COLLINSON CUSTOM BUILDING presents
KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
THE RETURN OF THE VETERANS
AFTER THEIR NHL CAMPS, DESROCHER AND HELVIG WELCOMED BACK TO THE FRONTS ROSTER
The Kingston Frontenacs have come to accept
the reality that good teams transfer
into good drafts which mean bearer cupboards
on the roster early in the season. Early in the
2014-15 season the wait for Sam Bennett’s
return had the club playing the waiting game.
Last season, the question of Lawson Crouse’s
return from Florida was quickly answered
when he was returned from the Panthers at
the end of their camp. So far this season the
Frontenacs have enjoyed the return of veterans
Stephen Desrocher (Toronto Maple Leafs)
and Jeremy Helvig (Carolina Hurricanes) while
they await the fate of Warren Foegele (Carolina
Hurricanes) and Lawson Crouse (Arizona Coyotes)
as the NHL season begins this weekend.
Spencer Watson continues to recover from
wrist surgery and isn’t expected to return to
the roster until mid-year.
ROADY ROUND UP: Since the home opener on
Friday, September 23, the Frontenacs have
played four straight road games before returning
home tonight. The Frontenacs were .500
on the road, starting with a 7-2 loss in Hamilton,
a 5-0 win in Niagara, a 6-1 loss in Erie,
and a 2-1 win in Ottawa last night.
The Fronteancs now have four straight
home games, beginning with tonight’s matchup
against Sagniaw, before heading back on
the road to Windsor, Saginaw, and Flint beginning
on October 20.
PINK IN THE RINK: Next Friday’s game vs. Sault
Ste. Marie will see the return of the popular
pink jerseys as the Kingston Frontenacs honour
breast cancers surivors and their families
with the annual Pink In The Rink. The game
will also feature the Surivor Walk during the
first intermission. Listen for SideShow’s cue on
the public address system and join us as we
honour the cancer fighters at the game next
Friday.
FRONTENACS WELCOME
THE RETURN OF
8 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

y Doug Graham
Kingston Whig-Standard
S
tephen Desrocher comes back to the Kingston
Frontenacs with some encouragement from the Toronto
Maple Leafs brass.
Desrocher will play as a 20-year-old overage defenceman
for the Frontenacs, knowing the Leafs are
happy with their 2015 draft prospect (Round 6, 155th
overall).
Desrocher, acquired by general manager Doug
Gilmour from the Oshawa Generals in a trade last November,
has taken to heart what Leafs general manager
Lou Lamoriello and assistant GM Kyle Dubas told him
during the exit talks.
“They thought I had a good camp and told me a
few things that they want me to work on throughout the
season,” Desrocher said.
“They want me to be a leader [for the Frontenacs]
on and off the ice and continue to develop every day.
That’s what I’m going to do here and hopefully next
year I can make the step.”
Desrocher, in his second camp experience with
the Leafs, advanced from the rookie camp to the main
camp in Halifax.
“It is always fun to get out there, battle with the best
of them and see what it takes,” Desrocher said.
“It is pretty eye-opening. Making the NHL is obviously
pretty hard. Mitch Marner [the London Knights
star], he’s a once-in-a-generation player and [yet] he
is not going to be given anything. He’s got to earn it.
“There are a lot of steps and a lot of players in each
organization. It is a lot harder than it might seem to
people.”
Frontenacs head coach Paul McFarland, who has
known Desrocher since their days together in Oshawa,
said the return of the six-foot-four, 206-pound, left-shot
defenceman is obviously big for the club.
“Stephen’s a great kid [with] a great attitude. I think
he brings a lot of leadership and life into our dressing
room,” McFarland said.
“Obviously he’s a guy that can play in all situations.
It’s just great to have him back as part of it. He’s going
to be a huge piece for us.”
Desrocher, who last season played 69 games in
a 68-game regular-season Ontario Hockey League
schedule — 17 for Oshawa and 52 for the Frontenacs
— has oodles of junior experience. He will surpass the
200-game mark by December this season. Including
Oshawa’s 21-game run to the Memorial Cup in 2015,
he has played in 42 post-season games.
“Leadership is one of those things where you probably
take it for granted when you have lots of it. You
realize how important it is when you have a younger
group,” said McFarland.
“Experience, that’s why it is just so important to get
Stephen back. He’s been there, played the big games
and won [the Memorial Cup]. But also in the dressing
room, making sure we are prepared the right way for
each and every period.”
Desrocher said he plans to earn his pro contract
through his play with the Frontenacs.
“I’m going to try and do as much as I can to help
the team. Then hopefully through that it will earn me a
contract,” he said.
“Try to get this team as far as we can. For that to
happen I’ve got to be at my best and so does everyone
else. If I’m at my best, hopefully I can get a contract.
So that’s my goal.”
Desrocher knows he is going to be relied on for big
minutes on the blue-line. He got that last year with
Roland McKeown around. Now McKeown is gone and
up-and-coming star Jacob Paquette has had his NHL
draft season delayed by an injury, so there is a big need
for Desrocher on the blue-line to help nurture Jakob
Brahaney, Colin Van Den Hurk and Eemeli Rasanen.
“I am looking forward to playing in all situations and
getting as much ice time as I can. I’ve got to be ready
for my opportunities because I’m going to have some
this year,” Durocher said.
“Stephen has played 20 plus minutes for two or
three years now. This year will be no different,” Mc-
Farland said.
“We expect him to create offence. He’s a guy that
has got a big shot. He’s got to get up in the rush, make
sure he is active at both ends of the ice.
