Freunde, sehr
geehrte Besucher
der Oktoberfest 7s,
wir haben die Ehre, Sie herzlich im Münchner
Olympiastadion zu den Oktoberfest 7s begrüßen
zu dürfen. Bereits zum zweiten Mal treten
in dieser wunderschönen Arena die weltbesten
Nationalmannschaften im olympischen Siebener-Rugby
an, um den Oktoberfest-7s-Titel
untereinander auszuspielen.
Als vor genau 40 Jahren zur Wiesn-Zeit
erstmals ein Siebener-Turnier mit lediglich
vier Teilnehmern unter dem Namen Oktoberfest
7s ausgetragen wurde, konnte niemand
ahnen, wie sich dieses Event eimal entwickeln
würde. Dass mittlerweile Mannschaften wie
der Olympiasieger Fidschi und Weltmeister
Neuseeland hier in München antreten, ist der
Lohn für viele Jahre harte Arbeit der zahllosen
Involvierten.
Genausowenig hätte jemand erahnen können,
welche großartige Entwicklung das deutsche
Siebener-Nationalteam nehmen würde.
Eine deutsche Rugby-Nationalmannschaft,
die auf heimischem Boden vor zehntausenden
Zuschauern gegen die besten Teams der Welt
antreten und dabei alles andere als chancenlos
sein würde, hätte sich damals niemand erträumt.
Der amtierende Europameister baut
an diesem Wochenende auf Ihre lautstarke
Unterstützung.
Aber egal, mit welchem
Team Sie es halten – wir hoffen,
gemeinsam mit Ihnen die
Oktoberfest 7s auch in diesem
Jahr zu einem farbenfrohen
und friedlichen Spektakel
machen zu können und damit
dazu beizutragen, dass dieser
so wunderbare Sport in
Deutschland mehr Verbreitung
findet.

visitors of the
Oktoberfest 7s,
We are honored to welcome you at the Munich
Olympic Stadium. For the second time this beautiful
arena will see the world’s best National
Sides compete for the Oktoberfest 7s title.
When the very first Sevens tournament was
held under the name Oktoberfest 7s in Munich
exactly forty years ago, nobody could have
dreamt of what this event would become one
day. Being able to host world class teams such
as the World Champion All Blacks Sevens or
the reigning Olympic Champions Fiji is the
yield of years of hard work by many people
involved behind the scenes.
Neither could anyone have expected the
magnificent inroads the German National
Sevens Team has made in recent years. Competing
at home in front of tens of thousands of
supporters against the best teams in world rugby
and standing a chance against these teams is
proof of the massive improvements made. The
German team is building on the support of the
home fans this weekend.
But whatever team you are ultimately cheering
for – we hope to make the Oktoberfest 7s
a colourful and peaceful event once more this
year and contribute to the growth of this wonderful
sport in Germany.

Rugby gehört zu den beliebtesten Mannschaftssportarten
der Welt und ist auch bei
uns spürbar im Aufwind. Deutschland ist heuer
sogar zum ersten Mal Europameister im olympischen
Siebener-Rugby geworden. Umso mehr
freut sich die Sportstadt München, dass nach
der erfolgreichen Premiere 2017 nun wieder die
Oktoberfest 7s im Münchner Olympiastadion
stattinden. Gleich zu Beginn der Wiesn wird
unsere Stadt damit erneut zum Schauplatz von
Deutschlands größtem Rugby-Event, zu dem
auch viele Rugby-Fans aus Deutschland und der
ganzen Welt nach München kommen, um die
einzigartige Verbindung von Oktoberfest und
Weltklasse-Rugby zu genießen.
Die weltbesten Nationalmannschaften sind
hier am Start: Neben Europameister Deutschland
und Titelverteidiger Australien auch der
amtierende Weltmeister Neuseeland, Olympiasieger
Fidschi, Rugby-Mutterland England und
die Spitzenteams aus Frankreich, Südafrika und
den USA. Ein Amateur-Turnier und ein tolles
Rahmenprogramm mit Kinder Village und
Oktoberfest Village werden ebenfalls dazu
beitragen, dass München wieder ein großes
Rugby-Fest feiern kann. Und ich bin sicher,
München als weltofene und gastfreundliche
Sportstadt wird diesem spektakulären Event
gerade zum Wiesn-Auftakt auch einen besonders
attraktiven Rahmen bieten.
Ich wünsche allen Besucherinnen und
Besuchern packende Spiele und viel Spaß bei
den Oktoberfest 7s. Die teilnehmenden
Mannschaften und alle Gäste
heiße ich dazu auch
als Schirmherr sehr

