Some fashion designers have a
mean streak, often demonstrated in
runway shows rife with uglifying makeup
or shaved-off eyebrows. Does this make for
interesting magazine photos? Yes. Is it
attractive and wearable in real life? No.
Then there are the more insidious
versions of unwearability. This fall’s fashion
hurdle is learning how to wear the colour
grey. From Calvin Klein minimalism to
Marc Jacobs’ slouchy glamour, grey is (and
we really hate to say this) the new black.
The downside is grey’s tendency to make
the wearer look like a dead mouse. Grey
ensembles need texture and contrast.
Choose tone-on-tone shades of smoke and

warmed by beige), and don’t
forget the accessories — big or
glossy or both. Take your cue from
this season’s “it bag,” the humungous
Chanel Coco’s Cabas Tote (right) that
measures a staggering two feet long.
On the makeup front, don’t think you
can get away with nothing more than a lick
of mascara and a dab of concealer. The
superpale look that was so dramatic on the
runway only looks cadaverous in real life.
Apply some colour or risk well-meaning
inquiries into the state of your health. After
all, you want people to notice your
fabulous new clothes, not your pallor.
