The best way to discover Basel is on foot. This particularly applies to the
old town, whose many places of interest are very close together.
In Basel there are fi ve offi cial, marked tours of the old town which were
established at the end of the 1970s by various offi cial departments, fi rms
and Basel Tourismus. They all begin at the Marktplatz, are identifi ed by
a coloured picture of an historic Basel personality, and have a duration of
30 to 90 minutes.

The Basler Jakob Burckhardt (1818–97) was among the most eminent
cultural historians of his time.