Rugby is one of the most popular team
sports around the globe and has recently
become increasingly more popular in Germany
as well. The German team even won the European
Championship for the very irst time
in July. More reasons for Munich as a sports
city to welcome the return of the Oktoberfest 7s
tournament to the Olympic Stadium after the
successful inaugural event two years ago. Right
when the Oktoberfest kicks of at the Theresienwiese,
our city will once more become the
site for Germany’s biggest Rugby event, which
will be attended from fans from all over Germany
and around the world. These fans will
enjoy the unique combination of the Oktoberfest
and world-class Rugby.
The very best national teams in the world
will be competing at the tournament. Apart from
European Champions Germany and defending
Champions Australia, the World Champions
New Zealand, Olympic Gold Medalist Fiji, the
home of Rugby England and further world class
teams in France, South Africa and the USA will
vie for the Munich title. An amateur tournament
and an excellent match day entertainment
program will make for a great Rugby festival
that Munich can celebrate. I am convinced
that Munich as a hospitable and cosmopolitan
city will be the perfect place for such an event.
I sincerely hope that all visitors will be able to
witness exciting matches and thoroughly enjoy
their visit to the Olympic Stadium. As the patron
of the Oktoberfest 7s I would like

2017 fand das erste Profiturnier Oktoberfest
7s im Münchner Olympiastadion statt.
Australien konnte sich im Finale gegen
Olympiasieger Fidschi durchsetzen. Doch
das Turnier im olympischen Siebener-Rugby
hat eine viel längere Geschichte. Bereits
seit 40 Jahren wird in der Bayern-Metropole
zur Wiesn-Zeit der Oktoberfest-7s-Titel
ausgespielt, anfangs nur unter Amateuren,
aber seit jeher war das Teilnehmer-Feld so
international, wie die Wiesn selbst.
Mittlerweile spielen die Amateure das
Classics-Turnier unweit der traditionsreichen
Münchner Arena aus. Das Endspiel
wird aber auch dieses Mal direkt im Olympiastadion
zwischen den Profi-Matches der
Oktoberfest 7s ausgetragen.
Die Idee, die weltbesten Teams für ein
Profi-Turnier nach München zu holen, geht
auf eine Gruppe deutscher Geschäftsleute
um Mathias Entenmann zurück, die alle
einst selbst für Deutschland Rugby spielten.
Dank ihnen hat Deutschland nun ein Rugby-Turnier
auf Weltklasse-Niveau.
2017 saw the inaugural Oktoberfest 7s pro
tournament at the iconic Munich Olympic
Stadium. Australia crowned themselves
champions with a surprise victory in the
final over Olympic Gold Medallists Fiji.
However, Sevens Rugby during Oktoberfest
has a much longer tradition. Exactly
40 years ago, the very first Oktoberfest 7s
amateur tournament was held in the city
of Munich during the world famous beer
fest. From the get-go, the tournament was
as international, as the Oktoberfest itself.
The amateur tournament still exists today
and is now played as the Oktoberfest 7s
Classics just a stone’s throw away from the
Olympic Stadium in plain sight of the impressive
arena, where the final of the Classics
will be held. The idea of bringing the
world’s best international Sevens teams to
Germany goes back to a group of German
business men led by Mathias Entenmann,
who all played for the German national
team. Thanks to them, Germany now has a
world-class Rugby tournament.

