Alle Jahre wieder …
An einem Mai-Wochenende wird in
Soest der Bördetag gefeiert. Zwei
Tage lang vergnügen sich dann Jung
und Alt bei diesem bunten Altstadtfest
und krönen ihre Bördekönigin.
Unter dem Motto „Eine Stadt
(er)lebt das Mittelalter“,
findet 2015 wieder die Soester
Fehde statt, ein europäisches
Mittelalterfestival mit rund
600 Beteiligten aus 12 Nationen.
Der unangefochtene Höhepunkt des
Jahres ist die Soester Allerheiligenkirmes,
die größte Altstadtkirmes
Europas. Beginnend jeweils
am Mittwoch nach Allerheiligen
dauert das Spektakel fünf Tage. Vor
der mittelalterlichen Kulisse drängen
sich rund 400 Geschäfte in den
engen Gassen der Altstadt, davon
sind allein 40 Fahrgeschäfte; unter
ihnen selbstverständlich immer die
neuesten Attraktionen der laufenden
Saison.
Once a year …
During a week-end in May Soest
holds its Börde Market. For two
whole days young and old enjoy this
celebration throughout the old town
centre and during which their Börde
Queen is crowned.
The motto "Soest (re-) lives the
Middle Ages" announces the Soest
Feud which will take place once
again in 2015. Approximately 600
participants from 12 countries take
part in this medieval festival.
The indisputable highlight of the
year however, is the Allerheiligenkirmes
(the All Saints‘ Carnival).
This fair takes place in the centre
of the old town, is the largest of
its kind in Europe. It always begins
on the Wednesday after All Saints‘
Day and lasts for 5 days .Spread
out beneath the historical backdrop
400 side-shows, booths and more
than 40 roundabouts and carousels,
always including the newest and
most daring attractions, crowd into
the narrow lanes of the medieval
town.

Mehrmals im Jahr wird so ziemlich
um alles gehandelt und gefeilscht,
was Speicher und Keller zu bieten
haben, dann lädt die Gräfte entlang
der Stadtmauer zum größten Flohmarkt
der Region mit jeweils rund
50.000 Besuchern ein.
Zum Jahresausklang wird’s schließlich
noch einmal richtig gemütlich.
Dann nämlich findet auf einem der
schönsten Plätze Westfalens im
Schatten altehrwürdiger Kirchen und
inmitten von heimeligen Fachwerkhäusern
der Soester Weihnachtsmarkt
statt.
Außerdem gibt es den Altstadtfrühling,
den Winzermarkt im
Juli, das Fahrrad-Event „Sattel-
Fest“, den Bördebauernmarkt
und natürlich den Silvesterlauf,
einen der größten Deutschlands.
A few times a year the largest flea
market in the region, attracting
about 50,000 visitors at any one
time, takes place in the moat under
the town walls. Here you have the
chance to haggle and bargain over
the contents of Soest‘s attics and
cellars.
In December the Christmas
market takes place. The atmosphere
is enhanced by its location
snuggling between the ancient
churches and cosy half-timbered houses.
Art and craft articles, pottery and
wood carvings are on offer, beautifully
presented in spruce wooden huts.

innerhalb des historischen
Stadtwalls, die noch heute jedem

Dies hat schließlich Tradition. Im
PilgrimHaus, dem ältesten Gasthof
Westfalens, werden schon seit
dem Jahr 1304 Gäste bewirtet.

The people of Westphalia are wellknown
for their love of sumptuous
food and drink, lavish parties and
good company. This resulted in a
dense concentration of public houses
within the historic town walls – a
concentration which still today seeks
its equal. You‘ll find historic inns
with their cosy beer gardens,
homely pubs and international
speciality restaurants.
This is tradition in Soest. The
Pilgrim House, the oldest guesthouse
in Westphalia has been catering
for guests since 1304.

