Welcome to our second issue 2023 of the Quarterly Magazine.
A control cabinet is indispensable for industrial applications. It is therefore particularly important that it is well
planned and safely installed. Door systems, interior design, air conditioning and protective measures must be
thought through down to the last detail. Only in this way can efficient operation be ensured and damage or danger
to persons and property be avoided. In this issue, we provide information about safety, digitalisation and efficiency
in control cabinet construction and give an overview of the most important market trends and present innovative
solutions and products for this.
The topic of eProcurement is becoming increasingly interesting. Not only for larger companies, but also for small
and medium-sized businesses. Bürklin eProcurement relies on automation and thus on the reduction of manual
effort, which is reflected in the process costs caused by each order. Finding and correcting errors, that can always
occur by manual processing, are also a cost driver. Robert Mattheus, Head of eSales and eProcurement at Bürklin
Elektronik describes how you can save up to 56% in process costs with Bürklin eProcurement.
Last but not least, we report how our online shop is becoming increasingly intelligent thanks to an improved
PIM system in order to ensure that you receive the best possible quality of information (item description, technical
characteristics, images and documents) for every item offered.
9 OUT OF 10 COMPANIES STILL LEAVE
THEIR COST-SAVING POTENTIAL UNTAPPED:
WITH BÜRKLIN ePROCUREMENT
YOU CAN SAVE UP TO 56 %
ON PROCESS COSTS!
„ePROCUREMENT - THAT‘S ONLY FOR LARGER COMPANIES“ - THAT‘S WHAT MANY DECISION-MAKERS,
DEALING FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH THIS TOPIC, THINK. ROBERT MATTHEUS, HEAD OF eSALES AND
ePROCUREMENT AT BÜRKLIN ELEKTRONIK EXPLAINS IN THIS INTERVIEW THE REASON THIS STATEMENT
IS INCORRECT, AND THE WAY BÜRKLIN ePROCUREMENT CAN HELP EVEN SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED
COMPANIES SAVE MONEY ON EVERY ORDER.
This is Thomas.
Thomas is a supply manager.
He is totally relaxed.
Mr Mattheus, saving up to 56 % of
the process costs on orders especially
in these times with high prices
for electronic components, sounds
too good to be true. What is it about?
Robert Mattheus: When talking
about savings potential through
eProcurement, what we really mean
is saving the process costs, that
every order generates, no matter
how small or large it is.
Processing costs in orders occur due
to the time spent selecting a supplier
and articles to be ordered, coordinating
with internal departments on
the order, entering and shipping the
order, checking the subsequent order
confirmation, etc. In other words,
they arise from all the things that
people do manually.
And how much do these
process costs account for?
RM: That‘s exactly what we were
looking for! Hence, we recently asked
some of our customers who already
use our eProcurement. The result
was that for a single order without
eProcurement, an average of €60 is
incurred as processing costs. This
may not seem like much for a onetime
order worth for example €6,000.
But the €60 is also incurred for an
order of €100 or €50. Moreover, they
are incurred for each order. So, the
more often you order, the more it
adds on.
And your eProcurement solution
can help reduce process costs?
RM: Yes, because Bürklin
eProcurement focuses on reducing
manual effort through automation.
This is reflected in the process
costs that each order generates.
How much exactly can companies
save with Bürklin eProcurement?
RM: This depends on two factors.
Firstly, the internal operational
processes - i.e., how much manual
effort is involved in each order on
the customer‘s side. Secondly which
variant of Bürklin eProcurement
does our customer decide to invest
in. We offer two different options:
Bürklin eProcurement BASIC and
Bürklin eProcurement PLUS.
Our survey amongst our customers,
who already use Bürklin
eProcurement showed that even with
the BASIC variant, savings of up to
20 % are possible. With the PLUS
variant, savings are increased by up
to 56 %. FOR FURTHER
INFORMATION:
HERE!
How exactly does Bürklin
eProcurement BASIC help
in saving process costs?
RM: With the BASIC variant, the
savings potential lies above all with
an increase in efficiency through the
transfer of product data from Bürklin
and thus a reduction in process costs
in areas like data maintenance and
data quality. This also includes the
avoidance of errors.
To make this possible, we provide our
eProcurement BASIC customers with
data for all products in our range via
OCI, cXML punchout, API, BMEcat or
as a stock report.
the PLUS variant also includes the
Comparison
of several
suppliers
possible?
But the implementation of your
eProcurement solution costs time
and thus, ultimately money. Does
it pay off at all - even for smaller
companies?
RM: Most of our customers are
always surprised at how little effort
the implementation causes. For
eProcurement BASIC takes only
15- 30 minutes! This means 15-30
minutes of effort to permanently save
time and money with every order.
So Bürklin eProcurement pays off
not only for corporations and other
large companies?
RM: Correct. But the idea, that
eProcurement is only a solution for
larger companies is still in many
people‘s minds. We assume that
currently only about 10% of the
customers who benefit from our
eProcurement in fact, use it. So,
there is still a lot of space for improvement.
eProcurement is worthwhile for companies
of all sizes, as long as they
have to order several times a week
and these orders require a great deal
of manual effort. It is precisely these
two factors that lead to high process
costs, which can be reduced via our
eProcurement solution. The size of
the company does not play a role.
