EDITORIAL
Changing needs
Two items in this edition of PSI show how
CCTV is meeting the changing needs of the
modern world and thus indicate how much we
could be relying on cameras in the future for
more varied jobs than ever
We’ve reported many times how surveillance cameras can
be used to monitor much more than security but the
definition of security is changing all of the time
especially as there will always be those who are looking for new
ways to easy personal gain at the loss of others.
For example in Panel this month we discuss the use of
cameras in care homes, not just to keep the premises and
residents secure, but to monitor the behaviour of staff - not
something that the cameras would have been installed for. The
initial use was probably to make sure there were no uninvited
guests or to keep an eye on residents in case of a fall or distress.
Today however we have seen a plethora of cases where carers
have been mistreating residents – a particularly ugly state of
affairs as some of the elderly or disabled have not been able to
defend themselves or even report the incident. Given the cost of
care (it is estimated that it costs in excess of £45bn) and the fact
that the average age of the population is rising, the care of the
vulnerable is a growing market and one that is changing.
Technologies such as personal alerts and call points are
essentials in the business but surveillance cameras can play an
increasingly key role in the protection of residents from all types
of potential threat; how that threat is monitored is the subject of
the Panel feature.
The other case in point concerns the rise in the attempts to get
something for free, a phenomenon that appears to take the
opinion that restaurants, bars and hotels are fair game for anyone
who can try and claim some kind of injury through no genuine
fault of the establishment (a bit like the fake tummy bug stories
from package holidays). Highlighted in Off the Wall, a section of
the magazine that usually exposes the daft behaviour of people
captured on camera and shared online for our entertainment, the
footage clearly shows a diner put something into her mouth
before faking a choking episode. As the owner of the pub says: “If
it hadn’t been for the cameras, she would have got away with it”
and would likely have cost the business dear. Again this shows
how surveillance cameras can aid with more than just security and
is another step on from the time when camera footage was used
to debunk fake injury scams on public transport.
These two cases are the polar opposite; one concerns genuine
mistreatment while the other is faked, yet both are being
addressed with surveillance technology originally fitted with
other applications in mind.
INDUSTRY NEWS
In brief
Remote monitoring company
Co-Founder & Chief
Executive Officer,
recognising all those who
have helped along the way
saying: “Thank you to all our
fantastic clients, installation
partners and suppliers for
their loyalty, support and
much valued business
relationships. We could not
ask for better individuals
and companies to share our
journey with.”
UK fire & security software
provider is acquired
Norway’s Asolvi (formerly known as Evatic
Group) has acquired Hull-based PC Data, an
independent supplier of service management
software for the fire and security systems
industry. It is the architect of the Alarm Master
solution and has more than 600 customers
nationwide. Together Asolvi and PC Data will
have more than 1,500 customers across 30+
countries.
“This is a logical step for us following our
other acquisitions in the UK within the field
service management space,” says Pål M.
Rødseth, CEO of Asolvi. “The team at PC Data
JM Security Systems celebrates
apprentice success
A Birmingham-based
security systems
company is
celebrating after the
first one among its
apprentices
completed all of his
assessments with
flying colours in 18
months. Chris
Staunton, aged 20, started working at JM
Security Systems in April this year after
spending 18 months at another firm.
After being fast-tracked through his training
have served the UK fire and security sector for
many years. Following discussions with Ken
Symmonds and Philip Jackson of PC Data, we all
agreed that we can create better, stronger
products and secure the existing customer base
by joining forces. Asolvi has a good number of
customers in this vertical already, but now PC
Data brings a pool of industry specialists to the
table. This will help us deepen our expertise in
fire safety and security.”
PC Data’s Ken Symmonds and Philip Jackson
added: “We believe that being part of a larger
software group will add strength to the product
development that is needed in such a highstakes
market. We have also got to know Asolvi
as a competent and dedicated company in the
service management space and are confident
that bringing the companies together will
benefit our customers in the future.”
Speaking to PSI, Pål M. Rødseth said: “PC
Data brings even more industry specialists to
the table which will undoubtedly help us
deepen our expertise in fire safety and security
systems, and become the Europe’s top provider
of field service management software for this
vertical.
“We cannot guarantee that nothing will
change, however we are making this acquisition
because we want to grow in the alarm and
security sector. The customers should expect us
to further invest in products and improve the
services in the future.”
by Skills for Security, Chris has now completed
his Level 3 Fire, Emergency Systems and
Security apprenticeship, attaining distinctions
in two out of three modules.
It means that Chris is well on his way to
being a fully qualified engineer and could also
be presented with his own JM Security
Systems work van in the autumn.
Mary Vadaie, business development
manager, said: “We are really pleased that
Chris has done so well in his assessments in
half the usual time. After completing this first
step on the career ladder, he has a bright
future ahead of him in the security systems
sector. We’re looking forward to helping him
progress.”
TDSi agrees to Vitaprotech Group
acquisition
TDSi has announced that it has agreed to be
acquired by Vitaprotech Group. The acquisition
continues Vitaprotech’s growth strategy which
has included several acquisitions in the market
footage and automated video surveillance
system health checks are offered as recurring
services.
Steve Proctor, Director of Sales Security at
Mayflex commented, “The Xanview solution is
a great addition to the Mayflex security
product portfolio. It will not only provide our
installation partners with access to an exciting
new product line but will also create
opportunities for them to generate recurring
revenue streams.”
The UKs fastest growing

security distributor
Two-thirds of companies never test security
Almost two-thirds (63%) of UK companies have admitted to
never testing their physical security according to Setting the
Standard for Security, a report from Jacksons Fencing.
Given that 22% of companies say that the consequences of
a breach are severe, including public disruption or even loss of
life, these findings are cause for concern.
Less than half of survey respondents had heard of key
security certifications, including LPCB’s LPS 1175 (45%) and
SBD (42%), and only 38% ever consult security experts.
Worryingly this suggests many are unaware their solutions
may not be fit for purpose or what criteria they should be
looking for.
Third party certification bodies such as the LPCB and police
initiative Secured by Design help to provide specifiers with
independently tested security products that will offer an
appropriate level of protection against forced entry depending
on a site’s needs. Recently the LPCB introduced LPS 1175:
Issue 8, a new performance classification system that provides
an even deeper and adaptive approach that identifies and
tackles the increasingly diverse methods and attack tools
used by hostile actors.
The introduction of LPS 1175: Issue 8 fits with the priorities
of those specifying security solutions. In Jacksons’ recent
study, they reported the most important factor during
commissioning was ‘tested and proven effectiveness’ (89%).
This shows that there is the desire to implement security
solutions but there might not be sufficient openly available
information to do so. In fact, one fifth (19%) listed a lack of
technical information as a main challenge.
Simon Folwell, Security Consultant at Jacksons Fencing,
comments: “We understand the daunting task facing those
within the security buying chain who might not have a
formal security background. It is a complex matter,
demanding a thorough understanding to successfully
navigate its challenges, as the security landscape is
constantly evolving.
“However it is worrying that there seems to be a distinct
lack of motivation from some companies to take the initiative
to properly secure their premises. Thankfully Issue 8 should
deliver a greater depth of understanding for those specifying
security solutions, a much needed addition to LPCB’s stringent
certification process.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Stephen Adams,
Chief Executive of BAFE.
BAFE is the independent
register of quality fire safety service
providers.
How has the competency of fire alarm engineers changed based on
the Hackitt report?
BAFE registered providers continue to represent the highest levels of
competency, having done so long before the Hackitt report. To answer your
question however, nothing has changed on BAFE’s front, although we do
regularly analyse all our schemes to ensure they remain the best
representation of competency. With all schemes, changes do happen,
especially when there are changes to British Standards, but none have
occurred solely based on the Hackitt report. We will continue to monitor this,
as BAFE is involved in several working groups set up after the report.
Jonathan O’Neill OBE, FPA Managing Director, recently stated at the NSI
Summit that UKAS Accredited Third Party Certification is a “no brainer”. “To
me, Third Party Certification is the easiest and simplest way for a specifier or
end user to have the assurance they require that the chosen supplier is fit
for purpose or competent… the mandatory use of third-party accredited
products and services for fire protection should be a given.” We at BAFE
completely agree with this statement and with well respected bodies such as
the FSF, FPA, FIA and IFEDA supporting third-party certification, it is getting
far more difficult to refute.
How has BAFE’s wider role in the industry changed over the past few
years?
