KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT

FRONTS LOOK FOR NEW RESULT AGAINST DOGS

KINGSTON TRAILS HAMILTON 4-0 IN SEASON SERIES THIS SEASON

It has been a struggle for the Kingston Frontenacs

when they take on the Hamilton Bulldogs so far this

season. The Bulldogs have taken the first four decisions

between the two division rivals, and they have

earned those wins in a variety of different ways. Despite

Kingston being winless so far, expect tonight’s

game to come down to the wire.

In the first meeting of the season, regulation and

overtime wasn’t enough to decide a winner. Tag Bertuzzi

tied the game for the Bulldogs with less than five

minutes left and then scored the only goal in the shootout

to give his team the win. Zayde Wisdom scored

both Kingston goals in a 3-2 shootout loss.

The next time it was Kingston looking for a late goal

to tie the game but Arthur Kaliyev scored his second

of the game into an empty net to seal a 4-2 victory.

Ryan Dugas was excellent in the loss making 39 saves

on 42 shots.

Kingston looked to have Hamilton on the ropes

with a 2-0 lead in the third meeting, but the Bulldogs

stormed back to take a 5-2 victory at Leon’s Centre

in December. Shane Wright recorded his first goal

against the Bulldogs to open the scoring in the game.

In the most recent meeting, the game appeared destined

for overtime once more. A bad bounce in the closing

minutes cost the Frontenacs at least one point and

maybe their first win of the season over the Bulldogs.

Tonight, Kingston is hoping that two straight home

wins last weekend is the spark they need to finally

break into the win column against their division rival.

As the Frontenacs push towards a playoff spot, tonight

is the perfect time to break through. KF

The success of any hockey team can be attributed

to its defence and how they translate with

the forward corps to provide support in front of

the goaltenders and transition into getting pucks

quickly out of the defensive zone into the hands of

the offensive players. It’s a bonus when you have

a player like Jake Murray who can provide these

attributes from the backend while also being a part

of the offence as well.

At 6 foot two, 190 pounds, he’s an excellent

skater able to move the puck out of his zone with

ease but also blessed with a vision for making smart

passes to start a breakout. While he likes to join the

rush and provide offensive support, Murray is smart

enough and quick enough to get back in position

when the opposition gets the puck. Just as much as

a 200-foot forward is valued to a coach, a two-way

defender like Murray is also as desirable.

Before midget hockey, the left-handed defender

played in the illustrious Quebec International Peewee

Tournament in 2014-15 and was a member of the

East Coast Selects program for two years leading

up to his midget campaign with the Rangers. He

dressed in a combined 13 games for the U13 (2015-

16) and U14 (2016-17) squads adding four assists.

The Oakville, ON native played with the Oakville

Rangers Minor Midget AAA program in 2017-18

enjoying an excellent regular season with his team

going undefeated. Murray provided nine goals, 25

16

assists for 34 points in 35 games and registered a

goal and four points in the season-ending OHL Cup

earning a bronze medal teaming up with current

Frontenacs defenceman Ethan Ritchie. He and

Ritchie played seven years together during their

minor hockey. The then 15-year-old played two

games with the OJHL’s Oakville Blades.

Kingston made Murray their first pick at the 2018

OHL Priority Selection 13th overall as the teams’ firstround

selection looking to add a mobile defenceman

with size. He played his first exhibition game vs

Ottawa at home on Sept 2 finishing with an assist

in three pre-season games. Jumping right into the

mix, the rookie played his first OHL game on Sept 20

in Peterborough and got his first career point in his

home debut, assisting on a Jason Robertson gamewinner

during a 5-2 Frontenacs win over Oshawa in

his second game. During the opening month, he also

scored his first career goal Oct 19 on the road vs Soo

Greyhounds with Brett Neumann and Robertson,

returning the favour, with assists.

In 62 games during the 2018-19 season, he

showed off his ability to skate out of his zone at times

with relative ease, contributing two goals and eight

points helping chip in offence while gaining valuable

experience defending against the opposition’s best

forwards. He registered almost a shot-per-game

average with 60 pucks on net showing off a heavily

powered slapshot. He also earned OHL East Division

Academic Player of the Month for February and

represented Canada Red at the U17 tournament

collecting three points in six games.

BILLY KIMMERLY

The 2019-20 season has seen Murray take on an

even larger role transitioning from a first year player

himself, to now helping guide new rookies with

some of the already-garnered experience he’s built

up earning the “A” on his jersey. While still a young

player himself, he is a quiet leader in the room

treating his teammates, coaches, and game with

respect. He is a hockey-sponge soaking up lessons

from current captain Jakob Brahaney saying: “I’m

always watching how he plays, his work ethic and

it’s something I want to lead by as well.” He has

happily taken advantage of being tutored by former

pro defenceman and current head coach Kurtis

Foster. And his coach has seen him step up: “He’s

led by example every day and leads the right way.”

Murray also credits his minor hockey coach Gord

Hynes (former pro and Olympic Silver Medalist) for

helping his career. Hynes described Murray as “...

a strong character, a really good person and he’s a

super athlete in many ways.”

Turning 18-years-old on April 11, the 2020 NHL

draft-eligible Murray has surpassed point totals

from last year and continually works on getting

more shots through from the point holding a 1.61

shots-on-goal per game average (an increase of

over a half a shot a game). Six times he has fired

four or more shots in a game.

Twice this season he’s had a three-game point

streak and was pivotal in a multi-point game on Nov

24 against Mississauga. His goal in the game made

OHL highlight reels as he deked through three

defenders before putting a high backhand in the

net. Having registered three assists in the opening

14 games with a -15 rating, he has two goals and

eight points while being a plus one since Nov 1

and has steadily improved his defensive play while

continually showing off his puck-moving ability.

Says coach Foster: “He’s really been coming on the

last couple months playing much more assertive

hockey.”

He appeared in his 100th game on Jan 10

at home versus Owen Sound and has been on

the NHL Central Scouting List all season joining

teammates Martin Chromiak and Zayde Wisdom

on the latest list. KF
