Toxic air pollutants – heavy
metals, chemicals, pesticides
- commonly found in urbanized
regions around the globe, are
largely attributed to emissions
produced by heavy concentrations
of industries and fossil-fuel
based vehicles. A recent World
Health Organization (WHO) report
confirms that around 20% percent
of global diseases and illness
are related to environmental
factors like air and water
contamination – conditions
usually imperceptible to the
naked eye.
The project In the Air provides a
tool to visualize, in real time,
the invisible, microscopic agents
present in the air of a city. A
‘toxic topography’ is digitally
generated above the urban fabric
through the interpolation of
hourly data, collected in
measuring stations. Each layer
corresponds to one of the five most
unhealthy and dangerous substances:
Carbon Monoxide (CO),
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulphur
Dioxide (SO2), Ozone (O3) and
Particulate Matter (PM10). By
differentiating the components,
it is possible to locate the
emission sources and identify
possible actions to reduce their
densities. In the short term, the
project facilitates low pollution
guidelines to plan daily activities.
On the long run, the
accumulation of data may provide
low pollution guidelines for
urban planning.

und Gesundheit auf.
Anlässlich der Ausstellung Imperfect Health. The Medicalization of
Architecture am CCA, Montreal, 25. Oktober 2011–1. April 2012
Während das Thema Gesundheit regelmässig auf der politischen Agenda
erscheint, stellt sich die Frage, welche Ansätze es in Architektur, Stadtplanung
und Land schaftsarchitektur gibt, die mit diesem Thema verbundenen Herausforderungen
zu meistern. Imperfect Health behandelt die Komplexität heutiger
Gesundheits problematiken und zeigt eine Vielzahl architektonischer und städtebaulicher
Lösungen. Essays von Margaret Campbell, David Gissen, Carla C.
Keirns und Sarah Schrank zeigen unterschiedliche Aspekte der Gesundheits-
thematik im Kontext der Architektur auf. Darin geht es unter anderem um
eine architektonische Theorie der Umweltverschmutzung, die Einflüsse des
Kampfs gegen die Tuberkulose auf die Architektur der Moderne sowie um
aktuelle Bezüge zwischen Allergien und gebauter Umwelt.
Herausgegeben wird das Buch vom CCA, Montreal, anlässlich der Ausstellung
Imperfect Health. The Medicalization of Architecture, kuratiert von Giovanna
Borasi, Kuratorin für zeitgenössische Architektur am CCA, und Mirko Zardini,
Direktor des CCA.