Over the last ten years, BAFE has evolved into the important role of
monitoring competency of installers and maintainers of multiple services
within the fire safety arena. Manufacturing standards are no longer in our
remit, although our schemes always specify the use of third-party
certificated products. Installation and services were not regulated to a point
where an end-user could find competent providers to undertake their
requirements. This is where BAFE stepped up and has reviewed existing
schemes – and established new ones – to best validate an organisation’s
competency to deliver these works. We now have over 1,600 registrations to
our schemes, a fivefold increase over the last 10 years. We are incredibly
proud of where we have managed to establish BAFE within the industry and
will strive to continue this development. We regularly promote the
importance of UKAS accredited, third-party certification to as wide an
audience as possible. Educating end users of this is paramount to BAFE’s
ongoing progress.
Where do Fire regulations stop and building regulations start?
This is an interesting question, as the answer should be that they crossover
100%. However, recent events have shown us that this is not the case and
competency in the fire safety realm is a key word arising from the Hackitt
report and consequently the groups created from this. Fire Regulations are
an integral part of the built environment and cannot be overlooked either for
new build or during the life of a building – we can never forget that we are
always considering life safety.
A pure risk assessment is a report of the state of the building at that
moment in time. The report doesn’t remove the risk of fire, but all
subsequent actions by the responsible person mitigate this risk. Stronger
links between the building process and the ongoing fire safety, combined
with a higher level of competency must be demanded to help develop a
safer UK. This is what Dame Judith called the ‘Golden Thread’ of information
and fire safety cannot be ignored by any of the participants in the life of a
building.
YOU SAID IT!
for user management
and installer setup
The i-on Compact Security System is a
wireless “entry-level intruder alarm” system
and can be purchased as a kit as reviewed
here and with a range of optional additional
detector and sensor devices available. The panel
handles up to 20 zones / devices with flexible
configuration and a wide range of detection
options.
Getting started
All necessary components for a basic grade 2
alarm system are included in the pack. The
control unit includes the keypad and a two-line
LCD display for user management and installer
setup. Firstly, the control unit must be fixed in
place and supplied with mains power using twocore
cable from a suitable spur. With a single
screw at the top of the panel, the front folds down
giving access to the PCB and all connections. The
back-up battery pack must be slotted into place
and plugged into the main PCB.
PIR detectors are supplied with batteries (2 x
AA size) installed with a removeable tab to
prevent drain during transit and once removed
they become active and are ready to be added to
the system. This is simply a matter of activating
the tamper switch of each device once the control
panel is in Add Detector/Device mode. The
devices are then added in turn until all are
entered.
Each device is allocated to one of the twenty
zones the panel supports and can be
appropriately named, allocated a “type” and have
its attributes set. The “type” for each device can
be Normal, Entry Route, Final Exit, 24 Hour Alarm,
Menu options
A conventional alarm menu approach is taken
using the LCD display for navigation through the
options. The control unit Quick Setup Guide
includes an Installer Menu Map that identifies all
available functions.
Access to the panel is by entering the four-digit
Installer PIN followed by the four-digit User Pin
number, a cursor navigation pad along with tick,
cross and menu buttons are then used to work
through the options.
If network connected the control panel’s
webserver can be accessed and this gives much
easier access to all the panel’s features and
settings. DHCP is enabled by default or a fixed IP
address can be entered via the panel. Modern
browsers will likely state that “This site is not
secure” or show certificate errors so these must
TEST
A very capable grade
2 wireless alarm
system with a very
good range of
configuration options
and relative simplicity
of installation
(continued from p12)
devices such as the Fob and Hold Up alarms, if
used.
Virtual Keyboard – presents an on-screen version
of the panel’s user controls and display.
Hardware
Control Panel – the mains input is from 85 to 250v
AC at 50-60Hz. Current demand is stated as 150 –
60mA over this voltage range. The panel uses
physical buttons with reasonable travel rather
than membrane style pad. An audible click is
provided, and the level can be adjusted from 1 to
10 or silenced to suit the user. The approximately
16 x 24cm panel with a depth of 4cm has
reasonable space for the necessary cables but the
RJ45 network connector is close to the lower edge
so some pre-made leads may be a tight-fit.
There is no manufacturer detail or logo on the
panel and the “i-on Compact” title on the top line
of the display can be customised making the
panel very easy for installation companies to
custom brand.
On the main PCB a 24-way connector allows
the fitting of an optional plug-in module for PSTN
or GSM communication. These allow alarm
reporting and SMS messaging. If fitted, the panel
can be Set & Unset using SMS messaging
commands.
A micro-SD card slot on the main PCB accepts
memory cards that can be used to store
compatible camera images or to load firmware
updates.
The panel wireless range is stated as 500
metres, but actual range will be reduced by
building structures and any potential interference
sources.
PIR detectors – these “pet tolerant” (up to 25kg)
detectors are stated to have an approximate
three-year expected running time from their 2 x
AA batteries and a range of 9 metres by 90°. A
standard PIR is also available with a 12 metre by
90° range.
Door contact – the door contact is also stated as a
three-year battery life though this device is fed by
a CR2 battery. This has a maximum magnet
separation of 10mm; spacers are provided to
allow the detector or magnet to be suitably
positioned.
Fob – the fob is powered by a CR2450 battery and
has 4 buttons signified by a Lock to Set the
system, an Open Lock for Unset, a Question mark
for querying the alarm state and a Star to Part Set
the system. Feedback is provided by red and
green LED illumination. The buttons need to be
firmly held for a short time before they work, but
this should prevent false activations. The Fob can
also be programmed to act as a Hold Up alarm
device if the Set and Star are pushed together.
External Sounder – this IP65 rated enclosure
includes two battery packs at the top of the unit.
Battery life is given as approximately 2 years. The
siren is specified as 100dB(A) and in test
measured 105dB(A) at 1 metre. The unit has 2 red
LEDs that flash in a slow sequence to show the
sounder is operational and when in alarm 2 bright
white LEDs flash at around 1Hz in addition to the
siren.
Jumpers are provided on the PCB to select i)
Confirmation LED illumination on system set, ii)
wireless jamming detection monitoring, iii)
sounder tone change and iv) sounder cut-off
period (5 seconds, 3 or 15 minutes).
A small spirit-level is set into the housing to
help align the unit horizontally when fitting.
Performance
Once set up, the system is simple for the user to
operate with conventional keypad setting and unsetting.
The A to D keys can be configured for
partial setting if required. In addition to the Fob
the panel can support optional Proximity Tag
setting through its front panel reader.
An Eaton SecureConnect app is available for
Android or iOS and this gives users the ability to
remotely Set / Unset alarms and to receive alarm
notifications. A SecureConnect web portal allows
installers to manage multiple sites / panels.
Details for ARC connections are included in the
installation sheets.
Documentation is generally of a good standard
but can be confusing as in a number of cases the
installation sheets refer you to the “Engineering
Guide for guidance” and there appears to be no
such named document for the i-on Compact
Control Unit or the kit, either supplied or via the
website.
The supplied information is certainly sufficient
to get the system up and running but more
comprehensive information would be helpful.
General information is supplied through the
website though it is necessary to register your
details for access.
Conclusion
A very capable grade 2 wireless alarm system
with a very good range of configuration options
and relative simplicity of installation.
New extinguishing range with
event log feature
The Sigma ZXT from Kentec provides controls and
indications for a single-area extinguishing release
system, enabling targeted extinguishing that limits
damage and reduces costs. Three conventional
detection zones provide the alarm ‘trigger’ required
to activate the release of extinguishant, and the
system can be configured to release the
extinguishant on an alarm from any single zone or
combination of multiple zones.
A new feature on the Sigma ZXT is the event log
which records event data from the panel such as
alarms, faults, configuration changes etc. along
with a time and date stamp. This historical visibility
is critical for diagnostics, identifying the cause of
alarms and faults, as well as reasons for activations.
Up to 1000 events can be stored within the panel
which can be viewed through the LCD or can be
downloaded and saved using Kentec’s LE2
software.
The system, compliant with EN12094-1, can also
be configured to provide two extinguishing outputs,
either working
together as
common
outputs or as
main and
reserved
outputs.
30 metre outdoor reflective beam sensor announced
The PR-30BE from Takex is a 30-metre reflective beam sensor with Time of Flight monitoring
which can determine detecting distance by measuring both light reception level and timing,
meaning no lost alarms from highly reflective objects such as white vehicles.
The PR-30BE can be used where conventional beams that require power at both ends are
impractical due to either installation cost or environmental concerns, such as across
waterways, roads, and runways; providing the performance of a traditional point-to-point
beam sensor with the single-ended convenience of a PIR detector.
