Which compositions are included on the CD?<br />
It’s a tradition that one of our favourite tango<br />
composers, ASTOR PIAZZOLLA, takes the<br />
centrepiece of this CD. With our arrangement<br />
of the series of pieces Las cuatro Estaciones<br />
porteñas (“The Four Seasons”) a new and<br />
interesting encounter between two composers<br />
(Vivaldi und Piazzolla) is brought to life – from<br />
the baroque age to the present, from Europe to<br />
South America.<br />
Tango pour Claude brings a hint of jazz to the<br />
CD. The virtuoso accordionist, jazz musician<br />
and composer RICHARD GALLIANO wrote<br />
the piece “Vie Violence” (Tango pour Claude)<br />
for his friend, the French chansonnier Claude<br />
Nougaro, in 1993. He later performed the piece<br />
himself as a farewell for his late friend. “Tango<br />
pour Claude” turned out to be a breakthrough<br />
for Galliano, both with a wide audience as well<br />
as with so-called aficionados. It was arranged<br />
for trio con abbandono by HANS-GÜNTHER<br />
KÖLZ.<br />
PETER LUDWIG’s Lisboa is a nightly stroll<br />
through old Lisbon. The piece begins as a Fado<br />
Vadio, which is still sung today in the bars in the<br />
old part of Lisbon as an expression of saudade,<br />
the Portuguese version of “weltschmerz”.<br />
Shortly thereafter, the piece gains momentum<br />
and becomes a relentlessly driving tango,<br />
which can only be curbed by the clarinet at the<br />
very end and is then brought back to the dying<br />
strains of the Saudade.<br />
“Every type of folk music is beautiful, but I have<br />
to say that Jewish music is exceptional! It’s so<br />
multifaceted, can appear joyful but is really<br />
deeply tragic. It is almost always laughter<br />
through tears”, this is how Dmitri Shostakovich<br />
describes klezmer and expresses exactly what<br />
we feel. And therefore we’ve also included<br />
another Klezmer Suite on this CD. The Suite<br />
takes us to Romania with klezmer standards<br />
such as a sirba, a popular klezmer swing<br />
melody, and even a fiery bulgar.<br />
The Hungarian Czárdás Fantasie by AUGUST<br />
NÖLCK, with a highly virtuosic solo performed<br />
by our cellist Anne-Lise, shows a new facet<br />
of the chamber music possibilities of our<br />
ensemble.<br />
BRACK OWLBICK’s quirky arrangement of<br />
Wut über den verlorenen Groschen (Rage<br />
Over a Lost Penny) by LUDWIG VAN<br />
BEETHOVEN amusingly weaves well-known<br />
motifs of different musical styles into the piece.<br />
