SMARTY’S MOTO WRAP FOR FEBRAURY 12, 2013
SMARTY’S THOUGHTS FOR FEB 12
It has been a pretty amazing week with my research for the ‘Australian Off-Road History
Lesson’ that you can read below taking over my life. It has been absolutely fascinating going
through all of the old results yet in some ways a little sad.
Unfortunately there have been some iconic annual events that held a huge amount of
prestige for the riders, sponsors and paying public that have gone by the wayside. The
annual Winternationals Motocross at Tivoli Raceway, the Victorian Grand National, the
Nepean Six Hour Dirt Track, Toowoomba’s Mountain Man Motocross and the King Of The
Mountain Dirt Track to name a few use to be highlights on the race calendar.
Something else that has been taken away from the current crop of top riders is the ability
to rider more than one class at a national level, the importance of winning state
championships and most obvious is the desire to ride more than one discipline.
Going through our sports history it is so interesting to see that riders like Stephen Gall, Ian
Gaff, Stefan Merriman, David Armstrong, Matt Daley, Dave Basham and Ken Rumble (to
name a few) win national championships in two and three disciplines, sometimes in various
classes and on different machinery on the same day.
I haven’t completed my history lesson yet but my aim is to compile the most
comprehensive list of our sports history from the first events ever held right through to the
current results. If you have any info that can help or if I have missed something just e-mail
me. Take a look at what I have compiled over the last week, it’s very cool.
How about Davi Millsaps performance at San Diego last weekend? I have watched the main
event twice now and his post-race interview so I believe I have cracked the secret to the big
man’s success this year. You can read my theory my view on the race below.
Round 1 of the New Zealand Motocross Championships were run on the weekend and at
the time of writing we have no further news on Ben Townley who crashed hard during the
second moto and didn’t compete for the rest of the day. It would be a huge blow to the
flying Kiwi if he is forced to recover from another injury this close to the opening round of
the MX Nationals. There were a heap of Aussies over there and my report is below.
With a little bit of luck I will be racing the 2013 KTM450SX-F at the Coolum club day this
weekend so I should have a story or two to share regarding that next week. I might even
drag the 1997 CR125 out as well and enter two classes like the good old days.
That is about it from me this week, Smarty
MATE, THIS IS ‘THE MOTO BIBLE’!
SO, WHAT’S IN THIS ISSUE?
We are off to an Diego for the
- - RACING IN AUSTRALASIA - -
- - New Zealand Motocross Championships – South Canterbury – Round 1
MotoCity Belray Suzuki’s Cody Cooper has taken out the opening round of the New Zealand Motocross
Championships ahead of JCR Yamaha’s Billy Mackenzie and Motorex KTM Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs while
Gibbs’ teammate Todd Waters scored fifth after a dnf.
Honda’s Ben Townley qualified fastest ahead of Cooper, Gibbs, Waters and McKenzie, before going on to win a
hotly contested first moto from Cooper and Waters, with just three seconds separating the trio. Gibbs was 15
seconds further back with McKenzie a further 20 seconds in arrears.
The second moto saw the Motorex KTM Racing Team KTM450 SX-F of Gibbs surge to the front, while Townley
crashed out on the first lap and was taken from the track in an ambulance. Gibbs then had a small fall
dropping him back to eighth, while Waters charged hard to recover from a bad start, making his way right
through to second to challenge Cooper for the lead, only for his sub-frame bolts to break and the seat
assembly to begin flapping.
Without missing a beat, Waters demonstrated his fitness and rode to the end of the race, standing the whole
way, but he would not be rewarded for the effort, as the bike faltered and stopped with just half a lap to go.
“The flapping rear sub frame damaged some wires and the bike stopped,” said Team Manager Rob Twyerould,
“we were unable to find the problem at first, so we swapped in a complete wiring harness and only just got
him onto the line for Moto 3 at the last possible minute.”
Cooper took the win from Gibbs who recovered from his fall and pushing right through to second, passing
McKenzie on a thrilling last lap.
The final moto of the day saw McKenzie holeshot with Gibbs hot on his heels and Waters back in fourth, but
the Queenslander was in no mood to be denied and quickly worked through to McKenzie, before passing and
pulling away to win from McKenzie, Cooper and Gibbs.