Sized like a twin beam but with several features carried over from the PB-IN and PXB quad
series, the PR-30BE includes environmental monitoring which dynamically optimises
performance to match changing conditions with a dedicated output giving a pre-alarm warning
if required. Also included is an audible alignment tone function which together with the dualring
viewfinder and monitor output voltage options, ensure easy beam
alignment.
The PR-30BE also includes response time adjustment, +/-90 degrees
horizontal and +/-5 degrees vertical adjustment, and a newly redesigned
reflector assembly for a minimum operational distance of just 0.5m.
INTERVIEW
Integrating with the UK
“In the UK, people are
really serious about
security; people know
how to use it and you
have a wellestablished
installer
and monitoring
community”
This month we talk to Aleksandr
Konotopskyi from Ajax Systems
about the company and why he
sees the UK as a market ready for
another intrusion system
In the early months of 2019 you probably
hadn’t heard much of Ajax Systems. The
Ukrainian company had been doing well
selling connected systems in Europe seeing
sales multiply 80 times since 2015, but still
wanted to expand its business farther afield.
Following a $10million investment from U.S.
private-equity firm Horizon Capital in March the
founder and CEO Aleksandr Konotopskyi was
able to set his sights on bringing the technology
the UK.
In the June edition of PSI we reviewed the
wireless alarm system and its peripherals and it
did very well in the test. The system also had
success at the Security & Fire Excellence Awards
in 2017 and has made the finals in the PSI Premier
Awards for 2019. It was a good timing therefore to
catch up with Alex at IFSEC as the company began
promoting to the UK market in earnest.
Why does the UK need another intruder
option?
In our opinion the UK is the main market for
professional security systems in Europe and
from a numbers point of view it is one of the
biggest in terms of intrusion technology. In the
UK, people are really serious about security;
people know how to use it and you have a wellestablished
installer and monitoring
community. The problem for any new player is
the presence of such an established market,
which has some very successful local intruder
businesses already operating in it with proven
systems and solutions.
We were not previously operating in the UK
because we felt that the market was saturated
and people were not necessarily looking for a
new alternative at the time. However, from a
technology point of view I felt that the UK
intruder market was rather underdeveloped
compared to other parts of Europe, favouring a
conservative solution, and when we began
showing our tech to installers they told us that
it was very interesting and they would be keen
to take the systems to end users. That is why
we made a decision to set up a sales force on
INTERVIEW
“We don't see
intrusion as just
intruder products we
look at it from the
angle of integrated
systems and see
applications in
residential and
small- to mediumsized
businesses”
(continued from previous page)
the ground as we certainly didn't have a
problem with the equipment - it was more a
problem with the promotion. At this early stage
we are moving well and we truly believe that
our market share in the UK will grow quite
quickly.
You didn't just launch a simple system,
you've introduced many items - are these
the same as what you have out in
Europe?
Yes they are the same. We don't see intrusion as
just intruder products we look at it from the
angle of integrated systems and see
applications in residential and small- to
medium-sized businesses.
Our goal is to fulfil all of the requirements of
the customer, not just in terms of the intruder
side of security but also fire, flood/leakage,
home automation, video verification etc. We see
the approach of manufacturers like Apple with
robust technology and a good user experience
as the ideal roadmap for our company to
succeed.
How did you go about developing
something different for the market?
We decided to develop the whole system from
scratch. We didn't use any existing panel or
target any existing technology from
competitors, we simply put an iPhone down and
said "How would Apple produce a security
system, how would it work and what would it
look like?" so we were inspired by another
market altogether.
When we first started developing technology
we had some feedback on the sensing
technology and we worked closely with an alarm
response company for input. By doing this we
were able to deal with any problems with signal
failures, false alarms etc from the very
beginning rather than bringing out a system
with faults. Each time we approached a new
engineering task we ignored what already
existed in the market because much of what we
see in the market was developed up to a decade
ago, while we want to operate with a system
designed specifically for modern security
demands.
Do you expect your system to replace
technology already in place or be the
first install at a property?
I don't think it will be any different than it is in
the rest of Europe so we will see applications in
both scenarios. As people do their renovations
or look to secure new apartments we will
operate the same and not see these as two
different cases to be addressed separately.
These are early days for Ajax, but what
are your long-term plans?
We have several directions mapped out. First of
all we want to work with more monitoring
companies and at the same time develop new
protocols and user experiences for them.
Secondly we want to look at outdoor intrusion
systems and address the problems that people
may have experienced with the types of false
alarms you don't get with indoor intrusion
sensors. This is a field in which we think we
have the technology to be able to grow the
company.
How will technology evolve?
In terms of video verification, we already have
cameras and integration with streaming footage
and analytics including machine learning
capabilities, but this is another area which we
see as the future of the market so we will be
focusing a lot of attention on this.
20
www.psimagazine.co.uk
SMOKE DETECTION
Another key market is home automation and
at the moment we have three separate products
available and have set up a dedicated team to
work on services like lighting control, heating
etc that can be managed via the hub and in
September we are introducing Scenarios, which
will simplify installations even more for the
engineers.
With fire, there are some countries in Europe,
such as Norway and Finland, in which our main
business is actually wireless fire detection as we
see people there being more concerned with the
threat of fire than intrusion - this is why we will
treat fire as a standalone product rather than an
add-on and with the development of range
extenders we will be able to cover large areas
for residential and enterprise applications.
Is there a technology that you think the
UK could benefit from that is used
elsewhere in the world?
There is a proactive solution widely known as
stove guard which cuts power to a cooker to
prevent fires from happening in the first place.
This technology is already well-established and
“We didn't use any existing panel or target any existing
technology from competitors, we simply put an iPhone down
and said: How would Apple produce a security system, how
would it work and what would it look like?”
is actually mandatory in Scandinavia, but as yet
not anywhere near the same scale in Europe.
I can see this evolving from being a niche
business to being a widespread requirement
especially as the population is getting older.
This is a prime example of how modern
technology can help protect a changing
demographic and not only in terms of security,
but lifestyle.
EVENT
SiX
19
2
November 5/6
In Association with:
Associations support SiX
This year sees the inaugural
installer event SiX at EventCity in
Manchester in November. Here we
continue our preview of what is in
store for those attending and reveal
that the major UK trade
organisations support the show
As we discussed previously,SiX is aimed
squarely at the security installer and
system integrator. Running on 5-6th
November 2019, the event will offer a
conference programme delivered by experts, not
manufacturers or government bodies, alongside
an exhibition at EventCity Manchester. In
addition, the annual PSI Premier Awards Dinner
will be held on the evening of 5th November.
There are a number of reasons why PSI
publisher Pro-Activ took the decision to host the
show including the location, the timing and the
installer audience which has told us for some
time that they want their own event.
Industry approval for SiX
In recent months we have received the support
of the major industry organisations including the
SSAIB and NSI publicly putting their seal of
approval on SiX. This level of backing, from the
two main security approval bodies in the UK
alongside that of the FIA, BSIA and FSA indicates
the desire within the industry for an installer
focused event that addresses the needs of the
professional fire and security market.
But don’t take our word for it:
“The Fire & Security Association
(FSA) is keen to
improve the
professionalism of our
industry and boost
commercial
opportunities for our
members. We see the
SiX event as being key to
developing relationships across
the sector and vital for installers
looking to broaden their knowledge
and businesses”
- Steve Martin, FSA
“We see SiX as a
fantastic opportunity
to engage with
installers to discuss
standards and
regulations and how
we can raise the
professionalism of the security
industry. We invite all of our
members to come to Manchester
in November for the inaugural
event.” - Andrew Brown, SSAIB
“The FIA is the largest
fire protection trade
association in Europe
with more than 850
members. Our
objective is to
promote, improve and perfect fire
protection methods, devices,
services and apparatus and we
see SiX as being a great way to
help us to deliver on those
messages by informing
specifically targeting installers”
- Ian Moore, FIA
“As the mark of
approval for elite
companies within the
security and fire
safety sectors, the
OFF THE WALL
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
Sleepy cops allow early release
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the
fight against crime, however once in a while it
captures the public doing something that is
perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a
real one-off moment. Here we look at some
footage that made headlines recently…
Diner caught in fake choke scam
A prisoner is on the run in Argentina after he
escaped from a police car when two cops
guarding him fell asleep in the front seat. As
reported in the Daily Mail, Franco Antonio
Alderete, 18, was arrested in the province of
Buenos Aires and was being held on charges of aggravated
robbery with the use of a firearm and illegal possession of a
weapon for civilian use. CCTV captured the moment a
handcuffed Alderete calmly walked out of the truck without
waking up the two police officers at 4:37am local time.
