FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
THE BÜRKLIN
ELEKTRONIK
ONLINE SHOP
CONVINCES
WITH HIGH
SPEED!
By: CAREN JAEGER
Head of eCommerce
AFTER THE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED MILESTONE IN 2022 -
WWW.BUERKLIN.COM SHINES IN NEW SPLENDOUR - BÜRKLIN
ELEKTRONIK IS PURSUING ITS ROADMAP FOR FURTHER
OPTIMISATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ONLINE SHOP.
The ongoing development of the
online shop will be continued. The
year 2023 is at the top of our agenda,
so that we - dear customers - can
meet your requirements. The well
thought-out and comprehensive
roadmap is based on our strategic
goals and aims, among other things,
to present the „best-in-class“ online
shop.
Thanks to the performance-oriented
infrastructure and shop development,
our online shop impresses
with a very high loading speed! Our
customers can find the products they
are looking for very quickly, receive
all relevant product information
within a few milliseconds, and can
complete their orders quickly and
securely with just a few clicks.
In order to adequately support our
customers in design development
and component production, we are
offering a first new feature: For all
our products, our customers can
see at a glance for which items
schematic symbols, PCB footprints,
and 3D models are available for
download. Our customers and
interested parties can easily drag
these into their own CAD system
and process them there.
Already in the first half of 2023, we
want to comprehensively expand
the customer self-service functions.
The expansion of our eProcurement
offering will also pave our way to
becoming a digital distributor. And
since the use of intelligent search
is a decisive business value and
competitive advantage for us, our
search experts will also be working
on the development of a new search
engine. We are also making great
strides in this area.
As you can see - there is a lot going
on at Bürklin Elektronik - the go-live
of the new online shop was just the
beginning of our transformation
to a European/international digital
distributor. To keep up to date with
POSSIBILITIES FOR REDUCING ENERGY DEMAND
ENERGY
MANAGEMENT
How can technical components
support energy
saving? And: Which
products are convincing
in this respect? The most
important information at
a glance.
Efficient energy management
systems are increasingly
in demand both in
companies and in industry.
No wonder - after all,
companies are coming
under increasing financial
pressure due to rising
electricity and heating
costs. However, current
projections show that there
is considerable potential
for savings in this area.
In industry, for example,
energy requirements could
be reduced by up to 25
percent with the help of
adapted measures. For
companies, experts are
talking about up to 30 per
cent.
Reducing energy consumption
and thus saving
costs - that is the goal.
But what measures do
consumers need to take in
order to achieve mediumand
long-term success?
We present ways in which
companies can basically
determine and control
their needs, as well as
technical components that
support savings measures.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT
SYSTEMS: QUESTIONING
THE STATUS QUO
In order to sustainably
reduce energy demand,
the first step is to collect
reliable data. This
shows how much energy
is actually generated (e.g.
by photovoltaics or wind
turbines) and consumed,
and in which areas there is
potential for savings.
With the help of a standard-compliant
energy
management system in
accordance with ISO 50001,
comprehensive energy
data collection is possible.
At the same time, the key
figures required for control
and certification can be determined
and the development
of energy consumption
can be assessed. The
visualisation of electricity
flows, consumption and
development over a
defined period of time provides
a clear overview of
the status quo and current
developments. The success
of individual measures
to reduce consumption
can be easily assigned and
read in this way. Between
10 and 25 per cent of the
energy consumption can
be saved with the help of
efficient energy management
in medium-sized and
large companies - clearly
an important tool in the
demand reduction.
LOAD MANAGEMENT:
CONTROLLING ENERGY
FLOWS
In addition to intelligent
monitoring, flexible and
automatable control is
also necessary to reduce
energy demand. With intelligent
load management,
PV systems, charging
stations, battery storage
as well as heating and air
conditioning systems can
be networked and controlled
efficiently and
cost-optimised. Power
peaks can thus be
reduced, increasing
energy efficency.
