Designer
Im gegensatz zu individuellen polstermöbeln ist die Entwicklung eines kubistischen polstermöbelbaukastens
nicht nur eine konzeptionelle, sondern vor allem auch eine programmatische Herausforderung.
Sämtliche Teile wie Sitzkissen, Rückenkissen, Seiten- bzw. Armteile und unterbauten müssen so
gestaltet sein, dass sie beim beliebigen Zusammenstellen eines individuellen Sitzmöbels immer
perfekte, ästhetische Verhältnisse zueinander haben. Zusammen mit den zugeordneten Trägerteilen
wie Bügel, Füße, Sockel, Rahmen oder Drehteller muss die komposition am Schluss sitzen, proportional
überzeugen und begeistern. Mit ATHENA ist uns das gelungen.
The development of Cubist cushioned furniture kit is not only conceptionally, but also programmatically
challenging in contrast to individual cushioned furniture. All of the parts, be it the cushions
for seating, the sides e.g the armrests und the base frame, must be designed in such a way that they
can be contstucted into individual seating arrangements which are perfectly and aesthetically related
to each other. The composition, together with the allocated structures such as the bracket, the feet,
the base, the frame and the circular shelf, must fit proportionally, convincingly and inspirationally.
We have made this possible with ATHENA.

gewünscht hat, die die grenzen des Standards sprengt, für den ist ELIOS ein genuss.
At first glance ELIOS does not reveal to viewer what’s hidden inside of it: the very great art of surprise. The new sofa model is a real treasure in
terms of flexibility, functionality and comfort. To anyone who has ever wanted a feel-good island for daily life beyond the limits of standards,
ELIOS is a pleasure.

Mit gästen gemütlich beisammensitzen, alleine oder zu zweit entspannen, lesen oder
arbeiten … alles ist möglich. Aus einem normalen Sofa wird mit wenigen Handgriffen
ein Doppel-Relaxmöbel. Ermöglicht wird dies durch die spezielle Schwenksitztechnik,
mit deren Hilfe sich die Sitzfläche um 90° drehen lässt und so zur komfortablen
Beinauflage wird.
Sit comfortably together with guests, relax alone or as a couple, read or work … everything
is possible. With a few simple steps a normal sofa is changed into a piece of
double relaxing furniture. This is possible due to the special swivel seat mechanism
by which the seat can be rotated by 90° and thus turns into a comfortable leg rest.

In Sekundenschnelle lässt sich der obere – in Normalstellung nach hinten
abgewinkelte – Teil des weichen Rückenkissens zur vorher unsichtbaren
kopfstütze aufstellen. Die breiten Armlehnen laden zum entspannten
Beisammensitzen ein, bieten darüber hinaus jedoch auch dem Laptop
oder pad ausreichend platz, die sowohl beruflich als auch privat zu
ständigen Begleitern geworden sind.
Dank weiterer Module (Eck-, Rundeck- und Erweiterungselement) lassen
sich individuell abgestimmte Sofaformen komponieren, die wie selbstverständlich
mit dem persönlichen Anspruch und Bedarf harmonisieren.

seine vielfältigen Funktionen auf charmant zurückhaltende Art und-
Weise verhüllt und erst auf den zweiten Blick offenbart – Staunfaktor

ELIOS has even more surprising versatility to offer. Within seconds
the upper – in normal position to the rear angled – part of the
soft back cushion can be set up to a previously invisible headrest.
The wide armrests invite to relax and sit together and also provide
enough space for laptop or pad, which have turned into constant
professional and personal companions.
By further modules (corner, round corner and extension elements)
individually tailored sofa forms can be composed, which harmonize
naturally with personal demands and requirements.
ELIOS is a distinctive, restrained and timeless-designed sofa that
conceals its multiple functions in a charmingly reserved way and
reveals them only at second glance – astonishment guaranteed.

