KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT

OTTERS MAKING ONLY VISIT OF THE SEASON

FRONTS TRY TO EVEN SEASON SERIES AGAINST OTTERS ON HOME ICE

When the Eastern and Western Conference clash

in the OHL, there are many unknowns. The

Frontenacs and the Otters have only seen each other

once this season, and that was nearly three months

ago. It was the Otters who left with two points that day

after a 4-1 win in Erie.

Since that game, the Frontenacs have made significant

changes. They have added Christian Propp,

Nick King, Dustin Hutton, Ethan Ritchie, and Martin

Chromiak. Those additions helped get the Frontenacs

back into playoff contention. They won 8 of 10 games

between Nov. 16 and Dec. 13, including wins over

power house teams like Peterborough and Oshawa.

That helped Kingston get within 7 points of the final

playoff spot with three games in hand entering play

on Thursday.

The Otters also find themselves in a battle for the

final playoff spot. They currently sit in the 8th spot but

are just a point up on the Owen Sound Attack. They

have struggled recently winning just 3 of their past 10

games before playing in Peterborough last night.

Ryan Dugas will likely be excited to face the Otters.

He recorded his first two career victories over the Otters,

including his first career shutout in a 4-0 win on

September 29, 2018.

With the Otters only making one trip a year to

Kingston, a single loss can make it feel like forever

between head to head wins for either team. The Frontenacs

have won the last two games at Leon’s Centre

meaning Erie hasn’t won in Kingston since February

5, 2017. The all time match-up is very close. Kingston

has won 21 times while Erie has taken 26 victories. KF

Every team needs a goaltender that can battle

through tough situations at times of games and

Ryan Dugas continues to prove he can handle the

crease when called upon with the confidence of his

teammates and coaches to help them pull out a win.

Born July 10, 2001, he gained valuable experience

from 2014-2016 while playing with the Mississauga

bantam team. The 6’0”, 200 lbs. goalie suited up for

the East Coast Selects U14 and U15 teams teaming

up with two current teammates including Lucas Rowe

for two years and defenceman Lucas Peric joining the

pair during the 2014-15 season.

Dugas was taken 68th overall in the fourth round

during the 2017 Ontario Hockey League Priority

Selection from the Mississauga Reps Minor Midget

AAA program where he’d just posted a 1.99 goalsagainst-average

in 17 games during the 2016-

17 season. In a league facing the likes of future

Frontenacs Nick Wong, Dustin Hutton, Jordan Frasca,

Evan Brand and 2019 NHL number one pick Jack

Hughes, Dugas led his team to a championship.

During the season-ending 2017 OHL Cup, playing

with Kingston teammates Lucas Rowe and Dennis

Golovatchev, he was tremendous backstopping his

team to a championship win playing in five games

posting an impressive 1.37 goals-against average

16

and .932 save percentage. Golovatchev scored the

winning goal with less than 10 seconds left after Rowe

won a face-off giving Dugas the goaltending edge over

current Hamilton Bulldogs goalie Zachary Roy.

After appearing in one game for Kingston during

the 2017 pre-season, Ryan spent the 2017-18 season

continuing to work on his game in the Greater Ontario

Junior Hockey League with the Ancaster Avalanche.

He appeared in 30 regular-season games holding a

healthy 2.01 goals-against average and .931 save

percentage and his numbers improved to a 1.50 and

.942 during nine playoff games.

The 2018-19 season saw Dugas become Brendan

Bonello’s back-up in Kingston after appearing in two

preseason games allowing just four goals against. On

Sept 29 he made a fantastic OHL debut on the road,

turning away 27 shots in a 4-0 win over the Erie Otters

for his first career shutout in his first game. He beat

Erie again at home two weeks later 7-4 for his second

win in his third start.

On Nov 3, the Hamilton, Ontario native also took a

shutout eight minutes into the third, making 35 of 36

saves, to help Kingston beat his hometown Bulldogs

5-1. In a turn of events, after 17 starts in his rookie

campaign, Dugas had an accident and broke his ankle

at home during the holidays ending his season. But,

much like he plays, the mentally tough player battled

through rehab and worked on his mental game and

prepared to come back this season ready to go.

This season saw Dugas start the year in a backup

role and while wins were not coming easy for the

team he had some solid starts including a 39 save

performance in a 4-2 loss to Hamilton on Oct 18th.

He was phenomenal in a 3-1 Kingston win in Owen

Sound on Nov 16 making 41 of 42 saves including

a 17 shot 1st period to help halt Kingston’s 12-

game losing slide. He came back with a second

consecutive winning performance in the next game

making 32 saves against East Conference contender

Peterborough Petes in a 4-3 shootout win.

In the 4-2 win on Dec 29th in Mississauga, Dugas

was nothing short of spectacular as he turned away

a career high 51 shots. Showing signs of his mental

toughness, the athletic goalie stopped an amazing 25

of 26 shots in the third period to help Kingston gain

ground on the Steelheads who are above them in the

standings.

Ryan credits former teammate Brendan Bonello

with helping him get to this point in his career and

routinely soaked up advice from his veteran teammate

while the two played together. With Bonello having

moved on, Dugas now joins Christian Propp in what

has been a solid duo helping Kingston back into a

conference playoff race. Head coach Kurtis Foster is

always impressed with his compete level and desire to

not give in when things aren’t going well and credits it

to his hard work on and off the ice in what is one of the

tougher positions to play in all of sports.

Coming into tonight’s action vs Ottawa 67’s, the

2021 NHL draft-eligible has four goals, eight assists

for 12 points placing him 16th amongst OHL rookies

and 9th in Kingston scoring and is currently on a threegame

point streak (1G,2A). At 6’0”, 182 lbs, he hasn’t

been afraid to get in the dirty areas of the ice and plays

a subtle physical game. KF
