Hirschvogel und Schaeffler gewinnen
Stahl-Innovations preis 2009
In Motion
Juni
2009 in Düsseldorf statt. Mit
einem bunten Festprogramm und
einem großen Presse-Aufgebot
verstand es der Veranstalter, der
Preisverleihung einen würdigen
Rahmen zu verleihen. Bis zum
Schluss blieb es spannend, wer
von den Finalisten die ersten
Plätze belegen würde. Für die
diesjährige Verleihung wurden
644 Bewerbungen um den Preis
eingereicht. Angesichts der zahlreichen
Mitbewerber können wir
besonders stolz auf den erzielten
2. Platz in der Kategorie „Produkte
aus Stahl“ sein.
Ausgezeichnet wurde unsere
Ausgleichswelle, die durch intelligenten
Einsatz des Werkstoffs
Stahl in einem PKW-Motor ca.
1% Kraftstoff einspart. Die
Wälz lagerung führt im Vergleich
zur konventionellen Gleitlagerung
zu geringeren Reibungsverlusten
und zu einigen anderen motortechnischen
Vorteilen. Die Wälzlagerung,
die bauraumsparend
sowie gewichts- und kostenoptimiert
direkt auf der Welle läuft,
erfordert eine entsprechende
Werkstoffqualität der Ausgleichswelle.
Diese kann mit den bisher
Hirschvogel and Schaeffler win
Steel Innovation Prize 2009
The Hirschvogel Automotive Group together with its customer
Schaeffler KG was awarded the renowned Steel Innovation Prize this
year. This prize is the most significant accolade in Europe when it
comes to the material steel. It is only awarded every three years by
the Steel Institute VDEh and the Stahlinformationszentrum (steel
information center) in Düsseldorf. A jury, consisting of high-ranking
judges from science and politics, has been awarding successful innovations
in the areas of “Products Made of Steel”, “Steel in Research
and Development/Processes”, “Parts and Systems Made of
Steel for Construction” and “Steel Design” since 1989.
Dr. Hans-Willi Raedt, Director Product
Development, receives the prize.
The award ceremony took place
in front of 1,000 participants on
June 30, 2009 in Düsseldorf.
With a colorful program and a
large press contingent, the event
organizer lent an air of grandeur
to the award ceremony. The suspense
of finding out which of the
finalists would achieve the first
places was kept up right until the
very end. 644 applications were
submitted for this prize. In view of
the high number of applicants, we
can be particularly proud of having
achieved 2nd place in the category
“Products Made of Steel”.
August/August 2009
We received the prize for our balancer
shaft, which saves approx.
1% of fuel in a passenger car
due to the intelligent use of steel.
The anti-friction bearing system
leads to lower friction losses and
to some additional benefits with
respect to the engine compared
to the use of conventional plain
bearings. The anti-friction bearing,
which runs directly on the
shaft, thereby saving space and
yielding weight and cost savings,
requires an appropriate material
quality of the balancer shaft. This
quality cannot be achieved using
cast materials that have been
customary for these components
to date. Forged steel is necessary
for this application. Schaeffler
chose Hirschvogel as a partner to
co-develop this weight-optimized
forged part with its filigree stiffness-optimized
design and variable
inner ring geometry and to
assist in putting it into large-serial
production. The Steel Innovation
Prize, received at the time series
ramp-up commenced, testifies to
the success of this joint development
project.
The balancer shaft is only one of
many parts which we develop
Automobilmarkt in USA:
Krise als Chance
Die ursprüngliche Krise am
Immobilien- und Finanzmarkt
in den USA hat sich mittlerweile
in fast alle Bereiche ausgebreitet.
Besonders hart ist die
Automobilindustrie betroffen.
Neben Chrysler und GM melden
auch immer mehr namhafte
First-Tier-Lieferanten Insolvenz
an. Die OEMs legen ihre Produktion
über mehrere Wochen,
sogar Monate still. Das hat zur
Folge, dass bei Lieferanten, die
stark von diesen OEMs abhängen,
der Umsatz immens einbricht.
Diese Konstellation kann
eine weitere Insolvenz-Welle
durch die gesamte Lieferkette
zur Folge haben.
Auch an Hirschvogel Incorporated
in den USA geht die Krise nicht
spurlos vorbei, doch hält sich der
Umsatzeinbruch in einem Rahmen,
mit dem wir gut umgehen
können. Dies haben wir unserer
guten Diversifikation zu verdanken.
Zum einen hat Hirschvogel
einen breiten Kundenstamm, zum
anderen eine Streuung in verschiedene
Produktgruppen und
auch einen nicht unwesentlichen
Geschäftsanteil im Non-Automotive-Bereich.
