Growing up on a farm in Nebraska, I had to do a lot of work that involved using my hands, which was the precursor for my interest in the dental field. You see, being a dentist is a lot like a mechanic and an artist. I am fixing problems in people’s mouths and making sure that the end result is a fine piece of art that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Over the years, I’ve met some great patients and each one has their own story, but there is one in particular that I’d like to share with you. Two years ago, a 31-year-old woman came into my office in excruciating pain. After examining her, I recognized that she had a tooth that was badly infected and several others that were severely decayed. Not only was this patient dealing with tooth pain, but she was suffering from migraines, indigestion problems, weight loss and insomnia. After learning more about her situation, she shared with me that she was eating baby food because her teeth were in such bad shape that she couldn’t chew. She even brought up the fact that some of her teeth fell out when she took a bite out of a glazed doughnut, I kid you not! As you can see, this gal was dealing with other health issues that were completely tied to her oral health. We couldn’t save the teeth that she had remaining but she was the perfect candidate for the all-on-four procedure. This was the best decision she made for herself. Her overall health improved, and she can finally smile with confidence and enjoy the simple things in life, like going out to eat with family, and most importantly, not suffering from toothaches ever again.
