Die Walter Klein GmbH & Co. KG, Wuppertal
(WKW), ist ein mittelständischer Automobilzulieferer
und produziert in 15 Betriebsstätten
und Niederlassungen weltweit Zier- und Funktionsteile
vornehmlich für Fahrzeuge der Premiumklasse.
In der Unternehmensgruppe sind nahezu
2.600 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt.
Das 1940 in Wuppertal gegründete Unternehmen
Walter Klein ist als Zulieferer für die Automobilindustrie,
insbesondere für den PKW-Bereich,
tätig. Neben Herstellung und Veredlung von
Strangpressprofilen aus Aluminium und der Bearbeitung
von Stahlblechen gehört das Kunststoffspritzgießen
sowie die Kunststoffextrusion
zum Know-how-Spektrum des Unternehmens.
Nahezu alle namhaften europäischen Automobilhersteller
zählen zum Kundenstamm von Walter
Klein. In den weltweit tätigen Werken werden
Zier- und Funktionsteile, Verdeck- und Strukturbauteile
sowie Motorenkomponenten und Wärmetauscherprofile
hergestellt. Neben dem Hauptwerkstoff
Aluminium dienen Stahl und Kunststoff
zur Fertigung dieses anspruchsvollen Produktportfolios.
Der Schwiegersohn des Namensgebers und Gründers,
Herr Gert Mayer, lenkt als geschäftsführender
Gesellschafter seit nunmehr 50 Jahren erfolgreich
die Geschicke des Familienunternehmens.
Nach dem Tod von Walter Klein im Jahr 1962 übernahm
Gert Mayer die Unternehmensführung alleinverantwortlich.
Das Unternehmen wuchs seit
seinem Eintritt konstant – damals waren dort
20 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt –, die Ausrichtung als
kompetenter Automobilzulieferer wurde konsequent
auf- und ausgebaut. „Eines unserer ersten
Zierteile aus Aluminium war die Bauchbinde für
den ersten Pontonwagen von Daimler. Unser da-

maliger Betriebsleiter war früher Flugzeugbauer
bei Juncker gewesen, und der wusste, wie man Aluminiumblech-
und Strangpressteile verarbeitet.
Das war der Einstieg ins Zierteilgeschäft und
natürlich auch beim Daimler. Aber auch andere
Hersteller, wie VW, Karmann und DKW, wurden
von uns beliefert. Zu dieser Zeit haben wir die gesamten
Fensterrahmen für DKW aus Aluminium
gefertigt.“
Fortan entwickelte sich das Unternehmen WKW
kontinuierlich weiter: Für die Zierteile von VW
wurde der Betrieb in Bad Laasphe/Banfe aufgebaut.
„Ich hatte immer einen hervorragenden Kontakt
zu unseren Kunden. Einerseits weil mir bei
der mechanischen und chemischen Bearbeitung
von Aluminiumprofilen kaum jemand etwas vormachen
konnte. Andererseits habe ich immer zu

meinem Wort gestanden und nie jemanden übervorteilt.“
Vorausschauend als Alternative zum
hochwertigen Aluminium wurde bei WKW auch
über Kunststoff nachgedacht, speziell im Produktsektor
Seitenschutzleisten – WKW-KTR in Rüthi in
der Schweiz war geboren. Mit den entsprechenden
Fachleuten vor Ort wurde eine Kunststoffspritzgussfertigung
aufgebaut, „und in diesem Jahr
haben wir eine neue Fertigungshalle mit 4.000 m 2
eingeweiht und die Fläche der Bürogebäude verdoppelt,
da der Platz in der Produktion und der
Verwaltung nicht mehr ausreichte.“ Die Fertigung
der koextrudierten Teile bei Silvatrim S.A.M. in
Monaco habe man von Nobel Plastique übernommen.
Und die Blendenfertigung von Happich sowie
auch von Ymos läuft seit vielen Jahren unter
der Flagge der WKW-SUMA GmbH. „In Namibia
gibt es dann auch noch ein Unternehmen unter
meiner Regie, die Global Polymer Industries. Diese
Firma stellt geschäumte Kunststoffe u. a. für
Fischkästen und den Baubereich her.“
Der Fortbestand des Familienunternehmens ist
auch schon geregelt. Seit einigen Jahren ist ebenfalls
als geschäftsführender Gesellschafter der
Sohn von Gert Mayer, Herr Christian Mayer, im
Unternehmen tätig. Vater und Sohn werden bei
der Bewältigung ihrer vielfältigen Aufgaben durch
einen weiteren Geschäftsführer, Herrn Peter Kruft,
tatkräftig unterstützt. ■

medium-size business sector and produces in 15
works and branches worldwide decorative and
functional parts mainly for vehicles of the premium
class. Almost 2,600 employees work for the
group.
Walter Klein Company was established in 1940 as
supplier to the automobile industry, particularly
catering for passenger cars. Besides manufacturing
and processing of extrusion press profiles
made of aluminium and the treatment of steel
panels, the company’s spectrum of know-how
comprises plastic injection moulding and plastic
extrusion. Almost all renowned European automobile
producers are regular customers of Walter
Klein. In our globally active works we produce decorative
and functional parts, parts for convertible
tops and structural components as well as engine
components and heat exchanger profiles. To meet
the demands of our ambitious product portfolio
steel and plastic is used in manufacturing besides
aluminium, our main material.
Mr. Gert Mayer, son in law of the founder after
whom the company was named, manages successfully
the fate of the family enterprise for 50
years now as managing partner. After Walter Klein
deceased in 1962, Gert Mayer took over the company’s
management in sole responsibility. Since
his entry, the company grew constantly, 20 employees
worked here at that time, and its focus as
competent automobile supplier was consistently
developed and expanded. “One of our first decorative
parts of aluminium was the blurb for the
first pontoon wagon made by Daimler. Our former
plant manager had been in aircraft construction
before with Juncker, and he knew how to process
aluminium sheets and extrusion press parts. That’s
how we started in the business of decorative parts

and of course also with Daimler. But also other
producers like VW, Karmann and DKW were supplied
by us. At that time we used to produce all
window frames for DKW from aluminium.”
From this time on, WKW continued growing further:
the work in Bad Laasphe/Banfe was erected
for decorative parts for VW. “I always had excellent
contact to our customers. On the one hand, because
hardly anyone could fool me when it came
to mechanical and chemical processing of aluminium
profiles. On the other, I always kept my
word and never cheated on anyone.”
With foresight and as alternative to using highquality
aluminium, also thoughts about using
plastic emerged at WKW, especially in the product
sector of side guard strips. That’s when WKW-KTR
in Rüthi, Switzerland, was born. With relevant local
experts a plastic injection moulding plant was
built up “and this year we inaugurated a new production
hall of 4,000 m 2 and doubled the area of
office buildings, because space in production
works and administration had become too small”.
The manufacture of co-extruded parts at Silvatrim
S.A.M. in Monaco has been taken over from
Nobel Plastique. Moreover, the production of
vanes formerly made by Happich and Ymos is now
also running under the flagship of WKW-SUMA
GmbH for many years. “There is another company
in Namibia that I direct, namely Global Polymer
Industries. This firm produces foam synthetics
for instance for fish boxes and the construction
industry.”
The continued existence of the family enterprise
has also been arranged. Mr. Christian Mayer, son
of Gert Mayer, is working in the company as managing
partner now for several years. Both father
and son are coping with managing the numerous
tasks through the committed support of an additional
managing director, Herr Peter Kruft. ■
