for 2.-4. klasse.
What is Fastelavn
So what’s all this about?
Fastelavn this year falls on February the 22 nd
– a day of excess and celebrations before the
40 days fast of Lent, then comes Easter.
Christianity in Denmark sure ain’t what it used
to be in the old days; what with churches being
closed up for good across the land, and most
emphasis seeming to be placed on getting gifts
at confirmation ceremonies or at Christmas.
But It seems as if this peculiar Danish festival
has more roots in pagan times anyway, a time
when on this day geese had their heads ripped
off and their dead bodies were used to whack
the living
daylights out of a cat stuck in a wooden barrel.
These days Danes have cleaned up their act on
the cat and goose whacking front though, but
contemporary Fastelavn still whiffs of village
life and ducking stools.
The auspicious day begins with kids dressingup
in fancy dress, then waking their parents
by bashing their bed with fastelavnris (a small
bunch of spring twigs, decorated with feathers
and sweeties) and then by being irritating all
day.
The day culminates with trick-or-treating, followed
by beating the living daylights out of a
