The Danish students coped remarkably
well with the new challenges. They were
charming, relaxed and full-of-beans –
fine ambassadors for Denmark. The
people in Great Yarmouth loved them.
It was such a privilege also to see the
results of the famous Danish folk school
tradition being playing out in human
form before our very eyes. A party of
Great Yarmouth High School children
paid a return visit to Arhus later in the
year. They had a wonderful time. The
hospitality was superb and so many
kind Danish parents looked after our
children magnificently. There were expeditions
to places like Summerland,
the spectacular Arhus City Hall and
Danish Radio. Vorrevangskolen itself is
such a beautiful building, so thoughtfully
designed, each classroom with its own
private garden. The staff-room was a
happy and welcoming place.

It seems so long since I was last in Arhus.
I wish you all at Vorrevangskolen
the very best for the future. This includes
the teachers, students, support
staff and parents. I hope we gave you
as much happiness as you gave us.
The time we spent “exchanging” with
you has provided everyone involved
with fond memories that will last forever.
Our students were envious of the freedom
your students had to take some
responsibility for your own learning and
were very impressed when they saw
students their age helping pedestrians
cross the road. One of the major differences
they noted was that Danish
students called their teachers by their
first names. I would love to have seen
our country adopt such a sensible attitude
between students and staff. Our
students were envious of the way you
celebrate your leavers’ day by water
fights in the playground and some staff
getting involved too!!!. What a sensible
approach to a special day in the lives of
your students.
Good luck to all of you in Arhus and
I know our paths will cross again in
the future. Until then “1000 tak” to all
of you.
