The surprising, witty and unconventional<br />
capriccio is presented here with lots of humour<br />
and exaggeration.<br />
Also included on this CD is LEONARD<br />
BERNSTEIN’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.<br />
It was premiered as his first-ever piece in 1942.<br />
The first movement with classical traits is serious<br />
and lyrical in character. The second movement<br />
(in two parts) is at first melancholic and free,<br />
then moves on to Bernstein’s magic style in<br />
5/8 which is jazzy and seemingly carefree. The<br />
accordion, which takes the part of the piano,<br />
accentuates the density of the composition and<br />
fuses the two instruments together even more<br />
than the piano.<br />
An energetic depiction of skiing in open<br />
terrain… Off Pist by SVANTE HENRYSON is<br />
an audacious, rocking, jazzy piece with formal<br />
classical influences with the performance<br />
instruction “molto ritmico e funky”. As a work<br />
of today it shows our affinity to new music and<br />
employs a very unorthodox use of microphones.<br />
With a microphone on the bell of the clarinet<br />
and the cello played through an amp like a<br />
guitar, the sounds of both instruments become<br />
rock-like and distorted.<br />
In our closing piece, The Typewriter by LEROY<br />
ANDERSON, the listener might be reminded<br />
of the film “Who’s Minding the Store” (1963)<br />
with Jerry Lewis. In one scene, the comedian<br />
types rhythmically on the keys of an imaginary<br />
typewriter. In our arrangement we use a real<br />
typewriter, accompanied by the register keys of<br />
the accordion.<br />
