Tilbage fra Hong Kong
Af Kim Larsen, LC Hellerup
samt Helena og Vincent,
Hong Kong
Det hele startede i marts måned,
hvor jeg modtog en mail
fra Hong Kong. Der stod:
”I'm Helena of Hong Kong.
I have participated in the
Youth Exchange to Denmark
in 2004. I participated in the
camp in Frederikssund. If
you could remember, I'm one
of the two Chinese girls who
found it difficult to bike then!”
Jeg var YECC’er i det år i distriktet
og havde selvfølgelig
ikke glemt de to piger fra
Hong Kong, og da Helena
samtidig fortalte om de planer,
som hun og hendes ven
havde for sommeren, kunne
jeg ikke lade være med at tage
udfordringen op. De ville på
cykel-/campingtur i Danmark
og ville køre Jylland på langs.
Efter flere afslag på sponsorering
af de to cykler, lykkedes det
at låne to, som endte med at blive
godt brugt på en over 500 km
lang cykeltur med oppakning.
Nedenfor er den beretning, jeg
har fået af Helena og Vincent,
lige før de fortsatte til Frankrig
for i tre uger at arbejde
på en gård, før de vender næsen
hjem af til universitetet.
Helena and
Vincent’s story
It was in 2004 that I went for
a youth exchange program
in Denmark. Well…the reason
for choosing Denmark
was only a wild pick from
hundreds of places’ names.
It is now in 2007 that I come
back with a rather frantic idea
– to have a cycling trip across
Jutland from South to North.
Back in 2004…
I was never a good biker and
everybody knew this well in
the camp! I had been falling off
down the slope with my bike,
just because I did not know
how to use the footbrake (even
though I was being taught for
many times…) I was the one
who did not know how to get on
my own bike, and not to mention
how I could stop it; And I
was also the one who biked as
clumsy as one could get, when
all the others were passing
swiftly through the roundabout.
That was then, and nobody ever
allowed me to get hold of my
bike at night-time and on any
rainy days throughout the camp!
Now in 2007…
I have always believed that
Denmark is more or less a flat
country, and that, most of all,
Denmark is a safe and friendly
place to wander around as a
backpacker-beginner (though
after the trip I have definitely
changed my mind for that,
Denmark is not a flat land at
all!). That was then-- with these
two pieces of impression; I
embarked on a 3-week biking
journey with my friend all the
way through the Southern Jutland
to Skagen in the Northern
Jutland in the summer of 2007.
“We’ve been thinking
about this, just
take Cabin No.4…”
Shortly after we had started our
journey from Gråsten, the weather
turned bad. It was all the
way from Højer to Skæbæk that
the sky was raining cats and
dogs and the wind was blowing
so fiercely that we were almost
being stopped by it. In weather
like this, we had no time to stop
and no time to lose, but to get
to a nearby campsite as quickly
as possible with our non-stop
“self-driven motor”. We were
in drowning wetness, freezing
cold and were starving severely
throughout the way, desperately
longing for hot dishes and
a shelter. Arriving at the campsite
in Skæbæk, the owners of
the campsite just could not help
laughing out at our situation and
told us to use the washing and
drying machine for free in order
to “get alive”. However, the
rain had never ceased to pour
down, and we could never be
able to pitch our tent. But then
the most moving words came
THE
out from the owners telling us
just to take one of the empty cabins.
Throughout the journey,
we always came across so many
nice people who offered us help
even without us asking for it.
Though the chance of getting
bad weather is more or less as
high as the chance of meeting
nice people, the friendliness and
the kindness of people became
one of the most unforgettable
impressions, we had throughout
the journey (apart from
the not-so-nice weather…).
Denmark is not a
flat land at all!
I am now totally convinced that
Denmark is not a flat country,
and I am sure that my leg muscles
will also strongly agree to
that. It was all the way from
Skæbæk to Aalborg, lasting
for half of our journey, that the
“ups and downs” seems to be
never ending. As an amateur
like me, the wind blowing in
opposite direction has already
forbidden me to go forward in a
straight line, and not to mention
