people if only they knew. As IP technology for
installation and monitoring continues to grow,
we have a unique opportunity to present the
security systems sector as a place where young
people can develop skills they already use for
leisure to build a career. Here is a generation of
people for whom social media and IT are second
nature, yet we are failing to attract them.
We need to promote the fire and security
industry as an attractive and lucrative career
path for people starting work for the first time
but also for people outside of the industry who
demonstrate a good work ethic and enthusiasm
to learn.
Having our own apprenticeship is the first
step towards this, and the decision to approve
our Trailblazer submission comes at a time
when the market is picking up, when
cybersecurity is a high-profile issue and when
the profile, credibility and demand for
apprenticeships has never been higher.
Hopefully this will mean we'll be able to
capitalise on the enthusiasm for
apprenticeships and the role our industry has to
play in helping the battle against cyber-crime to
recruit and train the talent we need to prosper in
the future.
BUSINESS
As the security
industry has
experienced huge app
development over the
last few years what
can we learn from the
recent news that the
British Gas app is in
hot water?
Read the full version
of this article in
The Paper:
www.thepaper.uk.com
Apps and insecurities
he Which? probe into smart thermostat
Tsystems revealed that the Hive app was
sending data that included what times
heating was set to go on and off, along with
labels such as ‘awake’ and ‘away’, unencrypted -
so someone who had tapped into the
homeowner’s wi-fi would be able to see what
was sent.
Described by certain media outlets as a
'burglar's dream' that could tell criminals the
best time to break in, the Hive Active Heating
app is intended to allow customers to heat their
homes remotely and programme a schedule for
when to turn the heating on and off. However
the lack of encryption means that hackers could
access the information and make their own
judgements on the most likely time for an
uninterrupted spot of burglary.
British Gas has now agreed to start
encrypting the data, in a bid to reassure
customers that their personal information will
remain safe.
The problem is that British Gas assumed that
people would be utilising the encryption that
comes with most wi-fi routers, but as we know
members of the public don’t always do what
they should. Encryption and passwords are part
of the router set-up procedure, one protects the
data you are sending and the other stops the
unwanted hijacking of your internet service.
Hive told Which? that while it did not believe
there were security risks, it has now encrypted
this information. It acknowledged it wasn’t best
practice to expect people to have encrypted wifi.
As a result of these findings, British Gas said
it had immediately changed its app to make it
more secure.
A spokesman said: 'We're constantly
changing and updating the app in response to
customer feedback. Some of the information
about your heating schedule wasn't encrypted,
but it has been encrypted now.'
She claimed that only a hacker who was
'super technologically literate' would have been
able to access any data sent by the Hive app.
Which? also found that Nest was sending out
data on user's postcodes without encrypting it,
despite claiming that the information was
secure.
All of which follows on from many
discussions you hear going on in the security
industry as to the safety and security of the
‘Internet of Things’ or IoT as this type of
technology is called. Especially pertinent today
as so many company have come to the
conclusion that they must have an app
(everybody’s got an app, haven’t they?)
irrespective of what their company function or
product portfolio is.
The latest estimates indicate (as of July 2015)
there are 1.6million apps for Android users and
1.5million for Apple devices. A lot of people are
producing apps!
We’ve recently experienced a similar rush to
meet a perceived market demand for smart
technology as we had in the 90s when it was
suddenly decreed that everybody absolutely
must have a website. This dash toward online
content resulted in the mass creation of web
content that quite often missed the mark and,
while it gave the company the chance to boast
“yes we have a website”, this networked marvel
of marketing was no more than the company
brochure or catalogue listing in electronic
format.
It has taken about twenty years for the
widespread Internet to reach the state it is in
today and there cannot be many, if any, sites
that have remained unchanged from day one.
This is something that app developers,
manufacturers and vendors need to keep in
mind, especially those in the security industry.
Early apps were again, often no more than
automatic links to company brochures or
catalogues and it has only been in the last few
years, as the take-up of smartphones has wiped
out just about all other forms of mobile phones
that the app has developed sufficiently so that
we can see where the future for this tool might
go.
The app is a business boon for installers. It’s
great to be able to offer customers something
on top of just the hardware and it can also lead
to recurring revenue further on in the contract
period. What you don’t need to be doing is
fitting something that is inadvertently putting
customers and your future business at risk with
an unsafe feature or service.
Four new entry level cameras
Axis Communications has strengthened its family
of Axis P55 pan/tilt/zoom dome cameras with the
launch of four new entry-level HDTV models.
Axis P5514 is for indoor video surveillance
applications such as small industries,
shopping centres and hotel receptions. It is
an HDTV 720p camera with 12x optical
zoom, and with IP51 protection against
dust. The AxisS P5515 model offers the
same zoom performance and dust
protection but features HDTV
1080p resolution for more image
detail.
Axis P5514-E is an IP66-
protected outdoor camera that is
resistant to water, wind and
snow. Its HDTV 720p resolution
and 12x zoom makes it suitable for
monitoring small outdoor areas such
as schoolyards, car parks, car
dealerships etc. The HDTV 1080p
version, Axis P5515-E, offers a higher
resolution as well as 12x zoom and IP66
protection.
Compared to previous generations of the
cameras, the new Axis P55 network camera
models provide increased analytics performance.
Built-in intelligent functionalities include audio
detection and Advanced Gatekeeper, allowing the
cameras to detect an object in a specified area and
zoom in on it. With their support for AxisCamera
Application Platform, other video analytics
applications can be downloaded to the cameras.
Perimeter detection solutions
for the digital age
GJD has announced its D-TECT IP range, which
includes PIR, microwave and anti-masking. Key
benefits include increased detector alignment and
set up options, genuine alarm capture and
resistance to false or ‘nuisance’ alarms. Another
benefit is remote diagnostic control of the perimeter
boundary detection systems.
The range integrates with third party VMS
providers and CCTV systems. Bosch VMS,
Milestone Xprotect, Mirasys,
SeeTec Enterprise and Probox
are a few of the supported VMS
software providers. Supported
cameras for direct control
currently include Axis, Bosch,
Ernitec, Hikvision and Sony.
All of the IP detectors use
Power over Ethernet connectivity,
which enable cameras to be
instantly directed to the location of
intrusion; whilst security personnel are
alerted with detailed alarm information. The
detectors can be adjusted to suit different customer
requirements including adjustable field of view,
which helps avoid boundary overspill, saving both
energy and costs.
Hybrid option for quick
change to 1080p
360 Vision Technology has
launched a ‘Hybrid’ upgrade
option for the company’s
range of Predator PTZ all-inone
cameras. The optional
upgrade provides both
analogue and HD
functionality for any Predator camera model
meaning that when a traditional surveillance
installation moves to HD infrastructure, standard
analogue 4:3 images (in HD quality) can be
replaced with Full HD 1080p widescreen images
– at the flick of a switch and with no additional
equipment required.
Upgrade for broswer-based
access control system
Grosvenor Technology has
launched an upgraded
version of its browserbased
access control
system Sateon.
Sateon 2.9 has been
designed to make interaction and
administration easier for end users; and to
assist integrators with opening up new
opportunities in the offline lock market.
Improved user interaction will be achieved
via a Personnel Hub – which allows end users
to manage personnel, token and department
data with ease. Sateon 2.9 will also feature a
new ‘Faces’ module, enabling photo
verification for personnel as they progress
through the workplace offering an additional
layer of security where temporary security staff
are commonly employed.
Clear and concise dialogue fields will
highlight any reasons why access is not
permitted, ensuring that security personnel
can take appropriate action in a quicker time
frame; while an auto-logout feature offers
additional security for users who have not
used their device for a period of time.
Sateon 2.9 integrates with the SALTO Pro
Access database to provide a single view of all
locks, users and access; meaning that systems
integrators can benefit from decreased time
and costs. www.grosvenortechnology.com
The first impressions are of a well presented
wireless door intercom with clear installation
instructions.
As supplied the standard iVision+ package
includes one Handheld Monitor Unit and one Door
Unit. The monitor unit and door unit are already
“paired” together using a “Home ID” unique
identification number. An additional door unit can
be added to the system for front and rear door
use and three more monitor handsets can be
added if required. Additional items are simply
linked in using a pairing button.
An optional Gateway Chime Unit is available to
provide an additional sounder and to give a relay
output to release a suitably controlled door.
As with all such 2.4GHz devices the range may
be severely limited by building structures and
metallic surfaces so it is sensible to test for actual
performance before permanently fixing in place.
The manufacturer’s website includes a useful
guide to the attenuation of signal for various
construction materials.
Getting started
Ease of installation is a major benefit of this
system. The monitor handset charging cradle can
be desk or wall mounted close to a suitable mains
power socket. The door unit should ideally be
powered from a local power supply source but can
operate on battery supply for reasonable periods
of time. Three AA cells can be fitted internally; the
installation guide states that these should last 12
months, but this is based on just three ten second
activations per day so a suitable calculation will
need to be made for higher usage levels.
Both the Door Unit and the Gateway unit have
removable back panels that can be fixed to the
wall with their pre-drilled fixing holes serving as a
template for any necessary drilling.
Setting-up the system is relatively simple
although it did take some time for the monitor
handset to initially charge to a suitable level for
operation to begin.
The door unit can operate on battery supply
and while this may not be advisable for
permanent installations could be useful for
temporary set-ups and is very helpful to confirm
operation in potentially difficult locations where
building structure or electrical noise could be a
problem.
While battery operation of the door unit
worked well, the use of an external power supply
(not supplied) gives the advantage of an
illuminated bell push symbol and the ability to
view the live image from the camera and hear any
external sounds by pressing the “Browse” button
on the handset.
Menu Options
The handset has a straightforward menu structure
that is accessed by holding down the left function
button for more than 3 seconds. This gives the
following 4 options and their sub-menus or
details.
1. TIME & DATE
The currently stored Date and Time is
presented as YYYY/MM/DD MM:SSAM with
cursor control to increment or decrement the
highlighted values in pairs from left to right.
2. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
2.1. NUMBER OF CAPTURING IMAGE – allows
from 0 to 10 images to be stored when the call
button is pressed. The first image is within one
second of the push, the second is 4 seconds later
and then any additional images are stored at 1
second intervals.
2.2. TALK SWITCHING SET-UP – adjusts the
management of noise levels to control two way
speech handling.
2.3. DOOR OPEN DURATION SETUP – scrolls
through 1, 5, 30 or 60 seconds option for each of
Doors 1 and 2.
3. DEVICES IN NETWORK
Displays the number of devices in the system,
listed in order as Handheld Monitor unit, Gateway
Chime unit and Door Camera Unit.
4. PC CONNECTION
“Connect to PC” Yes or No selection. This
function can only be activated when connected to
a PC and then the handset screen will display “PC
CONNECTION MODE” until the Back button is
pressed or the PC is disconnected.
20 www.psimagazine.co.uk

Performance
When the door unit push-button is activated by a
caller, the handset sounds a chime tone and
presents a live video feed from the door unit
camera onto its display. Pressing “ANSWER” on
the handset then allows two-way audio between
the handset and door unit; the “OFF” button can
be used to end a call or to ignore an unwanted
call.
