Welcome Address Hailu Tefera Dear Dr. Seyfu ketema. Director General. Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization Our Distinguished Guests from Abroad Ladies and Gentlemen On behalf of the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization, the Mcknight foundation, the Organizing committee of this workshop, and myself, I extend my warmest welcome to all participants to the International workshop on tef Genetics and Improvement . We thank the international participants for accepting our invitation, for traveling several thousand kilometers and spending many hours to participate in this workshop. I know that most of you, the local participants, are currently busy with field research activities and we appreciate your cooperation in preparing paper presentations and for your time to be here with us for the next four days. This is the first-ever workshop in tef in its history of four decades of research. We feel that it is organized at a very good time of the year. The Organizing committee has worked hard to identify and select topics for presentations. The committee has also ensured that this workshop offers you a blend of brainstorming sessions and field visit to see tef research activities. For some of you, this may be the first opportunity to see unique cereal crop and appreciate its role to the food security of Ethiopia, which has about 60 million people. Dear participants, In this workshop a total of 29 papers will be presented. The subjects covered are from conventional to modern biotechnological approaches of tef improvement. This workshop is unique in the sense that we will be hearing about the advances in genomics research on tef and other cereals from Universities and Centers that are in the forefront of scientific research on crop improvement around the world. We sincerely hope that at the end of this workshop you will leave Addis Ababa with a sense of satisfaction over what you have accomplished.