Speaking of prerequisites ...What
does it take on the customer side to
be able to use your eProcurement
solution?
RM: For Bürklin eProcurement PLUS
the customer usually needs an ERP
system.With Bürklin eProcurement
BASIC it makes no difference what
technical specifications exist on the
customer‘s side. Because with the
BASIC variant, we are very broadly
positioned in terms of how we can
supply product data. In most cases,
our customers can choose between
several alternatives due to several
possible routes. The route that is
taken depends on which factors are
important to the customer.
Which factors influence the
customer‘s decision when choosing
the optimal eProcurement solution?
RM: If it is important to a company,
for example, that employees can
place orders directly through its own
ERP system, then the API or the
stock report should be the preferred
method of transferring product data.
However, with these two ways API
only provides live data, while the
data of the stock report always
corresponds to the time of its creation.
To keep the stock report as up
to date as possible, a daily update,
for example, is possible.
Alternatively, there is also the possibility
to provide live data via OCI from
our online shop directly into the ERP
system. All the functions offered by
our shop are also available in this
case. This saves the time-consuming
transfer of the order confirmation
into the ERP system - which is
necessary when ordering directly in
the shop.
What about companies that
already use a procurement
platform? Can they also use
Bürklin eProcurement?
RM: Yes, that is possible. Our
eProcurement solution is compatible
with multiple procurement platforms
like mercateo, SAP Ariba, Simple
System, meplato amongst many
many others. This means, as a customer,
you continue to buy as usual
via your procurement platform and
still benefit from the advantages of
our eProcurement solution. Depending
on the customer’s need, the product
data is usually made available
via BMEcat, cXMLPunchout or OCI.
And how does the whole thing
work? What is the first step if I
as a customer, am interested in
Bürklin eProcurement?
RM: The simplest method is to
have a consultancy session when
all technical needs and specific
customer wants can be covered.
We then advise not only the optimal
eProcurement solution for the respective
company but also give
tips so that a smooth implementation
can take place.
This consultation is free of charge
and non-binding. With the current
economic situation when one has
to save as much money as possible,
Bürklin eProcurement is one of the
simplest and fastest ways to save
significant process costs. Therefore,
get in touch with us since, as
a customer, you don‘t have nothing
to lose, rather the oppsite.
Experts use the term mental load
to describe the cognitive work involved
in the organisation of everyday
tasks. Taken separately, each
task or decision is not necessarily
worth to be discussed, but added
up, they can create a higher load.
Drivers are not the only ones affected
by mental load. Content managers
at Bürklin processing article
data every day are also affected.
Before they are published, data of
an article offered in the online shop
need to be collected and checked.
The quality of the article data is
increased so that articles can be
presented in the Bürklin online
shop as attractively for sale as
possible.
To prevent managing data from
leading to mental overload of
the content managers, Bürklin
Elektronik uses the product information
management system (PIM
system) Contene. In the background,
the system monitors the consistency,
completeness, and accuracy of article
data using a series of automatic
actions. In the process, it relieves
content managers from the necessity
of making small decisions,
points to possible discrepancies in
the data, and thus leads to a continuous
improvement of the quality of
article data in the online shop.
When a content manager modifies
article data, Contene automatically
triggers a cascade of actions and
decisions.
The following example serves to
explain the integrated automatic
actions:
Let us assume that there is a
“laboratory plug,” about which an
article description, technical properties,
images, and documents are
already stored in Contene. Now,
the content manager adds a small
detail to the article data. Let us
look at what happens next.
Product and supplier managers
decide which articles from which
manufacturers will be offered for
sale in the online shop.
The Content managers enrich the
article data sets in the PIM system,
adding relevant information (descriptions,
technical data, images,
data sheets), so that consistent
article information is displayed
in the Bürklin online shop for the
purchasing decision of the articles.
To start with, in the technical properties
of the article data set of the
plug, the attribute “Color_DE” (which
stores the German value of the color
of the article) is given the value
“grün” (German for “green”) in
Contene. Once the content manager
has started to type the first few
letters, a list of possible colors is
shown.
The content manager chooses
the suggestion “grün” and saves
the data set.
All the following steps, [2] through
[9], run automatically without
interaction from the content
manager.
The translation function integrated
in Contene searches for “grün” in a
dictionary of approximately 18.000
terms, finds the English translation
“green,” and enters this term into the
English counterpart “Color_EN” to
the German attribute “Color_DE.”
When creating translations in the
Contene dictionary module, content
managers define, as needed, conditions
for using alternative translations.
A “Stecker” could be translated
into “plug,” but in the context of
“crimp connectors” would automatically
be translated into “pin.” These
context-related characteristics are
automatically taken into account by
the automatic translation module.
In terms that contain numerals, such
as “1-polig” or “AWG 14,” the part of
the term serving as a placeholder for
the numeral is specially marked. For
instance, the entry “{0}-polig“ can be
translated as “1 pole”, but also as
“3 pole,” making the redundant definition
of every single combination of
numerals unnecessary.
Adjustments to foreign language
terms are made centrally in the dictionary.
With a single mouse click,
they are applied to all instances in
the foreign language article data.
The automatic translation function
leads to uniformity in the style of the
German and English article information.
Because the automatic function
takes context into account, the work
of the content managers is simplified.
