2.1Technical information / Technische InformationenReflections in RF-coaxial connectorsAll connectors produce signal reflections at highfrequencies. This is due to a minor variation of theconnector impedance to that of the overall system. These irregularities have either inductive orcapacitive behaviour depending on the operatingfrequency and the degradation of the performanceat higher frequencies. The unmatched impedancescan also be caused by a combination of internaldimension changes and tolerances, material andtermination techniques. Different mating interfacescan also effect the overall system performance. The reflection performance is commonly expressedas returnloss (α), S-Parameter (S-11), the VoltageStanding Wave Ratio VSWR (s) and the reflectioncoefficient (r) and all three correspond to eachother mathematically:Reflection performance / ReflexionsverhaltenReturnloss VSWR ReflectioncoefficientRückfluss- Steh- Refledämpfungwellen- xionsverhältnisfaktorα [dB] s r1 17,3910 0,89132 8,7242 0,79433 5,8480 0,70794 4,4194 0,63105 3,5698 0,56236 3,0095 0,50127 2,6146 0,44678 2,3229 0,39819 2,0999 0,354810 1,9250 0,316211 1,7849 0,281812 1,6709 0,251213 1,5769 0,223914 1,4985 0,199515 1,4326 0,177816 1,3767 0,158517 1,3290 0,141318 1,2880 0,125919 1,2528 0,112220 1,2222 0,1000Returnloss VSWR ReflectioncoefficientRückfluss- Steh- Refledämpfungwellen- xionsverhältnisfaktorα [dB] s r21 1,1957 0,089122 1,1726 0,079423 1,1524 0,070824 1,1347 0,063125 1,1192 0,056226 1,1055 0,050127 1,0935 0,044728 1,0829 0,039829 1,0736 0,035530 1,0653 0,031631 1,0580 0,028232 1,0515 0,025133 1,0458 0,022434 1,0407 0,020035 1,0362 0,017836 1,0322 0,015837 1,0287 0,014138 1,0255 0,012639 1,0227 0,011240 1,0202 0,0100Reflexionen in HF-KoaxialsteckverbindernJeder Steckverbinder ruft bezogen auf die ihn umgebendenSystemimpedanz Reflexionen hervor, die von Impedanzabweichungen herrühren. Als Maß für das Reflexionsverhalten sinddie Rückflussdämpfung (α), S-Parameter (S-11),das Stehwellenverhältnis (s) sowie der Reflexionsfaktor(r) gebräuchlich, welche mathematisch unmittelbarzusammenhängen:Returnloss VSWR ReflectioncoefficientRückfluss- Steh- Refledämpfungwellen- xionsverhältnisfaktorα [dB] s r41 1,0180 0,008942 1,0160 0,007943 1,0143 0,007144 1,0127 0,006345 1,0113 0,005646 1,0101 0,005047 1,0090 0,004548 1,0080 0,004049 1,0071 0,003550 1,0063 0,003251 1,0057 0,002852 1,0050 0,002553 1,0045 0,002254 1,0040 0,002055 1,0036 0,001856 1,0032 0,001657 1,0028 0,001458 1,0025 0,001359 1,0022 0,001160 1,0020 0,0010Due to the increased accuracy of cutting andsolder termination of semi rigid cables, smallerimpedance irregularities are achieved whencompared with flexible coaxial cables. Connectorstyles also effect the reflection i.e. straight connectorsgenerally produce a better performance thanright angle versions. Therefore the reflectionperformance can vary within the same connectorseries dependent on style and cable.
Passive intermodulation (PIM)in communication systemsIntermodulation products are generated when twoor more frequencies are applied to a non-lineartransmission element. A non-linear device isproduced when the signal applied does not have aproportional ratio between current and voltage atthe same time. The frequencies of these intermodulation productsare in accordance to the following equation:withfIM = intermodulation frequenciesf1,2,.. carrier frequenciesn,m,q,.. integral multiplicatorsPassive Intermodulation (PIM) innachrichtentechnischen SystemenIntermodulation wird in nichtlinearen Übertragungsgliedernbeim Anlegen zweier oder mehrererFrequenzen generiert. Trägerfrequenzenn,m,q,.. ganzzahlige Vielfache2.1Technical information / Technische InformationenThese mixed frequencies can cause disruption incommunication systems or measuring equipmentif several carrier frequencies with high intensityhave the same transmission path as weak receivingsignals, i.e. mobile phones.Intermodulation in passive components is causedby very small non-linearities of the conductingparts. Intermodulation an passiven Komponenten entstehtdurch geringste Nichtlinearitäten an leitendenTeilen.
