University and City of St. Gallen An der Universität St. Gallen – Hochschule für Wirtschafts-, Rechts- und Sozialwissenschaften (HSG) – sind heute 5’000 Studierende eingeschrieben, welche von rund 80 Professoren unterrichtet werden. In ihrer „Vision 2005“ formuliert die Universität St.Gallen das Ziel, „sich als international führende Wirtschaftsuniversität zu behaupten und bestmöglich ausgebildete Absolventen in Wissenschaft und Praxis zu entlassen“. Seit dem Wintersemester 2001/2002 basiert das Studium auf den drei Stufen Assessment, Bachelor und Master. Während das Assessmentjahr zu Beginn des Studiums die Eignung der neuen Studierenden für die Studiengänge an der Universität St. Gallen umfassend abklären soll, wählen die Studenten in der anschliessenden Bachelor-Stufe einen Schwerpunkt im Rahmen der Wirtschaft, öffentlichen Verwaltung und Rechtspflege. Die ein- bis zweijährigen Masterprogramme schliesslich sind forschungsbasiert und verlangen eigenständiges wissenschaftliches Arbeiten. Die Universität bietet mehrere Nachdiplom-Studiengänge an. St. Gallen ist das Zentrum der Ostschweiz: zwischen Bodensee und Zürich und inmitten der Vier-Länder-Region Deutschland, Liechtenstein, Österreich und Schweiz. Die Stadt besitzt mit ihrer historischen Altstadt und dem als Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO geschützten Klosterbezirk eines der bedeutendsten städtebaulichen Ensembles der Schweiz. Vor allem aber ist St. Gallen auch Wirtschaftszentrum. Nebst grossen internationalen Unternehmen dominieren innovative Klein- und Mittelbetriebe in zukunftsorientierten Branchen. Eine vielseitige Hotellerie- und Kongressinfrastruktur sowie attraktive Rahmenprogramme zeichnen St. Gallen als Standort für Messen, Kongresse und Tagungen aus. Zusammen mit dem grossen Wohlwollen der örtlichen Wirtschaft und Verwaltung bildet die Unterstützung der Universität St. Gallen das Fundament für die Aktivitäten des ISC. 17 At the University of St. Gallen for Business Administration, Economics, Law and Social Sciences, about 5,000 students are taught by some 80 professors. St. Gallen is the centre of Eastern Switzerland: located between Lake Constance and Zurich as well as in the four-country-region Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The historic old quarter of the town as well as the monastery, which is recognised by the UNESCO on the World Heritage List, make St. Gallen one of Switzerland’s most important urban architectural ensembles. However, St. Gallen is also a main business centre. Innovative small- and medium-sized future-oriented enterprises dominate besides internationally known conglomerates. Furthermore, St. Gallen features a versatile hotel and congressional infrastructure and has to offer a variety of attractive complementary programmes. Along with the goodwill of local business and administration, the support of the University of St. Gallen forms the basis for the activities of the ISC.