German Sevens and
Fifteens national
team. He’s also one
of the select few
German players, who
have faced the Fiji
Sevens team before.
2017 he retired from
international Rugby
and became part of
the coaching set-up
of the German team
debuting at the
Oktoberfest 7s. Now
he’s in charge as the
caretaker coach of
hosts Germany.
Die Erinnerungen an die Oktoberfest
7s 2017 dürften für Dich ja noch frisch
sein, damals bist Du nur wenige Monate
nach Deinem letzten Auftritt als Kapitän
der Mannschaft ins Trainerteam gewechselt
und hast im Olympiastadion
dein Coaching-Debüt gegeben.
VON GRUMKOW: Für mich war das etwas
ganz Neues. Sicherlich auch ungewohnt.
An der Seitenlinie zu stehen und dann direkt
bei so einem großen Turnier auf heimischem
Boden, ist schon aufregend. Es hat mir damals
unfassbar viel Spaß bereitet und Lust auf
mehr gemacht.
Die Oktoberfest 7s sind Euer einziger
Auftritt vor heimischem Publikum. Wie
groß ist die Vorfreude auf das Turnier?
Die Jungs und wir im Trainerteam freuen
uns unglaublich. Natürlich ist es vor den eigenen
Fans etwas ganz Besonderes, gerade
weil wir sonst so viel unterwegs sind und nie
die Möglichkeit haben, vor Freunden und
Familie zu spielen. Die sehen uns immer nur
vorm Bildschirm. Wir wollen uns daheim
gut präsentieren, befreit aufspielen und ein
tolles Turnier abliefern.
Your memories of the 2017 Oktoberfest
7s should be quite vivid, given it was a
pretty special tournament for you. Only
a few months after your last outing as the
German captain you retired and went
into the coaching setup, making your debut
here at the Olympic Stadium.
VON GRUMKOW: Standing on the sidelines
for the first time and at such a big tournament
at home to start off with, was totally
new. It was a great event and made me hungry
for more.
For the German team the Oktoberfest
7s will be the only outing this year in
front of the home fans – how big was
the anticipation before tournament?
The boys and us as the coaching staff are
hugely excited. Of course it’s something
special, playing in front of your own fans,
particularly because we are away that much
and never have the opportunity to play in
front of family and friends. They usually
only follow us through the TV screen. We
want to put on a good show, give it our all
and deliver a great tournament.

The German team will be facing Olympic
Champions Fiji already in the pool
stages. You had your own encounter
with them in the past – will you be able
to give your men any hints on how to
defend the offload experts?
Exactly. It was in 2005 at the World Games
in Duisburg. They showed up with their
best team, including Waisale Serevi, the
best Fiji player ever. Whether I’ll be able to
give the boys any specific advice? Probably
not, but they’ve been playing at international
level for a while.
After having finished last season with
the European title, the new season kicks
off for your team with the Oktoberfest
7s. Given your high ambitions, how

Es geht für Euch schon in der Gruppenphase
gegen Olympiasieger Fidschi.
Du hast ja bereits Erfahrung mit den
Fidschianern gemacht. Kannst Du dem
Team Tipps geben, wie es gegen die Offload-Spezialisten
spielen soll?
Das war 2005 bei den World Games in
Duisburg. Die hatten alles dabei, was Rang
und Namen hatte, unter anderem Waisele
Serevi, den besten Fidschi-Spieler aller Zeiten.
Geheimtipps kann ich eher nicht geben.
Die Jungs spielen alle auf internationalem
Niveau, und das nicht erst seit gestern.

Nachdem Ihr die letzte Saison mit dem
EM-Titel beendet habt, geht es in München
in eine weitere wichtige Spielzeit.
Wie sehr hilft es für Eure weiteren Ziele,
direkt in einem derart hochwertigen
Teilnehmerfeld spielen zu können?
Wir hatten seitdem ein paar Wochen, um
die Batterien wieder aufzuladen und ein wenig
weg vom Rugby zu kommen – aber dafür
zuletzt eine kurze und umso intensivere
Vorbereitung auf die Oktoberfest 7s. Die
Motivation, vor eigenem Publikum gegen
solche Gegner zu spielen, ist ein riesiger Antrieb
für uns. Das hat man auch im Training
gesehen, und das wird uns auch helfen für
die weiteren Ziele wie Hongkong.

field of opponents here in Munich?
We had a couple of weeks off to recharge
the batteries and get some time off Rugby
for a while – and then a short and sharp
preparation for this tournament. The motivation
to play these sort of teams in front of
our own fans will be a huge driving factor
for us. That was obvious in practice and it
will help us for our future goals, such as the
Hong Kong 7s.
What is your goal in terms of the result
at this tournament?
We want to give it our all, maybe cause an
upset against some of the big names and
possibly make it through to the semifinals.
We are absolutely aware that we’re going
into these match-ups as underdogs, but
with our own supporters backing us, why
shouldn’t we be capable of pulling off a surprise?