Customers of Bürklin Elektronik
benefit from homogenous article
descriptors in the online shop and
are able to navigate more easily to
the desired article in Bürklin’s wide
assortment of products.
Background calculations create article descriptors
Contene contains rules for automatically creating article descriptors.
For nearly 150 different categories of articles, Bürklin defined which
technical attributes are used to automatically create article descriptors.
All articles in an article category thus receive unique and meaningful
article descriptors, which in turn enables customers in the online shop
to clearly compare articles displayed in the search results list (SERP).
The rules stored ensure that the sequence of information within the
article descriptors is uniform and consistent. If adjustments to the
structure of the article descriptors are necessary, the rules are changed
and all affected article descriptors are automatically corrected.
[3] ARTICLE DESCRIPTORS ARE
AUTOMATICALLY CREATED
An article descriptor uniquely identifies
an article in the online shop.
It aims to deliver customers all
important information at a glance,
serving as a basis for or against a
purchasing decision.
Article descriptors are automatically
generated in Contene based on defined
rules (see box). When a content
manager assigns the color “grün”
to a “Laborstecker” in step [1], this
information about color is automatically
programmatically added to the
article descriptor according to the
rules set up in Contene.
At the same time, due to the translation
added in step [2], “green” is
now added to the English language
article descriptor.
Because of these automatic additions,
the content managers are
relieved of having to think of possible
effects on article descriptors when
they alter article data.
In addition, the rules, defined individually
for each category of articles,
ensure that article descriptors are
generated according to uniform
schemes. Since article descriptors in
an article category are similarly constructed,
customers can more easily
distinguish similar articles from one
another in the Bürklin online shop.
If a content manager wants to alter
the article descriptor scheme of an
article category, the content manager
merely changes the rules (not the
article descriptors themselves). As
soon as the content manager has
applied the new rules to all article
records of the article category using
a batch process, all article descriptors
conform to the new scheme.
[4] THE DATA QUALITY LEVEL
IS CALCULATED
Since the content manager added
the technical property “Color_DE”
equals “grün” in step [1] and next
the translation “green” was automatically
determined in step [2], the
filling level of the technical properties
increases as a result. (The filling
level is the percentage ratio of the
filled attributes to the available
attributes.) Through the increase in
the filling level, the article record
receives more data quality points in
our example. This allows the article
to be published in the online shop in
the future. The automatic approval of
the article for publishing is displayed
to the content managers by a check
in the attribute “Transfer to the web
shop calculated.”
This automation removes the manual
decision of the content managers
as to whether an article is
to be published in the online shop.
At the same time, the automatic
decision for or against publication
of an article guarantees that the
descriptions of the offered articles
meet uniform quality requirements.
Granular control of the quality
classification of article data is made
possible by means of custom defined
calculation rules, which weigh differently
important and less important
attributes.
In the PIM system Contene, the business
logic of the calculation rules
and the application logic are strictly
separated. The content management
department can change the rules
using low-code syntax similar to that
in Microsoft Excel without having to
update the PIM system.
The changes in step [3] and step [4]
have the effect of newly calculating
Contene always provides the content
As a result, numbers are also updated
on the various tiles of the
“Number of items for web shop“.
Since January 2023, product declarations
of conformity with REACH
and RoHS (EU-wide requirements
for declaring hazardous materials)
have been available as PDF
documents in the Bürklin online
shop. When information contained
in the declarations of conformity
is changed, such as manufacturer
number, article descriptor, REACH
conformity, and RoHS conformity,
Contene independently generates
new product conformity declarations
two attributes that are contained
in the declaration of conformity
(see box). Contene recognizes this
data modification, triggering two
new declarations of conformity as
a result. In less than one second, a
new German and English PDF file
are created and stored in the MAM
system) of Contene in the data record
of the “laboratory plug.” The previous
declarations of conformity are archived
and can be accessed at any
time.
Customers may download current
declarations of conformity for all
products offered in the online shop
at any time. Because Contene
monitors modifications to data, the
declarations are kept current at all
times leaving content managers with
no concern of updating declarations.
[7] ALL MODIFICATIONS ARE
LOGGED IN THE CHANGE LOG
All modifications of data in steps [1]
to [6] are recorded in a change log
containing old and new content,
date and time of the change, and the
name of the content manager who
prompted the change. Queries in
the central filter module of Contene
allow the content managers to
search for article data which has
been modified. The complete traceability
of all modifications of data,
along with the archiving of old declarations
of conformity from step [6]
is an important building block of the
data governance strategy of Bürklin
Elektronik.
The business logic of the PIM system
Contene contains a calculation
matrix. This matrix is used to
assess whether article data are
permitted to be published online
or not; see step [4]. A points system
is used to evaluate components
of an article record, such as
“Article image available?”, “Article
document available?”, or “Article
descriptor available?”, from which
a data quality level is calculated.
Only when a minimum number
of points has been reached for a
given article may the article data
be published in the online shop.
[8] ARTICLE DATA ARE
EXPORTED TO THE ONLINE SHOP
Several times a day, Contene automatically
transfers to the online
shop all article data, product images,
documents, and declarations of
conformity of the article records that
have been modified since the last
transfer. In our example article, the
various modifications from steps [1],
[2], [3], and [6] are transferred to the
online shop for the first time, since
in step [4] a data quality level was
reached which permits the article
data to be published in the online
shop.
