SMARTY’S MOTO WRAP FOR JANUARY 29 , 2013
SMARTY’S THOUGHTS FOR JAN 29
Am I the only one in the world that can see what is wrong with a pair of old
dudes that start an organization called ‘The Permanent Bureau of the Motocross
Grand Prix’, of which they are the only members, that can randomly change the
racing format of a WORLD Championship by voting on it ‘unanimously’?
Well that is exactly what the FIM president Mr Vito Ippolito and Youthstream
president Giuseppe Luongo did this week when they made ANOTHER raft of
changes to the 2013 FIM MX1 & MX2 World Championship Regulations.
I have summarized the changes below but seriously, the teams and sponsors
need to put a stop to these pair of dead shits, they are not good for the long
term future of the World Motocross Championships!
The news of the J-Star/JDR KTM team finishing up after the AMA Supercross
Championship is sad, disappointing and frustrating. Obviously I am not savvy to
all of the financial details but the Rynenbergs had a really good thing going here
in Australia and they dumped their Aussie operation to concentrate on their
Yank team and bam, they are out of racing all together…..perhaps the old
advice of learning to crawl before you can walk is applicable here.
And now we have the L&M Racing team closing down immediately which
follows the Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki team that didn’t even make it to A1. The
demise of these teams makes Chad Reed look like a rocket scientist because he
put his team together in a matter of months and Two Two Motorsports looks like it
is here to stay for as long as Reed wants to keep racing.
Round 1 of my local club champs
at Coolum were supposed be last
Sunday bit we got stormed out.
Bugga, the 450 was good to go
with Carl from Performance
Decal Services whacking on new
numbers and Darren from Link
International sorting a set of the
gnarliest Pirelli sand tyres I have
ever seen, look out when we
finally get to go racing!!
Take a good look at some of the regular stuff below, there have been a lot of
up-dates to race teams and calendars.
See ya next week, Smarty.
MATE, THIS IS ‘THE MOTO BIBLE’!
SO, WHAT’S IN THIS ISSUE?
The annual Mantova Starcross
- - Townley Wins Woodville GP – Just!
M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
Former World and AMA Champion Ben Townley (Carlton Dry Honda CRF450) has defended his Woodville GP
title after day long battles with Cody Cooper, Todd Waters and current GP star Jake Nichols who rode the
event on a KTM250SX-F.
.
Townley dropped one moto in the MX1 class to Cody Cooper to win the day by just three points and in the
one-off feature race Townley had to fight back from third place when British MX2 class rider Jake Nicholls
pulled the holeshot from KTM450SX-F mounted Todd Water.
Unfortunately Waters crashed just a few laps into the race handing Townley second spot and then it took
some time before Townley could run down the 250cc mounted Nicholls to take the hard fought win. "I've left
things a little bit later in my build-up for the nationals and I guess that showed today," he said. "It was
certainly a tough day at the office. I feel pretty battered and bruised. I was hitting track marker pegs all over
the place."
GNCC champion Paul Whibley is in NZ catching up with family before heading back to the U.S to defend his
title but he did turn up to take his Sargent Yamaha BikesportNZ.com supplied YZ450F to win the River Race
that is held as part of the Woodville GP weekend activities.
Invitation feature race: 1. Ben Townley (Tauranga, Honda). 2. Todd Waters (Australia, KTM). 3. Kirk Gibbs
(Australia, KTM). 4. Michael Phillips (Rotorua, Honda). 5. Jake Nicholls (Great Britain, KTM).
MX1 class: 1. Ben Townley (Tauranga, Honda) 72 points; 2. Cody Cooper (Mount Maunganui, Suzuki) 69; 3
(Tie) Justin McDonald (Christchurch, Honda) and Michael Phillips (Rotorua, Honda) 50.
MX2 class: 1. Jake Nicholls (Great Britain, KTM) 75; 2. Scott Columb (Queenstown, Yamaha) 60; 3. Darryll King
(Hamilton, Yamaha) 58.
- - 2013 Yamaha Junior Racing Goes BIG!
Yamaha Junior Racing (YJR) returns for the 2013 motocross season with a strong 11 rider line up across five
states with its hands-on approach including an ex- professional racer overseeing the development of the riders
and bikes, has proven to be ultra-successful with several state and national championships victories in 2012.