Die Soester Börde, ...
… das flache, fruchtbare Gebiet rund
um Soest, mit seinen aBwechslungsreichen
Landschaften
und urigen Dörfern ist ein ideales
Terrain für ausgedehnte Fahrrad-
Touren durchs Grüne. Oder warum
nicht einmal das mittel alterliche
Soest mit dem Fahrrad entdecken?!
Eine reizvolle Alternative zum sonst
üblichen Spaziergang ist es allemal.
Denn kurze Wege und viele Zwischenstopps
ergeben in kürzester
Zeit ein viel umfassenderes Bild als
zu Fuß. Buchbar ist unter anderem die
Führung „RadStadt Tour“ bei der
Tourist Information Soest. Mittwochs
regelmäßig geführten Radtouren reichen
von sportlich bis zum Familienausflug
mit kulturellem Hintergrund.
Hier ist für (fast) alle Konditions- und
Altersklassen das Richtige dabei.
Neu ausgeschildert wird zur Zeit die
„Soester Schlüssel-Tour“.
Durch die insgesamt 48 km lange
Route werden alle Soester Ortsteile
miteinander verbunden. Interessante
Sehenswürdigkeiten
und landschaftlich reizvolle Orte
entlang der Wegstrecke laden zum
Anhalten und Verweilen ein.

… – the flat pale, fertile area
around Soest, with its varied
landscapes and quaint
tweedy/rustic villages is an
ideal terrain for extended bike tours
through the nature. So why not even
discover the medieval Soest by
bike? A charming alternative to the
usual walk is it all. Because of short
distances and many stopovers you
can get a much broader picture than
by foot.
Bookable is the guided "Radstadt
Tour" as well as regular guided
tours on Wednesday. They serve an
offer from sporty- to family-trips with
a cultural background – an offer for
everyone. New provided with road
signs is currently the "Soester
Schlüssel-Tour". By the 48 km
route all districts of Soest are
connected. Interesting sights
and scenic places along the
route invite you to stop and linger.

Altstadt-Rundgang
Die Jahrhunderte werden lebendig
in den engen Gassen und Winkeln,
formen die Stadt und prägen ihr Bild.
Soest atmet Geschichte, schöpft aus
einer reichen Vergangenheit, die bis
in die jüngere Steinzeit zurückreicht.
Im mittelalterlichen Gefüge
Deutschlands spielte Soest als
Hansestadt eine entscheidende
Rolle – Soester Kaufleute waren es,
die an der Gründung des mächtigen
Städte bundes „Hanse“ entscheidend
mitwirkten.
Die Silhouette der Stadt wird neben
bedeutenden Kirchen von der mittelalterlichen
Stadtumwallung und
zahlreichen sehenswerten Profanbauten
aus dem für Soest typischen
Grünsandstein dominiert. Mit Recht
kann man hier vom „weltweit
einmaligen Grünsandstein-
Ensemble Altstadt Soest“
sprechen. Hübsche Fachwerkzeilen
und romantische Gässchen prägen
zudem den Stadtkern. Der Wall mit
seinen Gräben, den sogenannten
Gräften, ist zu zwei Dritteln erhalten
und lädt besonders im April und Mai,
zur Zeit der Baumblüte, zu reizvollen
Spaziergängen rund um die Stadt
ein.

Walking tour
The centuries come to life in the
narrow lanes and the nooks and
crannies which mould the town and
its image. Soest positively breathes
history, inspired by a prolific past
extending as far back as Neolithic
times. As a Hanseatic town
Soest played a crucial role in the
structure of medieval Germany and
it was the merchants of Soest who
made a decisive contribution to the
formation of the powerful Hanseatic
League.
The silhouette of the town is dominated
by its churches, as well as by
its medieval town walls and numerous
secular buildings dating from
diverse eras. One can, with justification,
speak of the world-wide,
unique green sandstone
ensemble – the old town centre.
Rows of delightful half-timbered
houses and romantic lanes give the
old town centre its unmistakable
character. Two thirds of the town
walls and their dry moats have been
preserved and a walk along them is
particularly inviting in April and May
when the trees are in full bloom.