Try before you buy - or not...
This shopper in the Hyper Value store in Barry
Island, South Wales took ‘try before you buy’
to a new level as she left the shop without
buying anything - just eating the goodies.
Apparently the flowery frocked thief wasn’t even bothered
about staring down the lens of the CCTV camera as she
snaffled the sweets with no intention of buying anything.
Bosses at the store said they are not an “eat half the packet
of honeycombs before you buy” kind of shop.
CCTV
Face trials and media waves
This month the media buzz around the use of facial recognition analytics in
public places showed no signs of abating as the story that the Home
Secretary was backing trials made all the major news outlets
We’ve been covering the recent court case
in Cardiff surrounding the capture of
images via facial recognition cameras by
the Police for a few months in PSI, but the story
has developed further with many of the major
news outlets covering the recent news that Sajid
Javid has backed trials of the facial recognition
cameras.
As reported by The Telegraph, the surveillance
software, which is designed to help spot suspects
in public spaces, has been trialled by forces
including Scotland Yard and South Wales where
the legal action is being mounted.
The action by Ed Bridges from Cardiff, and
backed by the civil rights group, Liberty, claims
his image may have been captured unlawfully on
facial recognition cameras from a police van while
he was out Christmas shopping in Cardiff city
centre.
They claim it violated his privacy and data
protection rights by processing an image taken of
him in public, yet the Home Secretary has said
that the analytics are an important tool to help
the Police solve crimes.
Police facial recognition cameras have been
trialled at events such as football matches,
festivals and parades, said BBC News, going on to
explain how the cameras are used: …highdefinition
cameras detect faces and compare
them with existing police photographs, such as
mugshots from previous arrests. But the
technology has been criticised for being too
inaccurate, particularly when identifying black
and ethnic minority people.
According to BBC reports, civil rights
campaigners have also criticised the fact there is
no specific regulation governing how police use
the software or manage the data gathered.
Speaking at the launch of new computer
technology aimed at helping police fight against
online child abuse, the Home Secretary said it
was right for forces to "be on top of the latest
technology" stating:
"I back the police in looking at technology and
trialling it and... different types of facial
recognition technology is being trialled especially
by the Met at the moment and I think it's right
they look at that".
He also suggested longer term use of the
cameras would require legislation: "If they want
to take it further it's also right that they come to
government, we look at it carefully and we set out
through Parliament how that can work," he said.
The Home Office said that a new technology
package, which includes facial recognition as one
of three new software systems, will help speed up
investigations and limit the number of indecent
images of children officers have to view. The aim
is to improve the study of the Child Abuse Image
Database, which holds millions of images as it
can take 24 hours for police to search through a
computer hard drive to see if it contains indecent
images. Using new technology, the analysis will
take 30 minutes. A system is also being made
available to reduce the time investigators have to
spend assessing the severity of abuse footage.
Meanwhile in the Guardian, Jamie Grierson
Home affairs correspondent pointed out that the
facial recognition analytics under trial, Neoface, is
supplied by the Japanese company NEC, which
markets the same technology to retailers and
casinos to spot regular customers, and to stadium
and concert operators to scan crowds for
“potential troublemakers”.
The technology and its use by police has met
criticism from some quarters with Tony Porter, the
surveillance camera commissioner, last year
intervening to stop Greater Manchester police
using facial recognition at the Trafford shopping
centre. This month, University of Essex
researchers who were given access to six live
trials by the Met found matches were correct in
only a fifth of cases and the system was likely to
break human rights laws.
"These trials represent the widespread
processing of biometric data of thousands of
Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said
in The Inquirer. "And that is a potential threat to
privacy that should concern us all."
Charlotte Walker-Osborn, International head of
technology sector at law firm Eversheds
Sutherland told PSI: “In spite of the immense
pressure on policing and the benefits that this
facial recognition technology can bring, a huge
divergence in opinion still remains. Public
confidence is needed around the large amount of
work technology suppliers have been doing to
seek to improve the accuracy of its results,
especially in relation to ethnic minorities and
black people.
“As with all technology which utilises artificial
intelligence, if the governments and companies
that adopt this technology put in place sensible
guidelines around its use, including around
privacy, there are undoubted benefits. Achieving
the right balance will be key here.”
Which is generally the state in which we are
currently in regarding the use of the technology
and its acceptance with liberties groups and the
public at large. On one hand there will always be
the anti-surveillance lobbyists who refuse to
accept any form of monitoring and those who say
“if you’ve nothing to hide…”.
The technology exists so we need to make a
decision fairly swiftly on how it is used. After all,
the mainstream media that reported on the
current facial recognition case would be all over
the story if news broke that a serious incident
could have been prevented if the software had
been used. It is right that the systems are being
trialled and hopefully we can soon determine the
best way forward to deal with any concerns.
The impact of GDPR on video
GDPR has been implemented for
over a year now, so what have we
learned? Regional Director Middle
Europe Edwin Roobol at Axis looks
at data responsibilities and a
future with fines...
On May 25 2018, the deadline for the
implementation of the European Union’s
General Data Protection Regulations
(GDPR) loomed large on the calendars of
organisations collecting and processing the
personal data of people living in the EU. While
the significant penalties for breach of the
regulations were well-publicised, to many the
implications of GDPR on their organisation were
less clear, particularly when it comes down to
what constituted personally identifiable data.
Most organisations were aware that GDPR
applied to text-based data – name, email and
physical addresses, etc. – but as was
highlighted in a guest blog post last year, static
and video images also represent personal
information to which GDPR applies.
Unfortunately the very first fine for noncompliance
was issued by the Austrian
regulator for breach of GDPR – only four months
after the regulation came into effect – was
related to the use of video surveillance.
Capturing the detailed images of passers-by and
not having adequate signage resulted in a 4,800
euro fine.
Furthermore, it is estimated that more than
14,000 data breaches and 41,000 complaints
from the public were filed in the UK alone, but
no fines have yet been issued (unlike in France
where Google was fined for $ 57m).
Even if the headlines may sound scary,
GDPR’s impact has been positive, in the sense
that it has made both companies and end users
aware of the value of their data, and of the
necessity to protect them. As a result,
companies are more clearly informing their
customers of how they collect personal data,
how and for what they use it and, critically,
making it much easier for people to choose
whether they are happy for their information to
be gathered (by, for instance, better
communication about the benefits of allowing
the organisation to process personal
information).
When used ethically and responsibly, video
surveillance is a positive force in creating a
smarter, safer and more secure world. It is
essential that these benefits become part of the
communication around the use of video
surveillance: that in informing people in any
specific situation that they are being filmed, the
benefits of that to their safety, security and
experience are also clearly communicated. It’s
also essential to inform people that though they
might be under video surveillance, their privacy
is a paramount consideration.
The future
Over the coming months and years, we will see
more stories of fines being imposed – large and
more modest – for breaches of GDPR, and
further examples of data loss and theft. While
the latter highlights the never-ending
importance of a rigorous approach to
cybersecurity, the former shows that GDPR is
being actively enforced; and enforcement of
regulation shows its effectiveness. This in turn,
means improved protection for personal data,
which is good news for us all.
Unfortunately the
very first fine for
non-compliance was
issued by the
Austrian regulator
for breach of GDPR –
only four months
after the regulation
came into effect –
was related to the
use of video
surveillance
Video upgrade without
interruption
Since renovation began in the 1990s, the Custard
Factory in central Birmingham has grown into an
important centre for the creative and digital industries, as well as a
destination for leisure, retail and cultural activities.
An ageing analogue video system was proving expensive to
maintain and, without enough cameras, it was giving only limited
coverage. An upgrade was needed but installation work had to take
place without disruption to the many businesses at the site, so
Unison Integrated Technology was asked to find the most suitable
solution.
More than 60 new high-performance IDIS cameras have now
been integrated giving complete coverage of this diverse estate
made up of the main Custard Factory Buildings, an open-air carpark, neighbouring external areas and the Fazeley studios.
To protect the carpark and external areas, including historic archways, a mix of cameras has been used, including dome
cameras with IR LED and wide dynamic range giving coverage in all lighting conditions. All IDIS IP cameras also benefit from IDIS
Smart Failover technology which ensures continued video capture in the event of network instability or failure.
