When were you employed by the<br />
Association and in what capacity? I was<br />
appointed in 1983 as the first<br />
Executive Director and remained in<br />
this position until 1990.<br />
What position did you hold prior to this<br />
appointment and why did you decide on<br />
this career move? I was the Head <strong>of</strong><br />
Metallurgy at the South African<br />
Bureau <strong>of</strong> Standards, Pretoria, and<br />
became closely acquainted with the<br />
South African <strong>galvanizing</strong> sector and<br />
personnel as a consequence <strong>of</strong><br />
having responsibility for the<br />
<strong>galvanizing</strong> certification mark<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Denis Twigg<br />
Honorary Life Member <strong>of</strong> the HDGASA<br />
schemes and the revision <strong>of</strong> the<br />
national and ISO specifications.<br />
At that time what were some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
challenges facing you in this newly<br />
established position? Whilst the<br />
Association had been in existence for<br />
several years it was only being<br />
developed on a part-time basis and it<br />
now became a requirement to<br />
convert this activity into a full-time<br />
one. <strong>The</strong> prime movers at that time<br />
were three general galvanizers<br />
namely Rietfontein General<br />
Galvanizers (the late Walter Barnett),<br />