THOMAS ALTHAuS
Thomas Althaus, 1957 in Düsseldorf geboren, lebt und arbeitet in der
nordrhein-westfälischen Landeshauptstadt und auf Mallorca.
Nach dem Abitur und einer Handwerkslehre beginnt er 1980 mit dem
Studium der Innenarchitektur in Düsseldorf bei Ellen Birkelbach und
schliesst es 1987 mit besonderer Auszeichnung ab.
Thomas Althaus, born in Düsseldorf 1957, lives and works in the
North-Rhine Westfalian Capital and Mallorca. After high school
graduation and a craft apprenticeship, he commenced studies for
interior design with Ellen Birkelbach in Düsseldorf in 1980 and
concluded with honors in 1987.
Nach jahren freier Mitarbeit in Architekturbüros und im Designbüro kurt
Ziehmer gründen er und partner Volker Laprell 1989 das Designbüro
Laprell-Althaus (bis 1994). Seit 1995 entwirft Thomas Althaus für namhafte
Herstellerfirmen in ganz Europa. Von ihm entworfene produkte werden rund
um den globus vertrieben. Zahlreiche Auszeichnungen wurden verliehen,
darunter red dot, Roter punkt, Best of Neon Con / Chicago.
After years of freelance work in various architectural offices and Design
Office kurt Ziehmer in 1989 him and his partner established the Design
Office Laprell-Althaus until 1994. Since 1995 Thomas Althaus designs
for major manufacturing companies throughout Europe. products
designed by him are sold around the globe. Numerous awards were
presented including red dot, Roter punkt, Best of Neon Con / Chicago.
2001 war er am Entwurf eines privathauses in Doha / katar beteiligt, der
anlässlich der Architektur Biennale in Venedig 2002 ausgestellt wurde.
Seit 2001 arbeitet er in kooperation mit seiner Frau, Innenarchitektin
Brigitte Lichtner, im Bereich Möbeldesign und Innenarchitektur.
In 2001 he participated in the drafting of a private house in Doha /
Qatar, which was exhibited at the Architecture Biennale in Venice
2002. Since 2001 he has worked in cooperation with his wife, interior
designer Brigitte Lichtner, in furniture design and interior architecture.

Seine zahlreichen Möbelentwürfe zeichnen sich neben besonderer ästhetik
durch hohe Flexibilität und Funktion aus. Seine Entwurfsphilosophie:
Ein gutes Möbel sollte so gestaltet sein, dass der Benutzer seine Individualität
in das produkt oder seine Anwendung mit einbringen kann.
Möbel sind die kleinsten mobilen Elemente der Architektur. Sie sollen
bestenfalls funktional dienlich sein, sich aber ästhetisch und behutsam in
seine umgebung einordnen.

Innenarchitekt und Designer gerald Brandstätter ist ein wahrer kosmopolit: Seine Mutter stammt aus
Holland, sein Vater ist Österreicher und er selbst lebt und arbeitet in der Schweiz.
gerald Brandstätter studierte an der kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich und später am Art Center College
of Design in pasadena, uSA.
Interior architect and designer gerald Brandstätter is a real cosmopolitan. His mother is from
Holland, his father is Austrian, and he himself lives and works in Switzerland. gerald Brandstätter
studied at the art school in Zurich and later at the Art Center College of Design in pasadena, u.S.A.
Im jahr 1994 gründete er in Zürich sein Designatelier CONZEpT-B, in dem deutscher Rationalismus
und italienische Eleganz mit Schweizer präzision verschmelzen. Von Zürich aus arbeitet gerald
Brandstätter vornehmlich für die Möbelindustrie. Seine kunden stammen aus Holland, Österreich,
Deutschland, Italien und der Schweiz.
In 1994 he established his design studio CONCEpT-B in Zurich, where german rationalism and
Italian elegance merge with Swiss precision. From Zurich, gerald Brandstätter works primarily for
the furniture industry. His customers come from Holland, Austria, germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Circumferential armrests protect and embrace at the same time, the softly rounded areas
reinforce the comfortable feeling of being at home.
The new model ARTEMIS combines feminine shapes and masculine power: The clearly
defined silhouette, the unique rounded contours and the perfectly harmonized geometry
make ARTEMIS a distinctive seat, deck and lounge furniture.
Neben der eigentlichen Entwurfsarbeit als Möbeldesigner ist Brandstätter
auch im Bereich Messepräsentationen oder Art Direction für Fotoshootings
tätig. Zudem unterrichtet er an Fachhochschulen und ist journalistisch aktiv.
Besides the actual design work as a furniture designer, Brandstätter is also
in the fields of trade fair presentations and art direction of photo shootings.
He also teaches at colleges and is journalistically active.

