KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT

FRONTS PREPARE FOR HIGH OCTANE OFFENCE

SPIRIT BRING HIGHEST SCORING OFFENCE IN THE WEST TO LEON’S CENTRE

The Kingston Frontenacs did a great job of shutting

down a highly skilled forward in Arthur Kaliyev on

Monday night when they defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Tonight, they face a similar situation but will have

to repeat the task against multiple members of the opposition.

The Saginaw Spirit are the highest scoring team in

the OHL’s Western Conference. Entering their game on

Thursday night in Peterborough they had scored 187

goals trailing only the Ottawa 67’s for highest scoring

team in the OHL. The trade deadline addition of Ryan

Suzuki, who had 11 points in just 5 games with his

new team, bolstered an already impressive group.

Damien Giroux, who is in his fourth season with the

Spirit, has already reached 48 points and 27 goals.

Both of those numbers are just three short of his career

high in those categories. Cole Coskey sits one spot

ahead of him on team scoring. The overage player has

57 points in his 44 games this season. The biggest

threat for the Spirit is NHL draft eligible Cole Perfetti.

The potential top 5 pick in the upcoming NHL draft

has 75 points and 51 assists. He is second in OHL

scoring sitting just 3 points behind Marco Rossi for the

league lead.

For the Frontenacs to earn points in this game,

the defensive core will have to be at it’s best. Captain

Jakob Brahaney, and assistant Nick King will see big

minutes against the top line, but assistant Jake Murray

and Lucas Peric will also play a key role. Braden

Haché had his best game as a Frontenac on Monday

night and may also see some important minutes as he

earns his coaches trust.

Regardless of who is called upon to take on the

challenge, one thing is for sure, The Frontenacs need

their best defensive effort to earn a win against the

high scoring team from Saginaw. KF

by Marcus Boutilier

@bouthockey ohlnetwork.ca

After a trio of forwards were taken with the Kingston

Frontenacs first three selections last summer,

General Manager Darren Kiely looked to find a pillar on

the backend and Braden Haché became that player.

Selected 63rd overall in the fourth round at the 2019

Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, he’s joined

Shane Wright, Francesco Arcuri, and Maddox Callens

as an ever-growing staple of the current roster.

Born May 21, 2003, in New Hampshire, he moved

to Canada in 2007 and began playing Timbits hockey in

Newmarket, ON. Braden played his minor hockey with

the York-Simcoe Express program during his bantam

year in 2017-18 while also suiting up for a game with

the minor midget squad earning two assists. During his

minor midget campaign in 2018-19, he appeared in 26

games earning two goals and nine assists for 11 points

while playing a clean, physical game and showing off

his ability to play a strong defensive game in the d-zone

earning the eye of Kingston scouts.

Since making his Frontenacs debut in Hamilton

on Oct 6 after recovering from an early-season injury,

the left-handed Haché has continually earned more

confidence from his former pro-defensemen coach

and has been a part of some memorable moments

already. After making a big hit in a game vs Sudbury

on Nov 22, the rookie was instigated into a fight with a

veteran player and held his own proving he will back up

his play if need be. Less than a week later, Hache was

a part of the Teddy Bear Toss goal making a beautiful

three-line stretch pass earning an assist on a Justin

Pringle strike sending the stuffed animals on the ice for

his first OHL point on Nov 29 at home.

He’s collected four more assists for five points in

25 games heading into Friday’s matchup vs Saginaw.

Showing his excellent two-way game, Haché leads

the team with a +2 rating with (min 25 gms) and has

registered 16 shots on goal. He has won the Hardest

Working Player award voted by fans on multiple

occasions already showing his play is appreciated by

the Leon’s Centre home-crowd. “It’s always an honour

when your home fans recognize me but it’s a team and

I can’t win anything without them.”

At 6-2 and 200 pounds, the rookie has shown his

size off with physical play and is not afraid to use his

body to make life uncomfortable for opposing forwards

in the Frontenacs zone. One of Braden’s most notable

skills has been the ability to play arguably the toughest

position, as a rookie in the OHL, while not putting his

team down with a penalty. As physical as he’s been

playing a hard-nosed defence against some of the best

20-and-under players in the world he plays a smartgame.

Some of this style can be attributed to his having a

father who refereed in the NHL helping learn the game

through the eyes of the officials. Haché has also spent

16

BILLY KIMMERLY

time on the ice as with a black-and-white jersey on

himself reffing close to 50 Novice and Atom games

up to last summer and though his OHL career has

become the priority, he remains passionate about

the officiating side off hockey. His father Conrad is

currently the OHL’s Director of Officiating.

Coach Kurtis Foster says: “He’s been great,

with some increased ice time I’ve really loved the

physicality back there, you want a guy that plays on

the edge and makes sure the opposition knows it’s

not going to be easy. When you’re a big, physical kid

who plays hard and you stay out of the box its an

advantage. Pretty impressive as a 16-year-old and I’m

looking forward to what he can grow into.”

Eligible for the NHL draft in 2021, the confident

defenceman looks forward to getting better every day

under the tutelage of his teammates and coaches.

Hache quoted: “I love the game so much, respect it,

and only want to always improve.” KF