Video is streamed to the control room via a SilverNet wireless link, yet crucially there is no latency or lag on the images. These
cameras are connected to a DR-6316 H.265 NVR, supporting 16 channels that utilises IDIS Intelligent Codec to minimise
bandwidth and storage requirements.
At the Fazeley studios, which includes both indoor and outdoor facilities, a combination of IP and analogue bullet cameras,
PTZs and domes are used. And at the Custard Factory main buildings, four PTZ cameras, two fixed domes and 25 bullet cameras
are connected to IDIS’s powerful DR-8364D recorder, which supports up to 64 channels with a super-fast 900Mps throughput.
Thanks to IDIS true plug-and-play technology Unison Integrated Technology installed the new
cameras without disruption or any need to stop trading during the work, which included working
around operational restaurants and shops. At the purpose-built security control room operators now
have a complete view of the site, allowing them to replace inefficient patrols on foot with more
frequent video tours. And the free IDIS Center video management system (VMS) makes it easy to
operate the new, enhanced system. Visit: www.idisglobal.com
Dedicated app and new integration with
Milestone Access for Inception
Inner Range’s award-winning Entry level access control system
Inception has been upgraded with a new dedicated app and the
ability to integrate with the Milestone Access platform.
New and existing customers can now use the Sky Command App to control
access remotely. It allows interactive control and live status of areas, inputs, doors
and outputs as well as simple or multimode area arming options. Push notifications
can be sent to smartphones helping security managers stay alert to any changes on site.
A new integration with Milestone XProtect video management system allows the Inception controller to become the security
and access mechanism supporting the Milestone system. Multiple Inception systems can be integrated with a single Milestone
system for multi-site monitoring.
The integration means live access and alarm events can be sent to Milestone, allowing a wide range of actions to be triggered
within the Milestone system, such as operators being able to compare video footage to a user’s photo to grant access.
The latest update for Inception also includes the ability to customise notifications that are sent to security managers about
events on site as well as the capability to secure the Local Area Network (LAN) and detect if a module has been substituted
without permission. A warning now indicates if the LAN is not secured and any detected module substitutions are automatically
reported.
Tim Northwood, General Manager at Inner Range, said: “These enhancements add to Inception’s competitive advantage,
offering easier and smarter access for security managers, the option to integrate with
Milestone XProtect and even better security when it comes to the LAN and rogue module
substitution. Inception is a now an even greater access and security system for power and
flexibility that’s also quick and easy to install and won’t break the bank.”
The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,
configuration, installation and reporting of a video
security project has just been made simple by a very clever app from
Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free
from various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and
smartphone devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms.
We wanted it to be accessible to everyone, because everyone should be benefiting from the control, transparency and efficiency
made possible by the Project Assistant app at every phase of a video security project.
Now, project set-up and pre-configuration can start in the office without the physical camera. Only
the project plans, IP addresses and a password from the client are required for the system integrator
to create a new project via the app (or an Excel-compatible file format), with the option to set up per
camera, or multiple cameras at once.
Clearer views on building safety
monitoring
Huge amounts of money have been put into making sure
buildings and the people in it are safe and secure; now it must
stay that way. That means keeping an eye on every corner of a property, from the
front doors to the loading docks and everywhere in between. There are minute to
minute decisions that must be made based on everything that happens on those
cameras.
Even the best security teams have gaps or distractions. Can you depend on
them to notice that a trashcan has been moved, a backpack left behind or any abandoned object? Will they overlook someone
hanging around too long outside the front door because they are loitering with intent or even innocently? Analytics built into
monitoring systems can do that dozens of times a minute, without bias, and trigger warnings when something is out of place.
You want the clearest view on the most secure platform available with the ability to upgrade as
your needs change. equIP high definition cameras not only makes your building more secure, it
makes it more effective to keep watch 24/7. The newest equIP cameras are more secure, offer
clearer views even in low light and better analytics than ever before. www.honeywellvideo.com
PANEL
Sharing is caring...?
An article on the PSI website
recently stated that allowing
worried families access to CCTV
could help prevent abuse cases at
care homes, but would this work -
and what about privacy issues?
The PSI Panel takes a look at the
combination of care and
surveillance
According to Jonathan Ratcliffe of
cctv.co.uk, writing on the PSI website ,
thanks to the undercover journalism by
programmes including BBC Panorama, we have
all become aware of the harrowing abuse
suffered by residents in a small number of care
homes in the UK. Tragic cases of abuse such as
those seen at Whorlton Hall are thankfully very
rare, but it is still deeply worrying to many
people with relatives in care.
“I propose a solution to give the families of
elderly people in care homes extra peace of
mind and say it’s time that families should be
given 24-hour CCTV access to the care homes
responsible for their elderly relatives, and that
this become a legal requirement in the UK,”
says Jonathan.
“Families are more concerned than ever that
their relatives may be harmed or taken
advantage of, and with round-the-clock CCTV
they can instantly check in to ensure their
loved ones are being properly looked after at
any time of day.
“This remote access direct into the heart of a
care home will give reassurance to anxious
families who can’t be there all the time,
relieving any worry that abuse may be going on,
and any guilt they might feel if they don’t spot it
in time.
“As more and more families come forward to
express their worries about abuse in care,
CCTV.co.uk is now calling on the Government to
make this 24-hour CCTV surveillance a legal
requirement in both care homes and hospitals.”
Jonathan concludes: “Not one person who
watched the BBC Panorama programme can say
they weren’t moved by the horrific footage of
bullying and abuse. Families need to know their
loved ones are being looked after properly,
CCTV can provide this. Families should be given
24/7 access to view all cameras in a care home
of a loved one – if there is nothing to hide, there
is no problem.”
David Davies - DVS
Well this is a very emotive
subject and one that is very
hard to answer, so I am
answering it from my own
point of view and personal
experiences. My answer would
be yes and within reason, for
instance all the care homes I have been in have
individual bedroom or living quarters , and
“Families should be
given 24-hour CCTV
access to the care
homes responsible for
their elderly relatives,
and that this become
a legal requirement in
the UK”
www.psimagazine.co.uk
PANEL
(from previous page)
be the family’s responsibility to provide
surveillance for people in homes, to which
common sense would answer with a
resounding negative.
However, one possible solution to this
ethical and logistical quandary would be to
install CCTV in nonprivate locations only, such
as function rooms, dining rooms, sitting rooms
and kitchens, the monitoring of which could be
accessed by the family at any time. Not only
would this be beneficial for the individual
concerned, but for others in care as well, and
would also provide caregivers with added
security.
A pertinent question
is whether or not it
should be the family’s
responsibility to
provide surveillance
for people in homes,
to which common
sense would answer
with a resounding
negative
44
here this shouldn’t be an issue to provide App
access for family members that want to have
this, and this may be for safety reasons, or just
to have the comfort that someone close is
watching and could speak to them over the 2-
way audio function, I would take great comfort
from this myself.
Outside of this area would be hard with
privacy reasons but these could be monitored
with CCTV closed system that you have to put a
access request in to view any footage of your
loved ones within reason, which may then make
staff more aware of their surroundings and
potential actions , and this is not to say staff do
anything wrong.
For me I think I would take it another step
further and provide not just a camera with
audio function, but link an alarm button
perhaps into this that could be used to alarm
of potential issues, and why not add a video
screen into a unit that allows video calling, in
this day and age we can be anywhere in the
world but just a click away, and yes for me
maybe it’s selfish, maybe I want that kind of
comfort or backup, but for me I know I would
have done that for anyone I have lost in the
past.
Kerry Jones - PSM
Although the idea of allowing
families 24/7 access to
monitor their elderly relatives
in care is appealing, given
that they would be able to
record and protect against
instances of mistreatment,
this raises the question of whether or not it
would be an invasion of privacy. Another
pertinent question is whether or not it should
Fitting every care home in Britain with CCTV
could save the NHS £370million a year, it
was claimed in the Daily Express last month.
The move would see staff not needing to call
999 every time a resident suffers an
unwitnessed fall. One home boss said he has
saved the NHS £50,000 this year by
installing CCTV as he has not had to summon
ambulances on all but three of 119 occasions.
If this pattern was replicated in all 11,300 UK
care homes it would equal a potential saving
of more than £1million a day.
Andrew Geach, who runs Shedfield Lodge
Care Home in Southampton, said: "It's a
mind-blowing figure but it's real money
which could be ploughed back into social
care. Most who suffer unwitnessed falls end
up coming back to homes in the early hours
with no injuries at all. With safety
monitoring, everyone wins." Protocol
requires care homes to call an ambulance,
every time there is an unwitnessed fall
because it could lead to a potentially serious
head injury.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he
backed calls for safety monitoring in care
homes telling the Express that he agreed
with campaigners who argue it would protect
vulnerable residents and staff, giving fresh
hope it could soon be a legal requirement
that all homes are equipped.