Der international renommierte Designer lebt in Schondorf am Ammersee und arbeitet
für namhafte unternehmen der europäischen Möbelindustrie.
Nach einer Lehre als Möbeltischler und einem Innenarchitekturstudium startete er den
Vertrieb seiner eigenen polstermöbel. In der Folgezeit gründete jan Armgardt einen
Möbelversand, der eigene Entwürfe vertrieb, bis er sich schließlich 1974 als Designer
selbständig machte. 1985 tat er sich mit seinem Freund und kollegen prof. Auwi
Stübbe in Coburg zusammen, um die Designer Collegium gmbH – eine Firma, die sich
auf Raumentwurf, Möbelentwurf und Industriedesign spezialisierte – zu gründen.
This internationally renowned designer lives in Schondorf on the Ammersee and works
for well-known companies in the european furniture industry.
After training as a cabinet maker during his interior design studies, he began marketing
his own upholstered furniture. Subsequently, he started up his own furniture distribution
which marketed his own designs and eventually set up on his own as a designer
in 1974. In 1985 he and a friend and colleague, prof. Auwi Stubbe, founded the
company Designer Collegium gmbH in Coburg, which specialised in spacial, furniture
and industrial design.
Es folgten Experimente mit graupappe und papier, die
seinen Anspruch, Möbel nachhaltig und ökologisch zu
produzieren, unterstreichen und aus denen in den letzten
25 jahren mehrere Möbelzyklen (alles unikate) entstanden. 66
Eine Vielzahl von Einzelausstellungen im In- und Ausland
sowie Ausstellungsbeteiligungen auf allen kontinenten
unterstreichen seinen Status als international angesehener
gestalter. Für seine Entwürfe erhielt er weit über 40 preise
und Auszeichnungen.
Von 1992 bis 1996 war Armgardt Lehrbeauftragter an der
Fachhochschule Coburg. Von 1997 bis 1999 lehrte er an
der Staatlichen korbfachschule Lichtenfels, 1998 folgte
die Ernennung zum Vertretungsprofessor, 2001 wurde
er zum Honorarprofessor im Fachbereich Design an der
Fachhochschule Aachen berufen.

Such a symbiosis evolved from the cooperation of ARTANOVA with Swiss musician philippe Chrétien. His emotional and metaphysical-sensual
saxophone sounds provide the perfect soundtrack for relaxing hours on the beloved sofa. Both the music and
the seating furniture are unique compositions which ensnare body and mind and abduct you to another world.

Schon als kind begeisterte er sich sowohl für die Musik als auch für den umgang mit

Nach dem Besuch des gymnasiums und der kunstgewerbeschule in Basel absolvierte
er bis 1982 erfolgreich ein Studium des Industrial Design Engineering in London ...
eine Stadt, deren unverwechselbarer Rhythmus seinen weiteren Lebensweg wesentlich
mitbestimmen sollte. Denn hier ist er seiner Liebe zum Tenorsaxophon verfallen.

A MEN WITH MANY TALENTS
philippe Chrétien is a passionately creative person in many ways. As a child he was
already enthusiastic about both music and the use of tools and materials.
After attending high school and the School of Applied Arts in Basel until 1982, he
completed studies of Industrial Design Engineering in London … a city whose
distinctive rhythm should considerably influence his future life, because that’s where
he succumbed to his love for Tenor Saxophone.

Doch bevor die Musik endgültig den Takt angab, trat er seine erste Anstellung in
kalifornien an. Nach dieser amerikanischen Erfahrung zog es ihn wieder in die
Heimat, wo er in Zürich 1990 gemeinsam mit Christophe Apothéloz die eigene Firma
Industrial Designers gründete.
Von der Idee über die Strategie bis zum fertigen produkt entstehen seither vielfach
ausgezeichnete Designobjekte, die die Einfachheit über den überschwang stellen,
sich analytisch an der Funktion orientieren und physisch sinnvolle Lösungen bieten.
Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Entwicklung eigener produkte, doch auch Auftragsarbeiten
für international renommierte unternehmen werden erfolgreich umgesetzt.

But before the music finally determined the tact, he took up his first job in California.
After this American experience he moved back to his homeland. Together with
Christophe Apothéloz he established his own company Industrial Designers in Zurich
in 1990. Ever since multiple awarded design objects emerged from the idea via
strategy to the final product, which give priority to simplicity rather than exuberance,
are based on analytic function and provide physically sensible solutions. The main
focus is on the development of own products, but also contract works for internationally
renowned companies are carried out successfully.