Deshalb fallen die
Rückgänge bei Hirschvogel geringer
aus, als bei vielen anderen Unternehmen
in unserer Branche.
Fast täglich gibt es neue Hiobs-
Botschaften und Überraschungen
auf dem Automobilmarkt. Hirschvogel
beobachtet diese Entwicklungen
ständig, reagiert auf diese
In Motion
möglichst früh und versucht dabei,
ein Maximum an Flexibilität zu bewahren.
Schon frühzeitig haben
wir entsprechende Maßnahmen
eingeleitet, um auf die reduzierten
Abnahmemengen zu reagieren.
Hirschvogel versucht, pro-aktiv in
der Krise zu agieren, indem wir zum
Beispiel ein „Risk Management“
betreiben. Sowohl auf Lieferanten-
als auch auf Kundenseite wird eine
Risikoanalyse durchgeführt und
dementsprechende Vorkehrungen
getroffen (siehe Beitrag Debitorenmanagement).
Wir sind überzeugt, dass nach der
Krise eine Erholung des Markts
einsetzt. So nutzen wir die Zeit für
Umstrukturierungen, Produktionsverbesserungen,
Schulungen etc.,
um so gestärkt aus der Krise hervor
zu gehen.
Neben all den Gefahren bringt die
Krise aber auch Chancen mit sich.
Viele unserer amerikanischen
Kunden haben Bedenken hinsichtlich
der finanziellen Stabilität
des ein oder anderen Wettbewerbers.
So konnte Hirschvogel
Incorporated in der Krisenzeit
sogar neue Projekte dazu gewinnen.
Selbst wenn sich der Markt
nur sehr langsam erholen würde,
plant Hirschvogel Incorporated
ein gesundes Wachstum in den
kommenden Monaten.
Automotive Market in the US:
Taking Advantage of the Crisis
The original crisis on the real
estate and financial market in
the US has now spread to almost
all areas. The automotive
industry has been hit particularly
hard. Besides Chrysler and GM,
an increasing number of renowned
first-tier suppliers are
filing under Chapter 11. The
OEMs are shutting down their
production for several weeks or
even months. For the suppliers
who depend heavily on these
OEMs this is causing their turnover
to plummet. This constellation
may lead to a further
bankruptcy wave across the
entire supply chain.
While the crisis has certainly
not passed by unnoticed for
Hirschvogel Incorporated in the
US, the cut in turnover is being
contained to such an extent
that we can handle it well.
This is due to our high level of
diversification. On the one hand,
Hirschvogel has a broad customer
base; on the other hand, we have
various product groups as well as
a significant turnover in the nonautomotive
area. This means that
economic downturns do not have
such a severe impact as they do
on many other companies in our
industry.
Bad news and unpleasant surprises
are almost a daily occurrence
on the automotive market
at the moment. Hirschvogel is
keeping tabs on these developments,
is reacting to them as
quickly as possible and is striving
to maintain maximum flexibility.
We introduced appropriate measures
early on in order to react to
reduced order quantities.
Hirschvogel is trying to be proactive
during the crisis by operating
risk management, for example.
A risk analysis is carried out on
both the supplier and customer
side. Appropriate measures are
then implemented as a result of
this (please refer to the article on
debtor management).
We are convinced that after the
crisis the market will see a recovery.
We are therefore using
the time constructively for restructuring
measures, for making
production improvements, for
carrying out training etc., in order
to emerge from the crisis in a
stronger position.
Besides all the risks, the crisis
also holds opportunities. Many of
our US customers have opted to
come to Hirschvogel due to concerns
over the financial stability
of other competitors. Hirschvogel
Incorporated has therefore even
been able to gain new projects in
these times of crisis. Even if the
market were to make only a slow
recovery, Hirschvogel Incorporated
is planning healthy growth over the
coming months.
Debitorenmanagement –
Transparenz schafft Vertrauen
Ein systematisches und aktives
Forderungsmanagement
ist heute eine zentrale und von
der Unternehmensgröße unabhängige
Management-Aufgabe
und wichtiger Bestandteil des
internen Risikomanagements.
Sie beginnt bei der Bonitätsprüfung,
die sowohl Neu- als auch
Bestandskunden umfasst und
fortlaufend aktualisiert wird.
Weiterhin wird eine individuelle
Analyse der Zahlungsmoral auf
Kundenebene durchgeführt, die
mit den Vertriebsmitarbeitern
regelmäßig besprochen wird.
So können Risiken frühzeitig erkannt
und vorbeugende Maßnahmen
ergriffen werden.
