Describe the most exciting spatial situation that you have ever
designed?
a) the nova project (one of our first projects).
The temporary practice facilities for Arts Centre nOna are housed in a cluster
of 4 industrial spaces in the middle of a block of buildings, in the centre of the
city of Mechelen. Each space has been dealt with individually and given its
own colour, its own mood and its own identity. The practice facilities are merely
functional spaces that comply with the basic technical requirements. They have
been designed as black holes and negative spaces. The positive, architectural
space consequently forms a polychrome labyrinth: a space with form for
informal use as for meditation, relaxation, discussions, exhibitions, etc…
We choose for paint (colour) as 'material’ because of the tight budget of
the client, the temporary character of the project. All ugly imperfect details
disappear by the use of colours. Moreover, colour symbolizes the aim of
different cultures. The project has a surrealistic character!
b) The Blob.
In 2008 we were requested to build an office for a small company
XfactorAgencies. The design dmvA made for the office of XfactorAgencies,
as an extension to the house, was relentlessly rejected by local building
regulations. Used to working with limitations and blurring these boundaries
