i 14 - sports Here come those tough BC Rams by Dwight Moore for The Observer It Just might be the biggest game of the year for the Southington High Football team. The Knights, who have rebounded after a shaky fh-st half of the season, have the chance to play spoiler But they'll be facing some heavy duty competition against Bristol Central. this Saturday in a 1:30 home game The Rams, fourth ranked in the state this week are still undefeated wdh a_n 8-0 record and are coming offa 28-7 win over New Britain. BC has been ranked at or near the top of the Class MM playoff standings and a win against the Knights will move them closer to a spot in the championship game. However a victory for the Knights will definitely be a feather tn their caps and also could be.considered a big upset. SBS is ninth ranked in the Class LL playoff standings. After a 2-3 beginning. Southington has put it together. Two straight victories have gotten them above the .500 mark as they beat Platt 22-7 Friday night. The victory gave them a season sweep over the Meriden schools. The win also improved their record to 3-1 in the CCC South Division while Platt, last year's CCC South champs and Class SS runner-ups. dropped ta In heading into a big g me, a team needs to have three things if they're hoping to succeed. First of all, they need both a good offense and a fine defense to comvl........ it. In t.,he last two v.,i. , the Knights have gotten both. Offensively they've averaged 343.5 yards per game and Just as impressively have a 280-yard rushing average in the two contests The Knights have let in Just 62.5 yards in the two wins a nd have allowed Just 115 yards passing in both games. But Just as importantly they need to be up for it and have a positive attitude. After the last play was run against Platt, you could Just tell that the team was sky high. "What can I say. I'm proud of all of them." said an exuberant SHS Coach Dom D'Angelo after the game. "They're all great. They were phenomenal and they wanted it and came to play," he added. The game was played on a blustery cold night at Ceppa Field which forced both teams to rely on the running game. While the teams combined for a 14-for-33 night with four interceptions and a TD, mistakes shaped the outcome. Both teams battled to a scoreless first quarter as they each picked up an interception. With Just over half the second quarter expired, SHS made the first move. A short punt by PHS gave the Knights the ball at the Panther 28. Kevin Ruoffwas 6-of- 17 for 45 yards and two interceptions for the Knights but got them started with a 10-yarder to Mike Forgione. One play later, AI Rainey, who's literally done it all on the ground for Southington, got them into lield goal range. Runs of five and two yards moved them to the 11 where Kevin Cox booted a 28-yard field goal. But after Rainey lost five yards, Ruoff netted an 11yarder to Greg Gorr setting up a fourth and nine. Rainey then ran right for a nineyarder with 1:29 to go making it 9-0. The second half was barely two minutes old when PHS broke the ice. Starting at the 34, they needed two big plays. The first was Mike Mowicky's 23-yard run getting them to the 37. A four-yard run by Eric Toogood was followed by the second big play, a 33-yard TD pass from Bo Ryan to Scott Levenduskl in the left side of the end zone. That made it 9-7 in favor of SHS. Toogood was Platt's leading rusher with 38 yards on nine carries while Nowicky had 32 yards on three carries. But that's as close as Platt could get as SHS clinched the game on the next series. After Gorr's.3Cive-yard run got them to the 39, Rainey and Ruoff did the rest. Rainey n twice for 17 yards while Ruo hit for 12 yards on passes to Ron Hardy and Jeff Sioch until they faced fourth and two at the Platt 3 . Rainey's 22-yard burst gave them first and goal at the 10. Three plays later, Sioch went up the middle for a seven-yard score, his first on the ground. The score then became 16-7 with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Southington finished the scoring with 2:14 to play on a one-yard Rainey run. Gorr ended the game with 18 yards on eight rushes and had two catches for 19 yards. SHS wound up with 263 yards on the grmmd @ © © 0 Any sports news? Southing on's 'Mr.T' to defend title by P.Gary Crawford ports Editor New aven-The Italian version of a little Mr.'I" will be going up against Ken Mitchell, as boxing returns to the New Haven Coliseum Saturday, November 28th. Southington trained Luigi Camputaro will defend his European Flyweight title against New York's Mitchell, on the road to the World Boxing Council Superflyweight Championship. Led by manager and promoter Ron Souza ofthe Wallingford-based Dynamite Production Company, boxing will once again take over center stage in New Haven, after an absence ofover 40 years. The fight originally scheduled for Miami, site of Mitchell's training grounds, got moved up north because of a, *better payday[" Hall-of-Famer Willie Pep, possessor of 229 wins. most ever recorded in boxing history told me,"Boxlng Just faded from New Haven and it's been awhile since Connecticut can call someone their own. The Southington Gym on Summer Street is one of the finest in the state. There will bc eight fights on the card Thanksgiving weekend, culminating with the 10-round bantamweight fight, which should begin around 9:30 pm. Another coaches honor for Fontcr a SHS baseball coach John Fontana by Gary Crawford sports editor Joe DiMaggio hall-of-fame New York Yankee great is now known as Mister Coffee, but John Fontana Hall-of-Fame inductee will always be known as Mister Baseball, in these parts. At the Aqua turf Club on Saturday, December 12th, Fontana, guidance councilo and highly successful Southington Blue Knights baseball coach, will be one of eight coaches to be enshrined into the Connecticut High School Coaches Hall of Fame. "I must of sounded not to thrilled because at the time I was still on a high from the previous call, California, the US All-Stars the Japanese etcI" But as Carey McDonald, the executive director of the National High School Coaches Association in Ocala, Florida told me. t's a great cumplin,ent to a man that's well deserved of all the honors he receives." When I asked Mr.Mcdonald ff Connecticut had a strong representation to the High School associstton, he mentioned "It's the strongest in the country, all because ofdahn. He makes It a point to know about a lot of things." I guess his concern and involvement Is passed down to his youngsters as well because when speaking to the producer of ESPN's "Scholastic Sports America" the countries only High School nationally televised show ofit's ldnd; Dennis Derringer told me the story of his team rallying to the cause. "Whenhe had 99, 199,299 and 399 victories, his pitchers knew his next victory would be a personal milestone, so all's they did was go out and pitch a, No-Hitter, TIMEr "Then when he got selected to head up the US All-Star program we had to do something on this guyl" So it Just goes to show you that it's not onlywinning that makesJohn a leader in his field, it's the care anti understanding for all his students whether their on his teams, or not. Joining the 1983 National Coach of the Year, are his two close friends, Ed Ferrigno of Windham, the assistant Chairman of the National Coaches Convention and Gerry Rousseau, the Region One Representative to the National Committee. Included with the other six selections is Calvin Murphy, former Houston Rockets Basketball star and one of the best free throw shooters in NBAhistory. Murphy a graduate from Norwalk High School, will be inducted under the, "Outstanding Athlete" category.