Uns ist bewusst, dass wir gegen die absoluten
Top-Teams als Underdog ins Rennen
gehen, aber warum soll uns mit den eigenen
Fans im Rücken nicht auch die eine oder
andere Überraschung gelingen?

Die Unparteiischen
im Rugby
Die Rugby-Regeln
Die Schiedsrichter haben im Rugby eine
besondere Stellung. Nur die Kapitäne beider
Teams dürfen mit den Unparteiischen
reden. Ihre Entscheidungen werden hingenommen.
Die Zuschauer im TV können
den Frauen und Männern mit der Pfeife
zuhören, da sie mit Mikrofonen verkabelt
sind. Dazu gibt es im Rugby schon seit mehr
als zehn Jahren die Hilfe des Video-Schiedsrichters
– dieser kann mit einer Handgeste,
die einen Fernseher darstellt, dessen Hilfe
einfordern. Gerade wenn es um das Erzielen
von Versuchen oder schwere Fouls
geht, wird der „TMO“ eingesetzt.
Die Grundprinzipien des Rugbys sind schnell
erklärt. Auf einem Feld, das der Größe eines
Fußballplatzes entspricht, versuchen zwei
Teams per Versuch (durch Ablegen des Balles
im gegnerischen Malfeld) oder per Dropkick
durch die Stangen mehr Zähler zu erzielen als
der Gegner. Die Defensive darf mit physisch
robusten Mitteln versuchen, den Gegner zu
stoppen – die wichtigsten Regeln:
• Gepasst werden darf nur nach hinten,
kicken darf man nach vorne.
• Punkte erzielt man per Versuch (5 Punkte), der per
Dropkick (2 Punkte) erhöht werden kann, oder man
trifft einen Straftritt durch die Stangen (3 Punkte).
• Der Gegner darf per Tackle unsanft zu Boden gebracht
werden, jedoch nur unterhalb der Schultern und mit
Einsatz der Arme („Shoulder Checks“ sind verboten).
• Abseits ist, wer beim Kick vor dem Kicker
steht, oder nach einem Tackle nicht auf
seiner Seite des Rucks bleibt.*
• Nur im Siebener-Rugby gilt: Die Spielzeit beträgt
2x7 Minuten, und beide Teams haben jeweils sieben
Spieler und fünf Auswechselspieler. Bei einer gelben
Karte gibt es eine 2-Minuten-Zeitstrafe, und die
Mannschaft, die einen Versuch legt, kickt wieder an.

Referees
in Rugby
The officials in Rugby have a special role.
Only the two captains on the pitch are allowed
to address them. Referee decisions
have to be accepted by the players without
any discussions whatsoever. The TV audience
can listen to the referees addressing
the players throughout the match via the
referee microphone. Rugby has already
introduced the video referee ten years ago
and it’s widely regarded as a huge success –
the „third match official“ is used at the referee’s
request on close calls with regards
to tries scored or foul play that might result
in a card.

Laws of Rugby
The general idea of Rugby is not hard to grasp.
Two teams trying to score more points than
the opponent on a soccer-sized pitch by either
grounding the ball in the opponent’s in-goal
(worth 5 points) or by dropkicking the ball
through the goalposts (3 points). On defense
players can bring down their opponents by
tackling them below the shoulders. The most
important laws are:
• Passes can only be made backwards,
players can kick ahead though.
• Players score by either putting the ball
down behind the opponent’s goal line
(5 points), or drop-kicking it through the
uprights (2 points for a conversion-kick and
3 for a drop goal during play or a penalty).
• Players can tackle opponents below the
shoulders, however using the arms in the tackle
is compulsory, shoulder checks are illegal.
• Players are offside if they are ahead of the kicker
or not behind the hindmost foot of the ruck.*
• Specific Sevens Laws: A game consists of two
halves of 7 minutes, teams have 7 starting and
5 bench players. A yellow card results in a 2 minute
suspension, the scoring team performs the restart.