Each team has its own dedicated manager who is at the track working with the riders to provide the best
environment for not only racing but also maturing as a person in sport. Again the full range of Yamaha’s
motocross bikes will be in action, from the small wheel YZ85, to the screaming YZ125 and the YZ250F with
riders ranging from nine years old through to 15.
“The YJR program has been a great asset to Yamaha and the success both on and off the track has been very
rewarding,” said Yamaha motorsport manager Ray Howard. “In 2012, the teams won many state
championships as well as two national championships and have a huge presence in the junior racing scene, we
believe YJR plays a vital part in developing Australian junior motocross talent and Yamaha is happy to continue
our involvement in 2013.”
Each state team competes in their respective regional and state based events before all coming together for
the Australian Junior Motocross Championship in September. On top of that, a host of selected events, such as
the Australian Supercross Championships are also contested and give the riders a wide variety of racing and
experience.
Racing gets under way in February in most states and the teams can be followed on Facebook via
- - Cameron McFarlane 7 Motorsport
Thanks to my club day being cancelled I decided to head to the cinema last Sunday with my two daughters to
watch ‘Parental Guidance’ and bugga me dead who do I run into? Cameron McFarlane and his little daughter
Lilly were there to watch the same movie and Cam filled me in with what has been doing lately.
The former multi Aussie Junior Champ and brother of the late Andrew McFarlane is back riding and coaching
through his Cameron McFarlane 7 Motorsports operation with the help of Full Throttle Husqvarna and a series
of other sponsors. The cool thing is that Cameron has scored quite a few sponsors from outside the
motorcycle industry as well as key sponsors from inside our industry.
Cameron is conducting motocross schools and private coaching sessions around SEQ and is keen as mustard to
help out everyone from dead-set beginners through to Pros who are looking to gain some speed. Cameron’s
phone number is 0488 083 676 and his e-mail is cameron.mcfarlane@y7mail.com.
The movie was a cracker too and Lilly won the loudest laugh competition.
- - RACING IN AMERICA - -
- - AMA Monster Energy Supercross - Round 4 - Oakland
450 Class Report: With Jake ‘Sookie’ Weimer out with a head cold the 450 riders took the tight and technical
Oakland layout like a fat kid in a lolly shop but when it was all said and done Ryan Villopoto ruled round four.
RV was on fire all day and blitzed his heat and once he got the holeshot in the main it was all about what was
going on behind Villopoto as the 20 laps rocked on. RV was the only rider to get into the 54 second lap time
and finished the main over 10 seconds ahead of championship leader Davi Millsaps.
“The points race is what we are going after, and winning the holeshot gives you a great advantage,” said
Villopoto. “We made some changes to the bike today that I think really helped us out there tonight, so hats off
to my team. It is a long season, and we are going to keep plugging away.”
When I got my first look at the Oakland track map during the week I raised my eye brows at the whoop section
straight out of the first corner and sure enough it was that whoop section that caused the biggest pile up that I
have seen in supercross for years.
]
M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
And they were a shit set of whoops with square edges and ruts all through them so when 20 riders came
charging out of the first corner Chad Reed dove off to his right to get a clear run but Chad’s CRF spewed
sideway immediately and just as Chad had sort of got some control he made contact with Josh Grant who was
blitzing the whoops on the inside. Riders don’t practice going through square edges, rutted out whoops so this
was bound to happen.
With the number 22 and 33 bikes locked together they smashed their way into the right hand berm taking
James Stewart and Justin Barcia down with them while Trey Canard and Ryan Dungey were left high on the
berm while everyone else on the inside was forced to take drastic measures to stay out of the pile up. In fact it
was only RV, Justin Brayton and Millsaps who got through the second turn without some form of delay.
While Stewart and Barcia limped back to their trucks, Millsaps got by Brayton on the second lap to take over
the runner up position and put together a solid 20 lap main event to extend his points lead to 7 as the circus
heads back to Anaheim for round 5.
Ryan Dungey made his way from his poor start and second corner mishap to finally put the KTM on the
podium while Trey Canard finish fourth after a tough 20 lapper that had him off his bike in turn two then again
a few laps later when he jumped onto the tuff blocks and crashed.