Viele Baustile und bedeutende
Epochen haben in Soest ihre Spuren
hinterlassen. Einer der wenigen
repräsenta tiven Barockbauten ist
das rathaus (1713-1716) mit
seiner neunbogigen Halle an der
West seite. Über diesem Bogengang
thront St. Patroklus, der Schutzpatron
der Stadt. Auf der Rückseite des
Barockbaus be findet sich der neuere
Teil des Rathauses, der ehemals
auch ein Gymnasium beherbergte.
Many architectural styles and
important eras have left their traces
in Soest. One of the few remaining
representative Baroque buildings
is the Rathaus, 1713-1716 (the
Town Hall) with its arcade of nine
arches on its west side. A statue of
St Patroclus, the patron saint of the
town, looks down from above this
arcade. At the back of this Baroque
building is the newer part of the
Rathaus which formerly housed a
grammar school.

Gleich nebenan erhebt sich der
mächtige Turm von St. patrokli,
auch „Turm Westfalens“ genannt. Der
romanische Bau entstand nach 965
als Stiftskirche. Im Dom-Museum im
Westwerk kann man das bedeutende
Wurzel-Jesse-Fenster, eine Darstellung
der Abstammung Jesu, betrachten.
Sehenswert ist außerdem die
Apsismalerei von 1200 im Marienchor.
Directly next to the Rathaus rises
the mighty tower of the Patrokli-
Minster (The Tower of Westphalia).
This Romanesque building dates from
after 965 A.D. when it was founded as
a collegiate church. In the Marien chor
there is a particularly fine apse fresco
from 1200 A.D.
Ein paar Schritte weiter, in der Thomästraße,
steht die Nikolai-Kapelle aus
dem 12. Jahrhundert, die dem Schutzpatron
der Seefahrer und Reisenden
gewidmet ist. Im Inneren kann man eine
kostbare Altartafel aus der Schule des
Meisters Conrad von Soest bewundern.
A few steps further on, in the Thomästraße,
you will find the Nikolai-
Kapelle (Chapel of St. Nicholas)
which dates from the 12th century.
This chapel is dedicated to the patron
saint of seafarers and travellers. Inside
is a precious altarpiece by the school
of Master Conrad of Soest.
Direkt neben St. Patrokli zeigt die
Stadt im Kunstmuseum Wilhelm-
Morgner-Haus Wechselausstellungen
und eine ständige Ausstellung
des bekannten Soester Expressionisten
Wilhelm Morgner. Das 1962
erbaute Haus be herbergt neben dem
städtischen Kunstbesitz auch eine
private Galerie.
Directly beside the Patrokli-Minster
is the Wilhelm-Morgner-House
(1962). Various changing exhibitions, a
permanent exhibition of works by the
famous Soest impressionist Wilhelm
Morgner, works of art belonging to the
town as well as a private gallery are
to be found here.

Nur die Fußgängerzone trennt St.
Patrokli von St. Petri, der ältesten
Kirchengründung Westfalens. Der
älteste, heute nicht mehr nachzuweisende
Gebäudeteil der „Alden Kerke“,
stammt aus dem 8. Jahrhundert.
Der Chor von 1277 ist gotischen
Ursprungs, während der Turmhelm
typisch barocke Züge trägt. Die Kaiserempore
von 1200 im Langhaus zeugt
von bedeutenden Gästen, die in der
Vergangenheit in Soest weilten.
The Patrokli-Dom and the Petrikirche
(the Auld Kirk), the oldest
church foundation in Westphalia, are
separated only by the width of the
pedestrian area. The oldest part of the
Petrikirche, which is no longer detectable,
dates from the 8th century. In
the nave the Kaiser empore (Emperor‘s
Gallery 1200 A.D.) bears witness to the
illustrious guests of former days. The
choir is of Gothic origin, while the spire
has definite Baroque characteristics.
Um an den Großen Teich zu gelangen,
durchquert man den Theodor-
Heuss-Park, einen ehemaligen
Privatgarten.
To reach the Mill Pond you walk
through the Theodor-Heuss Park,
formerly a private garden.
Auf der anderen Seite der Grünsandsteinmauer,
die den gesamten
Park umschließt, befindet sich die
Teichsmühle aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.
Der daneben liegende GroSSe
Teich friert im Winter nie zu, da er
von unzähligen Quellen gespeist wird.
Schräg gegenüber der Teichsmühle,
auf der anderen Seite des Teiches,
steht eine Nachbildung der mittelalterlichen
„Wippe“. Hierbei handelt es
sich um ein in der Schandfarbe Gelb
gestrichenes Strafinstrument, von
dem aus kleinere Sünder in den Teich
gewippt wurden.
On the other side of the green sandstone
wall, which completely encloses
the park, is the old mill (13th cent.).

