Ladies <strong>and</strong> Gentlemen<br />
On behalf <strong>of</strong> the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization, the Mcknight foundation,<br />
the Organizing committee <strong>of</strong> this workshop, <strong>and</strong> myself, I extend my warmest welcome<br />
to all participants to the International workshop on tef Genetics <strong>and</strong> Improvement .<br />
We thank the international participants for accepting our invitation, for traveling several<br />
thous<strong>and</strong> kilometers <strong>and</strong> spending many hours to participate in this workshop. I know<br />
that most <strong>of</strong> you, the local participants, are currently busy with field research activities<br />
<strong>and</strong> we appreciate your cooperation in preparing paper presentations <strong>and</strong> for your time to<br />
be here with us for the next four days.<br />
This is the first-ever workshop in tef in its history <strong>of</strong> four decades <strong>of</strong> research. We feel<br />
that it is organized at a very good time <strong>of</strong> the year.<br />
The Organizing committee has worked hard to identify <strong>and</strong> select topics for<br />
presentations. The committee has also ensured that this workshop <strong>of</strong>fers you a blend <strong>of</strong><br />
brainstorming sessions <strong>and</strong> field visit to see tef research activities. For some <strong>of</strong> you, this<br />
may be the first opportunity to see unique cereal crop <strong>and</strong> appreciate its role to the food<br />
security <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia, which has about 60 million people.<br />
Dear participants,<br />
In this workshop a total <strong>of</strong> 29 papers will be presented. The subjects covered are from<br />
conventional to modern biotechnological approaches <strong>of</strong> tef improvement. This workshop<br />
is unique in the sense that we will be hearing about the advances in genomics research on<br />
tef <strong>and</strong> other cereals from Universities <strong>and</strong> Centers that are in the forefront <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />
research on crop improvement around the world. We sincerely hope that at the end <strong>of</strong> this<br />
workshop you will leave Addis Ababa with a sense <strong>of</strong> satisfaction over what you have<br />
accomplished.<br />
With this brief remark, I respectfully call upon Dr. Seyfu ketema , Director General <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization to <strong>of</strong>ficially open the International<br />
workshop on Tef Genetics <strong>and</strong> Improvement.<br />