With the L&MC Chapparal team folding this week Andrew Short was parked under the Kranyak Racing rig with
a production Honda CRF450 with Enzo KYB forks, a high compression piston and an FMF pipe. The good news
is that Short was able to put in a solid night and garner a solid sixth in the main.
Speaking of the Kranyak team, they were helping out Josh Hansen but the former Australian Supercross
Champion fell sick and was forced to miss this Oakland.
Chad managed to get back to 12 th place after being half a lap down on the field and was keeping pace lap time
wise with RV and Millsaps when he had a clear track and has managed to keep fifth place in the championship
heading to A3.
Daniel McCoy crashed out of his heat race but managed to put together some good sub 1 minute times on his
way to sixth in the LCQ.
250 Class Report: It was definitely Ken Roczen’s night. The German rode superbly throughout practice,
qualifying and his heat and with the championship leader out of the main Roczen simply run down early leader
Cole Seeley and took off to a relatively easy win.
“I am so happy with this win tonight,” said Roczen who now leads the championship. “There was a lot of bar
banging on that opening lap, but I charged hard and got out front. I am excited to bring this momentum back
to Angel Stadium next weekend.”
Seely has led most of the main event laps over the last two main events but for the second week in a row the
TLD Honda pilot lost the lead late in the race but thanks to Tomac’s dnf Seely now sit second in the
championship.
And as far as Tomac goes, it simply wasn’t the championship leaders night with a poor start in the heat and a
struggle back to 7 th place then in the main event a first corner crash followed by a major swap out and crash
on the same whoops that would later catch out half of the 450 main event riders put a stop to Tomac’s
dominance of the class.
With five rounds remaining Tomac now trails Roczen by 15 points so the defending champion is going to have
to win the five remaining rounds if Roczen stays trouble free and continues with second place finishes. It is
going to be an interesting five rounds that is for sure.
The surprise package for so far this season me is the J-Star/JDR KTM rookie Joe Savatgy. The former Australian
Junior Motocross Champion is getting great starts and riding hard and smart. Joe currently sits 12 th in the
points after bouncing back from a poor round 1 and is definitely a star of the future – pity he signed with the
wrong team this year but I am sure he will get a ride from someone.
Kade Mosig managed to transfer to the main event from his heat with a solid ninth place while Cachia JUST
missed out on a direct transfer with an 11th in his heat then he blitzed the LCQ to join the main event runners
for the second time this season.
M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
]
Mosig basically spent most of the main at the rear of the field but Cachia had made ground and was as far up
as 13 th before a late crash put him back in 16 th place at the checkered flag, one spot in front of Mosig. Cachia
now sits 19 th in the championship.
- - J-Star/JDR KTM Closing Down
M A T E , T H I S I S ‘ T H E M O T O B I B L E ’ !
]
This is the press release received during the week: JDR Motorsports would like to take this opportunity to
thank its incredible staff, sponsors and loyal fans for their dedication, belief and encouragement over the past
six years. We have appreciated your support, and for this reason it is with much regret that we announce that
JDR will close down at the end of the AMA Supercross season, if we cannot find additional funding.
We at JDR have always sought to set high standards for ourselves and have endeavored to live up to these
standards, which is why we are announcing our closure early. We had full intentions of seeing the year out but
with the costs of running a professional team we cannot continue the cost personally.
We have worked tirelessly on gaining the support of the much needed sponsors but with the current economy
this simply has not happened. We have never run our business to get ahead of others, but rather to get ahead
of ourselves, to break our own records and to improve what we did yesterday with today.
JDR has achieved so much over such a short period of time including: 5 Australian titles, many race wins and
podiums, a podium at the Motocross of Nations and a podium in the US.
We have created the Dream Ride Series which has set the bench mark for this type of filming and has been
done on a small budget and with the help of our sponsors, making the series elaborate without being
expensive.
Our staff has been JDR’s greatest asset and has been like extended members of our family. We would like to
make particular mention to Nate Ramsay who has always been a gentlemen and an inspiration to our riders,
our team and us.
To Vince Berinii who has dedicated his professional and personal life to make our bikes way beyond what we
could have ever expected. We would like to thank Rene, Justin, Richard and Tony for their tireless work on
spinning the spanners day and night.
