Welcome to our second issue 2023 of the Quarterly Magazine.
A control cabinet is indispensable for industrial applications. It is therefore particularly important that it is well
planned and safely installed. Door systems, interior design, air conditioning and protective measures must be
thought through down to the last detail. Only in this way can efficient operation be ensured and damage or danger
to persons and property be avoided. In this issue, we provide information about safety, digitalisation and efficiency
in control cabinet construction and give an overview of the most important market trends and present innovative
solutions and products for this.
The topic of eProcurement is becoming increasingly interesting. Not only for larger companies, but also for small
and medium-sized businesses. Bürklin eProcurement relies on automation and thus on the reduction of manual

Mr Mattheus, saving up to 56 % of
the process costs on orders especially
in these times with high prices
for electronic components, sounds
too good to be true. What is it about?
Robert Mattheus: When talking
about savings potential through
eProcurement, what we really mean
is saving the process costs, that
every order generates, no matter
how small or large it is.
Processing costs in orders occur due
to the time spent selecting a supplier
and articles to be ordered, coordinating
with internal departments on
the order, entering and shipping the
order, checking the subsequent order
confirmation, etc. In other words,
they arise from all the things that
people do manually.
And how much do these
process costs account for?
RM: That‘s exactly what we were
looking for! Hence, we recently asked
some of our customers who already
use our eProcurement. The result
was that for a single order without
eProcurement, an average of €60 is
incurred as processing costs. This
may not seem like much for a onetime
order worth for example €6,000.
But the €60 is also incurred for an
order of €100 or €50. Moreover, they
are incurred for each order. So, the
more often you order, the more it
adds on.
And your eProcurement solution
can help reduce process costs?
RM: Yes, because Bürklin

This is reflected in the process

How much exactly can companies

But the implementation of your
eProcurement solution costs time
and thus, ultimately money. Does
it pay off at all - even for smaller
companies?
RM: Most of our customers are
always surprised at how little effort
the implementation causes. For
eProcurement BASIC takes only
15- 30 minutes! This means 15-30
minutes of effort to permanently save
time and money with every order.
So Bürklin eProcurement pays off
not only for corporations and other
large companies?
RM: Correct. But the idea, that
eProcurement is only a solution for
larger companies is still in many
people‘s minds. We assume that
currently only about 10% of the
customers who benefit from our
eProcurement in fact, use it. So,
there is still a lot of space for improvement.
eProcurement is worthwhile for companies
of all sizes, as long as they
have to order several times a week
and these orders require a great deal
of manual effort. It is precisely these
two factors that lead to high process
costs, which can be reduced via our
eProcurement solution. The size of
the company does not play a role.
Speaking of prerequisites ...What
does it take on the customer side to
be able to use your eProcurement
solution?
RM: For Bürklin eProcurement PLUS
the customer usually needs an ERP
system.With Bürklin eProcurement
BASIC it makes no difference what
technical specifications exist on the
customer‘s side. Because with the
BASIC variant, we are very broadly
positioned in terms of how we can
supply product data. In most cases,
our customers can choose between
several alternatives due to several
possible routes. The route that is
taken depends on which factors are
important to the customer.
Which factors influence the
customer‘s decision when choosing
the optimal eProcurement solution?
RM: If it is important to a company,
for example, that employees can
place orders directly through its own
ERP system, then the API or the
stock report should be the preferred
method of transferring product data.
However, with these two ways API
only provides live data, while the
data of the stock report always
corresponds to the time of its creation.
To keep the stock report as up
to date as possible, a daily update,
for example, is possible.
Alternatively, there is also the possibility
to provide live data via OCI from
our online shop directly into the ERP
system. All the functions offered by
our shop are also available in this
case. This saves the time-consuming
transfer of the order confirmation
into the ERP system - which is
necessary when ordering directly in
the shop.
What about companies that
already use a procurement
platform? Can they also use
Bürklin eProcurement?
RM: Yes, that is possible. Our
eProcurement solution is compatible
with multiple procurement platforms
like mercateo, SAP Ariba, Simple
System, meplato amongst many
many others. This means, as a customer,
you continue to buy as usual
via your procurement platform and
still benefit from the advantages of
our eProcurement solution. Depending
on the customer’s need, the product
data is usually made available
via BMEcat, cXMLPunchout or OCI.
And how does the whole thing
work? What is the first step if I
as a customer, am interested in
Bürklin eProcurement?
RM: The simplest method is to
have a consultancy session when
all technical needs and specific
customer wants can be covered.
We then advise not only the optimal
eProcurement solution for the respective
company but also give
tips so that a smooth implementation
can take place.
This consultation is free of charge
and non-binding. With the current
economic situation when one has
to save as much money as possible,
Bürklin eProcurement is one of the
simplest and fastest ways to save

