Monasteries and art
– war and cult
Skanderborg Museum runs no less than five different museums in the Lakelands
which unfold the fascinating local history.
• The Museum at Adelgade in Skanderborg: Special exhibition of the “Secrets of the
bog” and the excavations of “Alken Enge”.
• The Museum at Gl. Rye Mill: A good introduction to the local history including the
Second World War refugee camp in the former Gl. Rye airfield.
• The Museum of Øm Abbey: Ruins of a monastery and a convent garden with
medical herbs, a display of mediaeval skulls from the local hospital, a fine little
shop and the annual “Food and Beer” festival in august.
• The Freshwater Museum in Ry: Free admittance to a display of the wildlife living
in the Danish lakes and streams.
• The Skanderborg Bunkers: Different bunkers revealing traces of the Second
World War.
Visit Vestermølle in Skanderborg. Here you can learn about the development of the
agricultural trade in Denmark and have a chat with one of the voluntary millers. And
you can also enjoy a tasteful lunch in the cosy restaurant.
Creativity can be found everywhere in the fertile Lakeland landscape.
We also recommend that you pay Midtjyllands Kunst Center in Bryrup a visit – they
house the largest gallery in Denmark.
Situated only 24 kilometres from Skanderborg you will find AROS Aarhus Art
Museum – an impressive 9 storeyed museum with modern art of high international
quality.
In Skanderborg Culture House you will find a large variety of events throughout
the year – enjoy art exhibitions, different types of music, theatre performances and
entertainment. They also have a great café, tourist information and a cosy cinema.
From the Lake District to the Lakelands:
Friendly, quiet and cool chic
Susan McGahan, Heather Fielding and Gillian DeLong
from the United Kingdom settled in Ry for ten days. They
made a house swap so while they enjoyed the Danish
Lakelands, a family from Ry stayed in their house in the
English Lake District.
– Apart from your icons of design we didn’t really know an
awful lot about Denmark. But obviously we heard that you are the
happiest people in the world. And from what we have seen so far this
seems to be true. Everyone is extremely kind and the area is peaceful, they tell.
The three friends are interested in history and after only a few days in the
area they had already visited “Den gamle By” and “Kvindemuseet” in Aarhus
and the local museum at Gl. Rye Mill. Add to that a jazz concert at the Ry
harbour.
– A friend told us that Denmark is “cool chic” and we can totally agree to
that. And by the way – we have discovered that it is such a pleasure to drive in
Denmark without being honked at. At the moment the inside of our car is noisier
than the outside!