TOPIC OF THE FUTURE:
RENEWABLE ENERGY
Especially in the fields of
photovoltaics and e-mobility,
energy meters,
and energy management
systems are of particular
importance. Photovoltaic
systems, charging stations,
as well as wind and
hydroelectric power plants
can be optimally monitored
and controlled by means of
efficient energy management
and on the basis of
load systems. In the future,
this approach will play an
increasingly important
role in both businesses
and companies in order
to reduce electricity and
heating costs. There is
sufficient development
potential in this field. The
share of renewable energies
for heat generation in
industry is currently at a
manageable five percent.
In the trade, commerce,
and services sector, the
figure is around ten
percent.
ENERGY HARVESTING:
“HARVESTING“
ELECTRICITY
The use of components
with energy harvesting
technology is already
showing short- and medium-term
success. With the
help of special technology,
small amounts of electrical
energy can be obtained
from external sources,
such as ambient light,
temperature gradients,
vibrations, or electromagnetic
radiation. This energy
is continuously “harvested“
at a low level. With the
help of ultra-low-power
technologies, it is thus
possible to operate various
devices autonomously.
For example, the stored
energy is used to supply
wireless, electronic devices
with low power consumption,
such as microprocessors
or devices in network
communication. And the
principle of energy harvesting
is also used in components
such as wireless
switches and sensors,
reducing not only energy
consumption but also the
associated costs.
accurate current measurement
along with overvoltage/overcurrent
circuit protection are necessary
elements in a power supply design.
Not only are these component
solutions needed to help enhance
reliability, but they are also required
for regulatory compliance
to help increase safety and reduce
downtime in these applications.
To assist designers, Bourns offers
advanced magnetics, resistive
devices, and protection solutions
that are typically required throughout
a switch mode power supply
(SMPS) that is used in many energy
applications.
IGBTs
Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors
(IGBTs) are particularly well-suited
to implement Uninterruptable Power
Supplies (UPS) that provide power
to AC line-connected equipment if
the AC mains voltage experiences a
failure. Between the time a power
failure occurs and the back-up diesel
generator kicks in, the UPS supplies
the AC current for a few minutes.
Instead of using MOSFETs, IGBTs
allow the designer to specify a simplified
and smaller heatsink because
IGBTs have lower power loss and
higher thermal conductivity. For this
reason, Bourns ® IGBTs are optimal
solutions for UPS functional blocks
in data server installations, network
and communication hub facilities,
and for powering industrial manufacturing
plant robotic operations
and their communication networks.
IGBTs are also beneficial in static
UPS systems that are used in data
centers to monitor the operations’
supply power and maintain battery
back-up autonomy for power continuity.
IGBTs are advantageous
because they are smaller, have a
lighter weight, and offer higher
efficiency in static UPS systems.
They also help achieve lower bill of
material (BOM) costs, which typically
results in fewer components to fail,
higher backup operational reliability,
and a higher Mean Time Between
Failure (MTBF).
IsoMOV PROTECTORS
The groundbreaking lineup of
Bourns ® IsoMOV hybrid protection
components combines the best
breakthrough surge performance of
its patented EdgMOV technology
with an integrated Gas Discharge
Tube (GDT) isolation structure. This
enables IsoMOV protectors to
provide high reliability and long life
protection, including in certain harsh
environments. The IsoMOV Series
is an upgrade to nearly any MOV in
power applications where premium
performance and/or space savings
are valued. The extended temperature
range, low leakage, and superb
energy handling density are especially
advantageous to industrial
surges. Plus, their unique and
graceful end-of-life failure mode
quickly and cleanly blows the
line fuse, never leaving equipment
unprotected and eliminating
the need for any indicator
circuitry. The IsoMOV
protector family includes three
unique series of devices; Model
IsoM3, IsoM5, and IsoM8. With
nominal surge ratings of 3 kA, 5 kA,
and 8 kA, these revolutionary protectors
offer performance usually found
in larger MOV devices.
JANITZA
EXPERTS IN ENERGY
MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY
In Lahnau (Hesse), between Wetzlar and Giessen, the traditional family-owned
company Janitza develops and manufactures hardware and software products
that are always one step ahead of their time. Janitza offers its customers complete
solutions in the field of energy measurement technology. The range includes
energy measurement devices, current transformers, and communication
equipment as well as complete energy management systems. Regardless
of the industry, the requirements for energy efficiency, sustainability, high
availability, and safety are increasing. To meet all these requirements necessitates
maintaining a holistic perspective on energy. Janitza goes far beyond
pure energy measurement and combines the aspects of energy management,
power quality, and residual current monitoring into a holistic measurement
solution in a single system environment.