The millpond beside it never freezes
over because it is fed by innumerable
springs. Diagonally opposite the mill,
on the other side of the pond, is the
reproduction of the see-saw, a medieval
instrument of punishment. In the
Middle Ages miscreants were propelled
from the see-saw (painted yellow – the
colour of disgrace) into the pond.
Im Norden der Altstadt ragen die Türme
von St. Maria zur Wiese (Wiesenkirche),
einer der schönsten spätgotischen
Hallenkirchen Deutschlands von
1313, in den Himmel. Neben bedeutenden
Tafelmalereien aus dem 14. und
16. Jahrhundert, fasziniert im Inneren
besonders das „Westfälische
Abendmahl“-Fenster über dem Nordportal.
Es wurde um 1500 von einem
unbekannten Künstler geschaffen und
zeigt Jesus beim Abendmahl mit seinen
Jüngern. Allerdings befinden sich hier
Schinken, Bier und Pumpernickel auf
dem Tisch! Voraussichtliche Fertigstellung
des Nordturms 2019/2020.
To the north of the old part of the town
you will see the spires of St. Maria
zur Wiese (Wiesenkirche). This is
one of the most beautiful late Gothic
hall churches in Germany. The spires,
however, were not completed until
1882. Due to the ongoing restoration
of the towers the façade is partly
covered in scaffolding. This and the
accompanying stone restoration workshop
have become an integral part of
the church. In addition to important
paintings on wood (14th-16th cents.)
one is particularly fascinated by the

a stained glass window above the
northern portal. This window, created
by an unknown artist around 1500
A.D., shows Christ and his disciples
at the Last Supper. Peculiar is the fact
that you will see ham, beer and Pumpernickel
(black bread) on the table.
The completion of the North Tower is
expected in 2019/2020.

is the new green sandstone
museum. This museum presents
interesting details about green sandstone
- Soest‘s trade mark – from
its geological origin to its use in the
reconstruction of the Wiesenkirche.
Zurück über Wiesenstraße und Hohe
Gasse gelangt man zu St. Maria zur
Höhe (Hohnekirche). Sie entstand mit
ihren prächtigen Decken- und Wandmalereien
um 1220 und beherbergt
Deutschlands einziges Scheibenkreuz.
By walking back via the Wiesenstrasse
and the Hohe Gasse you reach
the church of St. Maria zur Höhe
(Hohnekirche). This church with its
splendid murals and painted ceiling
was built around 1200 A.D. Here you
will find the only disc cross (Scheibenkreuz)
in Germany.
Über die Kleine Osthofe geht es dann
weiter in Richtung Osthofentor.
Dies ist das einzig noch erhaltene von
ursprünglich zehn Stadttoren der mittelalterlichen
Umwallung. Der Neubau
stammt aus den Jahren 1523 – 1526.
Im Inneren befindet sich ein Museum
zur Stadtgeschichte mit einer weltweit
einmaligen Sammlung von 25.000 mittelalterlichen
Armbrustbolzen.
A short walk along the Kleine Osthofe
brings you to the Osthofentor. This
is the only existing gate of originally
ten in the town wall. The reconstruction
took place between 1523 and
1526. Inside there is a museum of
town history including a worldwide
unique collection of 25,000 medieval
crossbow bolts.