The result gave Cooper the overall on 67, with McKenzie and Gibbs both 58 (McKenzie second from a higher
final moto finish). Fourth was Justin MacDonald on 49, with Waters fifth on 45.

Todd Waters: “The guys are super-fast over here on their own tracks so to race with them at this time of the
year is really good for us. The team is pulling together really well and it’s good to sort things out before going
into the motocross nationals. I’m currently sitting fifth with a DNF which is pretty good, and I hope to get more
wins. The tracks are awesome and great experience for me since I’m aiming for Europe.”
Kirk Gibbs: “It’s great to going over here early and get the feet wet, and these tracks are wild with big, long,
fast straights and lots of fourth, fifth gear wide open stuff. I need to work on my starts a little bit, staying a bit
smoother in the first couple of laps. My last lap Moto 2 was my quickest of the whole moto. I had to close 1-2
seconds in that last lap and I put a pretty aggressive move on Billy. The boys he was all over me trying different
lines trying to get around me before the line. It was good fun.”
- - Motorex KTM Racing Team Announced
M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
This is not really news any more but here is the press release from KTM: Motorex KTM’s all-new MX1
spearhead Todd Waters and Kirk Gibbs revealed the vivid new look, which comes courtesy of their new
generation KTM 450SX-Fs and KTM’s 2013 Power Wear range.
New faces, new bikes and new gear make a very appropriate first impression as season 2013 marks a new
chapter in the history of KTM Australia’s racing arm, and for the first time in three years the team will move
back in-house.
“The new in-house strategy was a logical step with KTM increasing its range of products in terms of Power
Wear technical and casual gear and Power Parts components,” said General Manager Jeff Leisk. "These are
first rate products - top quality stuff, so it was natural for us to want our premier teams using them.
"We’ll see a lot more dealers committing to it and stocking it this year and that can only be good for our
customers.
“We’re also very excited at the prospect of seeing our new KTM 450SX-F this season. Roger DeCoster’s input
into the development of this model is a significant thing, and the importance of it was apparent when Ryan
Dungey used the bike to win the AMA Motocross championships last year, so we’re hopeful of big things from
it.” Leisk added.
The team will be under new but very familiar management; the pair guided by one of the most respected
champion-builders in the business, long-time KTM stalwart Rob Twyerould, with the experienced hands of
Danny Apro as Crew Chief.
“It’s a very exciting time for the Motorex KTM Racing Team,” said Twyerould. “We’ve got Todd who is sure to
be one of the major contenders this year coming back to KTM where he’s spent so many years, and Kirk
making his first step up to MX1 which is very exciting for him and all of us.
"It should be a vintage year for Australian motocross in terms of the depth of talent with anywhere up to ten
guys capable of pulling a race win. We’ve got a really good group of people involved this year and we’re
definitely in with a shot - it could be a very good year.” Twyerould added.
]
At just 22, Waters came agonisingly close to a first national championship win in MX1 last year when he
powered to overall victory ahead of eventual winner Josh Coppins in the final round, but he’s a long way from
satisfied. “I want to be the best in the world and that starts with being the best in Australia," said Waters.
"Naturally everyone wants to win but for me the focus is on being consistently fast and eliminating the bad
weekend.”
“KTM was the dream team back in the Marmont days and Robbie T was the manager who was behind so many
championships, but when I first came to KTM it was just as he left the race team job, so it’s been a dream of
mine for so long to work with him so for myself, my trainer and my family to achieve this feels pretty cool.”
Waters added.
Teammate Gibbs, who finished fifth in last year’s MX2 standings, eagerly looks forward to joining his team
mate in the premier class, and is excited by the challenge of a new bike, a new team and a new level of racing.
“I’ve wanted to get into MX1 for a few years, I’m a bit bigger and I’ve always had to eat less to be competitive
on the Lites." Gibbs explained. "It feels great now I’ve got heaps of energy and I’m looking forward to this
year.
"I want to run top-five everywhere I go and I’m in a great team on an unreal bike. I thought the KTM 450SX-F
would take a long time get used to after all the years on Japanese bikes, but I feel at home, and like I can push
100% so I’m starting to do that.”