Contene automatically chooses the
data records to be transferred. The
content managers can manually activate
an export run when modified
data must be immediately transferred
to the online shop.
[9] ARTICLE DESCRIPTORS ARE
EXPORTED TO THE ERP SYSTEM
At regular intervals, Contene makes
available all article descriptors for
importing into the ERP system. The
article descriptors automatically
generated in step [3] will from now
on also be printed on delivery notes
and invoices referencing the given
article. This simplifies procurement
management for customers who
have purchased the article, as
meaningful article descriptors are
used in the accompanying documents.
[1] Manually
alter data
Manually
Automatically
[2] Automatically
translate attribute
into English
It would be an enormous challenge
for the content managers at Bürklin
to think of all the effects that can be
triggered by simply entering the word
“grün” into the PIM system. With over
1 million manual and automatic modifications
to article data records in
the entire PIM system every month,
it would be impossible. Depending
on the scope of the modifications,
Contene processes up to 100 article
records per second, evaluating several
thousand rules per record and
making the resulting decisions.
The business logic in Contene monitors
all modifications to data, generates
metadata, and creates dynamic
content in order to keep all attributes
of a data record current, consistent,
and congruent at all times. At the
same time, the business logic reduces
the mental load of the content
managers. All data users in the data
value chain — from content managers
and buyers in the online shop to the
technician using the component —
benefit from current and error-free
article data.
It ensures the smooth
running of processes
in plants, facilities and
machines: the control
cabinet.
What to consider when it
comes to control cabinet
technology? We have
summarised the most
important information.
NORMS AND
STANDARDS
Control cabinet technology
is subject to specific national
and international
standards. In Germany,
DIN EN 61439-1 to -6 and
VDE 0660-500 are the relevant
standards for switchgear
and control cabinets.
They regulate the requirements
for switchgear
and control cabinets with
regard to design, testing,
assembly and operation.
It is important that these
norms and standards are
taken into account during
the planning, construction
and installation of a
switchgear cabinet to
ensure safe and reliable
operation.
HOUSING: ROBUST &
LIGHTWEIGHT
For indoor and outdoor
use: High-quality enclosures
should be made of
robust and lightweight
materials. In this context,
innovative manufacturers
rely on impact-resistant
polyester, for example,
and thus guarantee easy
installation, while the
models also have a long
service life. Other particularly
practical features
are the large, wide-angled
door opening, high fire
resistance and double
insulation to prevent electrical
contact.
THE INNER WORKINGS OF
A CONTROL CABINET
The inner workings of a
control cabinet are at once
highly complex and yet
well structured. It consists
of the distribution panel,
the DIN rails, heating and
cooling units, HMI interfaces
for operation and
communication, the access
protection, the inlets and
outlets of the cabling,
network switches, routers
and redundant units.
Also, frequency converters,
load switches, relays,
overvoltage protection,
programmable logic controllers
(PLCs), power supply units,
emergency stop switches,
outdoor displays for
current, voltage, power or
frequency and I/O modules
for signal processing.
In this area, it is essential
that the mounting plates
in the control cabinet are
stable and robust and have
a sufficient load-bearing
capacity to accommodate
the electrical components.
The cabling should also be
clearly and systematically
laid out to enable rapid
troubleshooting in the
event of error messages.
Wire clamps and special
mounting blocks keep the
countless cables in the
control cabinet in check.
Always be cautious about
one thing: Sharp edges can
damage cables and wires.
That is why it is advisable
both to the quality of the
products for cables and
conductors, and to the use
of high-quality models in
the case of retaining clips
or mounting blocks with
wiring channels and the
like. Top manufacturers
such as the partner companies
of Bürklin Elektronik
already take care during
production to round off
edges and corners so that
cables and wires remain
undamaged.
MATCHED PRODUCTS
ARE LESS PRONE
TO ERROR
Switching devices such as
circuit breakers, contactors
or relays must meet the requirements
of the application
and should be matched
to each other in terms of
capacity. This also applies
to various connectors and
cabling. The reason: if the
models are matched to
each other, the susceptibility
to errors is lower and
the components usually
also work more energyefficiently.
SPACE REQUIREMENTS
AND INSTALLATION
When planning and installing
a control cabinet,
the space requirements
must be taken into account.
The control cabinet must
provide sufficient space for
the electrical components
and also sufficient space
for access to the cabling
and the switchgear. Note
also: The control cabinet
should be installed in an
easily accessible location
where there is good air
circulation. Space-saving
products such as special
power supplies make
optimal use of the limited
space in the control cabinet.
The installation of
the control cabinet must
be carried out by trained
personnel to ensure proper
and safe commissioning.
MAINTENANCE
AND SERVICING
Regular inspections and
maintenance ensure safety
in the control cabinet: Failure
to keep maintenance
appointments can have
serious and also expensive
consequences. For example,
there is a risk of electricity
faults, which in turn
can result in various consequential
damages such as
a fire, the failure of entire
systems or even industrial
accidents with personal
injury. The maintenance
intervals are usually set
by law. In addition, special
measuring, testing and
inspection devices can
support the maintenance
of control cabinets. When
it comes to the measuring
technology and tools used,
it is essential to ensure that
the products are precise,
robust and specifically
manufactured for the
control cabinet environment.