Frei von jeglichem kommerziellen Druck hat philippe Chrétien während
der gesamten Zeit internationale konzerterfahrungen gesammelt und
mit namhaften Musikern und Djs der unterschiedlichsten Stilrichtungen
zusammengearbeitet. So entstand sein ganz persönlicher und unverwechselbarer
Ton. jack kreisberg (Blue Note, New York) brachte es einmal
auf den punkt: „He‘s got a killer sound!“
Free from any commercial pressure during the entire time philippe
Chrétien has gained international concert experience by working
together with leading musicians and Djs of different styles.
The result was his very personal and distinctive sound. kreisberg
(Blue Note, New York) brought it to the point. “He’s got the killer
sound!”
Dieser ganz spezielle Sound begeisterte auch Stéphanie Horst, die
eines seiner Solokonzerte besuchte ... ein Treffen mit Folgen! Denn
sehr schnell stand für beide fest, dass die entspannt sinnliche
Atmosphäre der Musik von philippe Chrétien ideal zu den ARTANOVA
Sitzmöbeln passt. Das Resultat war die CD „Composed for special
moments“ – eine tongewordene Einladung, den Alltag einmal hinter
sich zu lassen und solch ganz spezielle Momente mit allen Sinnen
zu geniessen.

one of his solo concerts … a meeting with consequences! Because
very quickly it was clear to both of them that the relaxed and
sensual atmosphere of philippe Chrétien’s music would match with

um ein solches gebäude handelt es sich beim Seehotel Waldstätterhof in
Brunnen. Majestätisch am ufer des Vierwaldstättersees gelegen, hat es bis
heute nichts von seiner Faszination verloren, der schon die ersten Besucher
im jahre 1870 erlegen sind.
Such a building is the Seehotel Waldstätterhof in Brunnen. Situated majestically
on the banks of Lake Lucerne, it has not lost any of its fascination
which already attracted the first visitors in 1870.
WENN ARCHITEkTuR DIE SINNE SCHäRFT
Architekt johann Meyer hat in den jahren 1869/1870 ein gebäude nach französischen Vorbildern
erschaffen, welches das eigene Empfinden für perfektion, Harmonie und Schönheit nachhaltig prägt.
Wer wie wir ganz in der Nähe dieses faszinierenden Hotels lebt und arbeitet, kann sich dessen Charme
kaum entziehen. Welchen Einfluss das Seehotel Waldstätterhof auf die philosophie und produkte von
ARTANOVA hat, ist letztlich nicht mess- und nachvollziehbar. Fest steht, dass dieses einmalige Erstklasshaus

Am Sonntag, den 17. juli 1870, wurde der Waldstätterhof in Brunnen eröffnet. Das moderne Erstklasshaus
von Fridolin Fassbind-Steinauer umfasste damals 115 gastzimmer mit 170 Betten. Daran
hat sich bis heute nicht viel verändert. Zwar gibt es den Damen- und Musiksalon sowie das Raucherund
Billiardzimmer nicht mehr – dennoch erinnert noch vieles an damals. Das gilt vor allem für die
prachtvollen Säle, die die Besucher in eine andere Welt entführen und die glanzzeiten der grossen
grandhotels um die jahrhundertwende wieder aufleben lassen.
THE SpLENDOR OF BYgONE DAYS HAS NEVER DIMMED
On Sunday 17th of july 1870 the opening of Waldstätterhof in Brunnen took place. The modern
first-class hotel by Fridolin Fassbind-Steinauer at that time included 115 guest rooms with 170
beds. until today not much has changed. Although the ladies’ and music salon, the smoker’s lounge
and billiard room do not exist anymore – lots of other things still remind of the old days. This
applies especially for the splendid halls which abduct the visitor into another world and let the
glory days of the big grand hotels around the turn of the century revive.