The Gateway unit can be used as a Chime
repeater with 4 volume settings being pushbutton
selected in a rolling sequence. A slider
switch turns the unit’s sound off, if being used for
door control only. For door control the Gateway
Unit has a changeover relay so that either a
normally closed or normally open switching state
can be provided to control or interface with a
suitable locking device or access control system.
If a Gateway Chime Unit and suitable lock
interfacing is fitted to the system then the
operator can press the handset’s “OPEN DOOR”
button to release a connected door lock.
The camera gave good image quality and
handled subject back-illumination well. Even with
bright sunlight behind the subject facial details
are clearly discernible. The night-time
performance is equally good albeit in
monochrome with LED illumination of the subject.
The door unit camera’s angle of view is not
stated in the specification list but was measured
as approximately 64° horizontal by 46° vertical so
is based on a 4x3 aspect ratio image sensor. The
camera module has an adjustment of +/- 15° in
each direction from the centre and this can be
adjusted from the rear of the door unit prior to
mounting onto its back plate.
There are four chime volume levels on the
handset changed by the Up and Down cursor
keys. Simple intuitive buttons control all other
tasks. These are laid out in four rows with the top
row of 2 function buttons used for assignable
menu functions such as “OK” and “BACK”, the
next row of 3 are labelled “OPEN DOOR”,
“ANSWER” and “OFF”.
The next row of 3 are “SNAP” to capture a still
image of anything being displayed from the door
unit, an up arrow for cursor control and a “PLAY”
button that shows stored images and serves as an
occasional cursor right function.
The final row of 3 are “BROWSE” to show a live
image from the Door unit, a down arrow for cursor
control and a “BRIGHTNESS” button that
sequences through 5 levels of display brightness
to suit the viewing environment.
It is stated in the manual that the handheld
unit can store up to 500 images and will then
overwrite the earliest images as new ones are
added. There is a later recommendation however
that a monthly erase of all images is performed to
“reduce a risk of memory failure”.
Pressing the PLAY button allows the stored
images to be scrolled through with an on-screen
indicator showing the image number and total
images stored. The right function button allows
the current image to be deleted following a YES /
NO verification, alternatively holding down the
PLAY button for over 3 seconds allows all images
to be deleted after verification.
When connected to a PC, the files appear as
standard JPEG images in a “DCIM” drive folder.
The images are stored as relatively low-resolution
CIF images of 320 x 240 pixels and highly
compressed requiring just under 11KB per image
however these are perfectly adequate for their
purpose. The images have no embedded time and
date data. The files are stored in a non-removable
14MB internal memory and are named from
IM_00000.JPG, incrementing the number for each
file added. An additional file “FILE_IDX.SYS”
keeps track of the 5 digit number sequence in
non-delimited format that can be viewed using a
basic text editor.
While the files on the handheld unit hold their
creation date and time, this attribute’s value is
lost when files are copied to the PC and are
replaced with the time and date of the copy being
made so there is then no way to verify the original
time of image capture if the door unit files are
deleted. Once files are deleted any remaining files
are re-indexed meaning that the file name is not
unique; so if storing files for future reference, a
suitable dated PC sub-folder structure would be
advisable to prevent images being inadvertently
overwritten.
In addition to the charger unit the handset can
be charged using its USB connection from a
suitable charger or PC port.
Conclusion
An impressive wireless video intercom system
that is simple to install and configure. It is very
well suited to domestic and small commercial
installations or any situation that requires visitor
identification with the added flexibility of portable
response handsets.
The camera gave
good image quality
well. Even with bright
TEST
9.0 out of 10
TOOL TEST
One of the hazards of any trade is the stripped screw head
or broken bolt and these can cause hold ups on the job.
How do you cope with this scenario?
While we’ve all got our own favourite
methods for getting a stripped screw out,
such as using an elastic band around the
driver head, hacksawing a new thread or using
copious amounts of WD40 and very slowly
teasing the screw out, there are systems
designed specifically to extract broken screws.
One such solution is the SpeedOut damaged
screw and bolt remover. With the system it is
claimed that “you can easily remove any stripped
screw in ten seconds or less” and “if you can use
a drill, you can use the SpeedOut” so we thought
we would put the kit to the test in a real
installation. We had to wait a while until we came
across a genuinely stripped screw, rather than a
deliberately damaged one so that it was a real
world test, but we found one when changing a
Eurocylinder lock mechanism on a uPVC door (see
photo blow left). Clearly someone had attempted
to change the cylinder before but had been
unsuccessful and stripped the screw.
The extraction process involves using one of
the four supplied bits to firstly drill out the
required sized hole ready for the other end of the
bit which is used to free the screw. The bits are in
four different sizes 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm
so cover a range of screw size options.
We first took the #2 bit (6mm) and,
setting the drill in reverse, drilled the
required hole into the stripped screw.
After a quick blow to clear away
debris and flipping the bit over to the
extraction end we were ready for
removal. Unfortunately the bit did not
bite so we switched to the #3 bit
(8mm) and fitted the extraction end.
This time the bit did catch and the
screw came out (see right) much to
the relief of the homeowner who
really wanted new locks fitted!
The key to extracting the stripped
screw is to set the drill in reverse and
extract slowly. The slower the drill
speed the better as a quick look at
online reviews of the system do show
people complaining that the bit broke
while attempting extraction. It is vital
that the extraction is carried out
slowly as you can see from the build
of the bit where the break point would
The stripped screw preventing removal
The SpeedOut screw extractor
drill bit set
be if you put too much rotational pressure on it.
The bits are designed to work with any 3/8”
variable speed, reversible drill but not with impact
drivers or drywall/sheetrock screws.
The set can be purchased online for around £5
on web market sites and there are other versions
available from the likes of Draper, PTX, Rolson
and Trend for example, but the SpeedOut is the
one that has featured on television infomercials
so might be one that has caught your eye. The
bits are supplied in a storage box and fit nicely
along with the drill in the carry case so we
recommend getting hold of a set, if you haven’t
already, as you never know what you will face
next time you go out on a job.
The stripped screw is slowly extracted
INTERVIEW
Certified benefits for installers
he National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is
Tone of the leading certification bodies for
the security and fire protection industries.
Richard Jenkins joined NSI in March 2014 and
comes from a general business background
including the engineering and vehicle
industries.
Richard’s expertise includes business
reorganisation, supply chain integration,
process design and customer focussed strategic
development. Prior to NSI, his most recent role
was with IKEA where he developed and
implemented IKEA’s auto enrolment pension
scheme strategy and led the work launching
their UK internet and home shopping delivery
service and continuous improvement
programme.
PSI caught up with Richard six months before
the 2016 NSI Summit event will take place in
Birmingham to find out how the NSI views the
evolution of the modern security world and
policing the certification of security and fire
installers.
How has the last year been for NSI and
yourself?
The year passed by incredibly quickly. For me, a
steep learning curve within a wholly new
environment in two senses: firstly, in
certification and secondly, in the security
industry. For NSI a whirl of activity with more
clients serviced than ever before, three installer
summits within 13 months, and a huge amount
of work behind the scenes to ensure our service
levels remain strong – and the owl came back!
You have a non-security background, so
what attracted you to joining the NSI last
year?
NSI is clearly a phenomenal brand, which is held
in the highest regard within the industry as
providing the Gold Standard of accreditation to
businesses themselves determined to deliver
the highest standards. It’s an SME by any
measure yet it has punched and continues to
punch well above its weight, in fulfilling its
mission. Industry ‘lifers’ and their clients tell me
that. I saw a great opportunity to build further
on an already great service, truly a little gem,
and haven’t been disappointed.
What role does a certification body have
in the modern security business world
where price is so often the deciding
factor in contract wins?
Of course price is always a factor, but most
customers in the final analysis want value.
Sometimes that equates to price but clearly by
no means always. Customers want assurance,
assurance they are buying value from a business
-large or small- that has integrity, is competent
and professional in delivering services, whether
that be electronic security, fire safety, or in
guarding services.
Certification bodies deliver accreditation that
is a hallmark customers can rely on. I think I can
reflect the views of all NSI approved companies
who are not complacent about competitiveness
but are equally totally committed to delivering
quality. NSI Gold supports that.
How keen are you to ensure that
companies that let standards slip are
removed of their NSI approval?
It’s always a sad day when NSI is unable to
renew an approval, and the processes we have
in place to shine light on poor practise are there
first and foremost to provide guidance to
businesses who by and large take such
feedback and build on it to strengthen their
operations.
Our job is to draw attention to potential
issues in good time and do what we are able to
alert approved companies where necessary. And
believe me we do. Our auditors have more
accumulated experience in the sector than any
other group, and our focus on sharing best
practise between them only strengthens their
capability.
We do lose some companies every year,
including a very few who withdraw from our
recertification regime ie they jump before we
can push, and even seek approval elsewhere.
Our job is raising standards. We cannot do
that on our own. Our new strap line “…,together
raising standards..” is all about team work and
delivering confidence to the customer. And if a
small number of clients really are unable or
willing to make the grade then we have a clear
duty to act - and we do.
(continued over)
This month we talk to
Richard Jenkins, Chief
Executive, NSI about
certification,
competition and
evolution
“Our auditors have
more accumulated
experience in the
sector than any other
group, and our focus
on sharing best
practise between them
only strengthens their
capability”
NSI Gold who put
amongst the most
professional and
committed in the
industry, and long
26
(continued from previous page)
What happens when you discover a
company advertising themselves as NSI
approved when they are not?
We take prompt and if necessary severe action
to protect the use of logo. It is a blight on the
good name of over 1800 approved companies
when such transgressions occur, and we act
accordingly.
What kind of relationship do you have
with SSAIB and how do you set
yourselves apart?
NSI and SSAIB are two fantastic brands
delivering a great service, working in the same
marketplace. Of course we are competitors, but
we share many of the same values, without
which sharing the industry would be the poorer.
Our intent is to collaborate when it is in the
interest of raising standards in the industry, in a
variety of areas and for example in standards
committees. Beyond that we allow the market to
judge our differences.
At NSI we believe the strongest hallmark of
integrity, competence and professionalism is
wrapped up in NSI Gold certification. It
embodies Quality Management Systems and
‘Product and Service’ competence in a single
easy to understand approval. Frankly, one
without the other is only half the story. It’s in the
NSI DNA that if a customer wants his cake and
to eat it, he needs NSI Gold or equivalent – it’s
as simple as that. It’s something we are
convinced serves the industry and its customers
most comprehensively.
The NSI Summit events have been very
successful so can we expect them to
become firm fixtures in the security
calendar?
I am often asked this question, and often from
those who have a view that NSI is stepping
outside its brief or mandate in running these
installer events. For me it’s quite
straightforward. NSI is in the not-for-profit
business of raising standards in the industry,
and delivering value to our approved company
clients.
