Parallel dazu hat sich die Region Rostock als Wissenschafts-
und Kulturstandort etabliert. Und die

Wofür steht die Region Rostock? Sie umfasst das
Gebiet der Hansestadt Rostock sowie die Landkreise
Bad Doberan und Güstrow mit rund 432.000
Einwohnern und fast 25.000 zumeist mittelständischen
Unternehmen. Landschaftlich wird die Region
sowohl durch ihre direkte Lage an der Ostsee als
auch durch das Hügelland der Mecklenburgischen
Schweiz geprägt. Hanseatische und ländliche Traditionen,

Nach einem grundlegenden Neustart infolge der
politischen Wende von 1989 befindet sich die
Wirtschaft in der Region Rostock auf gutem Kurs.
Aus ehemaligen Kombinatsbetrieben hervorgegangen
oder neu gegründet, ist eine diversifizierte
mittelständische Unternehmenslandschaft entstanden.
Technologische Spitzenleistungen aus
der Region Rostock sind auf überregionalen

Der Autor wurde 1952 in Bremen geboren, wo
er nach Ausbildung und Tätigkeit im Schifffahrtsgewerbe
Betriebswirtschaft, Ökonomie
und Weiterbildung studierte. Nach Promotion
und Tätigkeit in internationalen Austauschprojekten
ist er seit 1991 bei der Industrie- und
Handelskammer Rostock tätig, zunächst als
Leiter des Euro Info Centres und seit 1998
als stellv. Hauptgeschäftsführer. Bis Ende 2001
war er zudem kommissarischer Geschäftsführer
der Marketing-Initiative – Region Rostock-
Güstrow-Bad Doberan.
The author was born in Bremen in 1952, where
he studied Business Administration, Economics
and Continuing Education after first learning
a trade and working in the shipping business.
After completing his doctorate and working
in international exchange projects he has
worked for the Rostock Chamber of Industry
and Commerce since 1991. There he was initially
head of the Euro Info Centre, and has
been Deputy Manager since 1998. Up to the
end of 2001 he was the temporary General
manager of the Rostock Region – Güstrow-Bad
Doberan Marketing Initiative.
Hochschulen, Forschungseinrichtungen und Technologiezentren

business and overseas trading centre in
north-eastern Germany. At the same time the Rostock
region has established itself as a
science and business location. And
course has been set for the future.
What does the Rostock region stand
for? It comprises the Hanseatic City of
Rostock, the Counties of Bad Doberan
and Güstrow with 432,000 inhabitants
and almost 25,000 mostly medium-sized
companies. The region's

immediate proximity to the Baltic

Economic Competence
After a completely new start in the wake of the political
change of 1989 the Rostock economy is now
on the right track. Whether former collective combines
or newly established businesses, a diversified
medium-sized commercial landscape has
emerged. Top technological achievements from
the Rostock region are sought after in other German
markets. Great efforts promoting vocational
qualifications have contributed to human resources
being oriented to the requirements of the
future. The region's excellent areas of economic
competence include:

Tertiary education, research institutes and technology
centres are important and competent partners
of the economy. Solutions to problems are

Internationale Verbindungen
Die Region Rostock ist weltoffen. Handel und
Schifffahrt haben ihr seit jeher einen internationalen
Charakter verliehen.
Durch schnelle Fährverbindungen nach Skandinavien
und in die baltischen Länder ist der Seehafen
Rostock ein interessanter Partner der Ex- und Importwirtschaft.
Im kombinierten Ladungsverkehr
werden z. B. Güter von Italien über Rostock nach
Skandinavien verschifft; oder Papier aus Finnland
über Rostock nach Tschechien.
Zahlreiche Kreuzfahrtschiffe steuern jährlich Warnemünde
an. Dabei gewinnt neben der Bundeshauptstadt
Berlin auch die Region Rostock selbst
zusehends das Interesse des internationalen Publikums.
Und in ausgehender Richtung dient der
Flughafen Rostock-Laage als Sprungbrett zu südländischen
Reisezielen.