EINE EXpONIERTE LAgE FüR ILLuSTRE gäSTE
Die Idee, das Hotel direkt am eigens dafür errichteten Quai zu errichten, stammte von Fassbind-
Steinauers Frau Nanette, von damaligen Zeitgenossen ob ihrer Zielstrebigkeit auch „Marschall Vorwärts“
genannt. Ihrem Wunsch zu folgen, erweist sich noch heute als besonders weitsichtig.
Denn die Lage des Hotels hat nichts von ihrer Einmaligkeit eingebüsst und versetzt nach wie vor viele
gäste in Staunen. In seiner über 140-jährigen geschichte zog das Erstklasshaus immer wieder grössen
aus Adel, politik und kultur in seinen Bann. Ob königin Victoria von England, könig Alfons von Spanien,
Winston Churchill, gustav Stresemann, Hugo von Hofmannsthal oder Hermann Hesse – auch die
illustren gäste waren vom Ambiente und der exponierten Lage begeistert.
Heute ist das Hotel unter der Leitung von Direktor Aloys von Reding ein Haus mit modernster Ausstattung,
das sowohl Feriengästen als auch Seminar- und konferenzbesuchern ideale Bedingungen
bietet. Den Charme der „Belle Epoque“ hat es sich glücklicherweise über all die jahre bewahrt.
Sicherlich mit ein grund dafür, dass nach wie vor berühmte gäste wie der Ex-uS-präsident george Bush
von hier aus den Blick über den Vierwaldstättersee schweifen lassen und in der Eingangshalle den
Zauber dieses gebäudes auf Sitzmöbeln von ARTANOVA geniessen.
AN EXpOSED LOCATION FOR ILLuSTRIOuS guESTS
The idea to build the hotel directly at the specially purpose built quay, came from Fassbind-Steinauer’s
wife Nanette. For her determination contemporaries named her “Marshall Forward”. To follow her wish
still proves as particularly prescient, because the location of the hotel has lost none of its uniqueness
and still astonishes many guests. In its more than 140-year history the first-class hotel has always
attracted big names from aristocracy, politics and culture. Whether Queen Victoria of England, king
Alfonso of Spain, Winston Churchill, gustav Stresemann, Hugo von Hofmannsthal or Hermann Hesse –
also illustrious guests were thrilled by the ambiance and the exposed position.
Today under the supervision of director Aloys Reding, the hotel is a house with most modern equipment,
offering ideal conditions to both holiday guests and seminar and conference visitors. Fortunately
it has preserved the charm of the „Belle Epoque“ over the years. Certainly one reason why still famous
guests such as former u.S. president george Bush gaze out over Lake Lucerne and enjoy the magic
of the building in the lobby seated on furniture of ARTANOVA.

Den grundstein für diese kontinuierliche Entwicklung legte im jahr 1930 Werner Horst senior. 1933 lag
der Schwerpunkt auf der produktion von Rohrmöbel- und korbwaren. Nachdem der 2. Weltkrieg vorüber
war, ging die Entwicklung beständig weiter. Ein wegweisendes Ereignis war der Ausbau der polstermöbelfertigung
unter Werner Horst junior in den Sechzigern – die geburtsstunde der traditionellen Horst-Möbel
kollektion.
The corner stone for this continual development was laid in 1930 by Werner Horst senior. The core business
in 1933 was in wicker furniture and basketware. After the second world war the development continued
consistently. A groundbreaking event was the expansion of the upholstered furniture in the 1960’s
by Werner Horst junior – the birth of the traditional Horst-Furniture Collection.

Spätestens in den Siebzigern wurden die Ansprüche der kunden an die Modellvielfalt und -individualität
immer grösser. Auf diese Situation reagierte man schnell und äusserst erfolgreich. 50 Stammmodelle in 30
Stoffvarianten sowie in verschiedenen Lederfarben und -qualitäten – die Horst Ag hatte die Zeichen der
Zeit erkannt und die passende Antwort geliefert.
The demands of the clients regarding the model diversity and individuality had grown the most prior and
up to the seventies. The reaction to this situation was fast and extremely successful. 50 regular models
and 30 types of fabric along with miscellaneous colours and qualities of leather – the Horst Ag had noticed
the turn of the tide and answered appropriately.

Doch auf diesem Erfolg ruhte sich niemand aus. 1975 wurde die kollektion Artanova ins Leben
gerufen. Die gelungene kombination aus Design, Qualität und Alltagstauglichkeit macht
Sitzmöbel von Artanova so besonders – das hat der internationale Markt schon länger er- und
anerkannt. Die Artanova-Linie ist zu einem wichtigen und imagetragenden Element der Horst Ag
herangewachsen. Insbesondere die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit mit international bekannten
Designern lässt die Branche regelmässig aufhorchen und gespannt auf Neuigkeiten aus Steinen
warten.
No-one however, rested on their laurels. In 1975 the Artanova Collection was brought to life.
The successful combination of design, quality and everyday usability makes Artanova’s seating
furniture so special – a feature which has long since been recognised by the international
market. The Artanova range has become an important supporting element of the Horst Ag.
Especially the work with internationally well-known designers has made the branch prick up it’s
ears and wait attentively for news from Steinen.
