New Siddurim (Prayerbooks) Coming to TKE
by Mitch Halpert
Have you noticed that many of the siddurim (prayer books) at Temple Kol Emeth are in less than ideal condition? Due to high turnout
at Shabbat services and the use of the same siddurim for over a decade, these books have seen a lot of use.
Thanks to the generosity of many congregants who have donated to the Prayerbook fund over the last few years, and another large
donation, Temple Kol Emeth is excited to announce that new Siddurim have been ordered for use at TKE’s Sabbath services for both
Friday nights and Saturdays.
Mishkan T'filah: A New Reform Siddur was initially published late last year by the Central Conference of American Rabbis
(CCAR). It is in high demand and our order should arrive by the end of May. Aside from the fact that they will be in mint condition,
congregants and clergy who have seen the new Siddur have praised the content and layout. The CCAR website provides the following
description:
Mishkan T’filah is the first new Siddur for the North American Reform Movement in more than thirty years. Including services for
Shabbat, weekdays and festivals, as well as other occasions of public worship, and texts for more than a hundred songs, Mishkan
T’filah reflects the full diversity of our Movement. This new Siddur includes:
• Broad selection of readings including beloved passages from our Reform liturgical tradition and great poetic
writings from throughout Jewish history
• Faithful, elegant translations
• Contemporary, gender-inclusive English
• Theological and stylistic diversity
• Extensive commentaries, source notes and usage guides
• More than 100 contemporary and traditional song texts
• Transliteration
• Two-color printing enhances usability
• Hardcover with page size of 9.5” tall by 7.25” wide.
• Hebrew opening [pages turn from right to left]
Torah Chanting – a new opportunity to continue learning
In preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah, TKE students spend six months or more learning their Torah and Haftorah. Congregants and
guests of the B’nai Mitzvah families are rightfully proud of their students’ achievements.
Temple Kol Emeth clergy and ritual committee want to encourage students to maintain their new Torah cantillation knowledge, but
unfortunately, many of new young adults do not get an opportunity have a repeat performance. The ritual committee has encouraged
TKE high school students to volunteer to chant Torah during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and we intend to continue that
tradition.
In addition, the TKE ritual committee has initiated a new opportunity for students to chant Torah. Approximately a year after their
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, students will be honored with an invitation to chant Torah, in short, a “repeat performance” at TKE Shabbat
services.
Whether you are a student or an adult, if you want to chant Torah, or if you have any questions about chanting Torah, please contact
ritual committee member, Mitch Halpert, at 770-853-2210 or mitch.halpert@huber.com.