Der Titelverteidiger hat es sich nicht nehmen
lassen, auch diesmal bei den Oktoberfest
7s anzutreten. Die Jungs aus Down Under
waren das Überraschungsteam im Jahr
2017: Damals schaltete Australien nacheinander
Frankreich, England und Olympiasieger
Fidschi aus und sicherte sich damit
den verdienten Sieg.
Debütant Maurice Longbottom wurde
zum absoluten Shootingstar des Turniers
– dem nur 1,72 Meter großen Spielmacher

Tim Walsh
wurde einst gesagt, er sei zu klein für Rugby.
2017 strafte er seine Kritiker in München
Lügen und spielte namhaften Kontrahenten
reihenweise Knoten in die Beine. Nach einer
durchwachsenen World-Series-Saison
2018/2019, die mit einem Hoch und der
Finalteilnahme bei den London 7s endete,
wollen die Aussies die Olympiasaison mit
der Titelverteidigung beginnen. Mit ihrem
Kreativ-Spiel und Spielwitz dürften sie auch
diesmal zu den Favoriten zählen.

The men from down under will compete as
the defending champions at this years Oktoberfest
7s, after they were crowned the
surprise winners two years ago. On their
way to the Munich title they overcame
heavy favourites England and Fiji and one
man in particular stood out for the Green
and Gold. Scrum half Maurice Longbottom
made his debut at the Munich Olympic Stadium
– standing at a modest 5’8 the Aussie
playmaker was once deemed too small to

play rugby, nevertheless had a huge impact
on the Australian game. His dancing feet
helped him weave through the defensive
lines of supposedly superior opponents.
Will the Aussies overcome an even better
roster of teams competing in Munich this
time? Not having secured their Olympic
ticket yet, Australia has to get on their feet
quickly this season, because the Oceania
qualifier is only five weeks away from the
Oktoberfest 7s.

Das Mutterland des Rugbys zählt auch bei
den diesjährigen Oktoberfest 7s zu den
Favoriten im Münchner Olympiastadion.
Die traditionell in Weiß auflaufende
Mannschaft von Erfolgscoach Simon Amor
brach 2017 Fans des Gastgebers die Herzen,
indem sie im Viertelfinale des Turniers
Deutschland bezwang. Doch dann setzte es
für die Engländer im Halbfinale gegen den
späteren Turniersieger Australien eine unerwartet
hohe Niederlage.
COACH:

Der amtierende Vizeweltmeister hat mit
den Männern aus Down Under also durchaus
noch eine Rechnung offen und trifft
dieses Jahr bereits an Tag 1 in der Gruppenphase
erneut auf die ehemalige Kronkolonie.
Ob sich der kompromisslose und
knallharte Spielstil der Engländer gegen
den Spielwitz der Australier beim diesjährigen
größten Rugby-Turnier Deutschlands
durchsetzen wird? Ein umkämpftes Match
steht bevor.

biggest Rugby event. The runner up
at last year’s Rugby World Cup 7s already
participated at the 2017 inaugural Oktoberfest
7s, making it all the way to the semi final
and crushing the home fans’ hopes along
the way, by defeating hosts Germany in the
quarterfinal. Fresh off their victorious run
at the European Olympic Qualifier in Colomiers,

season on a positive note in Germany.
Known for their tactical discipline, physical
game and superior fitness England will
be looking to rectify their 2017 defeat against
Australia in the semi finals, in which they
were outclassed and suffered a heavy loss

title would be the perfect start to the Olympic
season after not having won any events at
the Sevens World Series last season.

team will compete in Munich as the

Schon 2017 zählten die Springbokke, wie
das Team vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung
genannt wird, zu den absoluten Publikumslieblingen
in München. Damals gelang Südafrika
nach einer Halbfinal-Niederlage gegen
Fidschi der Sieg im kleinen Finale und
damit Rang drei. Die darauffolgende World-
Series-Saison beendete das Team von Trainer
Neil Powell auf Platz eins, konnte den
Titel aber dieses Jahr nicht verteidigen,
nachdem es zuletzt stark verjüngt wurde

und Routiniers wie Kyle Brown die Rugby-Stiefel
an den Nagel hängten.
Doch die junge Mannschaft brachte zuletzt
wieder genau die Attribute aufs Feld,
für die das Team bekannt ist: Unglaublich

der Spieler als auch bei Passstafetten
und Kombinationen. Nicht umsonst
trägt das Team auch den Spitznamen

The South African team are affectionately
called Blitzboks by their supporters and
they do deserve the flatering nickname.
Not only does the South African team have
some of the quickest players on their roster,
they also play lightning-fast as a collective
unit, with quick hands and swift combinations.
That style of play got them all the way
to the semifinals at the 2017 Oktoberfest 7s,
where their good run of form did not get
them past Olympic Champions Fiji.

