SMARTY’S MOTO WRAP FOR NOVEMBER 20, 2012
SMARTY’S THOUGHTS FOR NOV 20
The inaugural ASX series is over and for mind it has been a success. Yarrive and his
team have done an admiral job considering the circumstances and you can bet
there will be vast improvements for 2013 and beyond…..one thing they will learn that
you don’t need a yank accent for their highlight films to gain credibility….just saying.
Chad Reed’s decision to come back to Australia and ride has done two things. First
up it did the series a great favour and put it on the map as far as the spectators,
sponsors and fellow racers go.
Second, it has given Chad a huge amount of confidence in his race program going
into the 2013 AMA Supercross Championship. Chad beat Jay Marmont by 24 second
over 20 laps at Newcastle and Jay was riding really well, it is just that Chad is now on
his ‘A’ game pumping out 51 second lap times over and over again while the rest of
the pack sat anywhere from 52 to 1.02 second lap times – Chad actually passed Ben
Townley twice during the main event – once for the lead and the second to lap the
former World Motocross Champion.
The two Ryans (Villopoto and Dungey) in America will have taken notice of that
performance and you can bet there will be a little more intensity at the Yank SX test
tracks this week.
Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Jay Marmont has cemented himself into the history of
the Australian Motocross and Supercross scene. Jay now owns the 2003, 2004, 2011
and 2012 Australian Supercross Championships and the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011
Australian Motocross Championships. That is eight national championships which is
getting very close to the tally that the likes of Craig Anderson, Craig Dack and
Stephen Gall have to their names….and he isn’t finished yet folks!!
Congrats also goes out to the Carlton Dry Honda team and Gavin Faith for their win in
the ASX Pro-Lites class – Faith is all class, it is just reward for one of the hardest working
teams in the paddock and caps of a very successful year – look out for 2013 with Ford
Dale and Ben Townley signed for the 450 class.
We have heard very little of James Stewart’s SX testing progress with the Yoshimura
Suzuki team – no news is good news when it comes to the ‘fastest soil tester on the
planet’ – my bet is that he will find a reason to not be available at Anaheim 1 –
perhaps a paper cut when filling out a speeding ticket while impersonating a police
officer? Those paper cuts are just the worst and I have no sympathy for the Yoshi
Suzuki team either after they ‘dumped’ Brett Metcalfe.
For the second weekend in a row my return to racing has been poleaxed by the rain
here in sunny (?) Queensland….we are looking to head due West this weekend to find
SOMEWHERE to race…hopefully the 2013 KTM450SX-F will be on the ute beside the
1997 CR125R…..yeehaa!!
Catch ya next week, Smarty
[Pick the date] [Edition 1, Volume 1]
SO, WHAT’S IN
THIS ISSUE?
The final round of the
four round Australian
Supercross
Championships was held
in Newcastle on
Saturday night so I have
the full run down on that
while the final two rounds
of the 2012 AMA Enduro
Cross Championship
was held in Las Vegas.
As per usual every scrap
of dirt bike related news
worth reading in in here
somewhere and at the
bottom of the page I have
all of the following:
- Where all of our
international riders are at
for next year.
- The off-road calendar
so far for 2013.
- The results from every
major off-road
championship completed
this season.

MATE, THIS IS ‘THE MOTO BIBLE’!
- - 2012 Australian Supercross Championships – Round 4 – Newcastle
- Marmont and Faith Take the Titles
Jay Marmont has defended his 2011 Pro-Open title while Yank import Gavin Faith has wrapped up
the Pro-Lites class at the final round of the 2012 ASX series held in Newcastle.
- Pro-Open Race Report: The math was simple, to win the 2012 ASX title Chad Reed had to win the final
race at Newcastle and hope that Jay Marmont had a shocker and finished outside the top ten while Marmont
simply had to ride smart to continue an incredible stream of championship winning seasons.
In the end, both riders did what they had to do but it was Ben Townley who pulled the holeshot in the 20 lap
main event at Newcastle but the Kiwi was quickly relegated to second by Reed who incredibly put pay to
any thought of having to battle with anyone else by smashing out a series of 51 second laps to open up an
incredible 24 second lead and eventual win in front of his home crowd for the living legend of Supercross.
“I’ve really found my feet this past week, coming back home and getting settled in has made me really
comfortable and I feel like I am back on track and ready for Anaheim 1 in January,” said Reed. “The track
was awesome, a credit to everyone involved, like Toowoomba it was a long and challenging lap, and a
rewarding one to get right, I can’t thank all of the fans enough for coming out to support the event tonight, it
is great for the sport to have so many people trackside.”
After a long chat with team manager and multi Australian Champion Troy Carroll, Marmont started the race
up in third before being relegated to fifth by Todd Waters and Daniel McCoy but by mid race the defending
champion worked his way forward to second place and was able to immediately put a gap on McCoy to
comfortably secure second place and win the championship.