Our mandate is to audit and certificate
businesses that seek approval, and to educate
and inform them about changes in standards
and technology that will support them in
delivering high standards to their clients. Our
Installer Summit sponsors and exhibitors are
willing partners in making these events happen
and our approved companies clearly believe the
investment in their time is worth their while –
we almost have a duty to make it happen. Our
next Summit is on the 10th March 2016 – and the
indications are it will prove more popular than
the last three.
Recently we had an alarm company hit
the headlines after using illegal sales
techniques. How do you feel when you
read stories like these?
There are rogue companies out there in all
sectors. In the security sector it is particularly
galling when people are harassed, preyed on,
and fears aroused to get the better of their
sound judgement.
It’s disappointing also that the local media
who run stories like this do not take the
opportunity to explain that there are bona fide
businesses out there in local communities who
do provide security products and services with
integrity. The challenge for householders is
knowing where to look.
Companies with certificates of approval
equivalent to NSI Gold who put themselves
through annual independent audit regimes are
amongst the most professional and committed
in the industry, and long may they reign.
How do you think the security industry
will evolve over the next few years?
Technologies will continue to evolve at an ever
increasing pace, competition will be fierce,
customers’ quest for value will strengthen, the
integration of technologies will blur the
boundaries of the industry as we know it, and
harnessing technology smartly will be the key.
Integrity, competency and professionalism from
businesses you can trust with your people,
assets and data will always be a value to the
client concerned about security – approved
companies that rise to those challenges will
prosper and thrive.
PROMOTION
Revenues and customers
Developments in intruder alarm panels offer regular revenue
streams from customers, but are you ready for the business?
n last month’s PSI magazine we looked at
Ihow intruder alarms have developed and how
manufacturers bring technology to market
that meets expressed demands from the
installer and end users.
One of the developments we focused on was
remotely setting and unsetting panels using
technology that essentially converts a smart
device into a keypad.
One company behind such a system is
Pyronix, who have launched their app-based
solution, the Enforcer HomeControl+, which
utilises an IP Cloud platform as its gateway for
communication.
In the modern world the launch of an app is
nothing new, however, in the security industry
the use of an app working alongside established
technology like an Enforcer panel brings many
benefits for both installers and end users.
“We recognise that it is still very early days
for app-based solutions in the security
industry,” Guy Dodd, UK Sales Director at
Pyronix, said. “When it comes to intruder
alarms, the technology is well established and
installers are used to one model of installation,
but the introduction of app and Cloud
infrastructure is not a completely alternate
system.
“In actual fact, it adds an extra element to
conventional installations by generating
recurring revenue while improving the
maintenance and management of the system.”
The app-based panel is not a technology
looking for a market either; it serves a real
purpose by meeting the requirements of an
ever-connected customer base.
But not every installer is necessarily aware of
why offering app-based technology is essential
for generating future business opportunities
and recurring revenue streams.
“In the domestic market I would guess that
the number of app panels sold compared to
regular systems is in the region of one in every
100,” Guy said. “As our lives become
increasingly connected and remote intruder
access follows the surveillance sector model,
this will change very quickly.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
“My personal opinion at the
moment is that installers are selling
app panels, but only when the customer
is asking for them – we need to get into
the position where installers are
presenting both options and allowing
the customer to choose.
“We know that as the technology
develops we will have to help installers
to get the most out of what the systems can
do in terms of recurring revenue as well as guide
them through the installation and setup
process.
“We also need to help them market the
technology to their customers, as the clientbase
is increasingly more versed in the day-today
benefits of apps and if we can make them
more aware of how alarms, and further down
the line, home automation with security makes
their lives easier and safer, then the uptake of
the systems will grow – which, as a
manufacturer, we have a responsibility to do.”
This is a great idea as if a demand can be
generated, especially one that involves
recurring revenue, then this will help installers
win new business rather than selling a
conventional system bought as a grudge
purchase.
Continuous development of app services is
also a factor for future growth in business, for
example the opportunity to have installer
branded apps (in the same way we have
branded bell boxes) gives the installer a unique
product for their service offering.
“Going forward the security market is going
to change and we will have competition from all
kinds of companies including media, telco and
utility providers so installers really need to
recognise that the evolution to smarter security
is happening right now,” Guy said. “People can
choose to stay operating the way they are and
hope that business arises or they can utilise app
and Cloud based technologies to enable
revenues to come in as a matter of course,
rather than wait for the next installation or
service, which adds significant value to a
business and guarantees stability.”
“People can choose to
stay operating the
way they are and hope
that business arises
or they can utilise app
and Cloud based
technologies”
app panels and Cloud technology
PANEL
Made in China?
How will the UK
security industry be
affected by financial
troubles in China?
The PSI Panel of
experts looks at the
problems for those
sourcing products and
services from the Far
East
“I see a continuance
of the challenge to
members of our
industry to innovate
and drive efficiencies,
wherever they may be
based”
28
For the last few months we have been hearing
about a financial downturn in the prospects
for the Chinese business markets. Some
experts predict that the situation for China could
be worse that experienced by Greece while many
pointers show that troubled times might last until
2017.
With plenty of security technology
manufacturers building kit in China and a number
of Chinese owned companies operating in the UK,
what will be the impact on our security market if
the financial downturn continues? The PSI Panel
is in session….
Jim Ludwig – Texecom
What will be the impact?
Ignoring macro effects on the
global economy, little to none.
Chinese-based businesses,
particularly those which have
built their strategy around lowprices,
will not be able to change overnight and
are unlikely to be successful driving up prices in
the UK to compensate for any loss of volume in
China.
For UK-based companies manufacturing in
China, I imagine continued upward pressure on
labour costs, offset by a beneficial effect on the
cost of commodities (plastics and electronic
components used in our industry) if demand in
that large market stagnates. These reduced
materials costs will benefit all manufacturers,
regardless of where they produce. However, in
past disruptions we have also seen considerable
reductions in component production capacities,
which can result in microprocessor prices and
lead times going up.
From my perspective, manufacturing offshore
has always been somewhat of a false economy –
particularly if the result degrades a company’s
ability to service customers in local markets.
Labour savings available in emerging markets
rarely offset the additional costs associated with
managing a distant supply chain.
The large-scale “re-shoring” into the UK over
the past few years is a clear indication that
effective manufacturing is about much more than
a simple hourly-rate calculation. It’s about
locating manufacturing activities where they can
be best placed to serve the customer, maintain
quality, and quickly respond to changing demand
conditions.
However, things aren’t exactly perfect here at
home. Ever-increasing UK and EU business
regulations, the increased cost of compliance
with the new UK national “living wage”, and
seemingly relentless downward pressure on
security product pricing all conspire to do nothing
to improve our competitiveness against other
countries.
So, my UK forecast remains largely unchanged
– but I see a continuance of the challenge to
members of our industry to innovate and drive
efficiencies, wherever they may be based.
at @SecurityDrum
30
(from page 28)
David Rubens – The
Security Institute
The security technology sector
has already moved through its
first two generations (the first
being the development of new
products, the second being the
integration of those into a wide range of
applications that are both affordable and
technically undemanding), so that there is little, if
any, benefit for the vast majority of customers
from buying top-end technology rather than
entry-level equipment that provides most, if not
all, of the equivalent functionality. Even if the
Chinese market collapses to an extent that
impacts the supply of cheap components, there is
no shortage of emerging Asian economies that
will seize the opportunity to develop an
indigenous manufacturing sector as a way of
boosting their own local, regional and global
business reach.
The challenges will remain the same, namely
how UK companies can add value to their
business offering in a manner that allows them to
compete globally. This can only be done by
offering higher level services associated with
integration; the more complex the systems, the
greater the market benefit. Having recently spent
15 months in West Africa, where my company was
nominated as preferred bidders for a $2m project
for a major airport terminal in Nigeria, I saw that
although we couldn’t compete with local dealers
on component price, we had skills associated
with complex systems integration that
differentiated ourselves from the local market.
After that, it was a matter of developing business
relationships with those organisations that could
potentially benefit from our knowledge, and then
seeing what benefits we could bring to their
operations.
I don’t foresee any up-turn in the local or
global economy any time soon, so it is those
companies that can best manage ‘on the edge’
that will survive through tough times, and thus
be in a position to take advantage of any
subsequent up-turn.
Alistair Enser –
Vanderbilt
For more than two decades
China has been a major
contributor to economic
growth and low global
inflation, so the country’s
recent stock market crash has, understandably,
sent shockwaves around the world. Without
doubt, the 40 per cent drop in the value of
Chinese stocks since June has exposed the
vulnerability of what is purported to be an
international economic recovery.
Like most other industries, the UK’s security
sector will be keeping a keen eye on
developments – and so it should. However, is it
time to panic? I don’t think so.
It’s worth remembering that the pace of
change within a country with almost 1.4 billion
people has been frenetic and pundits have long
predicted a ‘correction’ in its economic fortunes.
For the UK, the biggest problem concerns how
long this process will take – there is precious
little in the government’s armoury left to counter
the effects, with interest rates remaining at a
historical low. A long drawn out downturn could
see confidence knocked and once this hits the
construction sector then security manufacturers
would certainly feel the negative effects.
In addition, security vendors that use China as
their main manufacturing base will be concerned
about the future. However, most organisations
will have pre-empted this by spreading their
activities across other countries and regions.
Eastern Europe is growing in popularity in this
regard and as China moves towards a more
consumer led culture, workers’ demands for
higher pay and improved working conditions
could well put some investors off.
In terms of competition, for UK companies the
so it should. However, is it time to
panic? I don’t think so”
problems in China could have a positive impact in
terms of reducing the number of manufacturers
from that country. This, however, should be
tempered by the prospect of reduced innovation,
which would not be good for the security industry
as a whole.
I’m cautiously optimistic that the UK’s security
industry will remain robust in light of China’s
problems but Vanderbilt will continue to closely
monitor the situation as it unfolds, and act
accordingly.
In the 1980’s component prices
in Europe were the cheapest in
the world due to the
purchasing power of mobile
phone manufacturers, notably
the Scandinavian giants Nokia and Ericsson. As
these companies shifted their production to the
Far East, China became the hub for component
manufacturing. Ultimately this forced European
component prices up, causing the overhead of UK
manufacturing to be unsustainable.
During recent years we have seen this cycle
starting to reverse. Consumer immediacy has
meant that Companies need more flexibility. There
are the hidden costs in overseas manufacturing in
the Far East such as transportation and
management time. These do not always provide
the economies of scale needed. In addition, a
number of the large component manufactures have
shifted their operations to places like Thailand and
Vietnam where labour rates are cheaper.
Our manufacturing has always been UK based
primarily to ensure close control of the production
process, stock control, IPR/patent protection and
product quality. With China’s recent issues we
believe the component market will be more open
as other manufacturers move their bases. This will
not just help prices but availability of key
components decreasing lead times which will
ultimately be good for the industry.
WIRELESS
Giving off the right signals
When it comes to configuring and specifying a wireless fire detection system, a
comprehensive site survey should always be considered a vital part of the process. PSI
spoke to Simon Adams, Business Manager at Gent by Honeywell to find out more
A site survey involves
calculating the number
of transceivers and/or
expanders that will be
required to provide
adequate signal
strength required, and
establishing the best
places to site them
The use of wireless based fire detection
technology has grown massively in recent
years. It has proven to be particularly useful
within environments where minimum disturbance
to the fabric of a building is important, such as
where asbestos is present, or if a quick
installation is required.