In order to additionally prevent
system failures, fires
and operational accidents,
attention should also be
paid to high-quality thermal
management when
building or installing a
control cabinet. The active
electrical components
generate heat that must be
continuously dissipated to
prevent overheating. There
are various air-conditioning
systems that can be used
depending on the requirements
and ambient temperature.
Whether control
cabinet heating, thermostat,
hygrotherm, axial and
radial fan: When buying
fans and co. it is essential
to pay attention to the high
efficiency of the products.
PROTECTIVE MEASURES
Switch cabinets must
comply with various safety
requirements in order to
avoid endangering people
and property. This includes
protective measures such
as insulation, protective
conductors or residual
current circuit breakers.
Surge protection devices
protect the electrical components
from damage due
to overcurrent and overvoltage
by means of discharge
systems.
CONTROL CABINET
TECHNOLOGY:
THE MOST IMPORTANT
AT A GLANCE
Control cabinet technology
is an important component
of industrial applications.
A well-planned and safely
installed control cabinet
can improve the functioning
of the electrical components
of a system, and
damage or hazards to
people and property are not
an issue as a result. When
planning a control cabinet,
it is important to think
through the technical components
such as enclosures,
door systems, interior,
climate control and
protective measures in all
details in a purpose-oriented
manner. Space requirements
and compliance with
norms and standards also
play important roles. Proper
planning, quality construction
and safe installation
of a control cabinet
require a lot of know-how
and therefore trained personnel
and should always
comply with current norms
and standards.
PERSONALISED APPLIANCE
CIRCUIT BREAKER SYSTEM
In industry, optimised process sequences
ensure safe plant operation
without downtimes and standstill
device circuit breaker system from
Phoenix Contact, supports the requirement
for a direct permanent
supply. Even when modules are
replaced, the uninterrupted supply of
parallel loads is ensured.
The demands on the reliability of 24
V DC control cabinet supply systems
are constantly growing. Not without
reason, high-quality power supplies,
redundancy and UPS modules in
combination with electronic circuit
breakers and remote monitoring
mechanisms ensure high system
availability in more and more systems.
At the same time, the complexity
of planning, combinatorics
and procurement of suitable components
as well as the installation of
such supply systems is increasing.
Individual components of the supply
system - such as circuit breakers -
help to reduce this complexity.
The component “circuit breaker“
is usually only associated with the
protection of cables and lines against
overload and short circuit - according
to DIN VDE 0100-430:2010-10:
“Erection of low-voltage installations
- Part 4-43: Protective measures -
Protection against overcurrent“. The
new customisable Caparoc electronic
circuit breaker system from Phoenix
Contact proves that circuit breakers
can do much more.
Customisable protection:
he Caparoc equipment protection switch system
offers numerous combination options for more
safety in machines and systems.
The first hurdle that electrical
components and assemblies always
have to overcome before they are
used is the design-in by the electrical
development department. Here the
developer expects a complete digital
setup - especially if he works with
CAE support. At Caparoc, this already
begins with the selection of components.
With the help of a configurator,
the right miniature circuit-breaker
system can be put together quickly
and easily from components and supplementary
services on the Internet
page of Phoenix from Contact:
- Feed-in modules with or without
communication interface
- 1-channel device circuit breaker
modules with four output terminals
- 2-channel device circuit breaker
modules with two output terminals
per channel
- 4-channel device circuit breaker
modules with one output terminal
per channel
- Potential distributor modules
- Modular busbars
Further settings are then made -
for example, the definition of the
individual nominal tripping current
per channel or the labelling of the
modules and channels. Despite
numerous combination options, the
configuration process always leads to
the unique, permanently valid article
number and configuration ID. This
considerably simplifies the subsequent
ordering process of the entire
device-protective circuit-breaker
system. In addition, the configuration
can be called up again at any time by
means of the ID and adapted to current
requirements. This also makes
rescheduling and conversions easier.
In addition, the configurator offers
system data sheets, labelling, 2D
and 3D and Eplan data. The so-called
digital twin is thus significantly
upgraded, because not only the individual
components, but the entire 24
V DC fuse protection system is completely
and comprehensively mapped.
the simple push-in direct plug-in
technology prevent errors as soon
as the modules are connected. If not
already supplied preset, the fuse
protection system is adapted to the
application - via the LED buttons
or rotary switches on the modules
or centrally via the communication
interface.
It must be possible to clearly label
the individual ducts for everyone
involved - this also simplifies installation,
initial commissioning, subsequent
maintenance and any subsequent
troubleshooting. In the ideal
case, the labelling has already been
determined in the planning stage and
thus integrated into the item number,
so that the labelling effort in production
is eliminated.
Intuitive operation, easy maintenance, quick troubleshooting:
The simple nominal current setting and the clear recognition of the
connections and potentials increase safety and comfort.
ADVANTAGES FOR THE OPERATOR:
NO SYSTEM FAILURES
The use of redundancy, UPS and
monitoring mechanisms in a
24 V DC supply system faces three
challenges:
- Undervoltage: the supply of the
upstream power supply has a fault
(phase failure) or the power supply
is “weak of age“
- Overvoltage: the regulation of the
upstream power supply is defective
(32 V output voltage limitation) -
a voltage rise is the result
- Current consumption above 80
percent of the set nominal value:
increased load on the channel due
to an imminent seizure of connected
motors or actuators, an earth
fault in the consumption path is
also conceivable.
