Karin Schwyter. Ich war eine relativ unkritische Standard-Geographiestudentin,bis ich während meines Erasmus-Aufenthalts an der UniSheffield (GB) in den Seminaren von Nicky Gregson und Gill Valentineerkannte, wie einseitig männlich der Blickwinkel der Geographischen Forschungin vielen Bereichen noch immer ist. Seitdem ist die Geschlechterforschungmeine Wahlheimat aus Überzeugung. Für meine Diplomarbeitzur Arbeitsteilung in Familien führte ich spannende Gespräche mitSchweizer Vätern und Müttern. Bald sind auch die Abschlussprüfungengeschrieben und ich halte - sofern alles gut geht - das Diplom in der Hand.Doch so leicht lässt mich die Geschlechterforschung nicht los, im Mai schonbeginnt meine Diss. Ich studiere an der Universität Zürich Geographie(Schwerpunkt Human- und Wirtschaftsgeographie), Politikwissenschaftenund Ethnologie. In meiner Diplomarbeit beschäftige ich mich mit demGeschlechterunterschied im Zugang zur Grundschulausbildung in der RegionKapilavastu, Nepal. Mit Fokus auf Mädchen als soziale Gruppe, welcheim Zugang zur Schulbildung benachteiligt ist, interessiert mich, welcheFaktoren bestimmend sind für den Zugang – beziehungsweise Ausschluss –von Mädchen zur Grundschulausbildung. Dabei möchte ich primär diePerspektive und Problematik auf der Nachfrageseite (Haushaltsebene)beleuchten. Damit das Ziel eines universalen Zugangs zur Grundschulausbildung erreichtwerden kann, erachte ich die Berücksichtigung des Gender-Aspekts als zentral.(lschaerer@geo.unizh.ch)Kate Molesworth. In the course of my research and consultancy work Ibecame interested in the ways in which the development process ismediated by and impacts upon gender dynamics. My doctoral thesisexamined the impact of a substantial road project in the hills of Nepal ongendered aspects of the development process that are associated withfertility and demographic change. Taking an integrated approach and usingcombined ethnographic and quantitative techniques, I explored linksbetween this development initiative and female livelihood options, access toinformation, urban and media exposure, education, autonomy, and accessto health and contraceptive services.My current research with the Development Study Group (DSG) of the University of Zürich andSwiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South examines the impact ofdevelopment initiatives on rural communities and the links between livelihoods, health and fertilityin low-income countries. I am also currently supervising collaborative research with UNFPAinto reproductive decision-making and livelihood issues in rural Nepal. I was recently invited topresent a guest lecture entitled "Gender in Development" on Elisabeth Bühler's course "GeographischeGeschlechterforschung: Theorie und Praxis".