Every life safety installation should be
configured according to the specific requirements
of a building and those who inhabit it. The
successful deployment of a wireless fire detection
system will therefore depend upon the building’s
construction, layout and use.
Modern structures that utilise wooden stud
and thin brick walls allow for better penetration of
a signal than older builds that have very thick
walls. Denser materials attenuate the signal and
greatly reduce the distance it can travel, while
stud walls that use a foil backing for increased fire
retardancy can also have a negative impact upon
a wireless system’s effectiveness.
Mobile and cordless phones, wireless video
transmitters and microwave ovens all disperse
channel noise, while other factors that could flood
the airwaves with radio frequency (RF)
interference include passive infrared (PIR) motion
sensors, faulty fluorescent light ballasts or even a
poorly wired light switch. Identifying and
overcoming any issues requires careful planning
and a site survey is the first and most important
step in the installation process.
Number crunching
A site survey involves calculating the number of
transceivers and/or expanders that will be
required to provide adequate signal strength
required, and establishing the best places to site
them. This then needs to be tested in a real world
scenario by taking two transceivers, placing them
in the first two locations to check for good signal
strength, and then doing the same thing for the
others.
Readily available survey equipment is able to
perform a thorough scan on all available
frequencies to detect any sources of interference
or conflict with other wireless systems close by.
Checking the signal quality by using a ‘line of site’
or ‘location to location’ test will provide the
information required to calculate the optimum
placement of devices around the site.
The method will often raise issues – maybe a
wall is made of a different material than originally
thought, or a local source of interference is
detected that reduces signal integrity. By using
the newly gathered data from the survey, areas of
high attenuation can be marked and re-planned,
then tested again for coverage.
Location, location, location
Once this process is completed, the resulting set
of floor plans will have clearly marked locations
for transceiver placement and basic configuration
information. Taking photos of these locations can
also be useful when planning the installation, as
it affords the installers knowledge of the
environment, where they are installing it and
therefore what equipment will be required.
The floor plans should also have a 'heat map'
that shows the signal strength measured during
the survey. It is also important to note other
wireless networks that are running nearby and
the operating channels detected in each area of
the site. This allows the installers to plan ahead
and decide in advance what channels they should
configure the equipment for.
Areas identified with weak signals or high
levels of interference can be re-planned using the
same methods. It is possible that by moving a
transceiver better results can be achieved and it
might be better to add an extra device – a method
that can result in more stable coverage.
Ultimately, it is advisable to look for the worstcase
scenario and design accordingly by building
in sufficient levels of redundancy.
WIRELESS
It is not cheap to
equip an installer for
surveying, but by
offering a complete
solution that can
ultimately save
clients a lot of
headaches, money
and lost confidence,
it is a process that
mustn’t be ignored
(from page 32)
Avoiding the pitfalls
The main pitfall to avoid is to
carry out a site survey when
a building is empty or not
being used in its normal
manner. Customers
often ask installers to
attend a site when
during quiet periods or
other downtime. This is
especially common in
schools and other
educational
establishments, where
such an activity might be
more convenient during
school holidays. However, this
should be avoided, as it does not give a true
representation of the obstacles faced by wireless
signals on a day-to-day basis.
The structure of the building, including doors
and windows, as well as people and the electronic
devices that they use can have a significant
impact on the ability of signals to operate at full
strength and can drastically affect the tolerance of
values. Therefore, it is always advisable to ask
about the type of equipment that is used in the
building and carry out the survey when it is fully
occupied.
Plan of action
Carrying out a site survey is a time consuming
process and can take anything up to a full day to
complete, depending on the building. However, it
is important to understand that spending a little
time planning ahead can save a lot on
retrospective remedies.
Likewise, it is not cheap to equip an installer
for surveying, but by offering a complete solution
that can ultimately save clients a lot of
headaches, money and lost confidence, it is a
process that mustn’t be ignored.
Put simply, without undertaking a survey an
accurate quote for equipment cannot be done and
without this quote a decision whether to use the
system or not cannot be made.
Raising standards
It doesn't just make good sense for best practice
reasons – BS 5839-1:2013 states that installation
of a system should only take place following a
detailed site survey.
It also advises that all results at survey stage
are recorded and again at commissioning stage
for future reference. This data should include
signal levels relating to all the radio devices and
the background noise level, and confirmation that
these signal levels are in compliance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations. In the case of a
networked system, this should also include the
signal levels for the radio links between panels. In
addition to other servicing recommendations in
other parts of this standard, this should be
undertaken at each routine service visit.
It is important to note that only radio survey
test equipment that has been approved by the
manufacturer, and regularly calibrated in
accordance with its recommendations, should be
used to carry out the survey.
Similarly, EN 54-25 was established to ensure
that wireless fire detection systems provide the
same level of protection as their hardwired
counterparts. It specifies the requirements for
how wireless systems operate, such as bidirectional
communication, redundancy through
dual battery back up, minimum battery life,
improved fault monitoring and a defined product
testing procedures, as well as the importance of
conducting a thorough site survey.
Selection procedure
Once the process has been completed and a
building’s suitability for wireless fire detection
has been ascertained, only a system that has
third-party approval and is EN 54-25 and BS 5839-
1:2013 compliant should be used. Each device
must be marked with the number of the standard,
the name of the manufacturer, the model, a CE
mark and the notified product certification body
number.
Using approved products will ensure
intelligent integration that allows analogue
values, fire and fault information, device
addresses and type codes to be transmitted
directly to a control panel. In order to provide a
secure and stable service that reduces unwanted
alarms, it should also possess a selection of
automated adjustment technologies including
channel hopping, amplitude adjustment and drift
compensation to ensure ‘always on’ operation
and support the security and stability of
communications.
Quick fix
The fact that a wireless fire detection system can
be installed quickly and easily means that it
provides a flexible solution for a wide variety of
different circumstances. However, regardless of
the type of building it is to be used in, failing to
carry out a comprehensive site survey could
seriously compromise the effectiveness of this
technology and, quite frankly, is a risk not worth
taking.
PROMOTION
British by design
We’re all familiar with the term ‘buying British’ following marketing campaigns used
across a range of products from food to cars, but is it relevant to the security industry?
One company that believes a strong British
backbone in business is essential is
Hampshire-based Elmdene, which has
been at the forefront of the electronic security and
fire industry for over 50 years. With a strong UK
and international focus, the company’s longevity
and ongoing success can, in part, be attributed to
a strong focus on product innovation,
manufacturing excellence, and significantly an
appreciation of the changing needs of its
customers down the years.
“While we are renowned for designing and
manufacturing innovative products for the
intruder, access control, CCTV and fire markets,
we long ago recognised that we didn’t want to be
a manufacturer that goes into price wars and just
be known for having the cheapest products
available,” says Sharon Ramsay, General Manager
at Elmdene. “We all know from personal
experience that when we have bought something
entirely based on the initial price it has not been a
good decision. While we accept that unit price is
important we feel that cost effectiveness is borne
out from having premium quality, British designed
electronics using specified and tested
components backed up with the local service and
support that our customers deserve.”
Reliability for installers
The expertise of the employees at Elmdene is
beyond doubt, with many ex-installers taking on
the responsibilities for developing and designing
the new product ranges. This experience is what
gives the company the ability to bring to market
systems that meet the needs of the industry,
rather than developing technology and then
trying to find a use for it. But for innovative
products to be successful they need to be
reliable, as Engineering Manager Peter Long
explains:
“When we start to develop new systems we
always make sure that we can make the
technology as robust as we can,” he says. “This is
why we specify any of the necessary components
ourselves and insist that the entire supply chain
meets our standards. From there we start testing
the equipment and this will continue throughout
the development, manufacture and sale of the
product.”
In fact Elmdene tests its products at the
Portsmouth site throughout the lifespan of the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
technology. Some units are soak tested for years
under carefully controlled conditions to ensure
that every system that the company sells will do
what it is supposed to do. This is key to the cost
effectiveness of the Elmdene range.
“Anyone can buy cheap components from
overseas and use them as part of a ‘lowest-pricewins’
contract, but this type of thinking will not be
beneficial for the installer,” says Peter. “It is a
false economy to use cheap components that you
know will probably fail within a short period. We
take every precaution against the possibility of a
unit leaving our warehouse that may not match
the high expectations of our customers and we
continue to do so throughout the time that the
system is in our Product Guide.”
Supporting customers
While there is great emphasis placed on bringing
quality products to market which meet the
requirements of standards including EN54,
EN50131, PD6662:2010, EN60950 and others for
European markets such as NFa2p, NCP and
INCERT, Elmdene backs up the equipment with
customer service and support on an equally high
level.
“We understand that it is important to help our
customers and to be available when they need us,
which is why we have dedicated UK-based
technical support under the control of former
installer David Hayward,” says Sharon. “If you
need help, you don’t want to be restricted by
language barriers and you definitely want to
speak to an expert, not just someone who is
reading the manual to you!”
And if you want service how about same-day
delivery on orders placed before 4pm? Being a
nationwide company, Elmdene has no problem in
getting high volume stock out to UK customers
via its distribution network.
“Our customers know that Elmdene products
are designed, tested and customised in the UK
and they also have the peace of mind that we are
always available to help them when needed,”
says Sharon Ramsay. “Security installers have a
number of requirements and no matter how they
rank these they will have reliability, quality,
support, price and availability on the list. If a
product supplier only meets a few of these
demands then they are not operating in the best
interests of the installer.”
www.elmdene.co.uk
“Our customers know
that Elmdene
products are
designed, tested and
customised in the UK
and they also have
the peace of mind
that we are always
available to help
them when needed”
INNOVATION THROUGH EXPERTISE
What Elmdene makes
The devices in Elmdene's portfolio are, typically, for use in
intruder, access control, CCTV, fire, IT and other general security
applications.
Considering the standout product lines for Elmdene, these
include: energy efficient Switch Mode Power supplies which are up
to 90 per cent efficient (compared to around 50% for linear
alternatives), miniature UPS devices, PoE back-up solutions which
are becoming an important requirement in an increasingly
networked world, a wide range of external and internal sounders,
hands-free IR exit devices, panic buttons, magnetic contacts, safe
limpets and junction boxes.
Who Elmdene sells to
Not surprisingly, given the variety on offer, Elmdene's products are
purchased by security, fire and other installers to meet a wide
range of site-specific requirements.
To ensure that products are actually available when they are
needed most, Elmdene emphasises that it uses a number of routes
to market to give customers a choice of where to order. The
company is determined to maintain Elmdene's core traditions of
delivering quality products by establishing solid partnerships with
a number of carefully chosen distributors.
In the case of OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers),
Elmdene is happy to discuss the possibility of entering into a
strategic relationship for bespoke products should the product and
quantities involved meet the relevant criteria. This, Elmdene
stresses, has certainly led to ongoing successful collaborations.
