Contemporary Nomadisms
Relations between Local Communities, Nation-states and
Global Cultural Flows. Contributors: M. Callari Galli,
Z. A. Franceschi, I.G. Pazzagli, B. Riccio, L. Urru
One of the most powerful and widespread ideal and political reasons
underlying the birth and building of the Nation-state has
been the concurrence of territory, culture and people. Lately, however,
one can observe a complete overturning of the relation
between territorial and social spaces. New forms of international
migrations, new systems of communication, new financial flows,
and new political entities constitute relations, which, by crossing
over the old borders, take on a territorial multipolarity as the area
of their sociocultural practices. Studying the new relations between
culture and territory implies laying stress on the effects of
processes of contemporary nomadisms at global, local, virtual,
and everyday life levels. The volume contains a collection of essays
that try to illustrate the trends of the ceaseless nomadisms
Ethnologie / Anthropology
spanning our world, the distinctive modalities by which they fuel
yet are also subjected to the complexity of contemporariness,
looking into an ethnography of the modern traffic of the incorporeal
but also of identity experiences and of state and state-like
practices enfolding them.
Migration and Marriage
Heterogamy and Homogamy in a Changing World
In a world in which migration and the mixing of peoples are increasing
while at the same time multicultural ideology has given
rise to the reassertion of putative primordial differences between
peoples, interesting questions are raised about the relationships
between political rhetoric and social action, groupness and individuality,
and the public and the private. The rate of intermarriage
is considered by sociologists the most important statistical
test of the strength or weakness of structural divisions within
societies. What do social anthropologists have to say about heterogamy
and homogamy in situations of movement and flux, and
what does this tell us about processes of boundary-definition?
The Islamic World and the West
Managing Religious and Cultural Identities in the Age of
Globalization
The Islamic World and the West – perhaps no other topic is
currently so often present in the headlines of the international
media. This timely volume, which brings together contributions
by 14 established Muslim and Western scholars, intends to present
a somewhat more positive outlook in the currently rather
strained relations between the Islamic world and Europe by drawing
on shared values and possibilities of cooperation in various
fields, such as reflected in worldview, education, economics,
multiculturalism, religious dialogue, politics, as well as security
issues, and it shall also contain a historical revaluation of some
of those contacts. It is the first project within the framework of
the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between
Switzerland’s University of Fribourg and the Asia-Europe Institute
(AEI) in Kuala Lumpur’s University of Malaya, Malaysia’s
oldest university.
The Perils of Face
Essays on Cultural Contact, Respect and Self-Esteem in
Southern Ethiopia
At the end of the 19th Century, southern Ethiopia was one of the
last areas to experience the “Scramble for Africa”, as Emperor
Menelik II sent his armies south to conquer and incorporate this
territory into his empire. For almost hundred years, the peoples of
southern Ethiopia had to live under the highly centralised rule of
the Emperor and later that of the Marxist Dergue regime, but this
changed in 1991, when a new constitution was proclaimed and
all barriers of class, gender, ethnic affiliation, religion and place
of birth were officially abolished. But how can such a transformation
to a new social order be achieved? What are its obstacles
and what are its prospects? To answer this question it is indispensable
to know how the culturally different peoples of Ethiopia
remember their past, and what conceptions they entertain of each
other. The present essays try to address this issue. In particular,
they explore the dangers inherent in situations of cultural contact
and examine how the powerful notions of pride, honor, name, and
self-esteem come into play, as people struggle to maintain their
identity, individually or as a group. The master trope for this kind
of sensitivity and vulnerability in social and cultural interaction is
“face”. This is why the volume is entitled “The perils of face”.