A spokesman for the Department of
Health and Social Care said: "Ensuring the
safety and wellbeing of those in care should
be the highest of priorities. We will consider
any schemes which have the potential to
help reduce pressures on the NHS and
improve people's lives." www.express.co.uk
PROMOTION
SEEING OFF THE CYBER THREAT
The introduction of IP network security
solutions has delivered significant
benefits, not the least of which has been
the ability to integrate a wide range of security,
building management and business intelligence
systems. The result had been to deliver a far
more powerful, effective, and easy to use
solution that enables businesses to identify
opportunities to be more productive, ensure
compliance with health & safety policies and
help security personnel keep one step ahead of
thieves, vandals and saboteurs.
The potential downside to IP based systems
is that they are targets for cyber attack and
there have been many incidents over recent
years of security systems being compromised
by the determined efforts of individual
opportunistic hackers, as well as organised
criminal gangs, who have succeeded in
obtaining access to confidential data or video.
You may be involved in mission critical
activities which demand a high level of security
or you may be a small business owner with a
small number of fashion stores. Either way,
malicious cyber attacks can have dire
consequences.
Johnson Controls, Cyber Solutions
Product Security Program
The threat to the reputation of the electronic
security industry and more importantly, the
potential consequential loss to our customers,
has fully justified the significant efforts made by
Johnson Controls’ design engineers to ensure
the credentials of security solutions is our
number one priority.
The Johnson Controls, Cyber Solutions
Product Security Program is a holistic approach
to Cybersecurity for physical security products.
It has been developed with the benefit of
experience of providing high security and
mission critical solutions to Government and
multi-national customers.
The program takes on-board feedback from
IT, security professional and cybersecurity
experts in order to combine best practice during
the product development, testing and
evaluation process, as well as configuration
guidelines for compliance in order to protect our
physical security products from attack, damage,
disruption, unauthorised access or misuse.
The holistic methodology to this program is
designed to give installers, systems integrators
and end-users the confidence that Johnson
Controls has minimised the possibility of
introducing vulnerabilities into its Tyco branded
electronic security solutions. The cybersecurity
mindset is applied across the entire Tyco
security solutions portfolio which includes
Software House access control solutions,
American Dynamics video management
systems, and Illustra IP cameras.
The Back Door
An unsecured IP camera or access control
device serve as point of access where a hacker
can penetrate a security system as it offers the
opportunity for hackers to find a way onto a
company’s network with the possibility to gain
access to company confidential data, disable
systems and disrupt operations. With this in
mind, in addition to the testing conducted by
our Cyber solutions team, we arrange for
independent testing to be conducted annually
on our products to ensure that any new
firmware or software updates do not open the
‘back door’.
Johnson Controls understands that risk may
increase as hackers find new ways to attack
and products must continuously evolve to
provide suff icient protection with the
announcement of a new vulnerability. The
Cyber solutions team is constantly monitoring a
variety of sources, from the US National
Vulnerability Database, to various media and
professional sources to identify new
vulnerabilities that may impact our cyber
program-compliant products.
The potential
downside to IP based
systems is that they
are targets for cyber
attack and there have
been many incidents
over recent years of
security systems
being compromised
POWERFUL WEB BASED CONTROLLER
SIMPLE & EASY INSTALLATION
CLOUD
Cloud: improving access
Cloud-based access control systems
are changing the market landscape,
providing secondary security benefits
to installers and users across the UK
All buildings need to regulate their building
security, from government-owned
educational and healthcare facilities right
through to small commercial properties.
With this in mind, balancing security features
with other factors has always been a challenge.
Facility managers and decision makers alike have
to account for accessibility and usability
alongside safety and security – not to mention
budgets and building capabilities. With this, and
the fact that many traditional security systems
can sometimes be demanding to manage, it’s
clear as to why facilities are beginning to
implement cloud-based systems into their
security strategies.
The importance of cyber
security
According to Trevor Ball, business development
manager UK & Ireland at Allegion UK, the
construction industry has not always been first to
implement ‘cutting edge’ technologies: “From an
external viewpoint, many forget the extensive
standards that decision makers must abide by –
with these considerations sometimes slowing the
process for technology adaptation,” he says. “For
those that have combined traditional security
methods with electronic systems, new security
demands must still be considered.”
One of those new demands is cybersecurity,
which in its simplest of terms, is the protection of
internet-connected systems, whether this be in
the form of software, data or hardware. As with
most internet-connected systems, today’s access
control systems are also at risk to cyber attacks –
with potentially detrimental consequences to
building security. With this being a new area for
some (consider schools or small commercial
facilities), questions are now being raised on how
to effectively secure a building from two angles
both physically and electronically.
“Take a school entrance for example” explains
Trevor. “With various access points across the
building, schools can be known to use fobs or
keycards as a way of granting access and
monitoring movement. However, with many of
these access control systems being operated from
a local internal server, they can become
vulnerable to cyber attacks. These access control
systems require internal maintenance, updates
and data back-ups. If a slight mistake is made
with the data that’s being handled on-site, it
could lead to a less secure digital infrastructure.
One cyber attack later and, suddenly, the physical
security of the school is compromised. So what’s
the answer to this growing issue?”
The rise of the cloud
Today, cloud-based systems can offer UK facilities
enhanced security with integration into their
access control systems. In fact, worldwide
spending on cloud computing is expected to grow
by 23.8% this year, with spend expected to reach
$210 billion USD in 2019. In an increasingly digital
age the growing need to protect a facility
physically and electronically paired with the
benefits that cloud-based solutions offer, is why
these numbers for worldwide expenditure on
cloud computing is rising.
“Cloud systems essentially store and access
data online, taking it away from an on-premise
computer or server,” says Trevor Ball. “When
integrated into an access control system, cloud
solutions offer facilities a number of operational
choices. Users can set how visitors are granted
access into the building, with a number of
situations possible, such as registration in a
reception area paired with visitor passes. Of
course, other factors need to be taken into
account, such as the required movement of the
As with most
internet-connected
systems, today’s
access control
systems are also at
risk to cyber attacks –
with potentially
detrimental
consequences to
building security
CLOUD
(from previous page)
compared to those that are handled by third-party
organisations.”
With cloud-based systems, the maintenance is
taken away from internal teams, saving time and
resources and giving peace of mind that updates
are being handled by expert teams. This extra
layer of security is why schools, among other
facilities, across the UK are beginning to make the
switch.
There is a common misconception
that on-site closed network
security solutions are more
secure. With plenty of evidence
against this, cloud-based systems
are progressively being seen as
the best equipped systems for
cyber attacks
visitor; but this is left in the hands of the decision
maker. With the cloud, these decisions are
designed to be made quickly and effortlessly – all
via the internet and all while providing extra
digital security.”
Yet, there is a common misconception that onsite
closed network security solutions are more
secure. With plenty of evidence against this,
cloud-based systems are progressively being
seen as the best equipped systems for cyber
attacks (providing the correct procedures are put
in place, i.e. two-factor authentication). For an
internally managed system, facilities may need a
large amount of resources, time and even budget
to keep it running smoothly. Updates, in
particular, can be a timely and precise process,
and when done manually on-site, there’s the
chance that a lax approach or a common mistake
could cause huge security repercussions.
“Looking back to that example of a school
entrance and those that operate access control
from an on-site server,” says Trevor, “it is
possible for users to implement multiple layers of
security to their on-site infrastructures by
themselves. Yet, in reality, many lack the
expertise and experience to enforce this. With
schools, in particular, stretched IT teams and
budget issues can sometimes result to a more
lenient or less meticulous operation. This
increases the possibility that their access control
systems become vulnerable to cyber attacks,
highlighting the weaknesses of these systems
Traditional benefits
Aside from being the best protection for cyber
attacks, cloud-based systems are offering
decision makers a number of other benefits.
Doors and physical locations aren’t the only
areas where these cloud-based systems can
improve security. The nature of these cloud-based
systems allow for additional use in some unusual
but highly beneficial scenarios. Forklift operators,
parking gate users and those that require access
to drug cabinets (whether based in hospitals or
on-duty ambulances) can all do so with integrated
cloud solutions.
Accessibility isn’t the only benefit to facilities
either. Cloud-based systems offer decision
makers full flexibility in terms of how they can
adapt to a building. This flexibility allows for huge
scalability options, enabling a building to grow
with its access control system – without
presenting any additional security issues.