Power monitoring increases the
transparency of power consumption
and energy costs at all measurement
levels. Critical deviations in power
quality and residual currents (RCM),
which load or even put systems at
risk, can also be detected using
fine-granular measurements. A
major challenge today is consolidating
data from all areas of a company.
Standards and interfaces from the
machine level to ERP systems and
building management systems must
be coordinated with each other. The
UMG 801 features the appropriate
communication interfaces as well
as an option for direct data transmission
via OPC UA. As a result, users
benefit both from secure and futureoriented
data transmission and from
simple, cost-effective integration into
higher-level systems.
The UMG 801 basic unit features
8 current measurement channels
with 1/5 A inputs and 4 multifunction
channels, which are optionally
configurable as RCM, temperature
measurement channels, or additional
current measurement channels.
Not only can power measurement
data of several measurement groups
be recorded with high measurement
accuracy (V: 0.2 % / A: 0.2 % / kWh:
class 0.2), but extensive voltage
parameters can also be measured.
The integrated measurement data
memory with 4 GB offers the necessary
capacity. The device features 2
Ethernet interfaces that can be used
simultaneously, as well as an RS485
interface. Comprehensive protocols
and services (e.g. OPC UA, Modbus)
are available. In combination with the
GridVis ® software, it offers extensive
options for the visualizing, analyzing,
and documenting power measurement
data. The device is equipped
with a high-quality color graphic
display with intuitive menu navigation
for easy operation and displaying
measured values on site.
MODULAR DESIGN
The 800-CT8-A current measurement
modules allow the basic unit
to be extended to up to 92 current
measurement channels. Up to 10
modules can be integrated via a
click system, without external
cabling between the basic unit and
the current measurement modules.
An integrated bus system supplies
power and transmits data. In addition,
remote measurement points
can be connected with the 800-CON
transfer module. In this case, the
cable length can be up to 100 m.
Easy integration into higher-level
systems and expansion with compact
modules make the new UMG
801 a future-proof and an attractive,
cost-effective all-in-one solution for
power monitoring in buildings and
data centers, as well as in industry
and in power supply.
A key factor for success for modern
companies is transparency across
all data levels. The acquisition and
consolidation of data from all areas
of the company is necessary for purposes
such as optimizing planning
for production processes, establishing
safety measures to protect
systems and machinery, and to
save costs.
With its modular expansion capability,
the UMG 801 is optimally suited
to cover the complete range of needs
in an energy management system
(according to ISO 50001). The compact
Janitza UMG 801 power meter
can be extended in modules to up to
92 current measurement channels
and offers various communication
interfaces for direct connection to
higher-level systems.
TDK
POWERFUL
COMPONENTS
FOR RENEWABLE
ENERGIES
The share of renewable energies
is still increasing very rapidly. The
reasons for this are obvious: on
the one hand, it is about reducing
CO2 emissions, on the other hand,
it is about conserving valuable resources.
Photovoltaics and wind
energy are the two most important
pillars of renewable energies.
The further expansion of photovoltaics
is a central core element of
the energy transition. In addition, the
need to balance supply and demand
will result in increasing demand for
storage systems (ESS), both in the
domestic sector and on an industrial
scale. These systems require inverters
to convert the direct current generated
by the photovoltaic system
into alternating current so that the
energy can be fed into the grid or
into one’s own household. Inverters
require passive components with the
highest reliability and resilience with
long operating times.
DC link capacitors are key components
for photovoltaic inverters.
For this purpose, in addition to
the proven aluminum electrolytic
capacitors with snap-in terminals,
TDK now offers the ModCap HF,
a modular capacitor concept for
DC link applications that is able
to work at very high switching
frequencies.
The six newly developed power
capacitors of the B25647A series
are available for rated voltages
from 900 V to 1600 V and cover a
capacitance spectrum from 640 µF
to 1850 µF. Depending on the type,
the rated currents range from 160 A
to 210 A with a maximum permitted
hot spot temperature of 90 °C.