An innovative approach
With innovation at the company's core, Elmdene doesn't just just
sit back and wait for others to take the lead. The business places a
strong emphasis on research and development to drive this
process.
Considerable effort goes into identifying gaps in provision
across the market and providing solutions that have been created
to help solve real on-the-ground issues. The new range of PoE UPS
power devices is a prime example of this.
Made to order
Elmdene has over 45,000sq/ft of manufacturing space with just
under 90 staff at its base in Portsmouth allowing it to build and
customise equipment to suit the exact requirements of its
customers. According to Global Procurement Director Rick Hellaby
this level of flexibility is simply not possible with an overseas
supplier:
“With the diversity of the product we stock and the in-house
expertise we have, we are increasingly producing bespoke
customised systems for our customers,” says Rick. “We can also
combine our customers own equipment within our power supplies
that we can then brand for them using our own screen printing
facilities.”
For example, the flexibility of Elmdene’s manufacturing plant
means that the company can produce individually tailored bell
boxes of all sizes and colours and print any logos/designs onto the
units as the customer requires.
“Our order book for customising and manufacturing bespoke
units is definitely growing,” says Rick. “This is aided by the fact
that we can also test the systems for our customers and turn
orders around very quickly. People are quite surprised to see a
major company like Elmdene offer such a personalised service to
the industry.”
POE-PSM-4
Elmdene’s POE-PSM-4 is a unique
PoE power saving solution for
installers of IP systems.
When utilising a mains online UPS
to provide backup power to a PoE
switch, it is often difficult to obtain a
reasonable standby time under
battery conditions when a mains
failure occurs, this is due to the
UPS having to back up all
connected PoE channels on the
switch. The POE-PSM-4 is a
simple device that allows the
installer to manually pre-select
‘non-critical’ PoE channels that
will be disconnected on a mains
failure. This provides a longer
standby time for the critical
channels or it can allow the
installer to ‘de-spec’ the UPS with
lower battery requirements,
saving costs.
Triggering
the device can be conducted
either by a volt-free contact (NO/NC), i.e. a relay
output from the UPS or by the removal of a low
voltage signal. Once power is restored all
channels are
automatically reinstated.
“The POE-PSM-4 is a truly unique device
offering the installer new options when designing
multi-channel PoE systems which require
sufficient backup times under standby conditions.
Also used within our new range of 150W POE-UPS-
SWITCH systems they can offer an all-in-one, costeffective
PoE power solution for today’s ever
growing PoE market”, states Jon East, Product
Development Manager at Elmdene.
THE BEST OF BRITISH
The strong commitment that Elmdene has to testing was
underlined by its decision to install and commission a large walkin
anechoic and EMC test chamber at its Portsmouth headquarters,
a step which dramatically extends the range of product testing that
it can now conduct on-site.
Having a chamber which prevents reflections of sound and
electromagnetic waves and is insulated from external sources
gives Elmdene an ideal environment to put the company's latest
product innovations through their paces before being brought to
market. The chamber allows the product development team to
confirm that new products satisfy stringent CE and other critical
requirements.
Although final outside testing by a third party is still required
for certification purposes, setting up the chamber underlines the
company's strategy to enhance the research, development and
testing facilities it has on site rather than relying on less flexible
external facilities.
Moving ahead, Elmdene believes that the chamber has the
potential to reduce considerably the time it takes to test new ideas
and introduce product lines, giving the company the edge over the
competition while ensuring the highest possible standards for
product reliability and operational performance.
FAST TRACKING DESIGN AND DELIVERY
iv
Such is the level of service
and support at Elmdene, the
company runs two customer
focused ‘fast track’ schemes,
one is for design and the
other for delivery.
The fast track approach
that Elmdene takes for the
OEM side of its business,
which is going from strength
to strength, is to start with a
standard product - which
could be anything from a
power supply to a siren - and
then work in concert with the
OEM to tailor these to satisfy
their own unique demands.
When the OEM customer
comes to Elmdene with a
request, the fast track team
at Elmdene works directly
with them and generally a
sample can be produced for
customer approval within one
to two weeks.
Once the sample is
approved then the next step
is to produce and deliver the
final order. Once in place as a
variant of the standard item,
the OEM customer can
simply order more of these
items through their chosen
distributor as and when required.
The setting up of the 'fast track' team has
enabled Elmdene to transform the way that OEM
requests for product changes are handled for the
better and that, as a result, everyone is now
reaping the rewards.
“For over 50 years Elmdene has developed
innovative products and solutions for its
customers across Europe. From our HQ in
Portsmouth we have launched a host of gamechanging
systems to many markets and led the
way in the way in how we support installers and
OEM companies.
“Fifty years on, nothing has changed in our
dedication to producing the best quality
electronic systems available, backed up by our
proven service infrastructure, and while we
understand that customers could choose to buy
cheaper equipment from unstable overseas
sources, we believe that what the industry
The UK-based 'fast track' team is able to sit
right at the heart of things, solely dedicated to the
OEM task. Industry knowledge is essential so the
team combines a mix of production and technical
support specialists who are geared up to take
requests and then run with them, making the
whole process more efficient and seamless than
ever before.
The second ‘fast track’ service from Elmdene
involves getting products out to customers when
they need them. Thanks to a nationwide
distribution network same-day delivery on high
volume stock orders placed before 4pm is a
reality.
“Our fast track schemes are customer-led
initiatives that allow us to meet the demands of
the buyers and specifiers of our products,”
explains Jon East, Product Development &
Marketing Manager at Elmdene. “Equipment is
held at consignment spots all over Europe so we
are geared up to provide an unrivalled service to
customers. This is why so many people come to us
for OEM and stock items.”
For security installers, the enhanced Elmdene
fast track services make nothing but good sense,
and for those seeking a genuine edge to their
security systems, they represent an obvious winwin
situation.
“We choose Elmdene products due
to the high quality and reliability
they offer, giving us piece of mind
for our installations. We regard
Elmdene as one of our most
trusted suppliers”
together raising standards
Meet the installer
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from
manufacturers?
Over the years Omega has developed a brilliant
network of distributors and suppliers. We have
found that by creating a focussed team around us
it helps in all aspects of our delivery, from being
able to access equipment quickly, to identification
of any problems we may encounter with nonconforming
products. We aim to swiftly rectify any
issues. Over time these colleagues have also
become firm friends, people we know and can rely
upon. We attend supplier days abroad in
Germany, Austria and Turkey; all staff are pleased
to attend these trips, especially to Austria where
skiing, sledging and Schnapps are often involved.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Definitely. Embedding strong accreditation within
the fabric of the company is paramount, not just a
hoop through which to jump. It supports our
overall delivery by standardisation and
benchmarking. We aim to accredit in technical,
health and safety, environmental and HR, five of
our major accreditors include National Security
Inspectorate (NSI) Gold, CHAS, Safe Contractor,
Constructionline, ISO and Investors In People. It is
always a problem that although we all know that
we should only need one SSIP different clients
insist on the accreditation they know and prefer,
so we have to hold three. We certainly value
Investors In People as it is a way to show our
clients and staff how much we value training.
What would be a typical project for you?
A typical project could be anything from a
standard eight camera install in a leisure centre
through to a remote monitored CCTV and Alarm
System in an industrial or retail space. Many of
our projects involve design and installation of
turnstiles and gates with access control
integrated with tertiary systems. We are not
currently involved with the domestic market and
around 95% of our work falls within the remit of
‘blue chip’ companies.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Usually, the requests that fall into this category
are the ones that revolve around speed and
asking for the impossible! The main issues we
deal with tend to be software related; we can dial
in remotely to many of our sites which can help in
terms of easing pressure on resources. However,
no matter how many phone calls we make to the
customer, engineers can still sometimes turn up
to site to find a computer switched off or a
programme not running correctly, which can
cause a lot of unneeded stress and lost time.
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry? Any trouble recruiting?
Most definitely. However, we invest heavily in
training and interview for potential. We have a
wonderful team and we know that the strength of
the company relies on the individual team
members. We always appoint apprentices and our
engineers take a pride in passing on their
knowledge to a new generation. It’s a give and
take situation; at first the apprentices rely heavily
on our staff and college for support, but by the
third year they have grown in confidence and
skills, have completed a number of theoretical
units and are keen to gain their final exams to be
a full part of the team. Our staff turnover is low
and long may that continue!
What is the security industry’s biggest
myth?
I’d say it’s that two tenders based on the same
price are of equal quality. Creating a situation in
which the customer is in command of all the facts
before they make a decision so that they can
make the best decision for their situation is such
a difficult feat to achieve.
What would make your job easier?
In an ideal world, with money being no object, a
helicopter to transport our engineers to call outs!
One of our biggest issues is traffic and the time it
takes us to get to our customers on site,
especially when something which should take a
day is taking much longer simply because the
majority of your time is taken up sitting in traffic.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
As other colleagues who have written this article
before, I too was born in 1966. The answer is ‘of
course!’
If you won £25,000 what do you think you
would you do with it?
I suppose it would be a balance between a
holiday for the family which wouldn’t have been
expected and some put away for the children and
grandchildren.
A great couple of days away for the staff and
all their families to say a thank you as without
them the Omega we have now would not be here.
BUSINESS
Partners and profits
Relationships are the key to success
in business and the security industry
is no different. Here we look at
building trust in the market
The security industry has never been a more
competitive sector than it is today. Rapid
innovations in technology are driving even
greater customer demands and expectations. As
these technologies evolve and companies invest
in connected home services, cloud solutions, and
the internet of things, traditional solutions are
being shaken up. What does this mean for
installers operating in these challenging
environments? How can they stay competitive and
relevant in this rapidly changing industry?
According to Daniel Wan, Channel Marketing
Manager at Honeywell Security Group, installers
should be looking to work more closely with
manufacturers.
“With customers demanding more value and
having a plethora of technologies to choose from,
installers and resellers need to do more to ensure
they stand out from the crowd,” says Daniel.
“Providing services above and beyond normal is
now essential to distinguish installers from the
competition.”
Customers expect their systems to work
flawlessly, no matter what they are designed to
do. Value, ease of use, and reliability are all
crucial concerns for the customer, and the
successful installer needs to be able to deliver on
all three. With the advent of cloud, and other
services which require constant interaction
between installer and customer, this is essential.
It prompts not only the initial sale, but also a long
term relationship with a customer that ensures
they come back time and time again.
But with so many brands and installers in the
market, it’s difficult for customers to know who to
choose in the first place. Increased exposure and
brand visibility helps companies to build trust
with customers, giving them peace of mind, which
can only be achieved through a strong marketing
presence.
Customers also want a full offering that is
interconnected and complex, which suits their
lifestyle requirements and delivers a holistic
service. However, this can be difficult for smaller
suppliers and installers that have a niche
portfolio.
“Installers are now looking to develop closer
ties with manufacturers in order to improve their
offerings for customers,” explains Daniel. “There
is a growing demand for partnerships like these in
the market, which delivers a number of clear
competitive advantages for installers and
dealers.”