Effortless access control
The importance of building security has always
been paramount to those involved with access
control. Now, with physical security and
cybersecurity both needing to be considered, it’s
imperative for facilities to keep up with the IoT
movement by using access control systems that
can protect their facilities from multiple security
threats.
“The effortless nature of cloud-based systems
is simplifying, but progressing, access control
processes for facilities across the UK. The cloud is
much more than an industry trend, it’s
revolutionising access control,” concludes Trevor.
Miniature railway updates
analogue CCTV system to IP
A Wisenet video surveillance system
manufactured by Hanwha Techwin is being used
by the operators of the Audley End Miniature
Railway to ensure that the 100,000 plus people
who visit the Railway every year are able to safely
enjoy the facilities.
Originally installed as a replacement for an old
analogue CCTV system following a number of
security incidents, the new IP network based
Wisenet system is now also being used to keep a
close eye on the trains moving around the 2.4
kilometre track and visitor car parking areas. In
addition, it is also helping with the management
of the queues of people waiting to buy tickets and
to ensure compliance with health and safety
regulations.
The video surveillance system, comprising 14
cameras and NVR, has been installed by Eastern
Voice and Data, who also designed and installed
the Miniature Railway’s network and Wi-Fi.
Among the 14 cameras installed are five QNO-
7030R bullet and six QND-7010R dome cameras.
These are all able to capture 4megapixel images
of objects regardless of the lighting conditions,
with the help of built-in IR illumination.
Part of the Wisenet Q camera series, the
cameras also feature defocus, motion and tamper
detection, hallway view and lens distortion
correction, whilst support for PoE has negated the
need for Eastern Voice and Data to have to
University study supported by
redeployable CCTV technology
Reading University has chosen Revader
Security’s Transit range of redeployable CCTV
cameras for use in its agricultural department.
The university uses Transit cameras to
monitor and record groups of Holstein calves on
their campus farm, to detect changes in
behaviour as a direct result of various stimuli.
Items such as broom heads, rubber teats, plastic
chains and carefully positioned hay-bags are
systematically included, removed and
repositioned in the cattle pens. Calves are also
segregated, paired or otherwise grouped
periodically to detect any change in their
behaviour due to social changes.
Video footage is recorded over a period of
about six months, then analysed using various
software techniques. It is hoped that these
provide separate power supplies and cabling to
each camera location.
Images captured from all the cameras are
recorded and stored on a 16-channel Wisenet
XRN-1610S NVR, which is equipped with a PoE
switch.
“Our old CCTV was well past its ‘use-by’ date
and lacked the functionality required to help us
maintain a safe environment for our visitors and
staff, as well as deter would-be intruders and
vandals,” said Bob Ottaway, General Manager of
the Audley End Miniature Railway. “We are now
able to closely monitor all activity throughout the
site during opening hours, and with the help of
the Wisenet Mobile App, we can also be remotely
alerted via smartphones and tablets to any
suspicious activity when we are closed.”
studies will lead to better welfare for calves in
the future and ultimately lead to greater milk
production.
The Revader Transit Camera was selected for
its rugged construction, IP67 environmental
rating, on-board video storage in full HD for over
30 days and ability to download large files over
a Wi-Fi link to a laptop. The integral IR lamps
enable continuous video recording 24/7 and
with the PTZ (Pan Tilt & Zoom) set to continuous
tours of pre-set views, it provides a complete
video history of all the calves in the behavioural
testing program.
Stuart Caldecourt, Managing Director at
Revader Security said: “We were delighted to be
able to supply the university with the CCTV
technology they require in order to further their
research.”
The university is aiming to assess the results
of the study at the end of the year.
Cameras ensure positive dining
experiences in Derby
Scenariio has deployed Axis Companion network
video cameras into two SME eateries to help
increase the safety and security of customers
and improve the overall dining experience. The
Axis Companion range, deployed within Hide
Burger Bar and Bean Caffé in Derby, has been
designed to meet the safety and security needs
of small businesses.
The Axis Companion network cameras provide
the capability to remotely observe both sites
through a mobile device, giving management
staff peace-of-mind that the establishments are
running efficiently when they are off-site. The
technology also allows managers to monitor
potential operational issues such as cash
transactions and health and safety compliance in
food preparation. This in turn helps to protect
the interests of staff and customers.
Scenariio installed a network of four cameras,
including the Axis Companion Cube, Eye LVE,
Dome and Dome W, to provide 24/7 coverage of
the inside of Hide and its kitchens. An additional
wireless Axis Companion Cube W was installed at
Bean Caffé behind the main counter.
The opportunity to view video footage in realtime
doesn’t just allow the bar and café to halt or
report instances of theft, but also to monitor how
busy the dining areas are. This helps them to
ensure sufficient staff are available to serve
customers quickly and guarantee the dining
experience.
HD PTZ aids Felixstowe Coastwatch
The Predator Ultra HD PTZ video surveillance camera from 360
Vision Technology, has entered service at the National Coastwatch
Institution’s (NCI) Felixstowe lookout station along the coastline of
the River Deben estuary.
The estuary has shifting shingle banks and bar can present quite
a challenge for maritime navigation, as Ian Clarke of Felixstowe
Coastwatch explains: “Half of all call outs from the RNLI Harwich
Lifeboat Station during 2016/17 were to attend incidents in this
area, so it was clear that additional observation of the area would
be beneficial and help to make it safer.”
Felixstowe Coastwatch’s Lookout is built on top of Martello
Tower ‘P’ built in the early 1800s as a defence against a possible
invasion by Napoleon.
“Originally, the first idea to tackle the maritime issues at the
River Deben estuary was to build an additional lookout tower,” says
Ian. “That would have been a prohibitively costly exercise for a
charity-based organisation. However, after a visit to the NCI Station
at Portland Bill, I was inspired by the use of CCTV there and
interested to establish if video surveillance could be deployed to
monitor the remote Deben estuary from our existing lookout
station.
The 360 Vision Predator Ultra HD was installed by STC Solutions
after funds were raised from council-allocated budget and
fundraising events organised by Felixstowe Coastwatch volunteers.
With no line of sight from the camera to the lookout tower, a
wireless transmission solution was employed, using a belfry tower
at a midway point in Felixstowe, where the signal is relayed to
enable control and recording of the high definition images back at
the lookout station. Now operators can view live images of the River
Deben, to confirm the identity, position and situation of vessels in
the mouth of the river and if necessary, contact HM Coastguard if
any problems are observed.
Felixstowe Coastwatch is currently looking at other areas of the
coastline where high-definition cameras could assist with their
daily operations, to protect the public and maritime traffic.
Key health check at the London
Clinic in Harley Street
The London Clinic in Harley Street has installed
bespoke Traka solutions to ensure accountable
authorised access and instant audit control
capability for keys across its hospital facilities.
With hundreds of keys and access points in
operation across the hospital, the Security and
Operations team was reliant on a manual logging
in and out system, which was proving inefficient
and risked time delays to patient care.
Life safety system installed at
the Titanic Hotel in Belfast
A new boutique hotel has recently opened its
doors in one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic
and culturally-significant buildings in Belfast’s
Titanic Quarter. The Titanic Hotel is designed as
an homage to Belfast’s shipbuilding history as
well as its namesake ocean-liner. The building
features an art-deco style interior that mirrors
the craftsmanship and precise attention to detail
paid when designing the RMS Titanic’s interior.
There were various considerations to take
into account when designing a life safety system
for the hotel. The project called for a solution
In sourcing a more innovative way to keep track
of authorised access, especially to drugs cabinets
and the Clinic’s ten specialist theatre areas, Traka
was installed and networked across the site. The
benefits of instant audit control capability and
additionally being able to set curfews for different
staff rotas has already made a significant
difference in the efficient running of the Clinic.
Lee Humphries, General Manager Security
Operations at The London Clinic said: “Security
and key management are integral not only to the
efficient running of the Clinic but also to ensure
the safety of our staff, patients and guests.
Traka’s system is a breath of fresh air to monitor
keys and instantly be aware of their location;
allowing our staff to focus on delivering highquality
service.”
In total, Traka has installed four networked key
cabinets, which utilise its Traka32 technology to
provide all the administration tools needed for the
Clinic to effectively manage operations from its
server and still provide extensive real-time data
capture.