Besonders in der derzeitigen Wirtschaftslage
und bei zunehmender
Anzahl von Insolvenzen, auch
unter Hirschvogel-Kunden, wie
wir bereits mehrfach schmerzlich
erfahren mussten, gewinnen die
Themen Debitorenmanagement
und Transparenz noch stärker an
Bedeutung. Die Finanzierungspartner
wie Banken und Kreditversicherungen
fordern umfassende
Informationen, da diese mit nicht
unerheblichen Beträgen im Obligo
stehen. Auch unsere Kunden und
Lieferanten fordern immer stärker
Informationen ein, um die Bonität
und dadurch auch die Liefer- bzw.
Zahlungsfähigkeit ihrer Lieferkette
besser einschätzen zu können.
Vielen Unternehmen ist noch
nicht bewusst, dass Transparenz
im Hinblick auf die eigene finanzielle
Situation heute überlebenswichtig
sein kann. Mangelnde
Transparenz führt unter anderem
dazu, dass Kreditversicherungen
ihre Limits reduzieren oder sogar
ganz streichen. Das hat dann zur
Folge, dass einige vorsichtige Lieferanten
ihre Zahlungsziele sofort
verkürzen und somit ein Unternehmen
schnell in Liquiditätsprobleme
kommen kann.
Leider nimmt ganz allgemein die
durchschnittliche Zahlungsmoral
immer mehr ab. Dies hat unterschiedliche
Gründe. Teilweise
wird bewusst zu spät bezahlt,
um die eigene Liquidität zu schonen,
teilweise kann aufgrund fehlender
Liquidität bzw. schlechter
Bonität nicht früher gezahlt werden.
Selten sind Systemfehler
die Ursache. Unsere Kunden
verlangen mit Recht eine pünktliche
Lieferung. Daher ist es nur
folgerichtig, wenn wir auch eine
pünktliche Bezahlung erwarten.
Hierzu möchten wir auf ein Urteil
des Europäischen Gerichtshofs
vom April 2008 verweisen, in
dem festgestellt wird, dass eine
Rechnung nur pünktlich bezahlt
ist, wenn der Betrag bei Fälligkeit
auf dem Konto des Zahlungsempfängers
eingegangen ist.
Hirschvogel wird sich hier auch
EDV-gestützt weiter verstärken.
Im Juli 2009 begann die operative
Nutzung eines „Credit Management
Moduls“ in SAP. Hierbei
werden bereits vorhandene
Daten zum Zahlungsverhalten
ausgewertet und mit weiteren
Informationen von Kreditversicherungen
sowie Finanzkennzahlen
ergänzt, so dass ein tägliches
Limit errechnet und über
ein Monitoring beobachtet wird.
Weicht das tatsächliche Limit von
dem errechneten Limit ab, werden
entsprechende Maßnahmen
in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Vertrieb
eingeleitet.
Debtor Management –
Transparency Creates Trust
Systematic and active accounts
receivable management
is nowadays a central management
task, irrespective of company
size, and is an important
component of internal risk manage
ment. It begins with a credit
assessment that encompasses
both existing and new customers
and that is continually updated.
In addition, an individual
analysis of payment morale is
carried out at customer level.
This analysis is discussed with
the sales employees on a regular
basis. This enables risks to be recognized
early on and preventive
measures to be taken.
be crucial to their survival. Insufficient
transparency leads, among
other things, to credit insurance
companies reducing their limits or
even canceling them al together.
This results in some cautious
suppliers shortening their payment
targets immediately, which
can cause a company to quickly
fall into solvency problems.
Unfortunately, payment morale
is, on the whole, deteriorating.
There are various reasons for this.
Sometimes payment is made
late intentionally in order to protect
the company’s own liquidity;
sometimes a lack of solvency or
bad creditworthiness may mean
that payment cannot be made
earlier. System errors are rarely
the cause. Our customers rightly
demand punctual delivery. As a
logical consequence, we also expect
punctual payment. At this
point, we would like to refer to
a ruling of the European Court
of Justice from April 2008 which
states that an invoice is only paid
punctually when the amount owed
has been received on the account
of the payee when it is due.
Hirschvogel will use an IT system
to gain additional assistance in
this area. In July 2009, operative
use of a “Credit Management
Module” in SAP commenced.
This will involve the assessment
of existing data on payment morale.
This data will be expanded
upon with additional information
from credit insurance companies
and with financial performance
indicators so that a daily limit may
be calculated and observed via a
monitoring system. If the actual
limit deviates from the calculated
limit, appropriate measures will
be introduced in collaboration
with the sales department.