ländische Unternehmen sind in der Region Rostock
präsent und tragen maßgeblich zur Wertschöpfung
bei. Die Eröffnung einer mehrsprachigen Grundschulklasse
ist in Vorbereitung. Es passt in dieses
Bild, dass heute die Mehrheit der Honorarkonsulate
in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern hier ansässig ist.
Mit der Ausrichtung der Internationalen Gartenbauausstellung
(IGA) 2003 in Rostock wird die internationale
Verankerung weiter zunehmen. Das
in jedem Sommer stattfindende Traditionsseglertreffen
HanseSail ist schon heute ein internationaler
Publikumsmagnet.
Kulturelle Vielfalt
Die Region Rostock verfügt über einen hohen Freizeitwert.
Eine vielfältige Palette von Erholungs-,
Sport- und Kulturangeboten steht für erstklassige
Lebensart.
An der Küste laden exzellente Segelreviere und
Strände von höchster EU-Qualität ein. Im seenund
waldreichen Binnenland erwarten den Be-
sucher erstklassige Schlosshotels und Golfanlagen.
Freunde des Reitsports werden sich hier
ebenfalls wohl fühlen. Aber auch die Anhänger
des runden Leders kommen auf ihre Kosten. Als
wichtiger Imageträger der Region ist der FC Hansa
Rostock seit vielen Jahren in der Ersten Bundesliga
vertreten.
Eine interessante Reise durch verschiedene historische
Epochen verspricht ein Besuch des Güstrower
Schlosses, des Doberaner Münsters oder der
Rostocker Marienkirche. Ein Ausflug in das Güstrower
Atelierhaus des Bildhauers und Grafikers
Ernst Barlach gibt einen Einblick in Leben und
Werk des großen Künstlers. Das Große im Kleinen
entdecken – hierfür gibt es in der Region Rostock
zahlreiche gute Möglichkeiten.
Klassische Musik in historischem oder modernem
Ambiente genießen – auch dies gehört zu den
kulturellen Highlights der Region. Die Rostocker
Hochschule für Musik und Theater hat nicht nur
im gesamten Ostseeraum einen exzellenten Ruf.
Musikstudenten aus zahlreichen Ländern werden
hier ausgebildet. Einige erhielten Auszeichnungen
bei internationalen Musikwettbewerben.
Eine starke Region
In der Region Rostock ziehen alle gesellschaftlichen
Gruppen an einem Strang. Unternehmen, Kammern,
Verbände Hochschulen, Gebietskörperschaften
und Privatpersonen haben sich im Frühjahr
2001 in der „Region Rostock – Güstrow – Bad Doberan
Marketing-Initiative e.V“ zusammengeschlossen,
um die Zukunft gemeinsam zu gestalten. Die
Initiative setzt Zeichen für die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb
der Region sowie die Präsentation des
Standortes nach außen. Ihr Engagement ist Symbol
für die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Nordostens. Mit ihren
Projekten trägt sie dazu bei, die Leistungs- und
Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Region Rostock in einem
größer werdenden Europa zu sichern.
Das Regionalmarketing richtet sich einerseits an
interessierte Unternehmen, indem es die örtlichen
Standortvorteile herausstellt: die Einbindung
des Raumes in überregionale technologische
und verkehrlichen Entwicklungsachsen, die
Kompetenz des Faktors Humanressourcen, das
wissenschaftliche Umfeld und den bereits hohen
Grad an internationaler Vernetzung. Andererseits
richtet sich das Regionalmarketing aber auch
an auswärtige Arbeitskräfte und deren Familien,
die für eine Ansiedlung gewonnen werden sollen,
oder an in- und ausländische Touristen, die eingeladen
werden, Städte und Landschaften im
Dreieck Rostock–Güstrow–Bad Doberan kennen
zu lernen. ■

International Connections
The Rostock region is cosmopolitan. Since time
immemorial trade and shipping have given it an
international character. Through rapid ferry links
with Scandinavia and the Baltic countries the port
of Rostock is an important overseas trading partner.
Freight from Italy is shipped in combined
mode via Rostock to Scandinavia; or paper from
Finland via Rostock to the Czech Republic. Countless
cruise ships make for Warnemünde very year.
Besides Berlin the Rostock region also visibly attracts
the interest of the international public. And
in the opposite direction the airport in Rostock-
Laage serves as a springboard to destinations further
south for travellers.
The existence of countless foreign investors underscores
the quality of the region. A total of 40
foreign companies are located in Rostock and
make a big contribution to the creation of value.
The opening of a multi-lingual primary school
class is in preparation. Appropriately, the majority
of Honorary Consulates in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
is located here today.
With the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in
Rostock in 2003 this international orientation will
continue to increase. The traditional yachting meeting
HanseSail, which takes place every summer, is
already a magnet for the international public.
The Rostock Region
Cultural Variety
The Rostock region is very attractive as a place
where leisure activities can be indulged in. A wide
range of recreational, sporting and cultural attractions
is evidence of a high standard lifestyle. Excellent
yachting areas and beaches that meet the
highest standards in the European Union beckon
visitors. Further inland there are many lakes and
forests, and first-class hotels and golf-links await
their guests. Horse-riding enthusiasts are wellcatered
for here. But soccer-players get their money's
worth here as well. The FC Hansa Rostock
soccer club is one of the important badges of the

Enjoying classical music in an historical or modern
atmosphere – this is also one of the region’s
cultural highlights. The Rostock Academy of Music
and Theatre has an excellent reputation – not
only in the whole Baltic region – music students
from many countries receive their training here.
Some have even won awards in international
competitions.
A Strong Region
In the Rostock region people from all social
groups pull together. In Spring 2001 companies,
Chambers of Industry and the Trades, professional
associations, institutes of tertiary education, regional
authorities and private citizens got together
to form the “Rostock Region – Güstrow – Bad
Doberan Marketing Initiative e.V” in order to
shape the future of the region together. The initiative
is a sign of cooperation within the region and
a means of publicity to the rest of the world. Its degree
of involvement is a symbol for the region's
ability to cope with the future of the northeast and
its projects contribute to the preservation of the
Rostock region’s efficiency and competitiveness in
a growing Europe.
On the one hand the regional marketing campaign
is directed at interested companies by
demonstrating the advantages of various locations
within the region – the inclusion of the area
in national technological and transport development
axes, the competence of its human resources,
the scientific environment and already
high level of networking with the rest of the world.

with the cities and the landscapes in the