To Ash Simpson who has worked with us from the beginning with our marketing and Jason McAlpine who
helped Dream Ride rise from a thought to a reality.
Thank you Dirk for not only driving our truck on those long road journeys but for being one of the most
There are many people who we would like to thank but wouldn’t have enough space to fit them all in. Some of
those that we would like to mention are: Andrew ‘Sharky’ McFarlane, who believed in our dream from our
inception and was one of the driving forces behind our vision. Andrew may not be with us today in person but
in spirit we honor his memory. We take this opportunity to thank Ron McFarlane who stayed with us and
continued to believe in the dream. Ron and Norma you are both inspirations and we thank you.

- - L&Mc Racing Ceases Racing Immediately
The L&Mc racing team sent out this statement: L&Mc Racing will regrettably cease team racing operations for
the 2013 season, immediately, as the result of circumstances beyond the team’s control.
L&Mc Racing principals, 7-time Supercross champion Jeremy McGrath and Team Manager, Larry Brooks, as
well as their rider Andrew Short, are committed to running a program with the utmost level of professionalism
however, recent unforeseen events outside of the team’s control have prevented that from occurring.
Larry Brooks and Jeremy McGrath wish their friend and colleague Andrew Short, the best of success in 2013 as
he continues on with his career.
According to McGrath, “We did our best to keep Andrew out on the track but forces out of our control
dictated that we conclude the season much earlier than we anticipated or planned," he stated. "Andrew is a
class act and we wish him success throughout the rest of the season and beyond with his new team.”
While Larry Brooks added, “Andrew has proven himself to be a great rider over the years, and my hope is that
2013 be no different for him.”
- - 2013 Amsoil Arenacross - BOK Center - Tulsa, OK
It was a memorable night for AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, on
Saturday as Ricky Carmichael, five time Monster Energy Supercross Champion, was on hand inside the BOK
Center, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to watch a captivating night of action won by Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL
Kawasaki presented by Maxxis teammates Tyler Bowers, in the Arenacross Class, and Tyler Villopoto in the
Arenacross Lites Class.

Carmichael made his first AMSOIL Arenacross appearance of the 2013 season at the fourth stop of the
championship, serving as the guest of honor for the sport’s first visit to Tulsa since the 2011 season.
Carmichael began his day by taking to the track alongside the stars of AMSOIL Arenacross in practice, laying
down some hot laps and getting a sense of the highly technical abilities of these riders. After spending the
afternoon in the pits with the riders and team personnel, Carmichael welcomed fans at the pre-race Monster
Energy Track Party, signing autographs and taking pictures for those who attended.
A little later, he brought the crowd to its feet when he officially welcomed Tulsa fans to the all new AMSOIL
Arenacross with a lap around the track during opening ceremonies. After assisting with some broadcast duties
during the races, Carmichael joined the riders at the post-race autograph session, thanking fans for their
support of AMSOIL Arenacross.
“My weekend here in Tulsa has been great,” exclaimed Carmichael. “I’m impressed with how smooth
everything is and being able to do an autograph signing on the track with the fans right there on the floor
walking around was great. The interaction in general is really cool with how close the fans can get. The level of
competition on the track was really high. I’m just excited that I’m a part of the new AMSOIL Arenacross.”
Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, which is exclusive to AMSOIL Arenacross, will serve as the official stepping
stone for the future’s brightest stars on their path to Monster Energy Supercross. “The Road to Supercross is
going to be a great step for AMSOIL Arenacross and all the young riders coming up.,” Carmichael added. “I
think as these young riders come up from the amateur ranks, into AMSOIL Arenacross will add excitement and
make it even more competitive than it is now. I think it’s great for the future of Monster Energy Supercross, as
AMSOIL Arenacross will serve as a great avenue for these young kids to come through and cut their teeth. In
every other sport you have to put your time in, so this is a great step for this sport.”
On the track, the action inside the BOK Center didn’t disappoint. In the first Arenacross Class Main Event of
the night, Bowers moved into the lead by the second lap and pulled away for a comfortable win to put him in
position for the overall. It was the 10 th Main Event win in 13 attempts this season for Bowers. Team Faith/FLY
Racing KTM’s Kelly Smith followed in second, while Mosites Motorsports Kawasaki’s Michael McDade finished
third.