Already at the inaugural Oktoberfest
rugby spectacle two years ago, the SA team
was one of the most popular teams amongst
the fans at the iconic Olympic Stadium. Not
only their fans would like to see them go

Bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio,
South Africa is aiming for more this time –
what better way to kick off the season for
Neil Powell’s men than by claiming the Munich
title at the second attempt?

they’ve won last season’s World Series and
on their day, nobody can beat them. At least
that’s how their former coach Ben Ryan
described the team he coached to Olympic
glory in Rio. And in fact it’s hard to disagree
with Ryan, given Fiji’s unique style of play,
their offloading-prowess and their abrasive
physical game. Fiji are a very special team
and wherever they go, they can count on
the loyal support of their fans.

Fiji’s vocal fans were amongst the most
prominent group of supporters at the 2017
inaugural Oktoberfest 7s. While they had a
lot to cheer during their team’s run to the
final, they ultimately had to cope with the
bitter disappointment of losing out to Australia
in the final. This time Gareth Baber’s
men want to start off their Olympic season
with a title and will give it their all on the
Olympic Stadium pitch. They’ll be red hot
favourites for this year’s Munich crown.

Man spricht gerne von Champagner-Rugby,
wenn les Bleus auf dem Feld anfangen
zu zaubern. Das Team aus der Grande Nation
zählt seit Langem zur erweiterten Weltspitze
und hat immer ein paar Kunststücke
für seine Fans parat. Beim berühmten Rugby-Turnier
in Hongkong reichte es dieses
Jahr für den Finaleinzug. Doch wie beim
World-Series-Event in Vancouver, bei dem
Frankreich ebenfalls bis ins Endspiel kam,
reichte es am Ende nicht für den Titel.

Bei den O7s 2017 beendete der spätere
Gewinner Australien den ersten Titel-Anlauf
der Franzosen in München bereits
im Viertelfinale. In der Platzierungsrunde
mussten sie sich einer befreit aufspielenden
deutschen Mannschaft geschlagen geben.
Da die Franzosen so nah an der eigenen
Heimat spielen, haben sie dementsprechend
viel Unterstützung auf den Rängen. Mit ihnen
sollte man also rechnen bei den diesjährigen
Oktoberfest 7s.

Champagne Rugby is what the French are
known for around the world. On their day
they can be world-beaters and put on a fine
show, as they proved at the famous Hong
Kong 7s earlier this year, making it all the
way into the final. However the French
team also has its off-days marred by unexpected
losses and their 2017 title run in Munich
ended prematurely.
They will be looking to improve on their
8th place finish from 2017 and will have the
2019 OKTOBERFEST 7s

chance to exact revenge on the hosts on day
one, when they square off with Germany in
the pool stages. But there will also be Olympic
Champions Fiji and World Series runners
up USA in their way to the semi final
qualification. But don’t count the French
team out just yet – they will be able to count
on their support on the stands playing so
close to home and their impressive bag of
tricks has already gotten them past mighty
opposition countless times before.

den Spitznamen Wolfpack: Die Jungs verteidigen

The hosts are looking to improve on their
fifth place finish at the 2017 Oktoberfest 7s,
when they beat France, England and Argentina
along the way. Ever since Rugby
Sevens became an Olympic discipline exactly
ten years ago, the German team has been
on the rise. Making use of the country’s extensive
network of Olympic Training Centres
and government support for Olympic
Athletes, a golden generation of players
from the two biggest Rugby hotbeds Heidelberg
and Hannover made their way into
the realm of world class teams.
Known for their aggressive style of defense,
they’ve earned the nickname Wolfpack,
because when the opposition is in possession,
the German team mercilessly hunts
them down. After their European Championship
winning run this summer, they will
face Fiji for only the second time in their
history. An upset against the current World
Series Winners would be a perfect start.

Das US-Team hat sich in den letzten Jahren
seit der Aufnahme von Rugby ins olympische
Programm sukzessive bis in die absolute
Weltspitze vorgearbeitet. In der abgelaufenen
Saison konnten die Eagles in fünf
der zehn Endspiele auf der World Series
einziehen und waren damit das konstanteste
Team. Die Männer um Trainer Friday
sind vor allem als rasantes Team bekannt –
und haben mit Carlin Isles und Perry Baker
zwei pfeilschnelle Asse an Bord.