MEHR
DAZU!
In addition to these three externally
influenced process states, Caparoc
recognises two internal states:
- Channel error on at least
one channel
- Total current shutdown above
45 A: the modules were shut down
in a prioritised manner to prevent
a system overload
These five operating states of individual
Caparoc circuit breaker modules
are collected and reported to a central
control room or controller via the
communication interface. Depending
on the process status, preventive
measures are initiated, and triggered
channels can be reset via a reset
command. On site, the operating
states are signalled by coloured LEDs
directly on the channel. If a Caparoc
circuit breaker module is defective, it
is replaced during operation and the
rest of the protection system is not
affected.
Caparoc offers the system operator
additional safety because the circuit
breaker system can be globally
locked against two unwanted external
influences:
- Rated current programming
lockout: the rated current programming
on all circuit breaker
modules is locked out
- User interface lockout: the operation
of the circuit breaker modules
via the pushbuttons and rated current
rotary switches is completely
blocked
Through these protective mechanisms,
Caparoc makes a decisive
contribution to maximum system
availability.
Electronic and electrical equipment
is frequently installed in areas
where environmental issues are a
major consideration when deciding
which material should be used for
the enclosure. In addition to high
mechanical strength and impact
resistance, stainless steel is also
corrosion and chemical resistant
and, therefore, it is the default
material in many industries: food
and beverage manufacturing,
pharmaceutical production, the oil
and gas industries, marine equipment,
water treatment plants and
the mining sector.
Bürklin Elektronik is partnered with
Hammond Manufacturing, a major
manufacturer of stainless steel
enclosures. Hammond stainless
enclosures are fabricated from 304
material, but they are also available
in 316 grade material. For internal
use, 304 grade material is normally
more than adequate. The higher
grade 316 stainless material, which
contains up to 3% molybdenum, giving
increased corrosion resistance
against many industrial chemicals
and solvents.
Hammond’s Eclipse wall mounting
family is ideal for most applications
with sizes from 102 x 102 x 76mm to
406 x 356 x 254mm. They are manufactured
in Hammond’s Guelph,
Canada headquarters, where a
recent multi-million dollar investment
has upgraded and extended its
stainless steel manufacturing capability
with increased automation that
has improved product quality and
reduced manufacturing times. The
EJSS family offers many features
that offer benefits in both installation
and use. The body and cover
are made of 1.6mm material, with
smooth, continuously welded seams
without knockouts, cutouts, or holes.
The design incorporates a formed lip
on the enclosure to exclude flowing
liquids and contaminants, and the
continuously hinged cover provides
180° opening for good access to
the housed equipment. To prevent
unauthorised access and to increase
vandal resistance, the door latches
are tool operated. Environmental sealing
is achieved through a seamless
poured-in place gasket. The Eclipse
family is sealed to IP66, NEMA Type
3R, 4, 4X, 12 and 13 and are UL
Approved.
The ultimate Hammond stainless
steel enclosure is the UL Approved
HYJ family. Sealed to IP69, NEMA 3R,
12, 4, 4X, it is optimised for use in
food and pharmaceutical industries
where regular high pressure, high
temperature washdown with 15 l/m
at up to 80°C from 150 to 200mm is
a routine requirement. Available in
five sizes from 202 x 124 x 102mm to
416 x 338 x 203mm, the symmetric
rectangular design means that the
units can be mounted either vertically
or horizontally; all sides are
sloped to ensure that water quickly
drains off after spray cleaning and a
super-smooth finish to all surfaces
also aids water drain. The HYJ cover
is secured to the body with six
crevice-free hex head bolts fitted
with a silicone washer. IP69 sealing
is achieved by a distinctive blue
“hygiene” coloured silicone gasket
that is fitted beyond the door edges,
so that there are no crevices in which
dirt can collect. The blue gasket can
be easily removed for cleaning or
replacement.
Complementing the HYJ family is
the HYPB range of push-button
enclosures. Offered with both 22.5
and 30.5mm holes, the HYPB is
available with a single row of 1, 2, 3
or 4 mounting holes; with four holes
arranged in two rows of two or with
six holes in a three-by-three configuration.
Bürklin Elektronik offer in-depth
technical support to help specifiers
select the most appropriate enclosure
for the application. Supported
by Hammond’s library of freely
downloadable CAD and PDF files
for all products and their in-house
modification capabilities, choosing
the best enclosure has never been
easier.
HELLERMANNTYTON
SAVE TIME AND SPACE
IN YOUR CONTROL CABINET
WITH THE VARIOPLATE
CABLE ENTRY SYSTEM
LEARN MORE ABOUT FEEDING THROUGH AND SEALING
CABLES OF DIFFERENT SIZES WITH VARIOPLATE
VARIOPLATE ADVANTAGES
AT A GLANCE:
The electrical panel or control cabinet is a component
that is protected from external influences. It is particularly
protected from dust and water. However, the cable
entry is a potential weak point. The market offers a
wealth of products for cable entry: grommets, cable
glands, rubber profiles and many more. The disadvantage
is that many systems require a number of cut-outs
and drill-holes in order to insert all the cables of various
sizes into the enclosure. Pre-terminated cables
pose a particular problem, as plugs and connectors are
often larger than the actual hole. What is needed here
is an intelligent all-in-one solution that saves your time
and hence your money, while, at the same time, offers
maximum safety. HellermannTyton calls it VarioPlate -
a modular and flexible cable entry system.