The Australian Motorex KTM team had a positive result in the opening round of the New Zealand
Championships yesterday with Gibbs finishing equal second for the day and Waters 5th with a final moto win.
The team’s next outing will be in two weekend’s time at round one of the New Zealand motocross
championships at Patetonga.
- - CDR Announced 2013 Team
Again, this is hardly NEWS I know but this is what hit the press this week: With the retirement of 2012 champ,
Josh Coppins, CDR Yamaha will enter the 2013 season looking for a fifth straight MX Nationals championship
with Lawson Bopping and Billy Mackenzie at the controls of teams factory YZ450Fs.
Competing in the premier MX1 class, CDR Yamaha is pulling out all the stops to keep their win streak alive and
keep the YZ450F ahead of the pack. “I have watched Billy a lot over the past few seasons and his speed has

M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
]
always been impressive,” stated team leader, Craig Dack. “I felt there were a couple of areas he needed to
address and we have spoken about them and now that he is settled in Australia and comfortable racing here
combined with his new attitude and CDR’s on going desire to stay out front, I’m confident Billy will be a major
contender in 2013.”
Mackenzie himself is excited to be on the CDR team and back on Yamaha where he spent a lot of years on the
blue bikes during his GP days. Since getting a YZ450F in December, Mackenzie has been hard at work in
preparation for the New Zealand Motocross championships and the prized MX Nationals.
“The first time I sat on the team bike, it just felt right,” said the Scotsman. “The team has great staff and
enormous knowledge on the bikes and the years spent developing them is obvious, CDR Yamaha is the most
professional team in the pits and I’m humbled Craig selected me and this is my chance to make this year the
best year of my career,” Mackenzie added.
After impressing in 2012, Lawson Bopping is back on the team for his second year and looking to continue his
surge up the field. Bopping surprised many in 2012 with his bursts of speed and fantastic results that saw him
finish in the top five of both motocross and supercross championships.
In 2012, Bopping set many of the fastest laps, qualified on pole and won several heat races and round wins. He
wants nothing more to keep momentum going forward for 2013. “Last year was great and it was a huge
learning curve for me to be on a team like CDR." Bopping explained. "I now know what is expected and how
things work within the team and also I’m totally familiar with the YZ450F so with a good preseason behind me,
I expect my results to improve in 2013, we already have a great base to start pre-season testing and the team
is ready to go. The MX Nationals start in April and it’s going to be a great year,” Bopping concluded.
Mackenzie will be going back and forth to New Zealand to work with and ride for the JCR Yamaha team in their
MX1 championships. It will prove to be the perfect hit out and warm up for the MX Nationals for Mackenzie
and hopefully kick start his 2013 campaign.
Bopping will work closely with the team in getting the bike perfect to his requirements and also spend some
time at the AIS in Canberra honing his fitness prior to the April kick off.
]
There has been a lot of changes to the 2013 Australian MX Nationals so here is a summary of those changes
through the eyes of a racer:
How many points will I get if I finish 17 th ? You will get 14 points. Points will now be awarded back to 30th
position instead of 20 th as is the world-wide custom. Here is how the points are earned: First 35 points, second
32, third 30, fourth 28, fifth 26 and sixth 25 points. The points will decrease by one point with each position to
30th.
How long will I have to race for and how many times in a day? For 2013 you race will the traditional two-
moto format with the MX1 and MX2 motos going for 30 minutes plus one lap, while MXD class will go for 20
minutes plus one lap. Hit the Gym young fella.
Can I bring my 2-smoker along? Yep! The MX1 class is open to 255cc to 450cc two-strokes and 450cc four-
strokes. The MX2 class is open to 250cc two-strokes and four-strokes. The MXD class is open to 250cc two-
strokes and four-strokes.
How much will it cost for my mum to come and watch? It will cost your mum $30 (Adult), you girlfriend $15
(Children 5 to 15), you can get the Beverley Hillbillies in for $70 (Family of two adults and two children).
Do I have to take my bike to scrutineering? No, Tech inspection will be self-administered by you and your
team, but there will be random checks in the waiting zone by the organizer.
