Preface Tef (Eragrostis tef) is an indigenous cereal to Ethiopia when compared with other food crops growth in the country; it is highly-valued by farmers and consumers. This is because of its importance in the national diet of most Ethiopians. Enjera (a thin, flat and pancake-like bread with evenly distributed eyes), which is a staple diet of most Ethiopians is made of tef flour. Its special adaptation to diverse biotic and a biotic stresses has made it a “low-risk” crop for cultivation. Farmers’ preferences to grow tef and the sustained demand from urban consumers have increased the production to an average of two million hectares a yeas, setting it in the forefront in terms cultivated area. Research on tef improvement starts in the late 1950s. Records show that collection of farmers’ varieties and selection work begins at the then central Experiment station (now Debre zeit Agricultural Research center) in 1960. Both basic and applied researches have been carried out in Ethiopia as well as abroad. However, despite the importance of the crop and large body of research literature, the information has not been compiled; also specific research progress on tef has never been discussed in any scientific forum. It only received international funding and support recently for its local importance. In an earnest attempt to remedy the situation, a competitive research grant was awarded ny the McKnight Foundation in 1995 under the collaborative crop Research program . this grant has made it possible, for the first time, to organization an” International workshop on tef Genetics and Improvement” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 16-19 October 2000.the objectives were to review past and current research progressed, document available information in tef research, and share research experiences of other crops. The workshop brought scientists together from the National Tef Research program and resource scientists from Ethiopia, USA Great Britain Austria and Mexico. This proceeding presents 29 papers categorized in sections: general, Genetics and breeding, crop management, utilization and technology transfer and experiences from other crops. The last section provides recent scientific advancements on other cereals that may be relevant and applicable to tef research in the future. Each paper has been contributed by scientists who are specialists in the subject area. The Editors are grateful to all contributing authors, individuals and organizations that made the workshop successful and the publication of this proceeding possible.