Direkt gegenüber beginnt die Wallmauer
(um 1180), die mit einer
Länge von ehemals 3,8 km 102 Hektar
Altstadt um schloss. Heute sind noch
zwei Drittel des Walls erhalten. Auf
dieser Mauer und auch durch die Gräften,
vor denen früher der Außenwall
verlief, kann man heute wunderschöne
Spaziergänge machen und in so manchen
Altstadtgarten blicken.
The town wall (approx 1180 A.D.)
starts directly opposite. It was formerly
3.8 kms. long and enclosed the 102
hectares of the old town. Two thirds
of the wall still exist today. It is possible
to take an interesting walk along
the top of the wall, or through the dry
moats which were situated between
the inner and outer walls. From here
you can catch a glimpse into some of
the charming old town centre gardens.
„Schiefer Turm“ wird die Kirche
Alt St. Thomä genannt, einer der
ältesten gotischen Kirchenbauten
der Stadt (um 1270). Der Turm selbst
stammt aus dem Jahr 1653. Um seine
Entstehung rankt sich so manche
Geschichte. Die Schiefstellung resultiert
aus Schäden durch Fäulnis im
Gebälk.
“Schiefer Turm” (The Squint Tower) is
the nickname of the Alt St. Thomä
Kirche, one of the oldest Gothic
churches in the town (approx. 1270
A.D.). Many strange tales are told
about the origin of its tower (1653
A.D.). Fact is that its “crookedness”
is a result of damage due to rot in its
timbers.

Überquert man nun den Grandweg, so
gelangt man über eine kleine Gasse
zum Burghof museum, einem
alten Patrizierhaus (1559), das heute
Ausstellungsstücke zur Kunst- und
Stadtgeschichte zeigt. Hier gibt es
auch eine Dauerausstellung mit
Kupferstichen von Heinrich Aldegrever.
Hinter dem Burghofmuseum
befindet sich das Romanische
Haus, eines der ältesten Wohnhäuser
zwischen Rhein und Weser aus
der Zeit um 1200.

den Kattenturm (1230), den

Moving on to the Ulrichertor you
have a view of the Kattenturm
(1230A.D). This is the only remaining
defensive tower of the former inner
wall.

Im Haus zum Spiegel verwahrt das
Soester Stadtarchiv den größten
mittelalterlichen Akten- und Urkundenbestand
einer Stadt in Westfalen,
darunter auch die berühmte „Alte Kuhhaut“,
das älteste Soester Stadtrecht
(13. Jh.). Gleichzeitig ist es Sitz
der Soester Stadtarchäologie.
The Soest Town Archive in the
Haus zum Spiegel harbours the largest
medieval collection of records and
documents in Westphalia. Particular
attractions are the famous “Old Cowhide”
(Alte Kuhhaut -13th cent.), the
oldest Soest Town Charter as
well as the Vehmic Court book (Nequambuch).
This is also the seat of the Soest
town archaeology department.
Im Bergenthalpark mit seinem
bemerkenswerten, alten Baumbestand
liegt die ehemalige Wohn- und
Arbeitsstätte des Künstlers und Philosophen
Hugo Kükelhaus. Von 1954
bis 1984 lebte Kükelhaus in Soest
und baute sich die einstige Fachwerkscheune
am Eingang des Parks nach
organ -logischen Grundsätzen zu seinem
„unbezahlbaren Haus“ um.
In the Bergenthal Park you can admire
a particularly rare stock of trees. This
park was named after C.W.Bergenthal
(1834-1893), one of the early pioneers
of industrialisation in Soest. Here is
also a former half-timbered barn which
served the artist and philosopher
Hugo Kükelhaus between 1954
until 1984 both as residence and place
of work and which he converted to
conform to his organological principles.
Neben der Nikolaikapelle ist die
Brunsteinkapelle die letzte von
über 20 Soester Kapellen. Sie wurde im
Jahr 1225 erstmals erwähnt und dient
zur Zeit als Atelier und Ausstellungsraum