What if I am really fast for one lap? A brand-new MX1 Super Pole session has been introduced for 2013. At
the conclusion of timed qualifying the top five riders will return to the start line, each rider will be fitted with a
GoPro camera and when directed they will do one flying lap, the result of that flying lap will determine the top
five positions for qualifying. Championship points will be issued as follows: First 5, second 4, third 3, fourth 2,
fifth 1. Prize money for the fastest qualifier will be $500 per round.
Do I have to wear one of those Helmet Eject System? Yep, all riders must fit a Helmet Eject system to their
helmet. If you are inly fast for one lap this could save your life.
How many riders am I going to race against? Heaps! A maximum of 50 entries will be accepted in each class,
- - Moss Signs With Suzuki
After Brett Metcalfe knocked back the ride, Matt Moss has finally inked a deal to compete in the MX1 class
with the Motul Pirelli Suzuki team for 2013 completing the factory team line-up for 2013.
“I think they [Suzuki] took it off me because everyone at this stage is taking budget cuts, and obviously they
want the number one rider for the team,” said Moss. “They obviously thought someone else was going to be
that rider, but luckily that fell through and they came back to me so I snapped it up.”
Moss looks forward to moving forward and racing with Jay Foreman and the whole Motul Pirelli Suzuki team
for 2013. “I think we have definitely made the right decision and I’m just ready to move forward now and start
racing bikes, racing for Jay and Suzuki, just go from there and see where it takes us,” he added.
- - JBC MOTOS is Born
I mentioned a team with no name a few weeks ago that has Jacob Wright (MX1) and Bailey Coxon (MX2)
contesting all of the MX Nationals and ASX rounds. Thankfully I can announce that the team is called JBC
MOTOS and we will get to see the team in action for the first time at the opening round of the Sunshine State
Motocross Championships at Coolum.
Jason and Bobby Coxon along with former motocross champion Mick Cook are behind the team and I will have
some photos and more info after Coolum.
- - AMA Monster Energy Supercross - Round 6– San Diego
San Diego: 450 Class Report: The Californian part of the 2013 AMA Supercross series finished up with the San
Diego round and Davi Milsaps put together the best possible ride to take the victory and a handy points lead
as the teams head east to Arlington, Texas for round 7.
]

M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
]
After taking a good look at Milsaps performance over the first six rounds I think I have cracked the secret to his
success. Milsaps, with the help of former factory star Ezra Lusk, has put procedures and methodology into the
way he starts and finishes each lap of a supercross race.
Davi is taking away the variables that distract you from putting down fast laps time and time again. Just watch
when Chad catches Davi at San Diego, he just kept riding the same lines, hit the same braking marks and very
rarely did he make a mistake, and when he did he gathered it up and got back into his rhythm very quickly.
While other racers are ‘attacking’ the track, Davi is circulating to a planned lap time that he knows he can do
for the full 20 laps and while his rivals are crashing and spewing off the track he is just putting it all together.
Read his post-race remarks and tell me I am wrong.
The interesting thing is with the AMA Supercross circus now heading away from California the tracks start
getting the little trickier and that is historically when the likes of Chad, Dungey and Villopoto should start to
shine and Davi’s ‘game plan’ will be tested if or when he gets a bad start.
Milsaps start to finish win at San Diego over-shadowed the chaos that was happening behind. With Milsaps,
Reed and Barcia out front, Justin Brayton, Brock Tickle, James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto and
Andrew Short were all vying for the same piece of dirt then Reed crashed from second to join this group.
Dungey got a little forceful and managed to move through to third while Villopoto hit the dirt on the same
berm that Chad crashed on leaving Stewart in fourth with Reed sitting on his rear fender trying to find a way
by his arch rival but as the track got slicker the passing opportunities dried up as fast as the track did.
Villopoto will be gutted to finish back in sixth while on the other hand Brayton will wrapped to be in seventh.
Trey Cannard made his way from almost last to pass Andrew Short for eighth place in the dying laps and finally
the mobile chicane Mike Alessi came home in 10 th place.