Within the system, the Security team has now
set curfews so that keys not returned will
automatically trigger a notification, sent via email
and text. There is also an opportunity for
authorised personnel to pre-book keys in
advance, so they are reserved, which has proven
especially useful to manage contractor access and
works programmes.
that could be easily installed with minimal
disruption, and networked to suit the various
environments inside the hotel including
bedrooms, kitchens, a public-accessed museum,
and conference spaces.
To meet these requirements, Hochiki Europe
supplied a range of products from its Enhanced
Systems Protocol (ESP) range.
Sensors in the range are designed to utilise
an electronics-free, ‘twist-fit’ mounting base.
This gives installers, in this case Belfast-based
Atlas World, the opportunity to fix the bases at
“first fix” stage, with sensors added at a later
stage, once the environment is clean.
Over 200 sensors from Hochiki Europe’s ESP
range were installed throughout the Titanic
Hotel as part of a £15,000 project. Using a
combination of ACC-EN multi-sensors and ALN-
EN smoke sensors, Atlas World were able to
programme the devices to suit the different
environments within the hotel and their differing
life safety considerations.
Richard Wharram, Regional Sales Manager at
Hochiki Europe, noted: “Hotels present a very
unique set of requirements when it comes to life
safety, even more so when they are listed
buildings like the Titanic Hotel. The need to find
solutions that match the different spaces and
uses within the hotel, from restaurant kitchens
and bars to bedrooms, public areas and lounges,
while also ensuring ease of installation, can
prove challenging. It’s fantastic to see how new
technology is helping protect such an iconic
project and a unique part of Belfast’s history.”
What is the biggest security industry myth?
Bobby Dhunay - Tel Cam
Security Systems
Insurance is a big issue in our
industry and there are many
misconceptions, however one that I
see over and over again is people
who believe that they are fully safe
with a DIY security system which is
not insurance approved.
Mark Gray - Sitewatch Fire &
Nobody really knows where myths
come from they are based on
information passed around where
information gets distorted. Being in
the security sector there is a need of
secrecy due the nature of our
business. Inevitably the legitimate
security industry is always shadowed by false alarms and the
way they can be defeated as seen on the movies. However in the
years to come the security industry will feature some of the most
exciting developments.
Security
That you can buy a bespoke professional
system on the internet. There’s a
misperception that what we, as
professional security installers, provide
can be replicated by something you buy
online and install yourself. You can’t
replicate the quality of a professionally
installed system, or the expertise of those qualified to install it.
You get what you pay for.
Andy Convery - IPSS
It can be tricky getting beyond the
mindset that some people have about
intruder alarms not doing anything to
prevent burglaries - all as a result of bellsonly
systems being ignored by passersby.
The lack of awareness about ARCs and
police response can lead people to believe
that alarms either serve no purpose or they can fit it themselves.
Only a properly installed system will work properly.
Tim Lamb - FSE Security
Systems
I would probably say that most people
outside the industry watch Hollywood
movies and see security systems
regularly being beaten and
circumvented. This is a definite myth and
if it was that easy then security systems
would prove to be completely
inadequate at their job in the real world. The security industry
spends all its time and efforts producing systems that can’t be
fooled so easily.
However, we shouldn’t rubbish TV and films too much, after
all these mediums have helped to bring public awareness to the
types of systems available and how they can offer a formidable
barrier to intruders and criminals.
Peter Goodchild - Welgard
When I first started in the industry there
was a mindset that if you had a burglar
alarm on your property then you must
have something worth stealing, which at
the time was probably true because the
systems were not cheap in those days.
However, today the technology is so
affordable that it no longer fair to say
that about alarms, although you do occasionally still hear it. The
other myth concerns spiders setting off detectors - I'm not sure if
that's as common an event as people say. I think this is more a
case of the engineer's skill set and whether or not they have
checked if there is reduced voltage on the cable or any
environmental issues.
Dave Sanders - Justice Fire &
Security
I think with domestic customers the myth
that if you have an intruder alarm or CCTV
“you must have something worth
stealing” - everyone has something worth
stealing! The car keys are the favourite
these days and whilst it can be a bit of a
grudge purchase one thing we have found is that when someone
has been broken into without an alarm system the first thing
they do if they move home is have that system fitted as a priority
- a case of once bitten...!
REVIEWS
TRIED & TESTED
Hers is an overview of some of the products we have featured in
PSI independent test reports. This month we highlight a range of
systems listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and
distributors have no input in the test reports or results
Master Lock – CHW30300EURHR0
This Digital Security Chest is designed to preserve digital hard drives,
electronic equipment, documents, photo albums, money, jewellery and
more and is listed as being able to endure temperatures up to 843°C
for 30 minutes protecting the stored contents (reportedly keeping
items at 177°C) and it is ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratory) verified.
Review: It is a good idea to have some form of security in your trade vehicle for the
safe storage of cash. This chest is certainly secure enough to do the job and is not of
the kind of weight or shape that anyone is going to be able to get away with easily. With
an SRP of just £90 this is a solid unit that could prove priceless. 9.0/10
Ajax – Wireless Alarm System
The Ajax alarm system is a wireless based EN50131 Grade 2 range of components that can be mixed and matched to
suit a variety of home and office environments. Components are available in white or black finish to suit the décor of the
site. Smartphone setup, management and monitoring along with extended
battery life mean that the system is easy to install and use.
Review: A wide range of detectors and simple set-up process
makes for a potentially very quick
installation. Good access to diagnostic
information for monitoring purposes
coupled with relatively straightforward
battery changing. 9.5/10
Optex – BXS-AM Detector
This is a wall or pole mountable IP55 outdoor “curtain” PIR intrusion detector that has dual narrow
passive infrared detection zones either side of the device. Intended for example to cover side walls of
buildings in order to trigger an alarm when people approach too close to the property. These side
zones have a range of up to 12 metres, giving a coverage of up to 24 metres in total.
Review: A very straightforward alarm device with clear operation and simple set-up.
Apart from the reservations regarding cable entry and security of access the unit
performs well and should prove easy to install. 8.5/10
Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1
This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light illumination from
one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is centred on 850nm and a 940nm
version is available on request. Power is by 4-Pair PoE or optionally through a separate 24v
DC supply.
Review: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not excessively flare on near
objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the infrared had good even illumination over distance
and allowed a good contrast range for subjects. Extremely versatile. 9.0/10
SMOKE DETECTION
Codelocks – CL4510
The CL4510 is a door lock that combines smart technology with a traditional keypad
and card access options suitable for a range of applications. One of the main benefits of
the system is that the user can choose the most suitable entry method(s) for the
application, therefore not limiting the scope of where installers can specify the lock.
Review: The fact that one unit can do so much, especially when paired with the multifunction
K3 Connect app makes this lock a dependable choice. Furthermore this is a
straightforward future-proofed unit that does not require complicated installation work
or either party having in-depth programming knowledge. 9.0/10
Union – DoorSense
DoorSense from Union, part of Assa Abloy Security Solutions is a legal way for fire
doors to be kept open for access and be able to close automatically in the event of an
alarm. The battery-operated system is CE marked to EN 1155 standards.
Review: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it weighs a ton it is
actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect the effort required in everyday
use of the door. 9.0/10
Aiphone – JPS-4AEDV
The pack contains all the necessary items for a single door
video intercom. The IP54, IK08 rated door station provides a
170° image with a stated 5 lux minimum illumination at the
50cm optimum focus point. The internal Video Master Station
features a 7” touch screen and has facilities for monitoring additional security
devices.
Review: Flexible product with a wide range of connection capabilities and
optional components available to fulfil the majority of video entry requirements
for the small commercial and small to large residential properties. 9.0/10
Jackloc – Mk2 Restrictor
The window restrictor featuring a five disc locking barrel is tested to BS EN
13126-5:2011 and BS EN14351-1:2006, and while there are generic
products available that follow a similar style, this unit is the higher spec
end of the market.
Review: The simplest solutions are often the most effective
and the Jackloc Mk2 with key lock certainly fulfils any
requirements without complicated installation. It’s well
worth having a few of these in stock should the need arise
for window safety. 9.0/10
Seagate – SkyHawk ST14000VX0008
The 14TB SkyHawk is a conventionally packaged 3.5” hard drive with SATA
connection. It is promoted as a surveillance optimised drive with “superior image
integrity”. Multi-Tier Caching allows for up to 64 HD video streams to be handled.
Review: A very fast and efficient hard drive with an impressive specification, vast
storage and manufacturer support for data recovery if required. The attention to the specific current
and developing requirements of the surveillance industry should ensure that this drive provides the
required performance and longevity of service. 9.0/10