Thanks to the ultra-low ESL value
of only 8 nH and to its flat ESR vs
Freq evolution, that allows minimizing
losses even at high frequency,
ModCap HF is particularly well
suited for fast-switching SiC-based
inverters. The very low self-inductance
prevents voltage overshooting
on the power semiconductors when
the current is shut off. As a result,
generally, no snubber capacitors
are needed.
With the global commitment to reduce
CO2 emissions, e-mobility is increasingly
gaining momentum. Only
with a dense charging infrastructure
can the accustomed level of mobility
be guaranteed. DC fast-charging
technology is an important element,
providing drivers with enough energy
for long distances in a short charging
time, especially on long journeys. In
the future, DC charging technology
will also be available for private
charging, on the one hand, to use
the driver‘s own solar power, and
on the other hand, to use the car as
a storage medium. The efficiency of
the charging station is an important
performance feature. TDK offers
WAGO
THE EASY WAY TO ACHIEVE
MID-COMPLIANT ENERGY
MEASUREMENT
“KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” – THIS MAXIM APPLIES MORE THAN EVER WHERE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
IS CONCERNED. RISING COSTS AND POTENTIAL CO2 SAVINGS ARE MAKING THE PROSPECT OF
GREATER ENERGY EFFICIENCY MORE AND MORE ATTRACTIVE – BUT TO OPTIMIZE YOUR CONSUMP-
TION, YOU NEED PRECISE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT IT, WHICH REQUIRES COMPREHENSIVE ENERGY
MEASUREMENT.
IT ALL BEGINS
WITH MEASUREMENT.
WAGO’s 4-quadrant energy meters
(MID) make energy measurement
particularly easy and accurate, and
are also certified for billing-related
energy measurement throughout
Europe thanks to compliance with
the MID Directive 2014/32/EU. These
energy meters boast numerous
features that make it even easier
for users to quickly and reliably
determine their energy input and
consumption. In addition to the
values for active and reactive energy,
all the meters also record the mains
frequency, as well as current, voltage,
and power for all phases. This
means the three-phase energy
meters can also be used for three
single-phase applications.
STEP 1:
FINDING THE RIGHT DEVICE
Three versions of the energy meters
are available. The direct meters with
a width of 4 HP (72 mm) are available
in two connection variants. The
universal connection variants (4PU)
have input and output terminals on
the bottom of the device; in contrast,
the devices marked 4PS have their
input terminal on the bottom and
the output terminals on the top. This
allows the devices fit perfectly into
existing systems too, and the selection
can be based on the cable
routing. The type 2CT transformer
meters are only 2 HP (35 mm) wide,
so they save space on the DIN-rail
right from the control cabinet
planning stage.
Need more? If the energy consumption
meters are insufficient for direct
connection with currents up to 65 A
on a typical three-phase power
network, flexible transformer meters
can be used. Depending on the
transformer ratio, these can also be
used for very high currents.
STEP 2:
FAST, SAFE INSTALLATION –
WITH PROVEN CONNECTION
TECHNOLOGY FROM WAGO
The lever connection technology with
push-in technology allows fast toolfree
device connection. Solid conductors
and conductors with ferrules can
be plugged in directly; fine-stranded
conductors are connected without
tools by opening the lever. Another
advantage of CAGE CLAMP ® connection
technology is safe operation at
runtime. While screw connections
can loosen over time, this technology
ensures a permanent contact,
which keeps the contact points from
overheating, for example. This can be
particularly relevant in a high-vibration
machine environment.
There are several ways to read out
the values during operation: via the
display, the app, or connected energy
meters’ large illuminated displays
show users all important values at
a glance; touch-sensitive operating
elements allow them to operate the
device directly on site as well. The
WAGO Energy Meter Configurator
app also displays the current values,
which can also be saved in the app as
a CSV report and sent via standard
messenger services or email. All
energy meters also have three integrated
communication interfaces:
Comprehensive energy measurement
is important in many areas:
Whether you’re measuring energy for
EV charging, determining the energy
consumption of individual production
cells, or billing the bakery in a shopping
(sealed & extended temperature)
is also sealed and can be used on
printed circuit boards that are made
robust against environmental influences
or contamination by potting,
dip coating, or conformal coating.
