Southwest suburbanites
looking for inspiration to
make 2018 the healthiest
year of their lives can
make their way to 22nd
Century Media’s Healthy
Living Expo Saturday, Jan.
13.
The free expo — presented
by Planet Fitness
— is scheduled for 9 a.m.-
1 p.m. at the Tinley Park
Convention Center, 18451
Convention Center Drive.
It will feature 30-minute
fitness classes, cooking
demos, guest speakers and
more than 40 vendors.
Also sponsoring the
event is Ingalls Health
System. KIND, the exclusive
health bar of the expo,
will have free samples
available for the first 500
people attending the event.
“We have just about
everything, from Essential
Oils to natural food
stores,” said Heather
Warthen, chief events officer
of 22nd Century Media.
“You can purchase local
honey, and we have a
variety of fitness facilities
that will be [represented]
there. Even taking healthy
living a step further, we
will have some insurance
companies, financial planning
and even home remodeling
— all the different
aspects of lifestyles.”
Warthen said LifeSource
also is to host a blood drive
throughout the event. People
can register ahead of
time by visiting www.lifesource.org,
or they can do
so the day of the expo.
There also will be free
skin cancer screenings,
courtesy of Skin MD.
In addition to the health
screenings, one of the
expo stages is to be dedicated
to free, 30-minute
fitness classes. Planet Fitness
will get things started
from 9-9:30 a.m., followed
by a yoga workout led by
representatives from Natural
Healing Centers from
9:30-10 a.m. Then, Heart
& Sole Dance is slated
to lead a workout from
10-10:30 a.m., followed
by another yoga class by
Natural Healing Centers
from 11-11:30 a.m. Heart
& Sole Dance will return
from 11:30 a.m.-noon, and
the expo will be closed out
by a half-hour with Planet
Fitness.
“It’s a really great way to
introduce yourself to a new
form of exercise, and you
can do so for free,” Warthen
said of the workout
schedule. “These workouts
are for any fitness level.”
The expo also will feature
a robust speaker and cooking
demonstration schedule,
including a session with
Courtney Smith, author of
the CocoLoses blog.
“She will be talking
about her weight-loss
journey and some different
things that she’s discovered
along the way,”
Warthen said.
From 11-11:45 a.m.,
Danni Allen, the winner
of “The Biggest Loser” in
Season 14, also will be in
attendance.
“Danni will be talking
about her experience
and about how to stick
with your plan as the New
Year starts,” Warthen said.
“She’s very resourceful
and has a lot of tips.”
There also will be two
cooking demos, with chefs
Tim Baran (Joliet Junior
College) and Colin Turner
(Tin Fish).
“With our expos, they
are a great opportunity to
learn about some of the
services in our area and
the local businesses that
are there to help,” Warthen
said. “This is a great way
to keep your New Year’s
resolution and get inspired
[with help from] our vendors
and sponsors.”
Vitality Health Systems is changing the health of the aging population
Vitality Health Systems
has been a source
for health and healing in
New Lenox for almost five
years now.
The group recently expanded
into Schaumburg
and is excited to be helping
all ages of the community
lose weight and get
healthy.
“I want to fight chronic
disease in America,” said
Davis Jaspers, founder
and creator of the Vitalife
program. “Obesity related
illnesses kill more Americans
than any other diseases.
In fact, obesity is
now considered to be an
epidemic in America, with
70 percent of the adult
population overweight or
obese.”
Jaspers is quoting the
most recent statistics put
out on obesity by the National
Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey. And
75 percent of America’s
medical costs will be because
of eight weightrelated
illnesses that are
preventable.
Glen, for example, decided
to do something
about his health as he
aged. Glen is 85 years
old and came to Vitality
Health Systems.
“I wasn’t sure what I was
getting into, but it sounded
like it made sense,” Glen
said of his experience during
his initial consultation
at Vitality.
But afterwards, it sounds
like he made the right decision.
“I was blown away that
my migraines, which I
have had since I was in
high school, went away af-
