Electrothermal Simulation of a Battery Pack for HEV/EV
L. Kostetzer, E. Rudnyi (CADFEM GmbH, Grafing)
High power energy storage systems are necessary for the new generation of
hybrid/electric vehicles. Lithium ion batteries have the advantage of high energy
density, good aging characteristics and high efficiency, but at the same time in
order to guarantee a safe and efficient operation, a battery management system
must be used. In this workshop we start with ANSYS Workbench and
consider how an efficient thermal model of a battery pack can be developed
there by means of one-dimensional CFD elements. Then we present model
reduction to develop automatically a compact thermal model for use at system
level simulation. In the second part of the workshop we consider electrical
models of a battery in Simplorer, starting from highly accurate physical model
and going to impedance and empirical battery models. Finally we couple in
Simplorer an electrical battery model with the reduced thermal model and
perform efficient electrothermal simulation that can be further employed
during the development of the battery management system.