Particularly in view of the current
economic situation and of an increasing
number of insolvencies,
also among Hirschvogel customers
(something which we have
been distressed to hear about
several times already), the topics
of debtor management and transparency
are becoming more important
than ever before. Financing
partners such as banks and
credit insurance companies are
demanding comprehensive information,
as they are liable for
significant amounts. Our customers
and suppliers, too, are demanding
more and more information
in order to better assess the
creditworthiness and thus also
the delivery and payment capability
of their supply chain. Many
companies are not yet aware
that transparency with respect to
their own financial situation can To be continued on page 4
an realen Bauteilen gemacht,
nachdem diese mittels Finite-Element-Simulation
entworfen und
erste Muster gefertigt wurden. Bei
diesen Tests werden die Produkte
bis zum Versagen des Materials geprüft.
Hier kommt die Schadenskunde
zum Zug. Die Schadenskunde ermittelt,
wie und warum das Bauteil
im Versuch den Bruch erlitten hat.
Dies wiederum erlaubt Rückschlüsse
auf den Entwicklungsstand des
Teils. Ist der Bruch erst nach sehr
vielen Belastungszyklen eingetreten,
die die gestellten Forderungen
überschreiten, so kann gegebenenfalls
Werkstoff und somit Gewicht
eingespart werden. Oder waren
hier schon die Grenzen des Machbaren
erreicht? In wenigen Fällen
führt auch eine Inhomogenität des
Werkstoffs oder eine nicht optimale
Werkstoffauswahl zum Ausfall.
Dann kann mit Hilfe der Schadenskunde
der exakte Grund und ein
Hinweis für eine bessere Werkstoffauswahl
gegeben werden.
Die Suche nach der Ursache des Ausfalls
ist dann entscheidend, wenn bei
serienbegleitender Prüfung Teile auffällig
sind. Die Schadenskunde liefert
hier die Antwort auf die Frage nach
den Gründen. In allen bisher aufgetretenen
Fällen konnten Ursachen ermittelt
werden, die die Prüfung und
somit das Ergebnis beeinflusst hatten.
Mit diesen Erkenntnissen konnten
die Testbedingungen optimiert
werden, so dass die Ergebnisse
weniger streuen und statistische
Aus reißer minimiert wurden.
Ein weites Feld der Schadenskunde
sind Werkzeugschäden. In der
Umformtechnik unterliegen Werk-
Schadenskundliche Untersuchung
eines Schwingbruchs an einem
Aluminium-Schmiedeteil
zeuge einem starken Verschleiß
und fallen nach gewisser Zeit aus.
Um Werkzeuge in der Lebensdauer
zu optimieren, ist es unabdingbar,
zu ermitteln, wie der Verschleiß
abgelaufen ist und welcher Grund
letztendlich zum Lebensende des
Werkzeugs geführt hat. Die Kenntnis
darüber liefert Hinweise, wie
die Standmenge eines bestimmten
Werkzeugs erhöht werden kann.
Dadurch können Kosten eingespart
werden, die sich auf den Preis jedes
einzelnen Teils auswirken.
Auf diesem Weg hilft die schadenskundliche
Kompetenz, die bei
Hirschvogel in den letzten Jahren
aufgebaut wurde (Anschaffung
eines Rasterelektronenmikroskops,
Ausbildung von Spezialisten bezüglich
REM-Betrieb und Schadenskunde,
kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung
der Möglichkeiten), bei der
Entwicklung und Produktion innovativer
Failure Analysis for the
Customer
Failure analysis assists in developing high-quality products
that fulfill the most stringent quality and cost requirements. “As
good as required – as cost-efficient as possible” – it is under this
maxim that products are developed to the highest quality and
strength at Hirschvogel. The competing interests of cost pressure
and product requirements mean that possibilities for pushing
what is feasible to the very limits must be explored without losing
sight of customer demands or of the most cost-efficient solutions.
Failure analysis of fatigue fracture in
an aluminum forging
During product development,
comprehensive test series are
carried out on real parts after
these have been designed using
finite element simulations and
once initial samples have been
produced. These tests run until
material failure occurs. This is
where failure analysis comes in.
Failure analysis determines how
and why the part undergoing
tests failed. This, in turn, en ables
conclusions to be drawn regarding
the development status
of the part. If failure occurs only
after several load cycles, the
number of which exceeds the
requirements, this may point to
the possibility of achieving material
and weight savings. Or have
the limits of what is possible
been reached here already? In
a few cases, material inhomogeneity
or a less than optimum
choice of material may be
the cause of failure. When this
occurs, failure analysis can assist
in finding the precise reason
for the failure and in obtaining
indicators that point to a better
choice of material.
