The Basel Christmas market and a city tour
through the Christmas city of Basel
28 November – 23 December 2013, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz
During Advent, Basel assumes a unique charm. The romantic Christmas
market is located in the heart of the city centre, nestled among the
Christmas decorations adorning the historic Old Town. It is considered one
of the prettiest and largest in Switzerland. Anyone looking for gift ideas
will be inspired by the huge array of products and the fairytale atmosphere.
And plenty of culinary delights are also on offer, be it a cup of mulled
wine, waffles or “Basler Läckerli” biscuits. Visitors can browse the wares of
numerous traders and artisans every day from 11 am to 8 pm at both
locations.
Christmas in Basel will be officially opened at 6.30 pm on 28 November
2013, when the city’s Governing President, Dr Guy Morin, switches on the
Christmas lights at the Münsterplatz. At the same time, visitors will be able
to admire the splendid illuminations adorning the numerous Christmas
trees that line the streets of Basel.
On 30 November and 7, 14 and 21 December 2013, Basel Tourism is
offering a guided tour through the Christmas city. On this tour, as well as
encountering twinkling lights, Christmas trees and angels, you will also
hear numerous stories and learn lots of interesting facts about Christmas
customs. Tours in German only. During the run-up to Christmas, many
events and various special exhibitions in the city’s museums further enrich
its cultural scene.