Increasingly, installers are engaging with
manufacturers in closer and more structured
ways, such as dedicated partner programmes,
which allows installers to obtain the support
required to learn about and offer complex
solutions which work completely seamlessly.
“Working with a variety of different security
manufactures can often prove problematic, and
can create several issues during installation,
operation, management, and maintenance of
security systems,” says Daniel. “Despite
developments in industry standards, a common
proven method to successfully integrate systems
from several manufacturers, and deliver a reliable
and fault-free operation, has not yet been
established. For many installers, resellers and
service providers, working with a single trusted
manufacturer that provides a complete range of
products, solutions and support can minimise
these concerns.”
Another advantage of a close relationship is
cost. Installers and suppliers are looking to
increase revenues and reduce costs, while also
satisfying customers who are demanding more for
their money. Cooperation between installer and
manufacturer can result in volume discounts and
more for less, while certain manufacturers can
also include an annual sales rebate, where
partners can earn money back on the number of
products they purchase. Some programmes even
award rebates for projects that are specified with
solely the manufacturer’s products. This is a twoway
street, since the partnership results in
Nowadays with the
widespread domestic
and business use of
the Internet we have
IP as a common
platform that allows
different pieces of kit
from different
manufacturers to be
able to be connected
together
BUSINESS
“Customers have
grown to expect
excellent service and
support, and having
to wait for a response
will generally lower
the level of service in
their eyes”
(from previous page)
increased revenues for both manufacturer and
installer.
For installers, these are valuable incentives for
supplying more complex integrated security
systems. These financial rewards can then be
reinvested into expanding business services and
expertise, boosting the company’s rate of growth
and bottom line. Additionally, these savings can
then be passed on to customers, providing them
with the option to afford a more complex system
or keep the savings.
“Gone are the days where installers would
connect with customers once, through a single
transaction for one system,” says Daniel. “Now,
installers want to see recurring revenue through
regular interactions with their customers,
encouraging them to scale up their security
systems. A close relationship with a single
manufacturer provides a clear upgrade path and
easy updates for installers, ensuring they are kept
up to date with the latest trends and
technologies.”
Working closely with a manufacturer keeps
installers and resellers in constant contact with
those who designed and built the products.
Installers can often receive information from the
manufacturer in advance of the rest of the market,
giving them a head start to always offer the most
cutting edge solutions. Dedicated product
training sessions and webinars are also common,
and an excellent opportunity to understand a new
product or service, making it easier for partner
programme members to design the perfect
bespoke solution for each scenario. This
relationship works both ways. Members can also
influence the manufacturer’s development plans
by providing input based on their real world
experiences and feedback from their customers,
resulting in more relevant solutions and, in turn,
more sales.
A close relationship between manufacturer and
installer can also be beneficial for both
companies’ marketing. Participating in the
manufacturer’s existing marketing plans can help
provide support and materials for digital
promotions and events, as well as potential
access to marketing development funds (MDF)
that can support their own marketing activity.
Additionally, members can take advantage of
materials such as product and solution specific
datasheets and brochures that make it easy for
members to start selling new products and
services right away. This is an invaluable time and
money saver, especially for members who may
not have in-house marketing teams, and delivers
benefits on both sides.
“Customers have grown to expect excellent
service and support, and having to wait for a
response will generally lower the level of service
in their eyes,” reveals Daniel. “Partner
programmes can provide an essential ‘warranty
and care’ service, which ensures total satisfaction
for both installers and their customers. To ensure
easy communication, the best partner
programmes will look after members’ urgent
needs with a priority hotline that ensures queries
are solved promptly and with the best service
possible. In turn, this helps members provide a
better service to their customers, and build
customer loyalty.”
In a recent survey of Honeywell Channel
Partner programme members, 36 per cent of
respondents said that preferred access to tech
support was one of the greatest benefits of their
membership. Better support, rebates, and access
to more product and marketing information were
also highly rated.
“Since joining a dedicated partner
programme, we’ve seen a number of great
benefits,” said Richard Parnell, Managing Director
of Total Security Protection. “Access to preferred
tech support means we can provide the
exceptional service our customers now demand
and expect, whenever they ask for it.”
Given the competitive state of the market,
installers are looking more and more to build
strong relationships with manufacturers to remain
relevant and innovative. Working with a single
manufacturer can result in increased market
share, with higher customer retention and the
potential for longer relationships.
“Mutual growth for both installer and
manufacturer is a great benefit, but most of all, a
strong relationship between manufacturer,
installer and reseller will improve the quality of
solutions and services offered to the end
customer,” concludes Daniel Wan. “In today’s
crowded industry, this cooperation is a win-win
for all.”
INSIDE STORY
net10 from Paxton is
described as a
building intelligence
system offering
integrated
functionality out of
the box. We take a
closer look…
“We have deliberately
developed a hardware
platform upon which
we can continually
load more functions
and features. Our
challenge will be to
do this whilst
maintaining the
solution’s simplicity”
Simply intelligent
Integration is very much the technology
buzzword of the moment in the security
industry. We’ve heard about it for some time
but it is only recently that true integration
between building automation and security
systems has been a reality thanks to the use of
IP. Paxton has not let this trend pass it by with
the launch of net10 which, says the company,
delivers out of the box access control, IP video
management and building automation to
streamline the management of buildings.
The launch of net10 marks a new direction
for Paxton and comes in response to the
evolving landscape within the security industry.
This was made clear by research the company
carried out, asking 1400 of its Net2 access
control installers how many of them also fitted
IP cameras (around 50%) and then how many of
those integrated the video with access control.
It was revealed that only 1.6% of the installers
had integrated the two disciplines, despite the
obvious benefits for the customer. Paxton
decided that a single system for consolidated
functionality was what the market required.
Essentially, net10 works by connecting a
single server unit to a network and then adding
the controller and combination of connector,
readers and cameras to suit the application. No
software is required to be installed as the user
browses to the weblink on the unit.
Using conventional RFID tokens or Bluetooth
smart devices, the system offers tools for giving
specific permissions to individuals and groups
of people. It works in conjunction with all types
of IP cameras in order to facilitate live viewing
and the recording of video footage. It also
interfaces with existing building infrastructure
for a high level of control over lighting, heating,
air conditioning, intruder and fire alarms,
ensuring maximum efficiency and bolstering
cost and time savings.
Adam Stroud, CEO of the Paxton Group, says:
“The conventional way of providing a high level
of integrated functionality is to install separate
systems and 'stitch' them together. While this
approach is suitable for some projects, it is too
complex, specialised and expensive for many.
net10 is the first system to offer this level of
functionality in a single package that is practical
and cost-effective for all building types.”
Initially shown to the industry at IFSEC’15,
Paxton has since signed up 1300 participants
for training on the system. The company
believes that if installers can present a contract
proposal that offers building intelligence they
will triumph over security-only proposals.
PSI caught up with Adam to find out more
about the net10 system:
Was a building intelligence
solution a natural next step for
an access control company?
Access control is a fantastic foundation for
developing new technologies. The art of
identifying people, knowing where they are in a
building, and controlling permissions etc., is a
useful tool for the end user. Combine this with
Paxton’s focus on the mid-market (rather than
enterprise or domestic), and that makes it a
very logical step to take. Using our experience
with access control we can produce a building
intelligence solution that can cut down the
costs and complexity of installations.
How complicated is net10 to
install? Will installers need
special training?
I am absolutely sure that the majority of
installers would be able to install net10 without
any training whatsoever. We are however
insisting that installers carry out the training
programme so that we can present them with
the full capabilities of the system and ensure
they are aware of all of the capabilities of
building automation. The technology will mean
a diversification for some companies and we
want to help p them offer new ideas to their
customers and realise new growth areas.
How long did it take to develop
the system?
44
www.psimagazine.co.uk

We have been thinking about a new type of
system for a number of years... In November
2012 I came to the conclusion that we needed to
put together a team to work solely on net10 in
order to develop the system.
Is net10 a technology that will
always be evolving?
We have deliberately developed a hardware
platform upon which we can continually load
more functions and features. Our challenge will
be to do this whilst maintaining the solution’s
simplicity that is key to the technology. The
current roadmap (which runs to 2020) gives us
an order of what types of functionality we will
be tackling and when, but I am sure there will
be suggestions brought to us from installers
and users as they get more familiar with net10
and place more demands upon it.
In terms of market potential
would you say this is the biggest
launch yet for Paxton?
I think it is without doubt the biggest project we
have ever worked on. Net2 Entry was a big step
and two and a half years on we have over 10%
market share and we are not slowing down on
developing our established lines. By investing
our profits we can continue to bring products to
market that are more than just slightly improved
versions of what came before. net10 is our
biggest product launch and we have a robust
company growth plan for 2020, with
both Net2 and net10 as the drivers.
Video over IP network security
Introducing network
protection for video
over IP systems from
Veracity and Samsung
Techwin Europe
On a standard video
surveillance system,
having a secure or
encrypted link over
the coax alone does
not prevent intrusion
as the Ethernet link to
the camera would still
be open and
unsecured
With network cameras and domes
increasingly being utilised by companies
in order to capture images of activity,
there is the potential for would be fraudsters to
gain access to valuable and confidential data.
Although much can be done to secure and
isolate network connections with a fullymanaged
network switch, and even deploying
an entirely separate network, there are still
risks associated with these approaches.
These concerns are particularly relevant
where it might theoretically be possible to
disconnect an externally-mounted IP camera,
access the network through this connection,
and potentially detect and disable the other
cameras and/or the network video recorder
itself. If the surveillance network is bridged to,
or part of, the main network, it might even
potentially be possible for a well-prepared,
highly-skilled attacker to access or otherwise
disrupt other systems on that network.
What is the solution?
Manufactured by Veracity and available via
Samsung Techwin Europe, LINKLOCK provides a
barrier to all unauthorised network access by
blocking connections to any cable or equipment
that has been tampered with or disconnected. It
works by disconnecting data and power from
the coaxial cable link, providing isolation of the
affected link. This makes it an ideal protection
measure for security-critical installations, such
as at banks, where network cabling or video
surveillance equipment might be located
externally in order to detect, monitor and record
evidence of criminal activity including
vandalism, ATM skimming and armed robbery,
as well as to remotely monitor premises out of
business hours.
How does it work?
LINKLOCK, which is available as an option on
Veracity’s HIGHWIRE Powerstar range of
Ethernet and PoE over coax adaptors, can be
used with any IP camera.
On a standard video surveillance system,
having a secure or encrypted link over the coax
alone does not prevent intrusion as the Ethernet
link to the camera would still be open and
unsecured. The HIGHWIRE coaxial connection
uses a secure proprietary baseband protocol
which is point-to-point only. PoE over coax
powers the adaptor at the camera end and the
camera itself. However, any attempts to “tap
into” or disconnect the coax or network
connections is detected by the LINKLOCK base
unit which immediately disables PoE and data.
As result, all external equipment is immediately
and completely isolated from the internal LAN.