“I got a bit nervous off the start and Daniel got past me, I knew he would be going out hard to I planned to
get in behind me, get into a race groove and see if he would make a mistake,” said Marmont. “I can’t thank
Monster Energy Kawasaki enough, they signed me believing we could win a championship and we had a
tough time in motocross but the whole team worked together to fight back, we came out swinging each
weekend and got the result we needed. I’m not the best mud runner but I still finished fourth in Toowoomba
and I think that is where the Championship was won,” Marmont added.
McCoy rewarded his late signing with the CDR Yamaha team with a solid third on the night and second
place overall in the championship. “It was a crazy night going for the Championship,” said McCoy. “I had a
great battle with Jay and passed him early in the night and then Todd (Waters) came up to me and we came
together and we went down, I pushed on and tried to get back up on Jay as the laps ticked down. It’s hard to
put four great races together back-to-back but second place is a really great result and a big step forward
compared to some of my other seasons.”
“I really need a good ride like CDR to prove myself in motocross, I am going to be heading to the US to do
a couple of Supercross races early in the year to give myself the best possible chance at retaining the seat."
McCoy concluded.
Suzuki’s Todd Waters had a fair crack at getting to Chad Reed early in the race but fell back to fifth place
after a small crash then came together with McCoy to fall back to 9 th at race end.
MATE, THIS IS ‘THE MOTO BIBLE’!
- Pro-Lites Race Report: Carlton Dry Honda’s Gavin Faith was odds on favorite for the championship
after winning two of the first three rounds and a holeshot in the main event put pay to the all-out assault that
was expected from championship rival Ryan Marmont.
Leading the whole main with a controlled pace of 52 second laps, Faith was able to cement his name in the
record books as the 2012 ASX Champion. “It’s been a really good season and I’m thankful to have had this
opportunity to return to ride with the Carlton Dry Honda Thor team,” said Faith. “They put all of their belief
in me and gave me a great bike so I was pushed the whole way, the wins didn't come easily and if some of
the other main championship contenders hadn’t been injured then it would have been even tougher.” he
added.
Marmont did jump into second place for a lap or so but was quickly relegated to fourth place by the hard
charging pair of Kade Mosig and Erroll Willis but that was still good enough for second in the
championship for the former champion. “My injuries have held me back for the last couple of seasons and
the team has stuck by me the whole way so this is for them, I gave it everything,” said Marmont after the
race.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Kade Mosig showed genuine pace throughout the series and his second place in
Newcastle reflected that while the ride of the night came from privateer Jackson Richardson came from
outside the top ten to almost catch Marmont for fourth.
Following the amazing achievement of four successive Finke Desert Race wins KTM Australia charged,
Heaton with the job of creating a tell all documentary that not only tells the story of KTM’s journey in
Blazusiak Wins 2012 AMA EnduroCross Championship
Red Bull KTM Factory rider Taddy Blazusiak of Poland was crowned the 2012 AMA EnduroCross
Championship after sweeping both mains in the Las Vegas double-header finale held at the Orleans Arena
on Saturday night.
Blazusiak turned the fastest lap in the afternoon hot laps to earn first gate pick in his heat. He was placed in
the third heat where he took the holeshot and led every lap to easily transfer into the main event. His
teammate, Factory FMF/KTM rider Mike Brown, finished 2nd in his heat to also earn a top gate pick in the
first main event.
When the gate dropped for the first main event it was Blazusiak and Brown out front early. The KTM riders
led the pack for the first two laps before Brown made a mistake and dropped to third. Then Blazusiak got
stuck in the treacherous rocks section in the third lap letting Cody Webb rake the lead.
The two riders swapped the lead for the next four laps but with two to go, Taddy pulled a small gap and took
the win and having gone into the final competition needing only three more points to secure his 2012 AMA
EnduroCross Championship, already had it in the bag. KTM teammate Mike Brown joined him on the
podium with a third place finish.
Blazusiak shot off the start gate in the second main event to come around the first corner tied for the lead.
He quickly moved his KTM out front and led the way around the first lap.
Out front, Blazusiak again had a bobble in the rocks that allowed Webb to close the gap. Webb did his best
to challenge the champion but Taddy did not buckle and remained in the lead. The two riders proceeded to
duke it out until the end, delivering a thrilling display of riding that had the crowd on the edge of their seats
as the race came down to the final rock section. Blazusiak found a clear line and smoothly raced through the
rocks to go on to win the second main event of the night.
Brown was able to successfully climb from his poor start into the top five to finish fifth overall on the night
and bumped him up into overall fourth in the championship.
“It was great to have Taddy return to defend his championship this year. We are happy he was able to clinch
another championship. He and the team have worked very hard for this championship and it is a great
ending to the year to take the number one plate again,” stated Team Manager Antti Kallonen.
FOR 2012 --
– Just for a minute, think about all of the miles travelled to get to each event, the bike preparation for each
and every ride or race, the personal training involved, the ‘shit hit the fan’ moments, the injuries, the battles,
the wins, the losses, the phenomenal jubilation of victory and the heart break of defeat…there is a story
worth listening to in every name listed below…ah, that is why we love racing dirt bikes……
