A.E. KÖCHERT VIENNA
KOECHERT-JEWELER
Taking pleasure in beauty is the motto of the more than 200-year tradition of the A.E. Köchert
firm. The Neuer Markt jewelers have always achieved an outstanding combination of classical
and modern design in their work.
In 1814 Emanuel Pioté founded a goldsmith workshop in Vienna, but it was Jakob Heinrich
Köchert who, by joining the firm five years later, laid the cornerstone for the Viennese jeweler’s
dynasty – the house of Köchert. Since that time, it has been a marked family and firm tradition
that the doors to the Neuer Markt shop are open to well-known artists who, in productive collaboration
with our singularly talented master goldsmiths, have created one-of-a-kind jewels.
« TRADITION
OBLIGE –
SINCE 1814. »
The onetime Imperial Court Jeweler Emanuel Köchert (1825-1879) owed his additional title of
“Kammerjuwelier” (“Chamber Jeweler”), by which he was also charged with the care of the
treasury and the jewels of the imperial family Habsburg-Lothringen, to the renown of the goldsmith
firm. During the period when the firm served as Jeweler to the Imperial and Royal Court,
Köchert’s stars for Empress Elisabeth, among other things, caused an international sensation.
These stars are today once again being produced and enjoy widespread popularity.
Today the Köchert family continues the tradition of the A.E. Köchert name in perfect form
and style. More than ever, the A.E. Köchert firm today stands for an outstanding tradition of
craftsmanship, precious materials, and unique design which combines classical and modern
elements to produce exquisite jewels. The satisfaction of our customers is still our most important
measure of a job well done. More than 200 years of continuing tradition form our
consciousness of our firm’s long history. Everything we do, we do in the awareness of the
responsibility this tradition brings.
MURRAY MOSS
J. & L. LOBMEYR
CRYSTAL AND LIGHTING
Since 1823, the family-run crystal and chandelier manufacturer Lobmeyr has set quality standards.
Throughout its history, the traditional Viennese company has been at the forefront of
developing breath-taking new designs and accompanied every technical innovation in lighting
technology.
Together with T.A. Edison, they co-developed the first electric chandeliers in the world in 1880,
propelling them into six generations of international success, showcasing their products in
prestigious properties such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Besides the highest aesthetic
level of Lobmeyr’s creations, the company still holds up traditional crafting techniques
that distinguish Lobmeyr pieces from mere products, but turn them into works of art.
Created in their own workshops within the heart of Vienna and relying on traditional crafting
techniques, Lobmeyr products open the world of custom and bespoke. This dedication
to handcrafting is not made lightly but always with the benefit for the designer and client in
mind. As such, even making a bestselling object such as the Metropolitan Chandelier, every
item becomes a unique example of the highest art of the trade. This, together with the highest
demand on design creates timeless classics that endure the centuries. This is now ever truer as
Lobmeyr has turned 200 years old.
« FABRICS WITH
HISTORY. »
WIENER TIMES
TEXTILE ARTS AND CRAFTS
WIENER TIMES are Susanne Schneider and Johannes Schweiger, and are based in Vienna.
Balancing on the edge of design, crafts, art and decoration WIENER TIMES fabricate objects
of use with a distinct, elegant style yet edgy. The emphasis is on textiles.
The pieces are all created with an intense focus on the crafted detail and are actively questioning
and pushing the lines between abstraction and function.
Wiener Times was born almost ten years ago from a shared passion of textiles and fabric
design. Through explorations, experimentations, and research across various archives and libraries,
it became clear to Susanne and Johannes over the years that a relationship between
Viennese Heritage and the work that Wiener Times does was emerging, from digging deep
into the vast empires of ornamentation and turning to the gilded spirit of the last century visà-vis
Jugendstil, the Vienna Secession, and Wiener Werkstätte for inspiration.
Over the last five years, Wiener Times has been working with fabrics from the legendary
Austrian textile manufacturer Backhausen for the collections of cushions, bolsters, quilts, and
travel pillows for the home. Their 173-year-old history decisively imbues all objects with an
unmistakable character – fabrics with history – in their intimate leanings in the domestic
space. The opulent, colourful designs by Dagobert Peche and the rigid, geometric designs by
Joseph Hoffmann open up new perspectives and narratives when juxtaposed with designs
by William Morris, Sanderson, Kvadrat, Rubelli Venezia, Gastón y Daniela or Designs of the
Time – just to name a few.
KARAK
HANDMADE TILES
Surrounded by the Alps, KARAK ceramic tiles are created in a former spinning mill in western
Austria’s Vorarlberg region. Nothing in the 150-year-old building was made for Raku — and yet
everything here is as if made for.
KARAK-tiles unite opposites into a well-grounded entity. Traditional Japanese Raku-firing
technique meets contemporary ornamentation in the ceramic workshop in Vorarlberg,
Austria. Karak produces goods exclusively to order in a small-scale, artisanal process. Adapted
to architecture and individual customer requirements, each tile literally ‘walks through the
fire’ and develops its own unique character. Regardless of whether you order one tile or one
hundred, each tile is unique and can never be replicated. Whether for floors or walls, cladding
for a tiled stove or as a room-dividing screen: The handcrafted process fills every surface with
life.
Like the Raku process itself, KARAK was also born by chance, out of an idiosyncratic idea in
2007. Ceramic artist Marta Rauch-Debevec and rammed-earth builder Martin Rauch worked
together to build the first self-supporting rammed-earth house in Vorarlberg. Marta also
wanted special tiles for it — handmade and fired in the same ancient Japanese technique
she used to create her sculptures and vases. With his passion for digital ornamentation, son
Sebastian provided the equally extraordinary design: the Raku ornamental tile was born.
