A cat and a butterfly. Painting and calligraphy.

42,1 x 36,8 cm. Original mounting. The
painting is signed and sealed by Sô Shikô
(1781–1850), from the eminent line of
Nagasaki painters including Sô Shiseki
and Sô Shizan. Toda Tadataka, the calligrapher,
was the fifth generation head of
the Toda clan, feudal rulers of Ashikaga
han. The painting, harkening back to a
traditional Chinese thematic pair signifying
longevity via a complex rebus/pun, is
well done, the calligraphy that of a cultivated
hand. – In very good condition, no
breaks or tears. In the original wooden
box.

Streifen zeigt eine durchgehende Landschaft,
in der die verschiedensten Jagdunfälle
passieren. Aber nicht nur afrikanisches
Getier findet sich in diesem
Kamerun, nein, man macht auch Jagd
auf Känguruhs, Tiger und Kolibiris. Der
Küstler ist M. Mandl. – Vorderes Innengelenk
verstärkt, die Falze hinterlegt, 1
Durchriß hinterlegt, 2 kleine Fehlstellen.

boards. – An amusing childern’s book
showing hunting misadventures in the
Cameroons. Interestingly, this version of
West Africa contains tigers, kangaroos
and colibiri. – The folds of the leporello
reinforced by strips of fabric on the verso.
One repaired tear-through, 2 minor surface
defects.