Experts use the term mental load
to describe the cognitive work involved
in the organisation of everyday
tasks. Taken separately, each
task or decision is not necessarily
worth to be discussed, but added
up, they can create a higher load.
Drivers are not the only ones affected
by mental load. Content managers
at Bürklin processing article
data every day are also affected.
Before they are published, data of
an article offered in the online shop
need to be collected and checked.
The quality of the article data is
increased so that articles can be
presented in the Bürklin online
shop as attractively for sale as
possible.
To prevent managing data from
leading to mental overload of
the content managers, Bürklin
Elektronik uses the product information
management system (PIM
system) Contene. In the background,
the system monitors the consistency,
completeness, and accuracy of article
data using a series of automatic
actions. In the process, it relieves
content managers from the necessity
of making small decisions,
points to possible discrepancies in
the data, and thus leads to a continuous
improvement of the quality of
article data in the online shop.
When a content manager modifies
article data, Contene automatically
triggers a cascade of actions and
decisions.
The following example serves to
explain the integrated automatic
actions:
Let us assume that there is a
“laboratory plug,” about which an
article description, technical properties,
images, and documents are
already stored in Contene. Now,
the content manager adds a small
detail to the article data. Let us
look at what happens next.
Product and supplier managers
decide which articles from which
manufacturers will be offered for
sale in the online shop.
The Content managers enrich the
article data sets in the PIM system,
adding relevant information (descriptions,
technical data, images,
data sheets), so that consistent
article information is displayed
in the Bürklin online shop for the
purchasing decision of the articles.
To start with, in the technical properties
of the article data set of the
plug, the attribute “Color_DE” (which
stores the German value of the color
of the article) is given the value
“grün” (German for “green”) in
Contene. Once the content manager
has started to type the first few
letters, a list of possible colors is
shown.
The content manager chooses
the suggestion “grün” and saves
the data set.
All the following steps, [2] through
[9], run automatically without
interaction from the content
manager.
The translation function integrated
in Contene searches for “grün” in a
dictionary of approximately 18.000
terms, finds the English translation
“green,” and enters this term into the
English counterpart “Color_EN” to
the German attribute “Color_DE.”
When creating translations in the
Contene dictionary module, content
managers define, as needed, conditions
for using alternative translations.
A “Stecker” could be translated
into “plug,” but in the context of
“crimp connectors” would automatically
be translated into “pin.” These
context-related characteristics are
automatically taken into account by
the automatic translation module.
In terms that contain numerals, such
as “1-polig” or “AWG 14,” the part of
the term serving as a placeholder for
the numeral is specially marked. For
instance, the entry “{0}-polig“ can be
translated as “1 pole”, but also as
“3 pole,” making the redundant definition
of every single combination of
numerals unnecessary.
Adjustments to foreign language
terms are made centrally in the dictionary.
With a single mouse click,
they are applied to all instances in
the foreign language article data.
The automatic translation function
leads to uniformity in the style of the
German and English article information.
Because the automatic function
takes context into account, the work
of the content managers is simplified.
Customers of Bürklin Elektronik
benefit from homogenous article
descriptors in the online shop and
are able to navigate more easily to
the desired article in Bürklin’s wide
assortment of products.