In the end Milsaps won comfortably from Barcia who had a similar gap back to Dungey. “I got the holeshot and
I just put my head down and was just riding my solid 20 laps, I was riding lap for lap and hitting my mark every
time and trying not to make many mistakes. I was making some mistakes here and there which were kind of
slowing me up a lot. But they were going fast. It was a great 20 laps. It was a good battle for all 20 laps. I didn’t
have it easy,” said Milsaps after the race (see told ya, this guy is lapping to a set program).
Unfortunately Daniel McCoy was ruled out of San Diego due to injuries sustained at A3. "I won't be racing this
one at San Diego, I got wiped out by another riders bike in the whoops in the last practice session at A3,” said

M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
]
McCoy. "I was able to ride it out for the night, though I probably made it worse as it has been hurting all week
and after trying to ride today through the whoops I don't have enough grip strength.”
San Diego 250SX Class Report: Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson grabbed the holeshot and held off Eli
Tomac for the first 5 laps while championship leader Ken Roczen got by fellow KTM riders Malcolm Stewart
and Joey Savatgy to move into third. Stewart would soon crash and finish 20 th while Savatgy continues to
impress.
Tomac tried a block pass on Anderson before the big triple and when it didn’t come off Eli had back out of the
triple which allowed Roczen onto his back wheel. When I watched Tomac pull out of that triple my admiration
for his race craft went up a notch, it would have been so hard not to pull the trigger on his Honda and hope he
could clear the triple (ala Justin Barcia at round three) but Eli is too smart for that.
Tomac stayed in second and then moved up to Anderson again but this time he made a nice inside move to
take the lead and two laps later Roczen put a nice block pass on Anderson to move into second some 5
seconds back from Tomac.
Like Milsaps, when he is on his game Tomac can smack out fast laps time and time again but then lap traffic
started coming into play and Roczen moved to within a few bike lengths but there was never an opportunity
to pass so Tomac got the win from Roczen, Anderson and Austin Politelli who put in his best ride for the year.

- SuperEnduro Championship – Round 2 - Barcelona
- - RACING IN EUROPE - -
Red Bull KTM Factory rider Taddy Blazusiak made a successful return to racing after injury taking two of three
finals in Barcelona on Sunday night at Rd.2 of the FIM SuperEnduro Championships to win on the night and
extend his lead in the championships.
Taddy took overall victory from David Knight (Honda) and Husaberg rider Alfredo Gomez of Spain. KTM rider
Kornell Nemeth was fourth. Blazusiak’s day started well with a strong 10-lap qualifier in the afternoon in the
Palau Sant Jordi Stadium over a course that riders said was slippery. KTM factory teammate Antoine Meo was
second and Knight finished third. KTM’s Ivan Cervantes and Jonny Walker rounded off the top five.
Blazusiak, Cervantes and Meo set the pace and took the first three places in the opening of three finals but it
was bad luck for Walker, the 22-year-old Extreme rider from the UK. Jonny got his hand tangled in a wheel
when another rider crashed in front of him and he finished back at tenth.
The second final saw riders start in reverse order and ended with Taddy in third while Walker battled his way
into fourth. This time it was Meo who crashed and while uninjured, he retired from the race and did not start
in the last final.
Taddy wrapped up the evening with another strong performance in the third final with a comfortable win by a
5.4 second margin from Nemeth. Walker rallied and finished third, Knight was fourth and Cervantes, who has
returned to the KTM Enduro Factory Team in 2013, was fifth. Walker, who specializes in Extreme Enduro starts
in Hells Gate in Italy next weekend.
Round 2 SuperEnduro Championship Result:
- - Italian Motocross Championships – Malagrotta - Round 2
Red Bull KTM factory riders Tony Cairoli and Ken de Dycker had another big day out at Rd. 2 of the Italian
International MX Championship in Malagrotta on Sunday when they continued their domination of the MX1
class as they get in practice laps ahead of the 2013 MX1 World Championship.
De Dycker and Cairoli fought a fierce battle in the MX1 race on the hard pack surface. “I got the holeshot and
was puling away from the pack and putting some distance between them but then I got a stone caught in my
rear brake and that slowed me down for a couple of laps. Ken managed to pass me but then the stone came
loose and I managed to catch him and we crossed the line almost together.,” Cairoli said. The two KTM riders
were separated by just 0.299 seconds at the flag.