Doch die USA entwickelten sich in den
letzten Jahren auch insgesamt zu einem
absoluten Weltklasse-Team. Mit den zwei
Spielmachern Folau Niua und Madison
Hughes, sowie einer Reihe weiterer Topspieler,
sind sie mittlerweile eine der komplettesten
Mannschaften auf der World
Series. Die diesjährigen Oktoberfest 7s werden
ihr erster Auftritt auf deutschem Boden
sein. Die US-Boys zählen definitiv zum Favoritenkreis.

The USA have been the rising superpower
in Sevens recently. With the Olympic inclusion
of Rugby’s short form, the country
has been investing heavily in the sport and
they have the results to show for. They only
missed out by a whisker on winning their
first World Series overall title to Fiji. However
reaching five out of ten finals on the
World Series last season, made them the
most consistent team on the circuit. Mike
Friday’s men have made a name for themselves
by having some of the quickest players
in World Rugby on their team.
But the Eagles have become a much more
complete rugby team recently with world
class distributors, some heavy hitters and a
whole host of other class acts in their team.
This year will be their first outing on German
soil, not having competed in 2017, but
given their recent form, they will count
amongst the favourites for the Munich title
at this year’s event.

1 Bitte mit Bus und Bahn

Es gibt keine Parkplätze und jede Menge
Straßensperrungen rund um die Wiesn.
Nutzt am besten die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel:
U4/U5 (Theresienwiese, Schwanthalerhöhe),
U3/U6 (Goetheplatz, Poccistraße)
und S-Bahn (Hackerbrücke).

Kinder unter 6 Jahren dürfen auch in
Begleitung Erwachsener nach 20 Uhr nicht
mehr im Bierzelt sein. Kinderwagen sind
auf dem Festgelände von Sonntag bis Freitag
nur bis 18 Uhr erlaubt. An Samstagen
und am „Tag der deutschen Einheit“ sind
sie generell verboten. Buggys sind erlaubt.

in the beer tent after 8 pm even if accompanied
by an adult. Prams are only allowed
on the fairground until 6 pm Sundays to
Fridays. They are generally prohibited
on Saturdays and on the “Day of German
Unity” (3 of October). Strollers are allowed.

Series ausgespielt. Die Krone in der Serie der besten Nationalteams

The Oktoberfest 7s are the very first hit out of the
Olympic Season for the involved teams. But before
this important year in Sevens concludes in August of
2020 in the Japanese capital with the gold medal final,
the World Series is on the line. This series of ten tournaments
around the globe is won by the national team
with the highest aggregate score.

in München
MUNICH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Der MRFC aus Großhadern organisierte einst vor
40 Jahren das allererste Oktoberfest 7s Amateur-Turnier
und steht heute mit Nachwuchsmannschaften
in allen Altersklassen und den
ersten Herren in der 2. Bundesliga als mitgliederstärkster
Klub in Bayern da.
Rugby in München und Umgebung hat
eine sehr lange Tradition. Vor dem Zweiten
Weltkrieg wurde selbst beim FC Bayern
mit dem ovalen Leder gespielt. Über drei
Jahrzehnte ohne Rugby nach dem Krieg
endeten, als der München Rugby Football
Club im Jahr 1977 gegründet wurde.
Seitdem haben sich sechs Klubs im Großraum
um die bayerische Landeshauptstadt
etabliert. Zuletzt erlebte der Sport einen
wahren Boom. Die Münchner Klubs konnten
in wenigen Jahren eine Verdopplung
der Mitgliederzahlen verzeichnen, und mit
den Oktoberfest 7s dürfte dieser Trend weiter
anhalten.