Background calculations create article descriptors
Contene contains rules for automatically creating article descriptors.
For nearly 150 different categories of articles, Bürklin defined which
technical attributes are used to automatically create article descriptors.
All articles in an article category thus receive unique and meaningful
article descriptors, which in turn enables customers in the online shop
to clearly compare articles displayed in the search results list (SERP).
The rules stored ensure that the sequence of information within the
article descriptors is uniform and consistent. If adjustments to the
structure of the article descriptors are necessary, the rules are changed
and all affected article descriptors are automatically corrected.
[3] ARTICLE DESCRIPTORS ARE
AUTOMATICALLY CREATED
An article descriptor uniquely identifies
an article in the online shop.
It aims to deliver customers all
important information at a glance,
serving as a basis for or against a
purchasing decision.
Article descriptors are automatically
generated in Contene based on defined
rules (see box). When a content
manager assigns the color “grün”
to a “Laborstecker” in step [1], this
information about color is automatically
programmatically added to the
article descriptor according to the
rules set up in Contene.
At the same time, due to the translation
added in step [2], “green” is
now added to the English language
article descriptor.
Because of these automatic additions,
the content managers are
relieved of having to think of possible
effects on article descriptors when
they alter article data.
In addition, the rules, defined individually
for each category of articles,
ensure that article descriptors are
generated according to uniform
schemes. Since article descriptors in
an article category are similarly constructed,
customers can more easily
distinguish similar articles from one
another in the Bürklin online shop.
If a content manager wants to alter
the article descriptor scheme of an
article category, the content manager
merely changes the rules (not the
article descriptors themselves). As
soon as the content manager has
applied the new rules to all article
records of the article category using
a batch process, all article descriptors
conform to the new scheme.
[4] THE DATA QUALITY LEVEL
IS CALCULATED
Since the content manager added
the technical property “Color_DE”
equals “grün” in step [1] and next
the translation “green” was automatically
determined in step [2], the
filling level of the technical properties
increases as a result. (The filling
level is the percentage ratio of the
filled attributes to the available
attributes.) Through the increase in
the filling level, the article record
receives more data quality points in
our example. This allows the article
to be published in the online shop in
the future. The automatic approval of
the article for publishing is displayed
to the content managers by a check
in the attribute “Transfer to the web
shop calculated.”
This automation removes the manual
decision of the content managers
as to whether an article is
to be published in the online shop.
At the same time, the automatic
decision for or against publication
of an article guarantees that the
descriptions of the offered articles
meet uniform quality requirements.
Granular control of the quality
classification of article data is made
possible by means of custom defined
calculation rules, which weigh differently
important and less important
attributes.
In the PIM system Contene, the business
logic of the calculation rules
and the application logic are strictly
separated. The content management
department can change the rules
using low-code syntax similar to that
in Microsoft Excel without having to
update the PIM system.

The changes in step [3] and step [4]
have the effect of newly calculating
statistics attributes and of updating
the panels in the dashboard of the
PIM system Contene.
Contene always provides the content
managers with up-to-date evaluations
by immediately recalculating
statistics after data have been
changed. Based on the figures
displayed, content managers decide
which article categories should be
revised next.

dashboard that display information

Since January 2023, product declarations
of conformity with REACH
and RoHS (EU-wide requirements
for declaring hazardous materials)
have been available as PDF
documents in the Bürklin online
shop. When information contained
in the declarations of conformity
is changed, such as manufacturer
number, article descriptor, REACH
conformity, and RoHS conformity,

Altering the German and English article
descriptors in step [3] changed
two attributes that are contained
in the declaration of conformity
(see box). Contene recognizes this
data modification, triggering two
new declarations of conformity as
a result. In less than one second, a
new German and English PDF file
are created and stored in the MAM
system (Media Asset Management
system) of Contene in the data record
of the “laboratory plug.” The previous
declarations of conformity are archived
and can be accessed at any
time.

Customers may download current
declarations of conformity for all
products offered in the online shop
at any time. Because Contene
monitors modifications to data, the
declarations are kept current at all
times leaving content managers with
no concern of updating declarations.
[7] ALL MODIFICATIONS ARE
LOGGED IN THE CHANGE LOG
All modifications of data in steps [1]
to [6] are recorded in a change log
containing old and new content,
date and time of the change, and the
name of the content manager who
prompted the change. Queries in
the central filter module of Contene
allow the content managers to
search for article data which has
been modified. The complete traceability
of all modifications of data,
along with the archiving of old declarations
of conformity from step [6]
is an important building block of the
data governance strategy of Bürklin
Elektronik.
The business logic of the PIM system
Contene contains a calculation
matrix. This matrix is used to
assess whether article data are
permitted to be published online
or not; see step [4]. A points system
is used to evaluate components
of an article record, such as
“Article image available?”, “Article
document available?”, or “Article
descriptor available?”, from which
a data quality level is calculated.
Only when a minimum number
of points has been reached for a
given article may the article data
be published in the online shop.
[8] ARTICLE DATA ARE
EXPORTED TO THE ONLINE SHOP
Several times a day, Contene automatically
transfers to the online
shop all article data, product images,
documents, and declarations of
conformity of the article records that
have been modified since the last
transfer. In our example article, the
various modifications from steps [1],
[2], [3], and [6] are transferred to the
online shop for the first time, since
in step [4] a data quality level was
reached which permits the article
data to be published in the online
shop.
Contene automatically chooses the
data records to be transferred. The
content managers can manually activate
an export run when modified
data must be immediately transferred
to the online shop.