The LINKLOCK blocking mode cannot be
reversed through the external network or
coaxial interface. To return to normal operation,
the base unit inside the building must be
physically reset by a contact closure switch
across screw terminals on the unit itself.
This protection does not depend on the IP
camera being powered by PoE. If powered by a
local power supply, the IP camera will still
operate when the LINKLOCK blocking mode is
triggered, but there will be no communication
whatsoever through the coaxial cable. The
blocking mode will still work even if a camera is
externally powered by an attacker before they
attempt to tamper. This is because the Ethernet
signal or the HIGHWIRE coax signal must still
be physically re-connected or “tapped into” to
connect a third party (attacker) device. This will
be detected as normal and will trigger the
blocking mode. www.samsungsecurity.co.uk
OPINION
Are you integrating yet?
The current buzzword among manufacturers is integration. Those of you who have walked the
aisles of a trade show recently will attest to that, but is the technology demand a reality
across the market and why should security installers embrace the revolution?
The history books are full of technologies that
were developed by engineers in a lab or
workshop which were then trotted out by
salesman and marketing departments to try and
find a home for the solution. Many were genuinely
beneficial to the owner but somewhere along the
line the product just didn’t take off for one reason
or another. This is why today you hear the phrase
“we listened to our customers”. On one hand this
statement sounds like the company involved is
doing everyone a favour, but in general it means
that a) they got the first version wrong or b) they
don’t want to spend time and money on a system
that nobody will buy.
In the security industry we have been hearing
about the integration of technologies for some
time with building automation systems, including
security as a function, pitched as Tomorrow’s
World in the 70s, here at last. It sounded great for
a single unit on the wall to be able to control your
hot water, lift access, energy efficiency, security
etc but until recently all of these disparate parts
were running on different protocols, so it made
bringing them all together a bit of a mess.
Nowadays with the widespread domestic and
business use of the Internet we have IP as a
common platform that allows different pieces of
kit from different manufacturers to be able to be
connected together to make one all powerful,
integrated system. Couple that with the Internet
of Things, when almost any electronic item in the
house can potentially be connected online, and
massive smartphone/tablet ownership and users
have an unprecedented amount of control at their
fingertips.
What is interesting however is that at the
moment the integration of security systems
seems to be happening at a fairly low rate. We
had figures from access control company Paxton
released recently which showed that only a tiny
proportion of their installer base was actually
fitting technologies as one solution. The company
found that while half of their installers were
putting in video and access control, only a tiny
1.6% of that number was actually fitting the
technology with any degree of integration.
This is does not appear to be the case across
the whole industry, as while the integration of
security technology in the mid-sized market
appears to be a work in progress, at an enterprise
level it is buoyant. Combining video with barriers
at premises entry points and other perimeter
security applications for example is established.
Increasingly building automation systems that
involve lighting and environmental controls are
commonplace in larger organisations.
At a domestic level this kind of integration is
again split. Larger homes link to monitoring
stations that will likely use video verification as
well as other security measures to confirm an
incident while smaller single dwelling homes
might rely upon smartphone based technology or
single measures – or nothing at all. Multioccupancy
dwellings such as apartment blocks
use varying degrees of access control, but where
video is required with access it could be said that
a video entry system is the main choice. Having a
separate camera linked to access control seems
yet to be the preferred option.
So despite the obvious benefits of combining
video with access control why would this not be
the chosen route?
Initially of course the obvious answer is that
installers do not think that the process of
integrating technology is an easy one, and that is
understandable. If you are used to fitting one type
of system and another comes along that sounds
like it requires knowledge of IP addresses, routers
and comms you might be a little reluctant to take
it on. This is basically the original problem that IP
CCTV had in the early days.
On reflection this shouldn’t really be the case
Nowadays with the
widespread domestic
and business use of
the Internet we have
IP as a common
platform that allows
different pieces of kit
from different
manufacturers to be
able to be connected
together
OPINION
(from previous page)
as manufacturers know that they need to keep
new technology simple (remembering that
technology is meant to make our lives easier) and
if they do pack new solutions so full of
unnecessary features it can severely hamper sales
in the face of more straightforward plug and play
units. As a result, where there is any requirement
for installation knowledge manufacturers will run
training courses (usually for free) so that their
expensive developments can be specified and
fitted - otherwise all of that fancy R&D will have
been for nothing.
Secondly, does the installation really require
integrated technologies from two separate units?
If your customer wants video and access, will a
video access system do the job? This is the
obvious choice for an installer experienced in
fitting such systems to recommend over a job that
could involve wiring in two units etc.
Another reason why the take-up of integration
could be slower than the industry expected is that
Does the installation really require integrated technologies
from two separate units? If your customer wants video and
access, will a video access system do the job?
the end user isn’t specifying it. The benefits of
combining security disciplines are well
documented, so why is it that customers don’t
appear to be asking for integrated solutions? Do
they feel that the cost will be too much or that
they simply want say, CCTV, because their
insurance says they must have it and anything
extra is unnecessary cash? Or maybe customers
are asking for integration but the point about
installer reluctance is overriding the request.
It is difficult to place too much importance on
the findings of just the one report into integration,
but there does appear to be an area in the market
that integration is not yet hitting, and for
manufacturers and potentially for installers it
represents a big slice of contracts. Integration
offers a strong revenue stream for all sides in the
supply of security systems and it will no doubt be
the major push at trade shows and events for
some time yet as it is a market that is yet to
realise its full potential. Furthermore it is one that
is not limited only to security installers so there
will be stiff competition from other trades. In light
of this, perhaps security installers yet to embrace
the integration revolution should do so swiftly to
help protect their future business opportunities.
Detectors gain four European approvals
Vanderbilt has
announced that its
range of MAGIC dual
motion detectors has
been awarded four
European approvals.
The range has
gained approval in
line with the latest
editions of the
relevant French NF
standards, as well as
the TO-14 (INCERT)
standards that are
applicable in
Belgium and the Netherlands, the Italian IMQ and the German
VdS accreditation.
These approvals come one year after the MAGIC PDM-
IXx12/T and PDM-IXx18/T dual motion detectors were
launched in order to offer reliable detection of intruders and
high false alarm immunity. Their performance is based on an
improved version of Vanderbilt’s Matchtec algorithm, which
combines passive infrared (PIR) and microwave (MW)
channels to make accurate decisions on motion within a
detection zone. The detectors are suitable for both home and
commercial environments and perform well even under harsh
conditions, such as in rooms with rapid and extreme
temperature fluctuations that can create false alarms.
Connections
Hello Again,
In today’s cut and thrust of a competitive marketplace
where we see Company growth being achieved through
acquisition, it is often found that the acquirer rarely has
the correct infrastructure to support the businesses it
acquires.
Some remodel the business into their own, bringing
their own values and levels of service, which often bear
no resemblance to the business they have bought.
Indeed it is the personal levels of service and attention
to detail that have served the acquired Company well
over the years, so much so it has brought it to a point
where it became interesting acquisition.
Some acquire and leave the business running under its
well known local name, only introducing cost saving
benefits in the form of centralising business
administration functions, in essence leaving the business
running as a successful sales branch with it’s own
identity.
The old adage that “big isn’t necessarily beautiful” has
been recognised by many global enterprises who look to
maximise on their acquisitions revenues whilst
minimising the attrition, by continuing to support and
invest in the brand name they have bought.
However, some brand names are so big that they think
their brand should hold them in good stead for
marketing and promotional activity aimed at cutting
prices and undermining the traditional suppliers in the
marketplace.
The UK security industry fortunately appreciates that
much business is done at personal levels, between real
people who care about one another’s businesses. These
are companies who trade together because there is
more to it than just price; it comes down to levels of
service and relationships. They know that anyone can do
something for nothing, but just not for very long!
That is why we take the time to get to know your
business and the people in it. We are different from the
other ARC’s & RVRC’s out there and the way we do
business is explained our website www.smon.co.uk. The
website itself is also very different from rest of our
competitors offerings as well.
So if you’re not sure whether you’re getting a good deal
or you think your ARC is charging you too much for the
service levels they provide, give us a call. We would be
delighted to explain our long established customer
services and business development campaigns!
Look forward to getting to know you……………..
London City Airport opens new
simulation training room
London City Airport has recently opened a new simulation
training room, mirroring its fire system which features panels
from Advanced.
Servicing over 3.6 million passengers annually, the airport has
ten operating airlines that travel to over 45 destinations. The
complex is already protected by Advanced MxPro panels and the
new training room will allow staff to learn their use and explore
various scenarios in a controlled and isolated environment.
The training room incorporates a two-loop MxPro 4 panel and
graphic package that will allow the staff to receive necessary
training in the use of the airport systems.
Robin Kemp, Advanced’s sales manager for the south east
region, commented: “With Advanced panels already installed in
London City Airport, the addition of the training room and the
MxPro 4 panel for training purposes allows staff at the airport to
be trained in the latest aspects of fire safety. In a 24-hour facility,
it’s hard to do training using the main system, so this means that
all types of incident can be mocked up without inconveniencing
passengers.”
Detection system busts
London congestion
Ipsotek has developed a new technology in
partnership with Transport for London (TfL) which
is helping to keep traffic flowing through one of
Europe’s busiest cities.
As one of a range of measures that is helping to
smooth traffic flow in the capital, Ipsotek has
worked with TfL to develop new CCTV analytic
technology that can automatically detect traffic
build-up and alert traffic operators to quickly
implement congestion-relieving procedures.
Ipsotek developed the Image Recognition and
Incident Detection (IRID) system, making use of
their own video analytics technology. The
technology constantly analyses each video stream
from existing CCTV traffic monitoring cameras and
uses pre-configured ‘congestion definitions’ to
alert operators at TfL’s London Traffic Control
Centre (LTCC) when a build-up of vehicles
threatens to develop into a problematic
congestion situation.
London’s LTCC aims to reduce congestion,
carrying out ‘real-time’ traffic management while
at the same time providing up-to-date traffic
information to the media and other interested
stakeholders, including other highway authorities
in London.
The Ipsotek IRID system works by monitoring
each camera feed, ignoring ‘background’ image
details, which are of no interest to traffic
coordinators, such as trees and lamp columns. The
remaining ‘foreground’ objects, namely vehicles,
are analysed for behaviour. Many algorithms can
be used, but for the IRID system, stationary or
slow vehicles are the primary concern. Once the
system detects a build-up of stationary or slow
vehicles, a desktop alert is sent to traffic
coordinators prompting them to address the
situation with a number of appropriate actions.
Before the introduction of IRID, LTCC traffic
operators had to manually trawl through more
than 1,200 CCTV cameras, painstakingly looking
for congestion issues across the capital’s road
network. Because of this, traffic situations were
often not spotted until they became severe
congestion incidents – with the obvious severe
delay on traffic movements across the capital.
Once a problem is automatically detected by
the IRID system, TfL’s traffic operators are able to
implement traffic signal timing plans to clear any
impending congestion. Traffic signals can be
coordinated to keep traffic away from an area, or
help to move the flow of vehicles around an
incident safely. “Traffic congestion can develop
very quickly, from a small jam to a lengthy tailback,
in just a few minutes,” says Bill Flind, Chief
Executive, Ipsotek. “That’s why fast detection and
an effective response to these situations is vital.”