- Modular design saves time and space
- Easy to assemble and adjust
- Small and large cable glands combinable in one frame
- Inserts include moulded strain relief
- The design of the grommet hole compensates for
tolerances in the cable diameter
- Suitable for all common cable diameters
- IP65 and IP66 approved construction
CTCC IWS CORRUGATED TUBING AND HOLDERS
AN EFFICIENT CHOICE ALL ROUND:
The practical new holders in the HellermannTyton IWS
corrugated tubing range offer high efficiency and flexibility
for fastening and routing cables corrugated tubing in
control cabinets and machinery.
The well thought-out design of the CTCC IWS corrugated
tubing holders satisfies the need of panel and machine
builders for efficient solutions when fixing, guiding and
protecting wiring.
The focus of the holder is on simplicity and quality
through attention to detail.
The design allows IWS corrugated tubing to be pre-fixed
in the open state until the installer has determined the
final position. An audible click signals when the holder
is properly closed.
HellermannTyton‘s product developers have also
incorporated a recess in the bracket to accommodate
a ground cable, plus cable tie attachment points on
both sides for additional cables.
When closed, the corrugated tubing can rotate in the
holder. A rib inside the holder prevents the flexible
tubing from slipping sideways. If modifications are
necessary, the holder can be opened from above with
a screwdriver and then reused.
The CTCC IWS holders for the nominal sizes 17, 29, 37
and 50 mm are designed to match the hole patterns
commonly found in panels.
PANDUIT
SAFE IS SAFE
AT THE TOUCH
OF A BUTTON
DETERMINE THE ABSENCE OF VOLTAGE IN CABINETS EVEN MORE EASILY
AND THUS PROTECT PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Panduit‘s VeriSafe system
minimises the risk of electrical
hazards by checking
that the control cabinet is
voltage-free. Compared to
previous portable test instruments,
plant operators
and machine builders can
check whether an electrically
safe environment is
much faster present. According
to NEC, specified in
NFPA 70E, an electrically
safe environment must be
ensured before working
with electrical installations
without voltage. The
measurement procedure is
precisely defined. With VeriSafe
2.0, you can automatically
ensure that the entire
test process is followed
for every single test. With
virtually the push of a
button, you can achieve
tested safety for both
3-phase and 1-phase applications
in the now extended
voltage range up to
1000 V for 690 V AC and DC
applications. The fail-safe
design uses active indicators
for plant status and
complies with SIL 3 (IEC
61508-1) safety functions.
VeriSafe 2.0 is ideal for
480/600V CAT IV applications
including outdoor,
service access and all
power distribution equipment
including frequency
converters and remote
motor disconnect switches.
The now extended VeriSafe
increases the possibilities
to protect the entire
electrical area. If desired,
the isolation module can
be easily integrated into
control systems via redundant
semiconductor signal
outputs (SIL 3). In addition,
a network module for realtime
diagnostics and performance
reports is also
available. Thus, test results
can be recorded with time
stamps or data logs, on
the one hand. It can also
background to Panduit‘s
new development is that
hazards and risks in switchgear
for people, production
and buildings must
be avoided at all costs.
Plant manufacturers must
guarantee their design and
compliance with standards,
electrical safety, fire protection
and mechanical
safety. The crucial basis
is the National Electrical
Code (NEC) - legally
accepted as state of the
art in the USA. The NEC is
comparable to VDE 0100 or
IEC 60364 and is published
by the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA)
under the working title
NFPA 70E. In the data
sheet, Panduit refers to
all other international
and European standards
according to which VeriSafe
is tested.
layer into two wires
systems, while keeping the
same level of data communication
performance.
The transportation market,
in particular, highly welcomes
30% of weight reduction
and bending radius
improvement. It is futureproof
and sustainable.
Often, radical technology
isn’t backward compatible
with legacy products or
technologies. To enjoy
the full performance and
benefits of new technology,
old assets must be often
replaced with updated
equipment.
However, there are some
psychological and financial
barriers involved with
accepting and adopting
new and better-performing
products.
- Risk of investment –
struggle to balance the
weight of investment and
running a risk of losing
a competitive edge if not
investing (examples of
Kodak and Nokia)
- Timing for investing –
when is the right time
for the transition?
WERMA
COLOURFUL
AND BRIGHT!
LED RECESSED LUMINAIRE 241 MULTICOLOUR FROM WERMA - SMALL,
COMPACT, WITH UL APPROVAL AND HIGHEST PROTECTION CLASS IP69K
With the new LED flush-mount beacon
Multicolour 241 (MC35 for short)
from WERMA, the user can signal
several states with just one beacon
- and with up to seven colours. The
compact beacon has the UL approval
required for the USA as well as the
high protection rating IP69k. This
means it can be used under extreme
conditions and around the globe.
The MC35 recessed LED luminaire
combines a bright and eye-catching
illuminated surface with excellent
visibility and robustness. It has a
diameter of 35 mm and stands out 33
mm from the surface when installed.