“Being a 20-year-old the league starts to slow down
for you. He’ll be a big contributor for us.”
Ontario Hockey League
Lawson Crouse, Spencer Watson, Warren
Foegele and Stephen Desrocher are all
impact names within the grasp of the
Kingston Frontenacs for this season, but the
timetable upon which they’ll dawn the black and
gold again remains shrouded in mystery.
After one of the most memorable and exciting
seasons in franchise history, the Frontenacs,
fresh off their first East Division title since 1995,
have the potential to be very competitive again.
“Coming into it we see the East as being pretty
wide open,” said Frontenacs general manager
Doug Gilmour. “Who do we have? What direction
do we go? We don’t know yet, and that’ll be a
decision we’ll have to make after we take some
time to see what we have here.”
he’s a leader.”
As they await Crouse’s possible return, the
Frontenacs have an intriguing overage situation
featuring three players all drafted by NHL clubs.
Spencer Watson, who signed with the Los
Angeles Kings last April, underwent offseason
wrist surgery and won’t return until approximately
mid-December. His 43 goals last season were
the most by a Frontenacs player since Matt
Elich’s 44 in 1999.
“After discussions with Los Angeles we’re led
to believe that there’s a good chance Spencer will
be back with us,” said Gilmour of the situation.
“It’s still kind of up in the air, but his missing
half the season may delay his graduation by one
year.”
Carolina Hurricanes prospect Warren
Foegele, a third round pick by the club prior to
his OHL career in 2014, remains unsigned and
WITH SOME FAMILIAR NAMES AND A FEW NEW FACES, THE 2016-17 EDITION OF THE KINGSTON
FRONTENACS ARE OUT TO CREATE THEIR OWN IDENTITY IN THE OHL’S EASTERN CONFERENCE.
Power winger Lawson Crouse will attend camp
with the Arizona Coyotes after being dealt to the
desert by the Florida Panthers this past summer.
The 6-foot-4, 210Ib. flank who has represented
Canada at the World Juniors in each of the past
two years is a special talent for the Frontenacs
and could get an extended look with the Coyotes.
“Lawson is a big man who plays the game as
hard as anyone,” said Gilmour. “Obviously with
the shakeup that happened in Florida this past
year there were some changes made and Arizona
got themselves a guy who, once he makes it to
the NHL, is going to have a 15-17 year career
and possibly be the captain of that team. I think
there’s some incentive there for Lawson to show
his new team what he can do. He demands
respect in the dressing room for everybody and
could return as a 20-year-old.
“The addition of Foegele gave us another
layer of depth last season and, should he be
back with us, he’d be our number one centre,”
said Gilmour. “His work ethic is over the top and
he has that extra gear, that breakaway speed that
few players possess.”
With Crouse, Watson and Foegele all in the
plans, the Frontenacs also feature the OHL Pre-
Season’s leading scorer in 17-year-old Finnish
winger Linus Nyman while 2016 first round pick
Nathan Dunkley lead the league in goals with six.
Sophomore winger Jason Robertson, whose
18 goals last season were the most by a Fronts
16-year-old since Anthony Stewart in 2002,
has worked hard on his skating and is quickly
developing into a reliable offensive option in
Kingston.
“Jason is just one of those guys who finds
ways to get on the scoresheet,” said Gilmour,
who many could say had a similar knack during
his playing days. “He’s not the quickest guy on
the ice, but he always finds ways to make plays
and get to the net. He improved on his strength
this past summer and he will be a lot of fun to
watch.”
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Stephen
Desrocher could be a big asset on the blue
line as an overager. Desrocher was drafted as a
19-year-old by Toronto, giving the club until the
end of this season to sign him to an entry-level
deal.
Desrocher’s potential return would give the
Frontenacs a veteran to play alongside highly
touted youngsters in draft eligible Jacob Paquette
and 6-foot-6 Finnish talent Eemeli Rasanen.
“There’s a new look on the blue line with
Roland McKeown having moved on,” said
Gilmour. “We think Jacob Paquette can be one
of the top draft eligible guys in our league this
year, that Rasanen has a lot to offer with that big
wingspan and that (17-year-old) Jakob Brahaney
took big strides during his time with the Kingston
Voyageurs last season.”
The Frontenacs will also feature 19-year-old
Liam Murray, 18-year-old commitment Liam
Kendall and youngsters Colin Ven Den Hurk and
Emmett Gordon as options on the back end.
Overager Nathan Billitier also remains with the
club.
Jeremy Helving returns to the crease after
quietly emerging as one of the league’s top
goaltenders in a limited role last season. From
January to the end of the 2015-16 season, Helvig
went 12-1-0-1 with a 1.67 goals-against-average
and a .944 save percentage over 15 games. The
fifth round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes last
summer will see his share of minutes this time
around.
“It can be hard as a backup sometimes to
get into games when the team is on a roll, but
Jeremy stepped up and made the most of his
chances last season,” said Gilmour. “He paid
his dues, worked really hard in practice, and got
himself onto the NHL radar with a great second
half. He’s a big body that keeps getting better
and we’ll be counting on him.”
With plenty of questions from the outset this
season, the Frontenacs will take things a day
at a time until their roster is solidified following
decisions in the pro ranks.
“We’re going young here as well,” said
Gilmour of his club’s makeup. “We’ve added
some young guys to the group and we’re
committed to developing those players for the
future.”
“Mississauga looks like they’ll be good and
there are some other teams who will be making
improvements, but we think we’re right there.”
After setting new single-season marks for
wins (46) and points (97) last season, the
Frontenacs look to build off that momentum
and remain a competitive presence in the East
Division.