Analyzing the reason for failure is
particularly decisive in cases where
failed parts are detected in tests
undertaken during serial production.
Failure analysis provides possible
reasons for the failure. In all
cases which have arisen to date, it
was possible to determine factors
which affected the test and thus
the result thereof. These insights
were then used to optimize the
test conditions, leading to less scatter
and to a minimization of statistical
anomalies.
Another area of failure analysis
lies in tool failure. During forging,
tools are subjected to high
levels of wear and, after a certain
period of time, they fail. In
order to optimize tool life, it is
crucial to determine the course
of wear and what ultimately led
to tool failure. This knowledge
provides assistance in finding
solutions for increasing the die
life of a certain tool. This leads
to cost savings that have a positive
effect on the price of each
individual part.
In this way, the competence in
failure analysis that has been
built up at Hirschvogel over the
past few years (procurement of
a scanning electron microscope,
training of specialists with respect
to operation of the SEM
and failure analysis, continuous
further development of possibilities)
assists in the development
and production of innovative and
cost-efficient products.
Die Hirschvogel Automotive
Group stellt seit dem Jahr 1993
kontinuierlich auf der IAA PKW
aus. Ist dies in Anbetracht der
weltweiten Wirtschafts- und
Finanzkrise, die insbesondere
die Automobilzulieferindustrie
trifft, noch angebracht?
Wir sagen eindeutig „Ja“, da
erstens das Angebot des VDA,
nämlich die Teilnahme nur an den
Presse- und Fachbesuchertagen,
eine für uns attraktive Variante
ist. Zweitens ist es unser Ziel, in
diesen unsicheren Zeiten ein eindeutig
positives Signal für unsere
Kunden zu geben, indem wir uns
auf dieser wichtigen Messe präsentieren.
Es ist uns besonders wichtig, auf
unserem Stand B03 in Halle 4.1
alle weltweit neuen Produkte der
Hirschvogel Automotive Group
zu zeigen. Bestehende und potenzielle
Kunden sollen über unser
Leistungsspektrum und unsere
Leistungsfähigkeit gerade
in diesen schwierigeren Zeiten
kompetent und umfassend informiert
bleiben.
auf der Auto Shanghai 2009
Vom 20. – 28. April 2009 nahm
die Hirschvogel Automotive
Group im Rahmen des Deutschen
Pavillons an der Auto
Shanghai 2009 teil; die Organisation
erfolgte durch die IMAG
(Internationaler Messe- und Ausstellungsdienst).
Wir hatten dieses
Jahr einen größeren Mes sestand
als 2007 mit einem Flachbildschirm
als Blickfang, auf dem
unser Imagefilm in Deutsch, Englisch
und Chinesisch gezeigt wurde.
Während der Fachbesuchertage
waren wir mit zahlreichen
fachkundigen Mitarbeitern vertreten,
um alle Fragen der Besucher
zu beantworten. Die
Messe war hervorragend organisiert
und unser Stand sehr gut
besucht. Ein besonderes Highlight
war ein Interview mit der
Vogel Media Group. Die
diesjährige Messeteilnahme an
der Auto Shanghai war für uns
sehr wichtig, um die Hirschvogel
Automotive Group in China noch
bekannter zu machen.
of the global economic and financial
crisis that has hit the
automotive supply industry
particularly hard?
Our answer is a resounding
“Yes”. Firstly, this is because the
represents an attractive alternative.
Secondly, it is our aim in these
uncertain times to provide our
customers with a clearly positive
signal by presenting our company
at this important fair.
It is particularly important to us to
showcase all of the new products
of the Hirschvogel Automotive
Group world-wide at our booth B03
in hall 4.1. It is precisely in these
Armin Ihle and Dr. Jinhong Li during an
interview with The Vogel Media Group
From April 20 – 28, 2009, the
Hirschvogel Automotive Group participated
in the Auto Shanghai 2009
as a member of the German Pavi lion
which was organized by IMAG
(an international exhibition service
company). Drawing on the experience
gained during our first attendance
at this trade fair in 2007, we
opted this time for a more spacious
booth which included a large, eyecatching
screen showing our company
video in German, English and
Chinese. During the trade days of
the fair, we ensured that a greater
number of colleagues with a technical
background were present to answer
the questions posed by a specialist
public. The trade fair was
well-organized and the Hirschvogel
booth drew a large number of visitors.
One particular highlight was an
interview carried out with Hirschvogel
by The Vogel Media Group.
This year‘s participation at the Auto
Shanghai played an important role in
raising the profile of and generating
even more interest in the Hirschvogel
Auto motive Group in China.