This makes it a good choice wherever
only limited installation space
is available.
The compact signalling device offers
up to seven colours in one light: red,
yellow, green, white, blue, violet and
turquoise. Alternatively, a tricolour
version is available, which combines
the most common colour combination
of red, yellow and green in one
signalling device. Control is via M12
plug - for plug & play. This way you
can signal several states with only
one device!
HIGHEST ATTENTION
THROUGH LOUD ADDITION
In many applications, it is necessary
to amplify the optical signal
with an acoustic signal. The new
optical-acoustic combination 241
is the optimal solution for this:
The bright and long-lasting LED
recessed luminaire in combination
with a loud buzzer. The buzzer
signals with a 3,600 Hz continuous
tone and a volume of 80 dB.
EXTREMELY SIMPLE MOUNTING
AND MAINTENANCE-FREE LED
Thanks to M22 mounting dimensions,
the signalling device can be easily
installed in single-hole mounting.
The bit-coded control enables the
display of the three basic colours
green, yellow, red with only two PLC
outputs. With additional outputs,
the blue, turquoise, violet and white
colours can also be activated.
Once installed, you no longer need
to waste a thought on the luminaire:
With a long service life of up to
50.000 hours, you have a durable and
reliably maintenance-free luminaire.
In addition, the MC35 recessed luminaire
is very economical despite its
versatile performance features and
requires only 25 to 45 mA, depending
on the variant.
UL APPROVAL AND
HIGH PROTECTION CLASS IP 69K
FOR WORLDWIDE USE
In contrast to CE marking, UL
certification is not required by law.
However, WERMA Signaltechnik has
decided to certify the LED flushmount
beacon MC35 according to UL
standards. This enables product use
worldwide and guarantees product
safety around the globe.
The IP69K standard is the highest
protection class for electrical equipment
and guarantees protection
against solid objects, liquids, steam
and dust. Ingress of water is not
possible even at close distance, very
high pressure and high temperatures.
Thus, trouble-free work with
high-pressure cleaning systems is
possible.
VERSATILE USE
Thanks to the seven colours, the LED
recessed luminaire can be used in
many ways: for example, it signals
faults or statuses on the machine‘s
control panel, in the machine housing
or on control cabinets. Thanks to its
compact dimensions, the luminaire
is also ideally suited for mobile machines,
as well as automation and
large systems with many process
steps. Thanks to its high IP 69k
protection rating, the luminaire is
also frequently used in the food
processing, pharmaceutical and
petrochemical industries, where all
the equipment has to meet “washdown
requirements“ and is regularly
exposed to high-pressure water jets.
EXPLOSION PROTECTION:
REDUCING RISK POTENTIAL
IN HAZARDOUS AREAS
Where process engineering systems
are used, for example in the conveying,
chemical and pharmaceutical
industries, potentially explosive atmospheres
can arise. In these areas
which production usually entails an
accumulation of potentially explosive
substances, or which are themselves
flammable – from flour dust in mills,
to flammable liquids like gasoline,
including gases like hydrogen. In
such environments, explosion protection
is a safety-related domain for
which operators are legally responsible
and which influences system
designers’ work. The requirements
on electrical equipment for hazardous
areas depend on national and
international regulations, directives
and standards. For example, explosion
protection regulations in Europe
are based on the ATEX Directive,
which covers equipment and protective
systems used in hazardous
areas.
EXPLOSION PROTECTION
MEASURES
Primary explosion protection
prevents or limits the formation of
potentially explosive atmospheres
from the outset.
Secondary explosion protection
prevents the ignition of potentially
explosive atmospheres, i.e. it prevents
potential ignition sources.
Tertiary explosion protection r
educes the effects of an explosion to
a harmless level.
INSTALLED COMPONENTS AS
POTENTIAL IGNITION SOURCES
In general, explosions occur when
these three items are involved:
1. An explosive substance
2. Oxygen
3. An ignition source
One of the challenges of switchgear
units used in potentially explosive
atmospheres is protection of the
installed components in hazardous
areas. Rail-mount terminal blocks
and splicing connectors are potential
ignition sources.
WHICH TERMINAL BLOCKS
AND CONNECTORS FOR WHICH
EX ZONES?
When selecting suitable rail-mount
terminal blocks and splicing connectors,
system planners must consider
whether a potentially explosive atmosphere
will arise and, if so, in what
form. They also need to consider
whether the terminal blocks used
can constitute an ignition source
under certain conditions. The higher
the probability that a potentially
explosive atmosphere will occur, the
stricter the requirements placed on
components and systems to prevent
ignition sources such as sparks and
hot surfaces. As such, systems are
divided into zones.
Zone 0 (gas atmospheres)/Zone 20
(dust atmospheres): continuously
or for long periods or frequently
Zone 1: occasionally
Zone 2: normally not, or for a short
period only
The appropriate ignition protection
type needs to be selected according
to the zone where the components
will be used. For example, railmount
terminal blocks are usually
designed with the “Increased Safety”
(Ex e) ignition protection type; in this
type, measures are taken to prevent
unacceptably high temperatures
and sparks, both on the internal and
on the external parts of electrical
equipment. Another ignition protection
type is intrinsic safety, “i”; in this
