Vorwort
Preface
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
As the new director of the Laser-Laboratory Göttingen, it is a great pleasure for me to
present you the annual report 2010. Please allow me a private statement: The Laser-
Laboratory is an institute of international reputation and I am proud of being a part of it now.
The Laser-Laboratory was originally founded to perform applied research on excimer and
dye lasers. Today, a much wider area of research is covered: For example, we generated
nergy densities of several J/cm² at 13.5 nm wavelength with a table-top source and
performed stability tests on EUV optics for next generation semiconductor lithography.
Further, we developed a chip for free-flow-electrophoresis within the framework of the BMBF
funded joint research project FFE-Chips. This chip is now brought to the market by one of the
project partners. The project “PERFECT”, as another example, has been elected by the
Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as a success story within the framework of
the ZIM funding module.
The worldwide economic crises affected, with a certain delay, also the Laser-Laboratory.
Nevertheless, or particularly because of that, we can be proud of the economic development
of our institute. Declines in the contract research segment were well compensated by publicly
funded research.
The Laser-Laboratory owes its outstanding scientific and economic performance first and
foremost to its employees. I would like to express my deepest thanks to them.
Our Institute was always closely connected to the University of Göttingen and the Max
Planck Society. This was the case in former times and I am convinced that this is also
important for the future. An institute like the Laser-Laboratory, positioned at the interface
between research and industry, cannot exist without being actively involved in the Göttingen
scientific landscape, especially the cutting-edge research. Having worked at the Max Planck
Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and being actively involved in local research centers, like
the collaborative research centre Nanoscale Photonic Imaging, the DFG research center
Molecular Physiology of the Brain as well as the Bernstein Focus Neurotechnology, I am
confident to make a worthwhile contribution to this connection. We have completed the first
step in this direction by establishing the new department of Optical Nanoscopy.
The project descriptions in this annual report will give you, as a company, a thorough insight
what you can expect from us. Offering solutions based on cutting-edge scientific
developments, we are looking forward to receive demanding tasks from you.
I hope you will enjoy reading this annual report and wish you every success in 2011.
Yours