Ipsotek and TfL have been researching and
working on the development of this technology for
more than five years, producing a viable tool that
could also be used by other highways authorities
across the country. To date, TfL has invested
£180,000 in trials, training, and the deployment of
the system to the existing 20 cameras that make
up the pilot scheme. With a planned expansion to
the scheme, this technology will continue to
benefit London’s road users, and will see the
development by TfL spread to benefit other cities
across the UK.
internationals. The
new hotel boasts a
luxury spa, Beefy’s
fine dining
restaurant, the
Lakeview sports bar,
extensive meeting
and event space
along with a gym and
18-hole golf course.
Fire protection for guests and staff is now
being provided by two Notifier ID3000 panels,
networked to 633 SMART2 combined smoke and
heat detectors in the bedrooms and corridors. A
total of 11 FAAST LT units have been deployed to
provide aspirating smoke detection in the voids of
the five lift shafts. Heat detection has been used
in the extensive kitchens and 129 optical detectors
provide coverage in the risers.
When cricket matches are in progress,
monitoring of the fire system is transferred to the
Ageas Bowl control centre. At all other times, the
network is monitored from the hotel’s own
security room in the reception area.
One of the distinctive features of the hotel,
supported by Honeywell voice alarm and public
address technology, is that cricket commentary
can be relayed to any of the 14 zones, which
include more than 670 speakers.
The coverage provided by Crane
Communications also includes measures to meet
the safety requirements of hearing or visuallyimpaired
guests through a paging system and
disabled refuge with Emergency Voice
Communication System supplied by Notifier. A
separate paging system has also been provided to
alert staff to any alarms.
New Debenhams store kitted
out with open protocol system
PEL Services has announced it has completed the
design, supply and installation of a package of
key safety systems for another Debenhams store.
As with other Debenhams stores around the UK,
the new store in North Lincolnshire Shopping
Park, Scunthorpe has been fitted with fire
detection, security and public address (PA) and
music systems by PEL Services.
The new store, which occupies 40,000 sq ft
across two floors, is protected by a store-wide
‘open protocol’ fire detection system and PEL’s
Refuge Call, which allows a disabled person to
alert the central station to their predicament,
enabling appropriate action to be taken.
A PA system, which is used for safety and
general announcements and to broadcast in store
radio and advertisements under a company-wide
MEDIAinSTORE contract, has also been fitted by
PEL.
As with any store, security was a key
consideration and PEL has installed access
control, intruder alarm and video door entry
systems as part of the overall store security
requirements.
Matalan distribution centre has
all the right signs for safety
With the installation of a new six-storey hanging
garment racking system at its Corby distribution
centre, Matalan called on Tyco Fire and Integrated
Solutions to advise on the fire extinguisher and
signage strategy.
A revamp of the distribution centre has seen
the old multi-storage facility, complete with
mechanical crane, given over to a hanging
garment despatch system over six storeys, made
possible by the addition of five mezzanine
floors in the existing warehouse. With
racks of clothing making the usual high
level fire safety signage unsuitable, Tyco
Fire and Integrated Solutions (TFIS) was
called in to deliver an effective solution.
“We opted for high-quality
photoluminescent signs on the floor,”
says Nick Scrafton, service sales
consultant at TFIS. “These are AAA rated,
giving a high light output of 25 lux and
are very durable. They come with a twoyear
manufacturer’s guarantee but I
expect they will be good for at least five
years.”
TFIS also developed a location strategy
for the 120 fire extinguishers installed in
the refurbishment of the centre. “You
can’t just place these around the edge of
the warehouse because of the mezzanine
floors,” points out Nick Scrafton. “We’ve
deliberated where they should go,
looking at all locations, and came up with
a back board system for mounting the
extinguishers, with the boards painted
red to make them highly visible and
numbered.”
Trespass warning for railway
network tested
Trespass incidents on the railway network cost
millions of pounds every year. Panasonic has
teamed up with Alan Dick Communications to
provide a trespass warning system for the
railway network to help prevent incidents at
known hot spots.
Using Panasonic’s vandal proof dome
camera technology in combination with a
thermal camera, AD Comms predicts that they
can drastically reduce the number of false
alerts that such systems can produce.
Steve Harris, Strategy Director at AD
Comms commented: “The industry has been
struggling with problems with this kind of
analytics platforms in the past due to cameras,
analytics software and network recorders not
communicating effectively. We’ve been actively
seeking the right technology partner to test in
a real rail environment with a view to
delivering industry leading technology to help
Rail Operators solve this significant problem.
“For the last two months, we have been
testing the Panasonic cameras in conjunction
with Ipsotek’s analytics product VISuite. We
are delighted by the stability of the system and
we are planning to implement a live trial next
month.”
The new system uses fixed visual cameras
as well as thermal cameras in combination
with VISuite’s virtual zone intrusion detection
and loitering recognition, to create an accurate
picture of an individual’s behaviour. Station
platforms are zoned, so that anyone entering
several virtual zones triggers a Pan Tilt and
Zoom camera which tracks subsequent
movements.
It will also provide an automated audible
warning to those meeting behaviour patterns
associated with trespassing. In addition, alerts
are raised so that station staff can take
appropriate action.
Andrew Dicken, Head of Panasonic Europe
Solution Centre said: “We have come together
with the AD Comms team who share a common
passion to drive engineering innovation in to
the transportation sector.”
Underground car park made
more secure in London
Interphone has completed an access control and
roller shutter solution for Riverside West Car Park
in Wandsworth, South West London. The
installation is designed to enhance safety and
protection for the underground car park
customers and their belongings, with plans to
extend the project into other areas of the site
moving forward and incorporate a new CCTV
system.
The solution was implemented in two phases,
including all pre-wiring and installation
requirements in order to upgrade existing security
features. The roller shutter replaces an aging door
that no longer provided the necessary usability
and protection having been in operation for a
number of years, while the traditional lock and
key access to the car park bicycle cages has been
updated to a fob-based access control system.
The roller shutter has been installed at the top
of a ramp leading down into the basement, to
provide added peace of mind to customers whose
cars are located in this area that only authorised
people can gain access. Similarly, the access
control system, fitted on the outside of two bicycle
cages, will better manage who is able to enter
these restricted areas and at the same time
streamline the processes involved in granting
permission. Historically, with the traditional lock
and key access, it had proved difficult to monitor
who went in and out of the cages at any given
time.
In fact, the control system will save time and
reduce hassle to both customers and the onsite
car park attendant. With the previous system,
customers were required to visit the car park
management office to sign for a key to the
appropriate cage and then return it once they had
retrieved. This not only wasted their time, but also
meant the attendant always needed to be
available and within close proximity to the office.
With the new system, key fobs will be issued to
authorised individuals, providing simple and
instant access to cages, while enabling the
attendant to be away from the office to patrol the
site and free up time to better assist customers.
Meanwhile, the car park operator will now have
complete visibility of all movements in and out of
restricted areas with electronically-captured data
from the key fob.
Katie Finnamore, Director of Riverside West Car
Park commented: “The best aspect of the solution
is the added control and protection we can
achieve. We believe it has made the car park to be
more safe and secure, enabling us to effectively
manage access to certain areas as well as being
able to restrict access should we need to.”
The Archive of Serbia is protected from fire
Opened in 1900, the Archive of Serbia is the country’s national archive,
located in Belgrade. The current building was dedicated in 1928 to house and
protect documents and other materials produced by state bodies and
organisations of Serbia before 1918, as well as documents produced during
and after World War II.
Although the National Archive was heavily damaged during World War II,
the archives still hold a large amount of information dating back to early
medieval times – over ten kilometres of historical records in 972 archives and
51 collections.
When called in to design, install and commission a new fire protection
system for the Archive of Serbia, TVI specified Apollo’s XP95 optical smoke
detectors and XP95 heat detectors.
Vladimir Zrnić from TVI said: “Designing a fire detection system for the
archive was challenging and interesting at the same time. We knew that the
air would not be completely clear and that rising temperatures had to be
detected extremely early to avoid fire spreading rapidly as it would in a room
filled with very old, and therefore very dry, paper.
“The XP95 heat detector monitors temperature by using a single
thermistor which provides a count output proportional to the external air
temperature. The standard heat detector will report an alarm at a
temperature as low as 55 degrees Celsius, whereas the XP95 optical smoke
detector works using the light scatter principle and is ideal for applications
where slow-burning or smouldering fires are likely. Both are ideally suited for
this project.”
Overall, more than 80 devices were installed covering ten software zones
in the four-storey building. Fire suppression systems cover three floors of the
four-storey building with an overall floor space of 5000sq/m.
OFF THE WALL
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
Werewolf? There
wolf....
A possible hybrid
werewolf has been
captured by CCTV in a
city near Mato Grosso
do Sul in Brazil. The
mystery creature, which
was snapped by police
cameras was released by a city official and has been
scrutinized by several forensic photography
experts who state that the bizarre image is
indeed authentic and is not the work of
hoaxers. Could be just some bloke running on
blades though....
www.youtube.com/watch?v=F25XcqfGrsE
That sinking feeling
Sink hole footage continues
to surface with the latest
showing five people standing
at a bus stop in Harbin in
China as the ground opens
up underneath them to
swallow them up. One lucky
person manages to grab onto
a pipeline to save herself from injury. No one
was reported harmed in the collapse.
Clip of expensive trip
CCTV recently
captured a
Taiwanese boy
tripping fist-first
into a £1million
painting at an art
gallery in Taipei.
The 12-year-old
stumbled over
the rope barrier
separating
visitors from the 17th-century oil painting, and as he is
catching his balance, he ends up punching a hole in the
canvas. The artwork, by Italian painter Paolo Porpora, has
been valued at over NT$50 million (£1million). The incident
took place at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park ,during an
exhibition called ‘The Face of Leonardo, Images
of a Genius’. The oil work suffered a tear in the
canvas and will be restored in Taiwan before
being returned.
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the
fight against crime, however once in a while it
captures the public doing something that is
perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a
real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at
CCTV clips from around the world…
Robber caught by
shop owner
This footage shows the
moment a shopper
allegedly attempts to
steal a tablet computer
in Leigh. The incident
took place at computer
and laptop store
Advanced UK in July. Three people – one man and two women
– entered the store and the man asked the
shopkeeper for his mobile phone to be
unlocked. CCTV shows the woman hiding the
tablet under her jacket but she is seen by the
shop keeper and asked to put it back. Officers
say the sting was ‘brazen’ and ‘well-rehearsed’
and involved all three people who were captured on the
security camera. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRIgPFLD5d0
Not the right kind of key for a supercar
We couldn’t really let this one go by without featuring it as
the images hit just about every news outlet in the country.
Dashcam footage from a car in a shop car park in Hackney
this summer clearly shows a man deliberately
‘keying’ a parked Aston Martin car causing
around £9000 worth of damage. The video
quickly led to an arrest and the man is facing
charges of criminal damage.