With a 1-2 for De Dycker and Cairoli it was the reverse result of the MX1 race in the opening round last
weekend and left the two KTM, factory riders in the lead with with equal points in the championship. While
the KTM 350 SX-F ridden by Cairoli and the KTM 450 SX-F of De Dycker both dominated the race, third placed
Evgeny Bobryshev of Russia trailed the leader by 34.45 seconds.
Cairoli then turned up the heat in the Elite Class race, again grabbing the holeshot and registering the fastest
lap time in lap 4 of the 16-laps race at 1:46.828. De Dycker finished fourth behind Steven Frossard and
Bobryshev. This places Cairoli in the lead in the Elite class while De Dycker is in third behind Frossard.
“In the second I just rode my own race,” Cairoli said. “It was good to get a good result on our home track and
this was a result that was good for the team as we prepare for the start of the World Championship.”
Rd 2 MX1 Results: 1, Ken de Dycker, Belgium, KTM. 2, Tony Cairoli, Italy, KTM. 3, Evgeny Bobryshev, Russia,
- - X-Trial Championship - The Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona – Round 2
The Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona held the second round of the X-Trial World Championship, where Toni Bou
confirmed the expectations. The Repsol rider showed his good form and offered a great riding performance,
achieving his seventh win in Barcelona, matching the record set by Jordi Tarrés 20 years ago.

M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
With this result, Bou is now 19 points ahead of the second placed overall, Albert Cabestany. His team mate
at the Repsol Montesa Honda, Takahisa Fujinami, was third after a close duel with Adam Raga, who finished
second.
The fans present at the second X-Trial World Championship round witnessed Toni Bou’s second victory of
the season. The several times champion dominated the qualifying, the semifinal and the finale, where he
was the only one to finish the third zone without points.
After today’s ten zones, the rider from Piera had received only 7 points, 14 ahead of Adam Raga, second in
the overall standings. With this win, he adds another 20 points to his overall result, and now leads with a
total of 40 points, 19 more than Cabestany and Fajardo, who are tied in second place with 21 points.
His team mate, Takahisa Fujinami achieved his first podium of the season when he finished in third after a
very close finale where there were also Adam Raga and Jeroni Fajardo. With 7 points in the first lap, the
Japanese arrived to the finale in fourth place, but he was able to finish with 23 points, overtaking Fajardo
and getting a well-deserved podium that places him in the fifth overall place in the World Championship.
“I am very happy, it was a great day in front of my fans. It is the seventh win I get in Barcelona and I never
thought I would achieve so many triumphs. I had another amazing night in this incredible place. This year
the zone were maybe less complicated than before, but that made the race to be open until the end, it
makes it more exciting for the fans, but for the riders in front it is worse, as we have to deal with more
nerves. It forces you to avoid mistakes and take care, because the zones were very slippery due to the dust
left by the Enduro bikes. Now I will rest a bit and keep training for the Malaga race, the next round of the X-
Trial World Championship.”
Round 2 Results: 1. Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa Honda - 7 pts. 2. Adam Raga - Gas Gas - 21 pts. 3. T. Fujinami
- Repsol Montesa Honda - 23 pts. 4. Jeroni Fajardo - Beta - 28 pts. 5. A. Cabestany - Sherco - 11 pts.
Championship Standings: 1. Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa Honda - 40 pts. 2. A. Cabestany - Sherco - 21 pts. 3.
Jeroni Fajardo - Beta - 21 pts. 4. Adam Raga - Gas Gas - 19 pts. 5. T. Fujinami - Repsol Montesa Honda - 17
pts.
The next round of the X-Trial World Championship will be next March 10th, in Malaga.
- - Hawkstone Park Cancelled
Snow and rain put pay to the event organisers who had put so much time into the preparation of the annual
Hawkstone Park Motocross. The cancellation is a problem for riders like Jeffrey Herlings and Tommy Searle
who are yet to race in 2013 with just three weeks until the opening round of the GP season in Qatar.
