to berlin’s 30 th long night of museums
The Long Night of Museums is one of Berlin’s bestknown
cultural events giving visitors from all over
the world a great overview of the museum landscape
in Germany’s capital. Around 70 museums
open their doors on January 28th 2012 between 6
p.m. and 2 a.m. to show their collections, exhibitions,
guided tours and special programmes to the
public. In 2012 Berlin and Brandenburg are going
to celebrate the 300th birthday of Frederick the
Great, which gave us reason to explore his living
and legislating history as our main theme. Several
venues will show artefacts from their collections,
offer special guided tours concerning the acting of
Frederick and show musical and literary performances.
TICKETS
The Kombiticket provides entry to all participating
venues and unlimited use of the shuttle bus service
as well as unlimited use of public transportation
(BVG and S-Bahn) in zones ABC (3 p.m. Saturday
– 5 a.m. Sunday). Price: 15€/concessions 10€
SHUTTLE BUSES
Although many venues are within walking distance
from the Kulturforum (central meeting point),
many more are spread out across the city; so the
shuttle bus service helps you navigate your way
between the museums and enables you to see as
much as possible. On each bus there will be a steward
on hand answering any question you may have.
SUITABLE FOR FOREIGNERS
People are often unsure whether the Long Night of
Museums is suitable for non-German-speakers.
The answer is: yes, it is! Due to the wide range of
participating venues and the various programmes
on offer, German is no precondition for attending
the Long Night. Many venues offer information in
English, and many exhibitions and parts of the special
programmes will be self-explanatory. For
more information read our tips below.
PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
u Musikinstrumenten-Museum
The Musikinstrumenten-Museum will show a special
exhibition on »Frederick’s Montezuma: power
and wits in the Prussian opera of the royal courtyard«.
Musical performances will be given at 6
p.m. by the Berlin Clarinet Choir, at 8 and 10 p.m.
by the jazz-duo Riermeier/Naehring. At 12 a.m.
the institution is going to show the silent movie
»Faust« (Direction: F.W. Murnau, D 1926) which
will be accompanied by Jörg Joachim Riehle on the
Mighty-Wurlitzer-Organ.
u Puppentheater-Museum Berlin
On the historic site of Karl-Marx-Straße, the Puppentheater-Museum
will offer the family-programme
»How Pinocchio learned to walk« at 6, 7.30, 9.30
and 11.30 p.m. There will be filmings of Mozart’s
operas on the puppets’ stage, productions by the Salzburger
puppet theatre alongside to their current exhibition
»Puppet theatre – play range of imaginations«.
u Hanf Museum Berlin
The only hemp museum in Germany is going to invite
to their permanent exhibition on cannabis: its
history, biological characteristics, ritual impact
and legal situation. Furthermore a special exhibition
on »Frederick the Great and customary hemp«,
an agricultural commodity of the rococo era will be
shown and there will be live music, tasty hemp-tea
and hemp-waffles on offer.
u St. Matthäus-Kirche
Built by Schinkel’s follower Friedrich August Stüler
between 1844 and 1846, the church still functions
as a church, but also organizes exhibitions, performances
and concerts. During the Long Night several
musical programmes will be offered. At 6, 7
and 8 p.m. Klaus Schöpp (flute) and Liana Narubina
(harpsichord) are going to perform music by
Frederick the Great and other composers, at 11
p.m. and 12 a.m. Liana Narubina (positive organ)
and Peter Knappe (organ) are going to play music
for two organs and finally at 1 a.m. Holger Knappe
will play famous royal themes from music’s history
on the organ.
u Museum für Kommunikation
The Museum für Kommunikation which presents
the origins, development and future prospects of
our information society in a manner accessible to
all is going to celebrate the 30th Long Night of
Museums true to their current exhibition motto
»Fashion Talks«. Between 6 and 2 a.m. everyone
will be invited to join the workshop »Be your own
designer!« while children may join different agebased
offers between 6 and 10 p.m.
u Tränenpalast
In the former departure hall of the DDR-border
crossing Bahnhof Friedrichstraße, colloquially called
the »Tränenpalast« (»Palace of Tears«), visitors can
see the exhibition »Grenzerfahrungen. Alltag der
deutschen Teilung« on the daily grind of the German
division: tears of farewell and aspiration, anger
and desperation – hardly any other spot in town
shows the concentration of emotions towards the
German division as strong as here.