In 2015, Sebastian Rauch and his childhood friend Thomas Rösler assumed the art project
and founded a company. In 2019, KARAK moved to the Klarenbrunn factory in Bludenz. There
could hardly be a better place than an English brick building in the middle of the Alps for people
making tiles by hand with conviction and passion.
BY NATURE AND KNOPP
BY NATURE AND KNOPP
»WHEN YOUR EYES FEEL
WHAT YOUR HANDS SEE
YOUR HEART WILL TELL YOU
WHERE YOU COME FROM.«
Stefan Knopp does not simply create pieces of furniture - he elicits their secrets from the trees.
He tracks down the individual stories of his woods and makes them visible using his own, patented
processing methods, which create unique structures: by charring with fire or by washing
out with water.
Guided by the desire to give form to beauty, Stefan Knopp has been experimenting with the
possibilities of colour and material design for more than 20 years. The result is a constant stream
of new, unique pieces that impress with their pure design with natural lines, cracks and edges.
All furniture is made by hand and the shape, colour and material are determined in consultation
with the customer. In this way, unique pieces with an individual look are created every time.
For Stefan Knopp, the centre of human coexistence is the table – and you get a very special
one from him: an individual piece of timeless beauty, with edges and peculiarities, just like the
people who live with it. True perfection lies in these visualised special features.
GOLD- AND SILVERSMITH, FILIGREE CRAFTSMAN
Andrea Delogu is a visual artist, filigree craftsman (gold and silversmith) and cutler from Sardinia.
As a child, Andrea Delogu gained initial experience in working with materials such as wood, horn
and metal from his father. His grandmother recognized his artistic talent and enabled him to
train with the most famous goldsmith artist in Sardinia, Atelier Orafo Bruno Busonera. He learned
the traditional Sardinian goldsmith’s and silversmith’s art, fine work of filigree and small-scale
production of wax models. Then he decided to study at the Art School Foiso Fois in Cagliari,
which he graduated with a diploma in art.
Moving to the Austrian region of Salzkammergut, he now designs and produces unique pieces
of contemporary goldsmith art in a modern way with processing methods according to millennia-old
manufacturing techniques (Egyptian, Phoenician, Etruscan, Byzantine). Andrea’s vision is
to find a balance between tradition and modernity, for building a bridge between classical and
HERITAGE TEXTILE TENUN PAHANG
The Royal Pahang Weave Foundation celebrates fine craftsmanship from Malaysia.
The Royal Pahang Weave is a Malaysian heritage textile known locally as Tenun Pahang. Tenun
means to weave in the Malay language. The Foundation was originally founded by Her Majesty
Queen Azizah as part of her initiative to preserve the thousand-year old craft of silk-weaving
from her Royal seat in Pekan, Pahang. Her multi-layered approach to reviving and preserving this
craft involved a close partnership with the Prison Department in Malaysia to upskill inmates,
educating them in the traditional techniques of weaving silk.
She then founded a company named Cheminahsayang, to offer trained prison inmates gainful
employment upon their release. The company has now become a space for social inclusion, as
HIYOSHIYA KOTARO NISHIBORI
UMBRELLA AND LIGHTING MANUFACTORY
Founded in the late Edo period (1600-1868) in Kyoto, the Hiyoshiya workshop specialised in
the production of the finest traditional Japanese umbrellas and is the only producer of this
kind of umbrellas in Kyoto today.
Japanese umbrellas made of bamboo and washi paper have long played an important ceremonial
and symbolic role in traditional forms of culture, such as the Japanese tea ceremony
and the No and Kabuki theatre. Today, they are popular as an accessory to promote Japanese
inns, high class Japanese restaurants, hotels and shops. They are also appreciated as an object
for interior design and continue to be a favorite souvenir choice among tourists.
Kotaro, the present fifth-generation head of Hiyoshiya, still produces with excellent craftsmanship
the wagasa umbrellas in the traditional way but has also spread the business into the
fabrication of innovative interior design products.
Wagasa, the traditional washi paper umbrella on a bamboo frame has been an integral part of
Japanese culture for centuries. The KOTORI lamp collection inspired by the wagasa reproduces
the warm atmosphere of sunlight passing through the delicate washi paper. Manufactured
with the same traditional technique and mechanism as the Japanese umbrella, the KOTORI
lighting collection was presented with great success at all the important international craft
exhibitions in Europe.
Made with technical perfection, the Kotori lamps are available as pendant, side or floor lamps
in different sizes and color schemes. They are perfect fit for contemporary interiors and if
needed, can be folded and stowed like an umbrella.
KORAKOT AROMDEE
BAMBOO SCULPTURES AND LIGHTING
After graduating with a master’s degree in Applied Arts from the Faculty of Decorative Arts,
Silpakorn University, Korakot founded his company in 2006 and is today one of the most
award-winning Thai designers and craftsmen.
He started off with training 10 workers in order to provide them with steady income and career
opportunity in the community. Korakot usually has his university friends helping him come up
with new ideas for new creations which can be divided into 3 groups: (1) sculpture; (2) sculpture
and architectural construction and (3) products.
His work represents the local techniques and Thai culture. Colors and designs have been added
in order to make it suitable for modern-styled decoration.
Korakot’s inspiration comes from the environment which he changes into works of art with the
use of natural materials, such as bamboos and hemp ropes. The techniques have been adopted
from kite-making that he has learned from his grandfather who is an expert on Chula kite. Korakot
has added functions into it so that his works are suitable for decorating homes and buildings
today.
Through every piece, Korakot feels that he has promoted simple techniques discovered by Thai
people to a higher level with designs inspired by the surroundings in his local area. But Korakot
is not only the creator himself, but he also offers career opportunities for the locals and by doing
so the community is strengthened and finally will be able to improve its capability. The product
value brings national income which will later reach to the hands of the locals.