Rugby Renaissance
Rugby in Munich has a long tradition and
before world war two even Germany’s most
famous football club FC Bayern had a Rugby
team. However post war no team was
fielded in the Bavarian capital for almost
three decades, until München Rugby Football
Club was founded in 1977.
Ever since six clubs have been established
in Germany’s southern metropolis. These
clubs recently experienced an absolute
boom, doubling their membership within a
few years. This trend will surely continue
with the Oktoberfest 7s attracting more attention
to the game they play in heaven.
STUDENTENSTADT MÜNCHEN
Die Münchner Studenten haben vor Kurzem ihr
20. Vereins-Jubiläum gefeiert und streiten sich
seit einigen Jahren mit dem MRFC in der 2. Bundesliga
Süd um den Titel als bestes bayerisches
Team.
RC UNTERFÖHRING
Erst vor sieben Jahren gegründet hat der RCU
einen beispiellosen Aufstieg erlebt. Die erste
Herrenmannschaft ist bis in die 2. Bundesliga
aufgestiegen, doch bei den Unterföhringern
ist man besonders auf die Nachwuchsarbeit im
Verein stolz.
MUNICH MONKS
Die Munich Monks sind Münchens einziges ausdrücklich
LGTB-freundliches Rugby-Team. Der
noch relativ junge Klub ist in Giesing daheim
und bildet in der Verbandsliga eine Spielgemeinschaft
mit Fürstenfeldbruck.
TUS FÜRSTENFELDBRUCK
Beim Klub aus dem Münchner Umland wird
schon seit 1985 mit dem ovalen Leder gespielt.
Besonders viel Wert wird auch hier auf den
Nachwuchs gelegt.
RUGBY GRÖBENZELL
Der SC Gröbenzell ist eine weitere Anlaufstelle
für Rugby-Interessierte im Münchner Umland.
Auch die Gröbenzeller spielen in der bayerischen
Verbandsliga Süd.

Die Geschichte
des Rugbysports
Von einem Schuljungen erfunden,
trat Rugby vor fast 200 Jahren
seinen Siegeszug um die Welt an.
Der Legende nach hat Rugby seine Anfänge
im frühen 19. Jahrhundert. An der
renommierten Rugby School in der gleichnamigen
Stadt in Mittelengland soll ein Internatsschüler
namens William Webb Ellis
im Jahr 1823 den Ball während eines Fußballspiels
aufgelesen und ins gegnerische
Tor getragen haben. Danach existierten
jahrzehntelang verschiedene Interpretationen
des Fußballspiels parallel. Erst in der
zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts teilten
sich die Spielarten in Rugby Football und
Association Football (deshalb auch soccer).
Rugby trat seinen Siegeszug zunächst in
den Kronkolonien an und wurde in Südafrika,
Kenia, Neuseeland, Australien und
auf den Pazifik-Inseln populär. In den USA
entwickelte sich aus dem Rugbysport zudem
der American Football. Später wurde
Rugby in zahlreichen weiteren Ländern –
von Frankreich über Argentinien und Japan
bis Georgien – zum Volkssport.
Die schnelle Siebener-Variante wurde
bereits im Jahr 1883 in Schottland erfunden:

Invented by a teenage schoolboy,
Rugby started conquering the
globe almost 200 years ago.
Rugby in its current form has its roots in
the early 19th century. According to the
founding myth, William Webb Ellis picked
up the ball during a school boys match of
football at the renowned Rugby boarding
school in 1823. The Rugby style of football
was born and in the following decades it became
hugely popular in Great Britain. Only
much later in the 19th century Rugby Football
and Association Football (hence soccer)
went separate ways.
Rugby started its global spread in the late
19th century. First of all to the crown dependencies,
where it became very popular
in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia,
the Pacific Islands and the US. Only later
on, American Football developed out of
Rugby. Over the course of the 20th century
rugby was popularised massively in dozens
of other countries from France, Argentina,
Georgia all the way to Japan.
The short form of the game also has its origins
in the 19th century. In 1883 the small
town club Melrose RFC in Scotland was
looking for a way to generate income for its
upcoming season. The local butcher and RFC
member Ned Haig came up with the idea of

mehreren Teilnehmern abhalten zu können.
Trotz aller Widerstände setzte sich
sein Vorschlag durch. Heute wird überall
auf der Welt Siebener gespielt.
Die Sevens World Series mit ihren zehn
internationalen Turnieren u.a. in Hongkong,
Kapstadt und Vancouver zieht Millionen
Fans in ihren Bann. Seit der Wiederaufnahme
ins olympische Programm im
Jahr 2009 erlebt die kurze Form des Rugbys
einen echten Aufschwung. 2016 in Rio
konnte Fidschi sich das erste Rugby-Olympia-Gold
seit 1924 sichern, als Rugby aus
dem Programm gestrichen wurde.

Since Rugby has made its way back into
the Olympic program ten years ago, the
growth of Sevens has only increased. Fiji
overcame tough opposition to bag the gold
medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and
therefore was the first medal winner in
Rugby since 1924, the last time the fifteens
game was featured at the games.
