KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
PINK IN THE RINK
PRESENTED BY CATARAQUI CENTRE IN SUPPORT OF THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY’S BREAST CANCER PROGRAMS
The original Black and Gold of the OHL
has traded in the traditional killer bee uniforms
tonight for a pinker look. Pink in the
Rink presented by Cataraqui Centre in support
of the Canadian Cancer Society’s breast
cancer programs returns for a sixth consecutive
season. Continuing the tradition from
2014, the Frontenacs will again sport limited
edition pink jerseys and socks for the game,
which will be put up for online action with net
proceeds to be donated to the Canadian Cancer
Society.
“This is a very important cause for our
team to get behind and raise awareness and
funds to help in the fight against breast cancer,”
said Justin Chenier, Executive Director
of Business Operations with the Kingston
Frontenacs. “One in nine Canadian women
will develop breast cancer, but through the
great work from agencies like Canadian Cancer
Society, the five year survival rate for
breast cancer today is 88 percent, which is
up from 73 percent in the 80s.”
“Thanks to partner organizations like the
Cataraqui Centre and Kingston Frontenacs
and fundraising events like Pink in the Rink
we are the largest charitable funders of cancer
research in Canada,” said Doug Kane,
Manager of Canadian Cancer Society Kingston.
“Because of this funded research survival
rates for cancer have jumped significantly
over the last several decades.”
SURVIVOR WALK: Tonight’s first intermission
will again feature a Survivor Walk, where cancer
survivors and their supporters in attendance
are invited to join together in a victory
lap around the ice during the 1st intermission.
arren Foegele had never skated as a centre
until he came from the U.S. collegiate
hockey ranks to join the Kingston Frontenacs
last November.
About a month into his time with the Frontenacs
Foegele was moved from left wing to
play centre. He went on to learn the craft of
winning faceoffs, using his speed up the middle
and becoming a good playmaker.
The Markham native looked very much the
natural at centre and that’s apparently what
the Carolina Hurricanes thought about their
20-year-old prospect.
“[Carolina] said they like him in the middle
so we are going to continue to use him in the
middle. That’s where we love him the best,
too,” said Frontenacs head coach Paul McFarland
of Foegele, who has returned from Carolina’s
National Hockey League camp to play his
overage Ontario Hockey League season for the
Frontenacs.
Carolina general manager Ron Francis, in
his exit talk with their 2014 third-round draft
pick, spelled out what the Hurricanes envisioned
for Foegele.
“We decided for my long-term development
that it would make sense for me to go back to
Kingston, play in many opportunities and log
minutes instead of just playing in the American
League for four or five minutes a night,”
Foegele said.
“This gives me a better chance to work on
some things I need to work on and we’ll go from
there.”
The Frontenacs, of course, welcome the
return of Foegele. It came at the same time
the team learned Lawson Crouse would not be
returning to junior. The 19-year-old Crouse has
made the roster of the Arizona Coyotes.
“I’m sure Warren gained a lot from just be-
ing around [NHL] players for almost a month.
That experience is invaluable to him and to
us,” McFarland said.
“To have a guy like him back with that experience,
it’s only going to help our young guys.
He is going to be a guy that leads by example
for us each and every night.”
Sure enough, as Foegele took part in his
first practice Wednesday at the Rogers K-Rock
Centre, the six-foot-two forward led the drills
and when he wasn’t involved in a drill he was
talking to a teammate.
“Warren is mature beyond his years. He’s
got pro habits whether in practice, how he
prepares for practices or how he prepares for
games,” McFarland said.
“All those things are going to be the little
things that rub off on some of our younger players.
His work ethic every day is something that
our guys need to see.
“He doesn’t take a shift off. It’s exciting to
have a guy like that back in our lineup.”
Foegele, who was attending his first NHL
camp, took part in the prospects tournament,
helping Carolina to a win. He went on to the
main Hurricanes camp and was with the big
team until the end of exhibition play.
“Overall I thought it was a great experience.
I learned a lot. I thought I worked hard and
that’s a reason I stayed there so long,” Foegele
said.
McFarland said the feedback the Frontenacs
received from Carolina was that Foegele
had a good camp and made a great impression.
“Those are lots of positives for him to take
away. I’m sure it helps his confidence coming
back to our league,” McFarland said.
“From what we heard from [Carolina] they
liked him in the middle so we are going to continue
to use him in the middle. He’s good on
faceoffs, he plays the 200-foot game [and] he
gets the puck more with speed in the middle so
he is going to stay at centre.”
Foegele had 13 goals and 48 points in 52
regular-season games last year. He was a big
performer in the playoffs, scoring eight times,
two of them game-winners over the Oshawa
Generals.
Foegele had only 19 points at the Christmas
break. He took off offensively when Michael Dal
Colle came to Kingston from Oshawa in an early
January trade-deadline deal. Foegele went into
the middle with Dal Colle and Spencer Watson
on the wings and the line became one of the
best in the OHL.
Foegele won’t have near the same talent on
his wings this season but he welcomes playing
the middle again.
“I think I see the ice better up the middle.
I’ve got good speed and I work hard and am a
reliable player out there,” Foegele said.
“If they want me to play centre I’m going to
play centre. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Frontenacs This Week // CogecoTV
The keys to a win for the Kingston
Frontenacs tonight against the Sault Ste.
Marie Greyhounds will come down to
how effective they are on three key points in
their gameplan.
1. THE NEXT GOAL IS BIG Last weekend Kingston
started to put up some goals, something that
was missing from the first two weeks of the
season. We needed the power play to get going
and it absolutely did. Although they scored
some more goals, only twice did they score
consecutive goals in a game. This team is
going to play in a lot of close games this season
and one goal games will be common, so every
2. GET AHEAD EARLY SO YOU CAN SHUT DOWN LATE
Kingston has only had a lead entering the 3rd
period once this season. That was in Niagara
in a 4-0 win. Getting to the third with a lead is
so important to a team’s success. It takes the
pressure off one aspect of the game, that being
the offence, and allows a team to focus on the
defensive side. For a team this young, it allows
Paul McFarland to lay out exactly what he is
looking for in the dressing room over a 17-minute
break rather than a 30 second timeout on the
bench. The youth of this team would benefit
from the extra time to focus on their job before
hitting the ice. You can look at any team’s record
when leading entering the 3rd and I’m willing to
bet its above a 75% success rate. When tied or
losing entering the 3rd it drops significantly. Play
BILLY KIMMERLY
chance they get they need to stretch the lead
out and buy some breathing room. Once they
get the first one, they need to get the next one
too.
the numbers and get a lead early to improve
your chances of winning in the end.
3. USE GETTING ABOVE .500 AS MOTIVATION Some
teams work all season long to stay at or be just
above .500, which is where Kingston sits right
now. When you get above .500 early in the
season that can motivate you to not drop below
that mark. In your mind you just want to win
the next one to stay above and as those single
wins start to add up, so do the points and you
begin to climb the standings. One win against
the Soo could be the launching point to climb
to the top of the standings simply because it
was the one that made them a “winning” team.
ticket holder and is co-host and analyst on Frontenacs