Thanks to its extreme temperature
resistance from -40 °C to +125 °C,
the RACON ST is ideal for automotive
applications or similar outdoor
applications. A tight, robust, and
gold-based contact system makes
it additionally resistant and switchsafe.
The result: operation is absolutely
reliable for at least one million
operating cycles.
MEDIAROBUST ELECTRONIC
In order to become robust against
environmental influences such as
condensation or contamination,
there are various ways to protect the
printed circuit board. In this context,
our customers and also we at RAFI
often rely on potting, dip coating, or
conformal coating of entire circuit
board assemblies. There were always
challenges with the previous tactile
switches, because they were not
designed for the application of such
circuit board protection methods. We
have optimized this and offer a new
generation of MICONs and RACONs
that are equipped for such applications.
In conformal coating, a distinction
is made between dip coating and
selective coating with a spray head.
With selective coating, only critical
components and contacts can be
painted, thus saving costs by using
less material. Painting protects
against condensation or contamination
and also provides ESD protection.
In the case of MICON and
RACON, the flexible pressure piece
should be left out during coating, as
otherwise paint particles can flake
off when the button is subsequently
actuated.
POTTING
In potting, the printed circuit board
is partially or completely filled with a
medium and offers not only excellent
protection in constant humidity but
also mechanical protection in case of
vibration and improved heat dissipation.
This can significantly extend the
lifetime of the electronics. The new
generation MICONs and RACONs
(sealed) can now be completely
enclosed up to the defined potting
height without hesitation and continue
to function reliably thereafter.
Dip coating is usually applied in an
immersion process in which the
assembled circuit board is immersed
in a basin. The coating material has
the task of penetrating into every
corner of the assembly in order to
provide the best possible protection
for the circuit board. A thin layer
of just 400 nm is sufficient here to
reliably protect the electronics from
malfunctions and moisture. For the
tactile switches, on the other hand,
it is a great challenge to resist this
coating – but MICON as well as
RACON are ideally suited for exactly
this purpose.
AVAILABILITY
Both the new MICON 5 S/SL/SAFETY
and the RACON 8/12 ST tactile
switches will be available in series
in the second quarter of 2023. If you
would like to receive samples of the
different variants in advance, you can
already submit sample requests now.
Easy operation, instantaneous HERE! measurement
of solar radiation, and an integrated temperature sensor
meet the requirements of the IEC 62446-1 standard for
testing, documenting, and maintaining photovoltaic systems.
In addition, the integrated compass and tilt sensor
enable quick measurement and documentation of the
alignment of the roof or mounting site as well as the
slope and module inclination during the measurement,
installation, or adjustment of a system. Whether working
on a roof system or a large installation, the handy IRR1-
SOL measuring device should be in the tool bag of every
solar installer and technician.
USE THE IRR1-SOL FOR:
Planning and measuring photovoltaic systems
The solar irradiation is determined taking into account
the shading in order to determine the expected energy
production at the respective installation site. It is measured
in full sun hours, the number of hours per day in
which 1,000 watts are generated per square metre of
the photovoltaic system. Location, time of day, season,
and weather conditions affect the full sun hours. Use the
Fluke IRR1-SOL to determine the actual solar irradiance
(W/m²) and shading at the mounting location to establish
reference values.
Measurements
After installing the system, make sure it is working as
intended by measuring the electrical characteristics and
the actual output power of the modules. The output of
a photovoltaic system is calculated from on its current/
voltage curve (I-V curve). Use the IRR1-SOL irradiance
meter to determine the solar irradiance required to
calculate the I-V curve of the output power.
Comparison and diagnosis
Even when installed correctly, a photovoltaic system
may not produce the expected electrical output. To get
the expected output power, the system must receive the
right amount of energy from irradiation to generate the
DC voltage to feed into the inverters.
The meter has slim pliers that allow you to access cables
in tight junction boxes. The test leads are designed
for work up to 1,500 V DC and are specified according to
CAT III 1,500 V.
For AC measurements, the supplied iFlex flexible current
sensor gives you excellent access to cables in confined
spaces. It can be routed through extremely small
spaces and delivers precise measurement results.