After the design-in of new assemblies,

the production staff. This can lead

commissioning because the personnel
must first be trained. If the

Caparoc circuit breaker modules
are collected and reported to a central
control room or controller via the
communication interface. Depending
on the process status, preventive
measures are initiated, and triggered

Hammond’s Eclipse wall mounting
family is ideal for most applications

recent multi-million dollar investment

stainless steel manufacturing capability
with increased automation that
has improved product quality and

EJSS family offers many features
that offer benefits in both installation
and use. The body and cover
are made of 1.6mm material, with
smooth, continuously welded seams
without knockouts, cutouts, or holes.
The design incorporates a formed lip
on the enclosure to exclude flowing
liquids and contaminants, and the
continuously hinged cover provides
180° opening for good access to
the housed equipment. To prevent
unauthorised access and to increase
vandal resistance, the door latches
are tool operated. Environmental sealing
is achieved through a seamless
poured-in place gasket. The Eclipse
family is sealed to IP66, NEMA Type
3R, 4, 4X, 12 and 13 and are UL
Approved.
The ultimate Hammond stainless
steel enclosure is the UL Approved
HYJ family. Sealed to IP69, NEMA 3R,
12, 4, 4X, it is optimised for use in
food and pharmaceutical industries
where regular high pressure, high
temperature washdown with 15 l/m
at up to 80°C from 150 to 200mm is
a routine requirement. Available in
five sizes from 202 x 124 x 102mm to
416 x 338 x 203mm, the symmetric
rectangular design means that the
units can be mounted either vertically
or horizontally; all sides are
sloped to ensure that water quickly
drains off after spray cleaning and a
super-smooth finish to all surfaces
also aids water drain. The HYJ cover
is secured to the body with six
crevice-free hex head bolts fitted
with a silicone washer. IP69 sealing
is achieved by a distinctive blue
“hygiene” coloured silicone gasket
that is fitted beyond the door edges,
so that there are no crevices in which
dirt can collect. The blue gasket can
be easily removed for cleaning or
replacement.
Complementing the HYJ family is
the HYPB range of push-button
enclosures. Offered with both 22.5
and 30.5mm holes, the HYPB is
available with a single row of 1, 2, 3
or 4 mounting holes; with four holes
arranged in two rows of two or with

AN EFFICIENT CHOICE ALL ROUND:
The practical new holders in the HellermannTyton IWS
corrugated tubing range offer high efficiency and flexibility
for fastening and routing cables corrugated tubing in
control cabinets and machinery.
The well thought-out design of the CTCC IWS corrugated
tubing holders satisfies the need of panel and machine
builders for efficient solutions when fixing, guiding and
protecting wiring.
The focus of the holder is on simplicity and quality
through attention to detail.
The design allows IWS corrugated tubing to be pre-fixed
in the open state until the installer has determined the
final position. An audible click signals when the holder
is properly closed.

The VarioPlate cable entry system is used for routing
up to 40 cables with different diameters. It can be used
with or without pre-assembled plugs or connectors.
The VarioPlate is available in four different frame sizes
(24, 16, 10 and 4). These correspond to the usual cut-out
dimensions in panel building. Combinable grommets
with 1, 2 or 4 holes are available for cable diameters of
3 - 16 mm (size S) and 16 - 33 mm (size L).

All the Polysafe enclosures‘ external components are
made of plastic, thus providing maximum protection

water from dripping inside when the door is opened.
The door itself is available in two types – with and
without a viewing window. It can be adjusted to open by
180° to the left or right, and can easily be disassembled
if required. Internally-mounted hinges guarantee
a high level of mechanical protection and stability.
A reliable locking system provides protection class of
up to IP66/DIN EN 60529. Various locks are available
and can be exchanged at any time by the end user.
The light switch boxes are easy and quick to install. External

With the new LED flush-mount beacon
Multicolour 241 (MC35 for short)
from WERMA, the user can signal
several states with just one beacon
- and with up to seven colours. The
compact beacon has the UL approval
required for the USA as well as the
high protection rating IP69k. This
means it can be used under extreme
conditions and around the globe.
The MC35 recessed LED luminaire
combines a bright and eye-catching
illuminated surface with excellent
visibility and robustness. It has a
diameter of 35 mm and stands out 33
mm from the surface when installed.
This makes it a good choice wherever
only limited installation space
is available.
The compact signalling device offers
up to seven colours in one light: red,
yellow, green, white, blue, violet and
turquoise. Alternatively, a tricolour
version is available, which combines
the most common colour combination

signalling device. Control is via M12

standards. This enables product use
worldwide and guarantees product
safety around the globe.
The IP69K standard is the highest
protection class for electrical equipment
and guarantees protection
against solid objects, liquids, steam
and dust. Ingress of water is not
possible even at close distance, very
high pressure and high temperatures.

VERSATILE USE

terminal blocks and splicing connectors,
system planners must consider

whether the terminal blocks used
