Napoleon Coste is considered to be the<br />
most significant French guitarist of the<br />
l9th century. Biographical information<br />
about him is unfortunately scarce. It is<br />
known that his mother played the guitar a<br />
bit. and gave him his first instruclions on<br />
the instrument. After having lived for a<br />
time in Valenciennes, he established<br />
himself around 1830 in Paris, at that time<br />
the Mecca fbr guitarists. Here he studied<br />
under Femando Sor, one of the most<br />
famous guitarists of his time, and intensified<br />
his knowledge of harmony and<br />
(ounterpoint. In a variety of his compositions<br />
is a strong influence of his friend and<br />
teacher to be recognized. His great capacity<br />
for musical expressions is already<br />
particularly noticeable in his early works,<br />
exemplified by the opus 10, Scherzo and<br />
Pastorale.<br />

A native of Milan, this guitarist and singer<br />
travelled for many years throughout<br />
northern Italy. He also spent time in Paris<br />
and London, important cities for guitarists<br />
at that time. As a composer Nava is today<br />
relatively unknown although his works for<br />
the solo-guitar extend all the way to opus<br />
70, not to mention his countless works fbr<br />
chamber music, particularly for flute or<br />
violin and guitar.<br />
