The keys to a win for the Frontenacs tonight in game 1 against the Niagara IceDogs will come down to how effective they are on three key points in their gameplan. 1. Quick start: In the first round match up against Oshawa, Kingston struggled to get going a few times early in the game. At the midway point of the first period the shots were even more often than not. Kingston usually found their stride and ended up controlling the game. Playing Oshawa they got away with it, but against Niagara they might not be so lucky. Niagara is a much more skilled team than the Generals were and they have a lot more firepower. If Kingston comes out of the gate slow they could find themselves down two or three goals. The Frontenacs have to be ready to go at puck drop because it won’t be as easy to find their rhythm against a tougher opponent in Niagara. 2. Get to the man advantage: If you look at the regular season matchups there is one stat that sticks out. Kingston was successful on nearly 30% of their power play chances. That is an incredibly good number. In the last game between the two teams we saw that things can get a little rough. Kingston can really help their cause by letting the rough stuff go after the whistle. They don’t want to lose the physical game as that is a huge part of the Frontenacs game plan, but make sure everything is a clean hockey play. Get Niagara frustrated and let them take the penalties giving the power play a chance to work. If Kingston can repeat the success of the power play that they saw in the regular season match ups then it will be extremely hard for Niagara to win games in this series. 3. Back to Work: It’s been six days since Kingston’s last game. They have had a chance to rest, both physically and mentally. However, this is the 2nd round of the OHL playoffs and it’s time to put the hard hats back on. A new opponent will bring new challenges and the 2nd round will have additional pressure and intensity. Be ready, be prepared and get back to work!
