Tips to prevent slips, STATEPOINT MEDIA trips and falls Slips, trips and falls that cause injury and death are all too common, and they disproportionately affect older people. Indeed, one-third of older U.S. adults suffer falls each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What’s more, a fear of falling can alter habits, negatively impacting one’s quality of life. Fortunately, many such falls are highly preventable. Changes in vision, balance and muscle strength that can occur as one ages can be addressed, and other external risk factors can be prevented. Staying Vital • Regular exercise is important for maintaining the physical strength and mobility needed to reduce the risk of falls. Taking classes to improve balance, such as tai chi, has also been shown to reduce the risk of falls. Many community centers and fitness clubs offer classes designed for older individuals, so be sure to consult your healthcare provider for an exercise routine that is appropriate for you. “Set a reminder to get regular health screenings for bone density, vision and other fall risk factors. Staying aware of these physical changes and adapting to them, can help you remain healthy and independent,” said Carrie Nie, director, Safe Communities America, National Safety Council. Home modifications • “Most falls happen at home, so it’s important for individuals, caregivers and loved ones to focus on keeping the home free of safety hazards that increase the likelihood of falls,” Nie said. Installing grab bars, additional handrails and extra lighting can make it easier to maintain balance, improve vision and avoid tripping hazards. You should also free walking areas of tripping hazards, such as electrical and phone cords and open drawers and cabinets. To avoid slips, use non-skid rugs, clean up spills immediately and wear proper footwear. Community engagement • Individuals and loved ones should look into local resources available that can help prevent falls and maintain older adults’ independence, as well as get involved in efforts to make their community more accessible. Many communities are already engaged in such efforts. For example, counties, cities, towns and universities accredited by the National Safety Council Safe Communities America program, put initiatives into place to raise awareness of the risk of falls and increase older adult independence and safety at the local level. The program also works with volunteer groups to make the homes of older adults safer. For example, one such volunteer group, “Team Handyman,” installs grab bars, hand rails and other safety features in the homes of older adults in Midland, Michigan. 22ndCenturyMedia.com active aging Guide 22nd century media | october 19, 2017 | 5 Tinley Park woman pain free after innovative surgery at Silver Cross Delphine Pankonin loves to spend time with her granddaughter, however, severe pain in her knee limited her mobility. She’s had minor arthritis in her knees for a while, but it started to affect her everyday life, including walking up and down the stairs in her own home. In April, Pankonin, 71, scheduled a visit with Dr. Andrew Ehmke, a surgeon with Midwest Institute of Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, and an X- ray revealed the source of her pain was deteriorated cartilage in her knee joint. Pankonin, who lives in Tinley Park, was able to get a steroid injection, but that treatment only lasted a few weeks. “I told him to schedule me for knee surgery and I’m coming!” she said. So on July 20, 2017, Pankonin became one of the first patients at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox to undergo a total knee replacement using the Mako Robotic System. Pankonin was already familiar with Ehmke, who performed her hip surgery last year. Silver Cross Hospital is currently the only facility in Will and Grundy counties to offer hip and knee replacement procedures using the Mako Surgical Robot. The Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital performs more roboticassisted surgeries than any other facility in the Chicago area. Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System Surgeons create a detailed plan specific to each patient. Patients, such as Pankonin, get a CT scan of the joint, which the surgeon uses to create a 3D virtual model of the knee. The Mako system helps guide the surgeon within the predefined area and prevents the surgeon from moving outside the planed boundaries. “Robotic surgery allows me to accurately restore the anatomy of the knee because of the precision of the Mako Robot,” Ehmke said. “I am still the one performing the operation and have full control over the robot. The robot is just another tool to ensure accurate placement of the implant.” Pankonin said Ehmke explained the whole procedure prior to surgery and made her feel more comfortable. “From the very first time I saw him, I liked his bedside manner,” she said. “He explains everything very thoroughly. That’s why I came back to him for my knee.” Recovery Pankonin is currently going through physical therapy, and she said her recovery is going very well. “Just a few weeks after surgery and Delphine’s recovery is going extremely well thanks to the Mako Robot.” Ehmke said. “I only had to use my cane for one week. Then my physical therapist took it away from me,” Pankonin added with a laugh. “I can walk stairs now.
